It’s true. I’ve heard that saying from many Norwegians.
@@VanGoWanderlust and why's that? could you explain? :)
Maddu Campbell the tradition dates back to the 1930’s when Norway was a poor country and the standardized lunch was part of a government program to provide a minimal amount of nutrition to everyone. Although the govt program is no longer in place, the tradition continues and I t has become a symbol of frugality and egality. I think a fancy lunch would be seen as overly luxurious and wasteful.
I am Norwegian and can confirm that it is actually true
I came to the states as 9 year old kid in 1978. The first time I broke out my matpakke the kids didn't know what to think. It was leverposte and Mills kaviar (thanks to the Norwegian Seamans Church store nearby). So many questions about what I was eating and who wrapped it. Even more question about the bread, mom's home made dark wheat. No one would even try it. They said it was gross. I did get some kids to try the getøst and they liked it. I love this video. It's so true and brought back so many memories.
Love your story! Thanks a lot for sharing 👌😃

For a young guy this dude is super old school. I never heard of this food, and I lived in Norway 6 months 30 years ago! Plenty of people have real food for lunch and breakfast in Norway. My favorite place was a tiny coffee shop about two blocks from the Bristol hotel in Oslo. They have the best baggette shrimp sandwiches. OMG. Shrimp sandwiches are everywhere there like we have burgers or hot dogs. Even 7/11 has shrimp baggette sandwiches. The taste of seafood there is the best I ever had. Shrimp had a real taste and firm texture, I've never had close since.

"You are not supposed to look forward to your lunch in Norway" I'm DYING
My father was from French Canada. He took two sandwiches, wrapped in waxed paper, to work every day. He would bring the 2 pieces of waxed paper home in his lunch pail every day and reuse them for 4 more days. If he were living, he would turn 100 this year (2019.)
Omg, that's a true Norwegian hero 😂

My Dad too! he got more use out of one piece of waxed paper, one paper bag and the same rubber band to hold it all together. this is the worst video ever
There was a time when people knew the value of resources. All gone now.
My mother was definitely not Norwegian but somehow she managed to send me to school with a Matpakke every day. It didn’t stop there. She was such a bad cook that our breakfasts and suppers were the equivalent to Matpakke. I began cooking for myself when I was 12...out of self defense. Anyone looking at our family photos have wondered out loud why we were soooo thin. Matpakke!!!! Thanks Ronald and Mads for the explanation!!

So glad I found this! I am half Norwegian and was trying to explain matpakke to my Italian husband and he didn’t believe me. Even less so when I told him that Norway doesn’t have free school lunches and this is what the children take to school… And most adults to work! For context he is a chef at a school in Finland
Haha, his reaction is understandable! Our lack of proper school lunch for our pupils is a disgrace. We have the mony but we don't have a real food culture.. Thanks for sharing and engaging with us. Say ciao to your boyfriend :):)

Yep, food is not our thing, but hot beverages are
Tea, coffee, bone broth, cocoa
As an American Southerner, I wouldn't know what to do with this, as our kitchens are the hub of the home. I can feed you cardboard and broth if you want, but my mom will be upset with me if you're skinny or look hungry. It's in our culture to bring food for the bereaved or just folks going through a hard time, as a show of love. Our signature food would be casserole, and meat and threes.

My father is from Stavanger, Norway, and he and I would make this to the closest he could get here in the USA....Right down to the the dry bread and wax paper. We would use very little butter, liverwurst, Gjetost (the wonderful brown-imported goat cheese) thinly layered. I LOVED IT!!!!! Making some today!
Are produce (veggies/fruit) just eaten for breakfast and dinner? Just curious.
That face at the end. He was starting to regret his existence.
So basically it’s stale whole wheat bread with margarine, potted meat and a slice of government cheese.

No fatties because the whole society has a social agreement to eat tasteless dry food? Yeah I guess no one overeats if its not worth it. Interesting solution!

