Buster Keaton is blushing up in the clouds. Keanu is truly an incredible actor. Sometimes it’s about more than delivering a line. Just like Tom cruise, the man delivers a fully integrated performance. The movie is beautiful, the stunts jaw dropping, all the performances are top notch. The Hotline Miami sequence is the best shootout I’ve ever seen.

The thing I love of about this movie is that it doesn't try to market itself or what its doing as what it isn't. They know exactly what John wick as a franchise is and they deliver exactly what they set out to in spectacular fashion. It's got its fair share of faults for sure, but it has the essentials down to a science and while the faults are there, no one is really trying to argue against them , its just that it gets the right stuff more than than right enough to where overlooking the flaws is hardly an ask for most.

I’ve heard a few reviewers complain that Skarsgard’s Marquis was underwhelming in terms of being the antagonist and posing an actual threat. But I think that Skarsgard did a great job in the role by doing exactly what the character of the Marquis was written to be: being such an unlikeable dick that my theatre straight up burst into applause upon his death.

    • @Jake-dh9qk
      @Jake-dh9qk Рік тому +55

I like how the Marquis is really just some random servant in the High Table organization instead of someone who's menacing. It makes the High Table seem even more scarier because the power that the Marquis holds is literally given to him by orders of the High Table, yet we never see the actual organization. We only see a mid-level servant wielding power given to him and all the firepower he can pull against John Wick. It really proves how the Marquis isn't even important, he's just some guy that can be replaced by another person. The true power comes from the High Table and they are untouchable, even to the Baba Yaga. In all of the 4 movies combined, John Wick has only killed around 300 men. These are probably just a fraction of a percent all the men at the disposal of the entire High Table.

@@Jake-dh9qk yeah fully, it’s to the point where the only way for our protagonist to win is to escape from the table or to help Break the rules of the table and get away with this. One thing I really appreciate in the John Wick franchise is the sincerity of these movies no matter how absurd or silly things get. There’s stuff that happens in these movies that, in a Marvel movie, would have characters winking at the audience about how silly and absurd it all is. There would be quips. There would be references. There would be meta, ironic bullshit. Those movies would be dying to let you know about how self aware they are about their premise. Movies that make fun of their own premise are cowardly. It’s not real cinema. Real cinema approaches its premise sincerely and roots itself in it no matter how over the top the premise is.
These John Wick movies are obviously aware of how goofy some of its elements are, yet they lean into them anyway like great blockbuster films once used to. Look at Top Gun Maverick. Look at Nolan’s blockbusters. Look at Raimi’s Spider-Man movies. Look at Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Titanic, etc all iconic movies that have still remained in the zeitgeist despite being before the 2000s.
What is one trait these iconic films all share? They’re incredibly sincere and earnest. They have weight. They have gravitas. They’re not afraid of being criticized. Also, it’s not like those movies are lacking in comedy. It’s just not the kind of comedy which is just cynicism masquerading as self awareness masquerading as wit. That’s the kinda shit you get from modern blockbusters.
The John Wick franchise is not like other modern blockbusters.

I don’t think John Wick is a ‘masculine’ series, it’s just a franchise… I get what you’re saying but the best movies aren’t masculine or feminine they’re just movies. There are plenty of great feminine and masculine characters respectively but there’s also others like the adjudicator in chapter 3 that don’t fit any one characterisation. The great thing about this franchise is it tells a story without any weird agendas which is what I agree with you on. I don’t understand the hyperfixation on it being overtly masculine. Masculinity and femininity are two sides of the same coin, they’re not all that different contrary to what the modern social divide would indicate. If people would stop highlighting them as two opposing forces or classifying one thing as solely masculine or solely feminine then I think things would be a lot better. Like yes John wick as a character is pretty damn macho but that’s not the focus of anything it’s just the way he’s written and acted that came naturally to everyone involved. That’s the important thing, don’t force anything just let it come naturally.

Avatar 1 was the most heartfelt, emotive movie of all time. Avatar 2, I had to shut it off part way through because it was constant fire and explosions, and stress. They ruined the whole point of the movie, which was awe and wonder.

