They're different lanes lol, it's like saying do I want Korean fried chicken/ similar drunk foods catering to western palates, or do I want a traditional doenjang jjigae/ kimchi/ seollongtang/ bossam?
In the Anthony Bourdain episode of No Reservations when he visits Hop Kee and orders the Chinese dishes from his past and how there was the phantom menus, his guest says (essentially) that the food the non-Chinese and the Chinese families were eating were both equally delicious.
I can't comment, never had it... but my take on the westernized chinese food is that... if it taste good, cheap, fills you up... it can't be bad... having said that, never gonna compare it as authentic but still has its place.
“Chinese” comfort food ! I like authentic Asian cuisine ( especially 🇨🇳, 🇯🇵&🇰🇷) but PF Chang is not bad when you are looking for an alternative to it Cheers from San Diego California
A friend and I had New Year's Eve reservations at the new P.F. Chang on University Place in NYC. Even though the main dining room was half empty they placed us upstairs where it was dark, humid and cheerless. We asked to be moved downstairs. The service was very slow and my friend's dish was cold. They also gave us a special occasion menu for $65. Then they told us it was a mistake. The NYE menu was $100! When our dishes arrived the server dropped the serving spoon on the floor and replaced it with a second set of chopsticks and a fork. They neglected to give us the cocktail menu. We had to ask for it. My shrimp was tasty but no more so than any run-of-the-mill neighborhood take-out place. To sum up my experience: meh.
Foods evolved. It’s great to have creative people creating new taste or twists on ethnic foods. I love to go to a restaurant that have a mix of different ethnic origin foods. I love more diverse foods.
It’s a choice. A more expensive and maybe less authentic choice but still one nonetheless. Time will tell if PF Changs will survive in midtown but something tells me out of towners will flock to this. BTW have you guys been to the sister & less expensive place to Changs called Pei Wei. We had one in northern nj but it didn’t survive. Food was ok as well. Kinda like Panda Express but food made to order not steam table style.
So what about the ppl who don't have or know of a real Chinese food restaurant, I'm from Oklahoma and the only Chinese food we have are the Chinese own American Chinese style. And to this point no, I have never had PF Chang's, been to Panda and the one I've usually visited have gone down hill on there quality then others. But in this situation would ppl like me get a pass. Hell I'll admit that I don't know the first thing of Chinese food like really other then what I've seen you guys show and wish I could find somewhere around I live to experience the real thing.
That's the very definition of a 1st World problem. Because, in a 1st World Country, you have a plethora of options for every type of gastronomy. In a 3rd World Country, something like PF Changs is a blessing from the gods. Which is my case. But me personally, I go strictly for the ramen, deserts and drinks.
I don’t know what 3rd world country you are talking about. America is far from being the greatest country in the world!!!!!! Immigrants don’t know that America is Not a paradise. Paradise is only found in heaven if you are poor!!!!!! Vietnam have some exotic seafood such as gigantic beautiful & colorful snails, gigantic colorful cockroaches that looks like gigantic lobsters, gigantic crabs and gigantic lobsters plus other unique seafood. They may even have gigantic snakes too. I know that people in China eat snakes and dogs. Unique seafood in this so called America with freedom and choices are abalone and sea cucumber which don’t even exist in the Caucasian people’s world since these unique seafood are unknown to them. They are not served in restaurants.
My first of PF Changs experience was the one next to my apartment building in Long Beach, as a drunken late nite on the fly need for junk food noodles. I’m sorry but it was the worst experience ever, just so awful, sickeningly oily and artificial too salty and sweet sauces. I get people like those suburban chains but yuck, and these sit down chains are so expensive.
PF Chang is overpriced. Where I live, there are plenty of great Chinese restaurants that have better food and aren't overpriced. PF Chang also has a very limited menu. Why should I bother?
I love authentic Chinese food. I eat at such places every chance I get. Also, I do like PF Chang's. PF Chang's for me is more of place to go with less adventurous friends. Generally, my Asian friends turn me on to authentic Asian restaurants. Not being Asian, I'm not anywhere near an expert on authentic food.
No it's not wrong. While Chinese food is so much more than just PF chang's, it's great that PF chang is offering delicious and easily accessible Chinese food in the form a corporate chain.
Live and let live bro, it’s not as if criticism will make the food better there. They have a huge monument to “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” sitting in Union square right now😂
Trying to compare PF Chang against traditional mom and pop place is like comparing iPhones to Androids. They may have a lot of similarities and do the same things but their implementations are different and as such people will have their own preferences. Is it wrong to have your own preferences? No. Just as long as you make it difficult for others to have their own choice and force them out of the market with see shady tactics.
No, it's not wrong. I enjoy eating PF Chang's from time to time. I would eat it more if they didn't add sugar to it AT ALL. Some foods shouldn't even have sugar, if people likes sugary sauce then it has to be on the side not in the food. I would enjoy authentic chinese foods more than PF Chang's.
Most Americans didn’t grow up in NYC, San Francisco or a place like that. So, as a general rule, PF Chang isn’t competing with traditional Chinese Cuisine, but rather burgers, pizza, Olive Garden or Applebees. For 98% of Americans it’s a first baby step. Some will stick with it. Some will have broadened their views to later try the real thing. It serves it’s purpose. Overall it’s a positive thing.
I go to China town every summer just to walk around and try new things. Because I see them on UA-cam and tiktok. But I do love pf changs. I won't hold you. I do not think these big chains belong in the city. Nyc is for culture. Erase that and you erase the city.

That goes for who ever said Taco Bell is the Best Mexican Food… again HOW SWAY … I like PF Chang’s I also LOVE Chinese restaurants that you just know Grandma is in the back cooking or it’s her recipe that will never be changed. There is room to like it all but don’t start with the inspired is the better than the real thing.
The type of people who eat at PF Chang's are not going to like authentic Chinese food. And without suburabnites rolling in to have a meal, most NYC restaurants would close.