It is not a sandwich; it is a matpakke.
It is so funny. But on a serious note, it makes you appreciate the food. Most of my English friends are surprised to see us Indians bring packed lunch everyday. They make fun of us saying "Oh come on, packed lunch today as well? We can go out to eat or at least grab a sandwich, why do you spend most of your time in kitchen?" etc. But we Indians like home made food, but we have so many variations though for our packed lunch. It saves money, it reduces the food waste, it makes you humble, it makes you appreciate and excite when you actually go out to eat. I am gobsmacked how people in some developed countries always spend money in the shops for lunch. Particularly in US, so much food waste. People should learn from people like you, to pack lunch and be grateful for it.
But Indian food is good.
Bring my lunch everyday as well. Eating out is expensive and usually not healthy. Prefer to chill at my desk vs running out. Also don’t eat any meat or dairy so there’s that.
Personally, I dont know why people should eat any other kind of food besides Indian food 🤣🤣
@@spicybrown75 There are lovely cuisines around the world apart from Indian food though.
I pack my lunch because it is healthy and saves me money. I live in a country where people are cheap and it is tradition to pack your lunch. Most co workers bring lunch from home. That makes it less akward.
I love the Norwegian way, practical, simple, earthy and weird. I love how frank they are about who they are. For such reticence they are very forthcoming.
Thank you for a beautiful compliment and quite precise description of who we are and our culture. Pragmatics is a strong rule of law here.
Hemi * Yes, and not only Norwegians but Americans of Norwegian descent, Brett Rodgers comes to mind, that guy is downright IRIE! :)
YOURWAY2NORWAY
What do Norwegians think of poetry, art and fantasy literature (like Lord of the Rings)?
I hope Norway isn’t too pragmatic. It would be boring that way.
@@zain4019 Don't read too much into the pragmatic part. We do have feelings, hopes and dreams even though we don't have the passion of Southern Europeans. I can't speak for everyone, but since we have the mountains, forests and fjords, I think there is a deep romantic side to people here, bit different from other kind of romanticism. More about the self and the nature than Romeo and Juliet, perhaps. Nature has inspired composers, writers, poets and playwrights. As a child, my nan read Norwegian fairytales to me, so I got used to fantastic stories. I think Norwegian kids and teenagers read about the same literature as other Europen kids. Unfortunately, a lot of kids don't read at all anymore.
Needless to say, like everywhere else, love and beauty is important, but the weather doesn't allow us to be chic all the time, which has surely influenced the fashion. People are human despite the culture, so of course art is essential for Norwegians.
@@zain4019 Actually, Norway tops the world for searches of Lord of the Rings: trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F07bz5
- it is generally very Romantic, capital R, in the tradition of German/Eastern European/Scandinavian Romanticism.

Up north, we are very "efficient". I mean, we need less food to create energy. If we eat as much as you we get very fat. :-)

It's supposed to be a disappointment. Words to live by.
Is deliberate suffering part of the Norwegian experience?
Ja
Yes!
mmm... a matpakke, some water and a side serving of antidepressants!
& it’s expensive. Expensive suffering.
the law of Jante
I've had matpakke on my mind daily for 3 weeks now. So I decided to have it today. ;)
Instead of making them at home and separating them by waxed paper,
I brought two half-toasted white bread slices together and some liver pate in its original container.
Only at work that I spread the pate on the toast.
I may have contravened many long-held rules:
1) I didn't have the waxed paper
2) I didn't use whole wheat bread
3) I kept the liver pate in a refrigerator at work, which I understand Norwegians wouldn't have access to
4) I looked forward to lunch.
As you may already know, that's not matpakke.
the word you were looking for in english is Spread! butter, pathe or mayonaisse are considered spreads.
Correct! But Pålegg covers even more than Spread does. Pålegg is EVERYTHING you put on bread. Meat, cheese, veggies, spreads, etc. :) So I'd say the closest word would be topping. Because we don't have sandwiches, only bread slices with toppings
BUTTERRR
You guys are too much! I'm loving the Norwegian sense of humor, who knew!?
About the Matpakke...my mom, who was born FOB (that's 'fresh off the boat') in the US to Lithuanian parents, pretty much made the same 'lunch packets' for me all through my childhood, right down to the waxed paper packaging, lol. Just a wee bit of butter on the bread, a slice or two of cheese or meat, and that's it. But it did come with a piece of fruit or maybe some sort of entertaining vegetable - radishes, carrots, something crunchy, on the side, and a thermos of milk.
And that thermos is a whole 'nother story...if it happened to fall, the first thing you did was cautiously pick it up, and with a prayer to on high and a heightened sense of dread, shake it. If it rattled, you knew you weren't getting milk with lunch, and you were going to catch holy hell when you got home for breaking yet ANOTHER expensive thermos bottle.
Lithuania is i many ways a typical nordic country. Matpakke is in denmark too. Awesome story and link to our content. Thanks for sharing. 🍻 from Ronald and Mads in the team

