Bb straight soprano has seriously been overlooked as a classical instrument. I’ve heard Bach oboe concertos done by soprano and results are fascinating!
Late to the party on this recording, but I love this recording, it's one of my leading influences on how I prepare this piece for my own school's concerto competition. Thanks so much for sharing and I hope you are still playing!!
WTF??? This was a wonderful performance placed on UA-cam for us all to watch for free! Just glancing, several comments are like something a judge would write as feedback at competition. I see the purpose there, regardless of the comments themselves. I didn't realize we were supposed to be grading the performance. I don't think a judge would be posting these comments publicly on UA-cam, though. Saxophone is supposed to be the most personalized instrument, which is often lost on classical saxophonists. This is her interpretation, her sound, her willingness to provide this for whoever chooses to listen, so frankly what difference does it make if she plays superbly or terribly? You are not being forced to listen or watch. Are you missing your calling as a judge? Why don't some of you link to a video of your own playing? We can all have stylistic differences & can personally decide to do something else in our own interpretation, our own sound, but why criticize publicly on UA-cam? We only benefit by hearing various voices present this work or any other. I have this on my future pieces to learn list, so thank you for posting your excellent rendition. I look forward listening to some of your other performances.
I feel like the reasons people are giving her hate is purely sexist. She’s 10x better than all of the other recordings and her playing really helped me learn the solo. You guys need to get lives she’s amazing!
You don't know why they "disliked" the video so you accuse people of something of which you have no proof. Could it be the interpretation? The composition itself? The sound quality of the recording? Her mannerisms? The conductors high shoulder mirror conducting technique? She is certainly an amazing talent but to assume that any criticism has to be sexist is silly.
This piece gave me goosebumps...just incredible work. I always admire a female saxophonist that can kick butt. I cannot wait to play this piece and it is just amazing. Great job. Female sax players are a lot better then guys might think and you've definitely proved that. Right on!
Heard you on alto at Eastman last night and was blown away. So I came to youTube to hear more. Villa-Lobos is a longtime fav. I wanted to address an old comment here about your leaving the applause on the end of the performance. This is live, and the ovation and bows are part of the performance. And they're a visual part the night, a "you are there" touch not to be edited away. But that's just me. I guess a slow fade out would've been acceptable; but if getting to the next vid in a hurry is an issue for someone, they have only to click to the next. Another way of looking at it... CDs have several seconds between tracks. We are intense listeners, deep in a trance through sometimes lengthy pieces. A "breather" between the night's performances is nice--we contemplate and digest what we've just heard, and let the enjoyment linger while relaxing and anticipating the next piece.
You're one of these people who listens to music but doesn't really HEAR it. You show yourself to be among the dumbed down, clueless ignoramuses. I don't see a hint of poetry in what I wrote. Just praise and support for this artist. But it's nice to know my prose has a poetic lilt to it. Too bad you feel insecure and threatened by someone with only a satisfactory command of the language. Are you sure you ain't "smelling" your own filthy ass? TAKE A BATH!
Yep, just as I thought. Total classless POS. Well, you're right about one thing, nobody cares. I got more response from you than the artist I meant to support. LOL! Now...go learn English, POS!
I played this piece in 10th grade. I could probably play it better now if I practiced but the way she plays with technique in the third movement is pretty amazing. She's the first pro I've heard playing it with all the tonguing that is written in it. Awesome great work.
I played this for solo and ensemble in my sophomore year and was not ready for it by then. I didn't play the third movement though. If I did I would've been like a prodigy high schooler. The third movement is beautiful though. The tonguing is insane.
I rented the parts from the music library at U of M (where I went to school). You could try a similar resource, or I'm sure there is a way for you to rent the parts from U of M or any other school music library.
can i PLEASE find this on apple music? i have been trying to find a performance this good on apple music and have been unsuccessful. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME FIND A PERFORMANCE LIKE THIS THAT IS HIGHER QUALITY AUDIO!
Hello, Thank you very much for this beautiful music ! Best wishes ! NB : What hapening on your channel ? Two last videos can't be of you. Someone has broken your code. Best wishes ! Jean-Charles Bourquin
