    I just rinse them after each session. If the brush gets too dirty, I use the brush soap, but this usually applies to my outdoor brushes which can get really dirty as I don't have access to clean water like I'm at home.
    For brushes I use at home, I just rinse them without additional cleaning. They still perform well after a few years.

    Clean off the loose rust on your tin with a hard dish sponge. Wash and dry, then put vaseline/petroleum jelly around the inside of the tin and around the edge/lid. That will stop it rusting and sticking. Same trick works on paint tubes, just clean off the excess and pop some vaseline in the threads.

    If I find they are a bit "frizzy" or splayed, I rub them with argan oil and leave overnight then wash as usual. It seems to smooth each fur fibre without adding a silicone coat and doesn't impact absorbance etc. I know people who use all sorts of methods that work on human hair like mayonnaise masks - could be worth a try on really knackered old brushes!

    You are very careful with your brushes, but yours will last long time. Nothing wrong with that. My teacher told me, "If you take care of your brushes they will take care of you!"

      By the way, July 12th is Amazon Prime Sale Day and I plan to buy at least 1 book, maybe 2 and if they drop the price on Prima Marketing's "Classics", probably those as well. I just wanted to help you a bit by using your links if possible. I think you have one for Prima Marekting, but do you have links for either The Complete Watercolorist's Essential Notebook: A Treasury of watercolor secrets... and/on Law's Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling and/or Law's Guide to Drawing Birds?

      Hi, thanks for helping me out. You can just use any Amazon links on my blog. It does not matter if it's not linked to the specific product you want. As long as Amazon knows the link is from my website, I'll be able to get some commission.

    I rinse mine after use in a solution of acrylic flow enhancer (just a detergent), which helps loosen any pigment or dried binder. Now and again I do a more thorough wash - I use baby shampoo or other cheap, unscented shampoo in water (we are washing hair, after all - most of my brushes are Kolinksy or squirrel) - any cheap detergent will do - be that a cake of glycerine soap or a bottle of cheap shampoo. I wish them around in the solution - no rubbing, no scrubbing - and then leave the heads of the brush in the solution for 5 minutes before washing in tap water. I repeat then do a final rinse in distilled water and shape them to a point and dry them naturally. R

      I should state that acrylic flow enhancer is just a detergent used in acrylic painting, much like synthetic ox gall, just cheaper. In the field I have a mini-mister of this as it is kind of handy. I must also state I use cold water for everything - goat and squirrel can come loose if they get too warm - but I do use hot (hand hot) water for dipping shaped tips then leaving to cool (same principle as human hair - heat and shape then cool to set the shape) in the fridge for brushes like riggers that need to be very precise.

    Do you prefer Synthetic or sable? I tend to like synthetic just because it holds more water and they're generally cheaper. The connoisseur brand is made with really exacting Japanese standards and has a life time warranty. Since switching to them, I haven't needed to actually buy a brush. I've been sending them back a couple at a time when the hair gets all messed up. They replace them with brand new ones, no questions asked.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 років тому

      +Tommy Ohlrich Sable can hold more water. Synthetic is easier to use for details for me because the hair is stiff and doesn't move much.

    • @nokiot9
      @nokiot9 8 років тому

      What? Really. It seems like the synthetic holds so much more than the real hair ones... Maybe because it's softer, it just SEEMS like it does...

      not good, too much perfume etc in it, use curd soap! brush soap usually is made of curd soap and some additives.

    • @thesameritan9844
      @thesameritan9844 8 років тому

      +Il Sinistero Oh thanks for that! Although I dont think any stores have that kind of soap on stock. I guess when I travel abroad Ill have to buy some brush soap. :-)

    • @TheSpinDoctor
      @TheSpinDoctor 8 років тому +2

      You can but an unperfumed, clear glycerine soap is best - no parabens or silicones that might impact absorbance.

    • @IlSinistero
      @IlSinistero 8 років тому

      The Spin Doctor
      I'm no expert, but curd soap usually is used, because its made of natural fats (vegetabele fats and animal fats) and these fats benefit the health, especially of a natural hair brush. helps to keep the hair flexible etc. with a glycerine soap, don't you get any problems? like the hair getting strubby or too stiff?

    does over cleaning ruin them? I barely got 5 winsor series 7 brushes and I used The Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver and I fear that I may have over washed them because when they dry they "puff out" and splay. I have only washed them twice because I've only painted with them for two days. I wonder if this is normal for kolinskys or if I had received faulty brushes from Blick? if anyone has answer, please and thanks i am going CRAZY wondering if I have killed my brushes off in two days. they do turn into a point when I wet them but I have to do it constantly before dipping in paint because they splay

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому +2

      +Aimee Fritz I don't think over cleaning is that harmful. I have brushes with puffed out hair but become sharp after adding water. And those brushes still work perfectly fine for years.

      Aimee Fritz i think its normal all my sable brushes puff out when dry and go sharp when wet . It terrified me the first time 😂. I dont know maybe its to do with the humidity in the air like normal human hair goes fizzy so maybe thats why?

      @Weedus If you look on UA-cam, you can rescue Kolinsky brushes that even have acrylic nail goop dried in them! I've thoroughly gently abused my brushes, since 1985. And I still have many still working! No - they didn't get shorter for me. The outer hairs began to lose shape, causing the tips to lose snap. I've never tossed any brushes, as I used them all for WC, inking. But I did experiment during the Kolinsky Sable ban. Bought full bellied Acrylic Nail Kolinskies, because they slipped through the ban! They could do nearly everything - but not the quick change from large to chisel. Because I started out with Dr Martin WC? I've always used my old brushes (from my grade school Prang set), to OCD mix my large mixes of colors, that needed constant consistency throughout a book, instead of constantly using my Kolinskies to mix them up.

    Is that soap special? Or can I use any soap?? I don't understand the purpose of the second container of water. Can you please explain?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому +1

      The second cup is just to clean the brush more thoroughly. Usually watercolour artists would have two cups of water. One to wash the really dirty brush, and the second to wash it again so that it's really clean.

      Is is possible to use regular hand soap to clean the brush?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому

    • @marsbeads

      Art stores have specialty soaps to wash your brushes or you can use a mild soap like Ivory.

      @@hammads9045 This is Kolinsky Sable, real hair! I personally use colored shampoo and then shape it in leave-in conditioner, after wicking as much water out as possible. I have to soak it out before using again.

    This is still not the ideal way or effective way to clean your brush, the way your doing it isnt getting paint out of the ferrule, you need to go in circler motions wet the brush ths circles in the soap, and it will reshape the bristles...just saying this was taught to me by someone painting for over 30 years, give it a shot you will see, then when your done painting clean it and keep conditioner in until next use and your brushes will last longer :)