I was married to a Finn, so I learned to make Finnish sourdough "black bread." My husband wanted only a slice or two of that bread with a little butter and very little sliced sausage or cheese, and sometimes sardines, etc. to be eaten open faced, as we call it. He often complained that I put too much on it. I think the star of the meal was the bread. He preferred to wrap it in paper, so I bought 'waxed paper' for him. I wanted to make a nice 'American' sandwich with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, etc... as you said but, he wouldn't eat it. He didn't even call it 'lunch.' He called it 'coffee.' He didn't like attention made toward food, either... You had coffee and something with it (the 'sandwiches.' I've never heard this from anyone else till you. Maybe this is why we have more obesity and you/they don't, or didn't, till our Western food culture got adopted over there more. If I put the 'sandwiches' into a bag with an apple, he'd roll up the bag and carry it under his arm. He would have been happy with the sandwiches rolled in newspaper. True. I'm going to try to adopt a little more of the "you're not supposed to look forward to your lunch," attitude. I could lose some weight. lol

"If it's not sweaty, it's not lunch -- it's not Matpakke!"
The reason this matpakke is such a big think in Norway is that the school system does not have any lunch included at school. All through the first ten years of schooling the students eat their matpakke in the classroom, then in high school there will be a cantina with some baguettes and one hot dish if you're lucky - for outrageous prices of course. This is basically the only reasonable lunch.
Love your reflections. Agree with you. Thanks for sharing
Same in germany, though we eat pretty much the exact same thing (but put in a "bentobox" (Brotdose) to not produce so much waste), for our second breakfast at 11 (as school starts at 8 and usually ends at 13 o'clock) and not for lunch, as that is our warm meal of the day and most adults also continue this out of habit.
Same in the Netherlands
This sandwich makes me more depressed than the fact that you dont even get sunshine for half of the day
That’s the equator. These guys get long days balanced by very short days
Lucia... right!!!
clod8 it’s just a hyperbolic and presumptious joke
I'm norse. So what do other people eat for lunch? In Norway it's impossible to get fast-food or anything like that unless u live in the city.
@@Dariuz001 when I am at work I take a pack lunch of sandwiches, a fruit, a chocolate bar of some sort and a drink.
As an American trying to learn Norwegian language/culture/cuisine, this video is absolutely critical educational material. Subscribed for further insights
No wonder Black Metal was born in Norway.
🍻🍻
I got so far in wondering if he was going to eat the paper
No. The paper is just there to keep the toppings on one slice of bread from getting on the bottom of the other slice of bread so it doesn't get messy and the flavors don't blend with each other. You would remove the paper before eating.
The paper would be the best part.
I would die from hunger if I had to live in Norway, but thanks for sharing. I’m enjoying your channel and you’re quite animated😊
Omg you are hilarious, keep posting please!! 😂❤️
I come back to this video at least once a week, idk why it's so comforting to me, maybe because it's similar to asmr
This is so funny!
My American born Norwegian aunt met her American service man husband in Norway. Their first date was horrible according to both. He then happened to mention the american cheese that was avalible to him on the military base. Well she immediately fell in 'love' lol. He got her American food, and she taught him Norwegian (ended up reaching him improper Norwegian with lots of slang, and he failed his test lol) They went on to have 5 children. My aunt missed American food so bad lol!..
Haha, love your story 😍 Thanks a lot for sharing!
