    I had to wear the porcupine rollers! When I was 7 and again at age 9 I was a flower girl in a wedding. My hair DID NOT hold a curl. It was awful! Sleeping in those curlers for two nights just to be "cute" for two hours! Oh the horror 😯🤣🤣🤣

    I have a tip to save on hand soap in bottle dispensers. I noticed too much soap came out for each use , so I put a zip tie on the stem of the nozzle to keep it from going down so far. Now it’s just perfect amount being dispensed.

    I can't believe people are already shopping for christmas!! 😝 I really feel christmas has become over commercialised and people feel they have to spend so much time and money. My family really go for a much simpler christmas. I only buy small gifts for close family members. I think its nice to focus less on gifts and more on spending quality time with family. You can share a nice meal, watch christmas dvd together or play games etc... It doesn't have to be this huge thing that people spend $1000s on and then feel stressed and overwhelmed. I think we have forgotten that celebrations can be frugal and simpler and still enjoyable.

      We have decided to cut back a little on buying Christmas gifts for adult family members and special friends. We do something for our adult kids and their spouses and our grandchildren. We try to mail out a Christmas letter (yes, an old-fashioned letter on paper) around the time of the Christmas holiday to let everyone know we're thinking of them. Inflation and the fact that we are now both retired has led us to decide that we need to be a little more careful with our spending. We do participate in family gatherings around the holidays, where we all bring a covered dish and enjoy the food and fellowship. Time spent with our loved ones is the best gift, in our opinion. 😊

    When we were growing up, we received the Sears and Montgomery Wards Christmas catalogs. There are nine kids in our family, you would not believe the frenzy as to who got to page through those catalogs first. However, for me, I would comb through the pages carefully as we were instructed by our parents to choose just two items, circle and write our names by them. Then Santa would choose one out of the two. I stayed awake for nights wondering which one Santa would choose for me, because Santa knows best. I raised my four sons with that Christmas tradition. It warmed my heart to watch them carefully page through the catalog we received. That was in the the '80s and early '90s. I love you guys. I am so glad and blessed to have the means to watch and listen to you. Thank You!!

    My grandmother used to make curls in my hair by twisting cotton papillots in my hair. Simply twist strips of fabric into damp hair. You could sleep very well with it and the next morning you had Shirly Temple curls.

    I am watching in the UK - the prescription charges in the USA are astronomical - here a single item costs £9.65 regardless of what it is. We also have the option to buy a yearly pre-paid prescription certificate for £111.60. Prescriptions are free for old age pensioners. We also have our wonderful NHS which provides free medical services for everyone. I am very grateful for this especially as inflation and energy prices are currently so high over here. Xx

    Drinking "poor man's mocha" which begins with some mix-with-water hot chocolate mix made with coffee. We drink upto a lot of coffee, the other half likes Folgers Classic, and doesn't do well with a number of types like Starbucks. In early-ish '22 we bought what was on the shelf of 46 oz Folgers Clsssic for $6.49. Then we came across 25.x oz cans of some sort of NYC brand coffee for $4.99 and made an investment purchase for the pantry.

    Happy Belated Hope! My tip, look down when you're out walking. It's amazing what you'll find. One year I collected over $20.00 in change just by picking up loose change on the ground. Don't forget to ask about cash discounts. Some small businesses will save you the credit transaction fee if you pay cash.

    • @lisaward3890
      @lisaward3890 Рік тому

      I have found 20 dollars total US currency. Also, if a person is 65 years old ask if there is a senior discount. Some places will not offer discounts, one must ask for them! The worst answer they can give is"no"! Sometimes they will give a discount and that equates to a little cash saved instead of paying full price!

    We no longer exchange gifts either. Our retirees our budget is tight, and our condo is small, and we really do not need anything. We only buy one $25.00 gift for our 14 -year-old granddaughter to open and give her $25.00 check for her college fund. Instead of a Christmas gift for my adult son I cook a big Sunday dinner for my son and granddaughter once a month. We enjoy a great day of others companionship, a homecooked organic meal, a day of playing cards, games or visiting local sites and teaching my granddaughter to cook. Making memories!!

      I really appreciate receiving Cheques, Cash, or Gift Cards over physical presents. Sometimes more stuff is overwhelming and not what you need, it might not be as exciting but the best gift I received was a grocery store gift card… I was struggling quite a little financially and the little bit of “help” that I *had* to put to food (not bills!) was amazing. I still remember and am thankful for that present decades later.