When the 1st John Wick film came out, I remember telling my physical trainer that Keanu has another big franchise coming that's going to be as big as the Matrix and that he'll be known for this character as much as he is known for Neo. My trainer didn't believe me during that time ...and look at how things turned out now.
Don't you just love it when you feel justified? 😏

The only thing disappointing about John Wick 4 was how the movie missed an opportunity to give a great villain ending to Bill Skarsgard's character.
His character deserved to be finished in a better way because throughout the whole movie his character was calculating and understood every situation around him (leaving when Winston lured him into the duel) but he died at the end of the movie for becoming overconfident, like WTH he was so calculating but at the end of the movie he becomes a stubborn child and gets killed off like his character meant shit.
JK4 was great but the execution of the main villain was the greatest flaw of it.

Only movie where even though I can understand the criticism it receives , I’m willing to forgive all of because it is a such a clean , beautiful film when it comes to action cinema .. which doesn’t use cgi or any propaganda pushing or any over hyping …: it is just John Wick . And that’s all it ever tried to be .

What an awesome review I could here the joy and passion in your voice, although I haven't seen it yet (reasons!) I know I am gonna love it too. My stand out for your review was when you described that feeling you get when you walk out of the flicks and the oh so welcome cool air hits, It's in that moment your fist clenches your adrenalin is still coursing and you pump the air and exclaim " YEESSS that was fucking insane ! " We don't get enough movies at the moment that can do that. The last time I personally experienced this was after leaving ' Aliens ' that was a Monday evening and I repeated the experience on the Tuesday and Wednesday of that same week ! Great work !.........cheers and Squeak !

We still will purchase our digital copy to complete our wick set but Donnie yen was the reason I needed to go to the movies again.

I dont know where you are getting your statistics from, but i am so happy to hear JW4 is beating Avatar in terms of box office. It's exactly as you say, sell it as a visual and technical spectacle as much as you want, dont pretend you're a serious narrative film, makes me want to vomit. JW is tongue in cheek and knows what it is, gets the basic right, and we love what we get.

Not that I ever saw John Wick as anything more than an exemplar of action cinema and never took the story seriously, though I always thought it was just good at oozing coolness, it is really funny to think of how the entire story that filled 4 movies, filled with all the death destruction and crazy events all happened because some douche stole a car and killed a puppy. Lol
The only thing that made me roll my eyes and go "oh come on!" was Wicks fall from the building and survivinng in part 3.

I enjoyed the new Avatar movie and the Matrix sequels (the original sequels got more hate than they should, that Resurrections movie was pretty garbage) so I can't really agree with you about those, but what I appreciated about the Wick franchise was that I feel the series got better with each iteration with this last film probably being my favorite of the four. That is pretty impressive as that doesn't seem "normal" with franchises. I'm actually hoping the coming Avatar movies do the same as well.

The Tracker and The Harbinger were appropriately nameless reflections of Wick--the Tracker was what a younger, rising Wick-like person would've been--business only, but with integrity--and the Harbinger is a grim warning of what a fate worse than death for someone like Wick could look like, unable to escape his life of servitude, as shown by his missing finger. So we got past, present and potential future Wick.

I think focus on manly is a little strange but this is an incredible movie. John wick is incredibly sentimental, and as long as your not in his way incredibly kind and respectful. The violence is pure survival and revenge but it heightens all of the desire he has to remember his wife and ultimately cement his name as someone not to be fucked with.
Predator is a literal satire on the macho man movies of the 80s so I'm not sure if put either in the the category your puting it in. Though I love Predator too.
This movie was a wonderful dance of drama and action and it's not the fake woke shit corps push cause this is a movie made by people who give a shit, it's a reflection of everyday people and not this hyper focus on this whole anti lefty shit that's not even a reflection of their actual values.
And incredible movie and I will watch this several times.

I totally agree with your review mc. I'm off to see it again this weekend, it's a film that must be seen on the big screen. I think the underrated stars of this franchise are the colour graders. Along with the cinamatographers they managed to make this franchise look like a graphic novel. Something that really ticked a box for me.

There’s one key thing that makes the John Wick movies stand out: exceptional fight choreography and editing. I lost interest in action movies for a long time because of the tropes that arguably began with the Jason Bourne franchise - quick cuts, too many close ups and ESPECIALLY the ridiculous amount of shakey cam. The John Wick movies felt like a breath of fresh air in comparison and look absolutely beautiful in their composition. The closest thing before that would probably be The Raid movies. If spin offs (leave the main franchise alone, it’s done) have the same style they’re all gonna be bangers.