@@YOURWAY2NORWAY Thank you! Thank you! Love the chanel!!!
I must finish my annual report for my job but instead, I am watching a random Norwegian guy trying to convice me that 2 slices of bread and cheese are not a sandwich. If someone criticizes my report, I will probably end up saying that there are different ways to conceive reality. Like in Norway, where sliced bread and cheese do no constitute a sandwich. Lovely accent. Now I have to grab a snack.
We are so sorry :) Thanks for an amazingly nice story and comment Eleonora Schor - good luck!!
@@YOURWAY2NORWAY But I guess you guys never snack, in Norway, right? (Except while making matpakke!)
I love this video and have subscribed. I'm a Londoner and have been to Norway but my Norwegian friends in London as well as over there never mentioned the matpakke so this is new to me. And no, this isn't a strange tradition. We take packed lunch to work when we can, a lot of people even deliberately cook a bigger portion for dinner so they can take the leftovers to work the next day. More videos like this please. In the mean time I'm going to show my Norwegian friends this. Also, I would say pålegg roughly means topping/filling in English.
I’m from New York and I love this video. Thank you
Cool to hear. Thanks :)
I watched all of that....and didnt realise you were mocking the lunch until at least the 4 minute mark LOL
Sadly, it took me longer. I think he was in the hoodie towards the end...I"m in tears.
Lol about 6 mins
What? Did I miss something?
I knew I was being trolled!!🤣🤣. Good idea in our food obsessed culture: Don’t look forward to your lunch!
LoL
OK - I spewed coffee all over the table. i know i should not watch Ronald with a beverage, but its early and I forgot. lol. So, no condiments, no lettuce, no tomato. No chips, no fruit, no juice box. So absolutely Norwegian!
Ha ha ha ha 🤣. Best comment ever!
Dude even ur lunch is beige! The Italian part of me is weeping. Great video as always!!!!!
🤣👌🤣
When he rolled up the cheese and stuffed it into his mouth I fuckin died
Hilarious and appalling at the same time. Beige bread, beige butter, beige cheese, beige pate--I imagine a slice of red tomato would be a shock to the system, and maybe mark you as a sociopath?
Hahaha, and we have beige apartements too. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/2l8otxpCwJs/v-deo.html
The red tomato would become soggy and make the cheese really sweaty. Which is good. But still a no from me.
@@marit9089 That's why you need 2 or 3 cm of sliced roast beef--to soak up that juice.
@@americanmade6996 You're in the wrong on this one. Trust me.
Hey, I’m a beige person! I should move to Norway!
A lot of Norwegians settled in Oregon, where I live, in the late 1800's. I can see their attitudes towards food still hasn't changed. Food here in Oregon is typically very dull.
Omg, that's so interesting and awesome to hear. A time capsule in the US. I am so happy you shared and informed us 🤗🤗
Food in Portland is exquisite
@@mitchellglaser Yes it is, nowadays. It has gotten better only in the last ten to fifteen years only because of people moving in, and the Food TV Network. If you grew up there in the 50's, 60's and 70's you would remember how dull it was.
I am an Oregonian descended from those very Oregon Norwegians. My grandfather and great grandfather, both from Norway- the island of Senja, are buried in Portland, Oregon. We never ate anything like this, and definitely, our pallet is, and never was this horrifyingly dull. Lots of onion, well seasoned fried fish, lots of roasts, meatballs, fried chicken, loads of Tabasco sauce on piles of fried eggs, sausage and bacon, lots of fruits and vegetables, all kinds of jams and jellies, hot canned chutneys, spiced pickles, hot peppers, sharp local cheeses, brown Mustard... the kind of food in this video must be a recent phenomenon in Norway.
