I've been taking a short break away from social media for the past couple of weeks but I'm back up and running again.
Nothing nefarious, just a break before the horrors of orphan season begin again shortly.
Anyway, what better was to get back into it than this beautiful orphaned Bobuck or Short-eared possum.
Rescued around 6 weeks ago and being raised by Lauren, Bobucks are not something you see everyday and for me, this was a delightful first.
Bobucks are larger than the common Brushtail possum and they have a different geographical distribution being found at mainly higher altitudes.
Little Sooty is being bottle fed each day, as well as enjoying native browse and he will remain with Lauren for another 12 months until he is completely self sufficient and mature enough to go back to the wild.
What an unexpected privilege to meet young Sooty and thank you for making my day Lauren.

Very interesting how closely the heads/faces of the Bobucks resemble the flying foxes
I was thinking the same thing, especially the eyes.

💜💜🖤🖤💜💜🖤🖤
Much more pleasant than our American opossums.
A vegan possum very cute
I grew up in the United States with the description of Australia as strict and careful of development in the country and protective of the complex ecological systems. UA-cam sites like Batzilla the Bat educate me on animals I will never have the privilege of seeing in life. Unfortunately, it seems that development involving the clearing of natural lands is taking a horrific price on the natural lands and the inhabitants. Still, I hope Australia will realize, as we have an abysmal failure in the United States, to protect what can never be restored.
🦇❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What will happen to him after the year?
He'll be soft released back to the wild with a specialist carer at an appropriate site.
Thanks!
Did he come from the mountains or is he more local and just very uncommon there?
He came from an area north of us where the habitat suits this species.
Poor Thing Do You Really Need To Petite It That Hard
Oh dear, he’s amazingly cute, but how will he get used to being a wild animal again when he’s raised with so much human love? Not a criticism, I wouldn’t do anything differently if I were in charge of rescuing him. Just a concern.
He will gradually be less humanised over time. When he matures more, he will be in a large aviary with minimal human contact. He will become a territorial adult possum and will definitely not appreciate my presence. For now, he still needs contact as he would still be with his mum if he were in the wild.
@@laurenkittila9714 now that you explained it, I realize I saw the same in my cats. When tiny, needy, abandoned kittens they would not let go of me. They really act like human babies. Once older, healthy and secure, they do become very independent. And, given the chance, quite fierce hunters. 😧If it works for domestic cats, it should definitely work for a wild possum!
Good work of baby and "mum" to get from 350 g to 1 kg!💚🩷🩵
