I wish this stuff worked on me. Always looked up to these teachings growing up, but they never really stuck for me. The big thing that cured my laziness was learning physics. When entering physics you learn about a concept called inertia. Put simply this is a bodies tendency to resist change in motion. This, mixed with Newton's law that a body at rest will stay at rest, and a body in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an external force. Understanding these two things told me that we are all lazy by nature. And that Laziness will not fix itself. It can't be reasoned with. It's a matter of applying some kind of force (motivation) to create momentum. And once that momentum is built, all that inertia that was once keeping you lazy and at rest is now keeping you at high speed.
    .
I've found that some of the laziest people can also be some of the most motivated people. They have the most inertia. They are often the hardest to get going from a dead stop, but once they get going, it's very hard to stop them.

@Binath Gorakapitiya it may be a philosophy to some but it is still seen as a religion to others. A quick google search reveals it’s a debatable issue - far from a simple fact. It’s also an immaterial notion to Buddhism - a philosophy doesn’t make it any better or worse than a religion. Experiencing the teaching itself is more important than any dogmatic labels.

I have to say, the "thoughtlessness" bit did hit a mark with me.
Due to the pandemic last year, I spent a lot of time cooped up in my house. I would walk around the neighborhood to stay active. I would read a bit more, watch some TV, play video games. Etc... Yet it was in those quieter moments when I was overcome with a certain odd sensation... I felt as though for many years now, I'd been living my life thoughtlessly, not paying much attention or mind to a lot of things. I'd more or less just been moving with the flow... Because it was the easy thing to do. I would like to change this.

you were happy doing those things which was living in the moment and a fundamental part of the philosophies in mahayana buddhism.
You felt troubled and guilty when you thought about them - so it is not thoughtlessness which is the issue but thinking and evaluating based on past compared to present
As William Shakespeare said in Hamlet 'Nothing good, nothing bad, but thinking that makes it so' .
And also, if you spend your whole time thinking, then you have nothing to think about but thoughts instead of experiencing the world and life.

It was the exact opposite for me. My mind is almost always full of thoughts. Even when I'm playing a game for example, I start thinking about past or some intersting topic like the myth of ancient knowledge etc. I'm almost never fully living in the moment. Always thinking. When I had to stay home for months, I lost the activites I used to do to distract myself a bit and it was horrible because now I was thinking even more and sometimes I would just sit and think for days, even when eating or doing anything else. Even in my dreams I think about something and its suprising how detailed I can think in my dreams. But living like that for a long time made me extremely tired and now I'm trying to let go of any thought that comes to my mind so I can live in the moment instead of living inside my head. I want my mind to be empty of thoughts, and only filled with the current moment. Maybe then I can enjoy life more.

In today’s world especially, I think people need more sleep not less, as we are continuously sleep deprived, chugging on coffee and energy drinks, and wearing out all nighters as a badge of honor.

Lalalisa I think oversleeping is usually tied to medical conditions such as depression or sleep apnea. Quarantine has thrown off daily routines left and right thus even with more sleep one can feel down and fatigued; I’m speaking in general, you know yourself best of course! The obesity perspective is interesting and didn’t occur to me, it certainly could be the case. I was actually thinking more along the lines of the wildly held belief (in both eastern and western cultures) that getting up very early and squeezing in more productivity from the day is considered more industrious. That’s all fine and dandy as long as the person still gets a full 7-8 hours of sleep but that rarely happens these days- just a quick search reveals 1 in 3 adults is sleep deprived according to the cdc. I guess back in the old days when this advice was generated this might not have been much of an issue, but when applying it to today’s world one has to take it with a grain of salt. All I can say is I loooooove to sleep and my most productive and happiest days are when I get 8h plus a nap (a true luxury) in ;).

Thank you! I have been meditating for almost a decade now and had understood the teaching wrongly. I used to practice non-thinking with a strong concentration on the 5 elements. This made me feel dull and helpless in my mind, even afraid of living at times because I could not understand the evil things going on on the outside of my reality. Of course, I would feel the upsurge of joy, childlike innocence, but the mind was unable to make decisions. Now after realizing my fauld and making the effort to feed my mind with knowledge, putting myself in situations where likeminded people share their presence and experiences I feel much better. I love being at service to others, sharing joy and laughter, support. The world is a wonderful place to be, when you can direct how you want to interact with it.

The heart (as the main thinking source, the brain is just the physical component needed to process the taught)
      The physical body
The Ruh (spirit) - when you die the spirit would leave your body.