@@maryvalentine9090 Err, just because your relatives from many years ago didn't eat like this doesn't mean you can define a food tradition as "being a recent phenomenon". Especially when your relatives settled down and became Americans. :P Norway was a very poor country up until the 70s, there's a lot of stuff that hangs around still because of that.
Got my Matpakke sweatshirt, LOVE IT!!!
Awesome to hear. Thanks a lot 😻😻
Please post us a pick on our Facebook page if you want. ❤️
@@YOURWAY2NORWAY Will do!
I cannot emphasise enough how much I love this video. I am coming back year after year to refresh my memories. It's funny and it has a laid back vibe if I was back at home. So thank you!! (Also, the supermarket video too - seems like food a very bonding topic.)
Awesome to hear! Thanks and cheers :):)
Same here! Have you watched the summer mayo and shrimp one? Same vibes. 😂
@@75kym haha of course
It’s the wax paper . So appetizing
I love this guy. Every nation has its quirks. Go Norway!
"It's supposed to be a disappointment when you open it..." NAILED IT! 🤣
You guys are the best. So fun, funny and great to watch.
Thanks!! Just had a look at your channel and subscribed. Love your all year around Santa Claus style :)
@@YOURWAY2NORWAY Thanks Ronald! Today I am shooting a video for making Triple Sec... Orange Liqueur. Ho Ho Ho.
When I was a kid I was told that Europeans don't have humor through sarcasm. I've gone through probably 4 videos until I realized this channel isn't an angry guy. Lol. Good stuff!
Haha, very funny comment! Cool that you understood and that you are engaging and sharing with us Bee. Cheers from Roanld and Mads :):)
Omg! That explains everything! My grandparents were from Sweden and Norway. Gives me better insight of why as children, we shouldn't enjoy certain things in life...
😂😂 that's Norway. Thanks for sharing your story and link to our content
I can't say I was super excited about Norwegian culture but as I watch your videos more and more (it is shown in my recommendations) I really get very interested in it 😂 I find it cool that you are not too protective about your country and take things with humor and a bit of irony. That's the best!
Your comment warms our ❤ thank you so much
one of the funniest clips i've seen for a long time..... I'm from UK and now living in Norway, and my work colleagues always like to look of my 'real' sandwich when they look at what they have :)
Watching this one again. This is my favorite video of yours ❤ hope Mads is feeling better
My wife is Norwegian and Swedish. Now I know why it took so many years to get her to even try onion, garlic, Italian food or anything spicy or without a kind of white sauce in her food.
Whoa! Crazy ingredients!
That's 100% the Norwegian side. Swedes love to experiment with food, which is how we invented surströmming.
@@HB45175 that's not food! That's a biohazard!
Everyone in Norway must be so thin. I need to move there for a year to get this food obsession of mine under control. So, you use food to just stop hunger pains. Ha! Brilliant.
im norwegian and this is my diet... i lose 1 kilo per day
I'm moving there. Norwegian diet looks like it works.
It's a trick. It only keeps you thin while you're living with your parents. The moment you grow up and move out and can finally decide on your own what to eat, it's all candy and snacks and you gain like 30kg in a week xD
Hard to believe these people were Vikings! Great video, Ronald. I laughed all the way through. Subscribed!
Awesome to hear Rick Wyk, thanks a lot! 🍻🍻 from Ronald and Mads in the team
My god, am I glad my family's culture is all about eating and sharing food. I can't imagine life without flavourful food.
I love how you present this. You are so funny yet informative.
UA-cam recommendations at it again, but definitely glad I clicked.
Very interesting
So funny. And yet, I would totally eat these sammies. The paper adds ruffage .
Lmao😂🤣😅"Take away some of that butter on that ...you need some disappointment"😥😭😄👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Less is more I say.😃✌🏻