    Hi Hope and Larry from Sydney Australia. So soon as Hope mentioned the foam hair roller,I yelled YES! I am in my late 50s so my mother was using them on me in the 60s and 70s. When I complained she would say I was lucky as when she was a little girl, she had to sleep with her hair done up in rags. Also was glad to see someone giving a shout out to the wonderful Bi carb soda.

    Our mom used to do "pin curls" the night before picture day with Bobby pins. Worst night's sleep ever for a little girl! Our mom used the porky pine rollers with the pink plastic pins. I wish I had the school photo of my niece who already had frizzy poofy hair when she did curlers the night before. It seemed to add 6" to her height.

    For Christmas presents for people with special interests and hobbies - Consider out of print and vintage books found at lower cost sources such as used/ culled book library sales, thrift stores, garage sales, and some used book stores. Some of the on-line used books are a good price.
    Many people have a fondness for vintage cookware, dishware, and the like such as old Pyrex, old copper clad Revereware, those blue and white dishes, specific Corningware etc... I have found some of this pretty darned cheap and it was MUCH appreciated; other times it was priced as collector's items and I passed most times. Another person was big into 1940's to 1960's dish towels; in like new condition or well worn with small holes, they wanted everything I dug up. The list goes on.

    I collect $1 bills. Whenever I receive change back at the store, if there are 1s, I stash them away. You can save up to $4 each trip and it’s not enough to notice or feel like it’s making or breaking my budget. Then I can use them on a predetermined goal. It’s amazing how fast they add up!

    We bought 40 chickens and raised them and then butchered them ourselves. We bought in with a friend who has a farm and help with things on the farm. We also bought two sows and a bore and have been raising our own hogs. It is a gift that keeps on giving. Now we butcher the animals ourselves it would cost more to have someone else butcher.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  Рік тому

      If you ever decide not to do the butchering yourself, I was just at a lunch yesterday with a friend who usually does a hundred chickens each year. This year she added some turkeys (she kept her laying hens and has a few meat chickens). She enjoying the change to turkeys. They take their birds to a nearby Amish community and pay them for butchering. It's fairly inexpensive.

I fill with mostly with water and add a little Dawn, then when I have only a few dishes ,I use this to clean with so I don’t waste a lot of water and soap. This also is good for spot cleaning up spilled food on clothes before adding them to the laundry.

    Great tips. Yes, I am done with Christmas shopping. On payday, I always put a certain amount into savings. However, if I have spent less during the month than what I budgeted for, the extra goes into savings. I also save my change in a gallon size pickle jar. I only cash it in when it becomes full. It goes into savings. I have two savings accounts. One is for Christmas and birthdays, and the other is for emergencies. My mother-in-law (83) still uses the pink sponge curlers every night. Here in the Texas Panhandle (Canyon, TX) 9/1/2023 it was in the 60s overnight but the high was in the 100s. We still have above high temps.

One person picks the name out and that charity gets the money. It has to be a 501(c)3 registered charity and for us nothing political.

I've also brought some loose leaf Earl Gray. & use a little sweet original creamer. No sugar added. I will have to check out your coffee choices! Arabic coffees are SUPER strong, though! Other favorites: Red rooibos & Matchas.

    I do CVS and Rite Aid.... I watch Jodi Dunn, Shop with Sarah, and a few others.... I learned how to coupon big time, not like I use to with just buying something w/ a coupon.... I have a stock pile without spending a ton of money

    Happy belated Birthday, Hope. Love these viewer tips. Yes, if you live in America, please call the drug manufacturer and ask for help. I have up to $15,000 annually from my drug maker towards my copays for cancer treatment. It never hurts to make some calls and ask. The American Cancer Society can also help. If your doctor or cancer center has a patient navigator, they can help too. Yes, I remember those pink foam rollers that pulled your hair when your mom took them out in the morning.

    Husband tends to overspend a little when he is working off island… I find sending him in with smaller bills slows the spending down, and I get more change back that I can save more easily. The rolled coinage can get cashed in and it’s like free money.

    My mom also got some help covering her medications from the pharmaceutical companies about 10 years ago.... we are in Colorado. My best advice is to DIY if it is possible. We just changed out my fuel pump before it died for the cost of a pump. We got a 300 dollar pump for 75 on Ebay. the dealership would have charge 1000. It was not the most exciting way to spend a Saturday afternoon but my car is running great.

    Happy Belated Birthday, Hope! 🎊🎈🎉. I’m assuming that means you have an August birthday. Joel and I are both August babies too. 🙌