Wow, Great sound and projection! I live in and Ann Arbor but I have never heard about this concerto competition; is it an annual concert at Hill? Also what is your setup this video (sax, lig, mpc, reed)? Keep up the great work, I hope one day I will sound as good on the soprano as you!
Sounds great, I am currently playing this piece, but I cannot seem to find the orchestral parts. I only find the piano reduction. Could someone lead me in the right direction?
She sway and she can play, it's kind of funny though, it feels like she's trying to get out of time with the orchestra. (Of course, the conductor won't let that happen)
I disagree there. I know which section you're talking about. I've gone through piece with Joe Allard and he suggested that tenuto should be used and more "rhythmical freedom" should be taken with those arpeggios.
Nicely done. The beginning was rushed by the soloist a little. Probably nervousness. A little too much body movement for my taste. Very good intonation. (Middle c is often a problem. Here it was almost perfect). For some of those "scary" notes she could have covered some keys on the right hand to improve intonation.
Too fast, perhaps the Amazon rainforest , the song of the birds that live there is not in line with the speed presented here, the passion has not found a place in the rapid arpeggios that do not deliver the real feeling of the relationship of the native Brazilian man with the nature of his country.
excellent playing, but why leave in the one minute of applause at the end of the performance? to anyone not tone deaf, it's obvious that the soloist did an outstanding job of finely expressing all the nuance of the late Maestro Villa Lobos. the small orchestra performed extraordinarily well, and the conductor is clearly sympathetic to the music of the composer. so, why leave in the applause? for some of us who make playlists of composers' works, the clapping destroys the mood for the next video.
the middle section, with the fast 7th chord patterns are played way too slow, and there is no tenuto over the first note in those patterns. You can make it longer and drag it out, but it needs to be in tempo. Other than that, very nice. intonation was pretty good. tone is nice, and the phrasing was pretty good for the most part. I'd give it an A- but keep on playing and posting!
You’re right and that there’s no to noodle over those notes, but there’s obviously a clear descending line. What she’s doing is she’s taking her musical expertise to highlight those notes for the listener.
I don't know.... I kind of felt it wasn't together with the orchestra at times and it was like she tried too hard to play musically and forced the issue. I felt like I was on a boat ride. The movement was just silly considering there were tons of blips and missed notes. :/
Didn't always hear all of the notes on runs. Phrasing needs improvement. Hardly hear any vibrato. Pleasing tone but needs more breath support. Good musicianship. Tempos not always correct. Good technique is her strong suit. Surprised she won at such a fine School of Music! Maybe she and the female conductor were featured due to feminism.
Any credible critique you could offer, Mr. Peterson, was rendered moot by the nonsense of your last statement. Others can only suspect that you're intimated by these two fine musicians who-regardless of gender, and in spite of individuals who think like yourself-have received accolade upon accolade, including professorships and major fellowships with orchestras around the world-while still in their twenties. Keep you sexism away from classical music, please; there are those of us working too hard to make it an equitable and welcoming place. And when you critique performances, try not to write as if you're judging a middle-school solo and ensemble competition.
Well, you're not wrong, she clearly needed way more work. But was your last sentence really necessary? Gender matters not when it comes to judging a performance.
Bb straight soprano has seriously been overlooked as a classical instrument. I’ve heard Bach oboe concertos done by soprano and results are fascinating!
Thank God Villa Lobos lives!

Decidi só falar na língua do maestro! Posso, contudo falar em francês , alemão ou italiano se a senhora preferir. Preciso falar com a senhora!
Como brasileiro, fiquei encantado!

You are amazing! What were the tempi for 1 and 3? That was very impressive playing. Thank you for such a great resource!
@eguchi351 In my band, it's a joke to poke fun at the other instruments. I'm not musically ignorant, thank you. It sounds great, so calm down.
Jé vous amme madamnr!! Alle alle. Marc Aysak.
Best!!!

not to flex or anything but that’s my private instructor
Brava Katherine!
What is the brand of the sax?
Very nice performance. What is the saxophone and mouthpiece you are using?
I disagree there. I know which section you're talking about. I've gone through piece with Joe Allard and he suggested that tenuto should be used and more "rhythmical freedom" should be taken with those arpeggios.
@FashionbabyP and by movement, I mean that constant swaying! Musicians should move... but not to the point that it gets ridiculous!
この方w凄いテクニックっすねwww
;)

Dr. Weintraub, did a fantastic job!!

I hope this comment is meant to be some sort of poor, tasteless humor. Because it is not just inaccurate, but actually quite rude.
