  • Marva Whitney performing her 1968 hit "Things Got To Get Better (Get Together)," with the James Brown Orchestra on Music Scene, a short lived series on ABC-TV US. Presented for historical reference. I do not own the rights.
Marva Whitney (born Marva Ann Manning, May 1, 1944 - December 22, 2012), was an American funk singer commonly referred to by her honorary title, Soul Sister #1] Whitney was considered by many funk enthusiasts to be one of the "rawest" and "brassiest" music divas.
Whitney's first chart hit came with "It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To)," a response to The Isley Brothers' hit "It's Your Thing"; her record reached number 19 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. She followed up with two smaller hits, "Things Got To Get Better (Get Together)" (R&B number 22) and "I Made A Mistake Because It's Only You Pt. 1" (R&B number 32),[6] and also recorded songs like "I'm Tired, I'm Tired, I'm Tired (Things Better Change Before Its Too Late)", and "If You Don't Work (You Can't Eat)." After recording three albums - Unwind Yourself (1968), Live and Lowdown at the Apollo [actually live in Georgia] (1969) and It's My Thing (1969) - and about 13 singles with James Brown as producer and writer or co-writer, an exhausted Whitney left the Brown stable in 1969 (or 1970) and returned to Kansas City. - wikipedia

Soul Sister #1 is one of the GREATEST VOICES EVER to touch a microphone! And unfortunately most people haven't heard of her and don't know how absolutely incredible her vocal range and power and presence were! And she's super super cute

Marva Whitney was not only beautiful, but she was way ahead of her time. With her stage presence and her signature white afro. James Brown taught her well.

      Yeah, dam!
She was in the movie The Phynx (1970). She was standing just behind James Brown on his left. She had me hypnotized when she came on screen. Like you said: She was FINE!

Ms. Whitney was an extremely talented and under-rated vocalist. James admitted in his autobiography that he was knocking her, and basically all the female singers in his revue(with the exception of Ms. Vickie Anderson) off relentlessly while they were on the road. Fringe benefit of being the boss, I'd wager.

Classic clip of Marva Whitney with JB conducting. When JB produced other artists, they basically sound like JB records with different singers on them. Ha. RIP MARVA and JB.

I think she was a much better jazz ballad singer. She had a hell of a range and singing funk does her no justice. Check out her ballads.