@@timothyogwynn3410 In my opinion there is misinterpretation here. The cause of the suffering is not optional, the suffering itself is. For example in our current culture we suffer when a loved one dies, but it does not need to be so. Many cultures throughout history have celebrated death as the next step, in doing so there is a sort of mental alchemy at play, the same stimulus that causes one to suffer can lead another to rejoice. Its all in the mind of the beholder, we can choose to suffer or we can choose to not to and find peace in the inevitable.

I have wasted two years of my life...I found it so hard to get out of bed and when I tell myself there is a job to do my body would not move.
I ignored the notification for this video on my phone, "Ah just another video to tell me how bad I am doing at life" the voice in my head said. I opened my laptop and there was the notification again before the voice had a chance I already clicked. I watched and listened to the words I already knew. Yet, something was different this time.
I always put off checking on my ferrets one more time before I go to sleep because it's dark and cold...and some voice in my head said: "What am I so afraid of?" And I kinda just sat there trying to find the voice that always made up excuses to do things and it wasn't there...I got up without realising and did the job.
Yet I know full well that the voice will be back, "Oh you don't have to do it you can do it tomorrow...it's just one entire cake you can start eating healthy tomorrow..." you get my drift.
And the weird thing is I'm kinda okay with that, all I need to ask myself is "What am I afraid of?" I found that out thanks to this video. : )

Trust me, after sitting around and just relaxing all day for several months straight, I can tell you that relaxing, being lazy (call it what you wish), gets old.
Yes we can get get tired, yes work can suck sometimes, but the thing people don’t realize is that to truly be happy, we *must* balance out relaxation and freedom with work and obligations, or else our activities that we look to for pleasure will no longer satisfy us as much.
Please take these words to heart. Most people work so hard to where they can relax for a *LONG* time, which can lead to overindulgence, and then the question of
“Why am I still unhappy if I have everything I want?”
Work gives us a sense of purpose.

Huang Po is a prominent example of one who stressed the importance of letting go of all conceptual dualistic thought. Good deeds for others will lead to good karma, bad deeds for others will lead to bad karma, however transcending thought and the experiencer will remove all karma and one will "attain" the state of Buddhahood or enlightenment.

There are illnesses named chronic fatigue and depression and even anemia, wich can cause someone avoiding having activities. Maybe it was not the case of the obese man in this Buddha story but even in a not very remote past this kind of medical conditions was easily misunderstood and mistaken or labored as laziness, too. Of course, at that time the medicine was not very advanced and people didn't have so much information about such kind of illnesses and they couldn't differentiate properly one from another. Of course in this story the cause of that rich man's laziness was excess of food and lack of exercising, but we always need to be aware about these illnesses to avoid judging someone falsely. I remember beeing accused of just being lazy by someone who was very spiritual but lacking in basic knowledge but it came out after a long fase facing burn out and PTSD accompanied with depressive symptoms I was suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.

Am 15 only and am hindu but I listen to Buddha thoughts and apply them in my life . Lord shiva says don't disrespect any god because if you disrespect any god is like disrespecting him . Thank Buddhists for your valuable thoughts

Buddhism is not a religion,it's a way of living in the world of yin and yang,so follow it with any guilt.

What principles? The cessation of desire is the main goal to Buddist practice. Do you follow that?

  • @Garl_Vinland

“Do you desire to know the source of your ailment?”
    Yes.
“Then you fail, because you must not desire.”
    Then Buddha flew away.

if you look at any "enlightened master" "guru" whatver all they do is sit.
the whole point of yoga is to eventually have you sit on your ass with no pain for sitting there.
      thats the whole point.

Thoughtlessness is the source of laziness.
But when this thinking faculty, along with the rest, exercised to its extreme, realizes the beauty of seeing things as they are... right WISDOM.
Then, thoughtlessness is effortless & a PEACE in ITSELF.

Science has at the moment come to the conclusion that caloric restriction is one of the few proven ways to lengthen your life span and preserve your youth longer. It's not fun or great but when dealing with task that are life long takes great discipline and control.

Science has known that for a very long time, friend.
Also: To lose weight means to burn more calories than you take in.
In todays age, it is the processed, fatty foods, soda, and lack of activity that causes obesity.
You can very easily lose weight *just* by replacing soda with water, snacking on vegetables/nuts/fruit instead of chips/chocolate/sugary drinks- if you do that *you will lose weight*. All these replacement foods have lower calorie counts, but remember that moderation is key.
Dont eat for the sake of eating, only eat to satiate hunger.
