What’s funny is that Apoballis used to be classified as Schismatoglottis, and some people still consider them Schismatoglottis, and you had one sitting behind you the whole video. Their care is very similar to that.
@@GoodGrowing just don’t keep the soil as moist as Schismatoglottis! Mine rotted. They get really droopy when thirsty but still like drying out in chunky aroid mix between waterings. They also seem to appreciate humidity but I’m in Florida so that’s not a problem even indoors.
I got an Apoballis from Gabriella plants in the US! It is very easy to care for. I treat it like more or less like your average aroid- let it dry a little between waterings; it's in front of a west facing window, and my humidity is always around 55% with humidifier help. It grows like a calathea, with the leaves emerging rolled up. Gabriella plants still has them in stock and they are on sale! 😀
That dead stick plants now on my wishlist!!!!!! I’m buying more plants like that or that have fat caudex’s that drop all their leaves in winter so it looks dead!!! Love it!!
I also was curious about the Apoballis acuminatissima , a quick search yielded this: Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’ is native to Indonesia where it grows like many other Aroids in humid tropical forests. The care for Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’ is similar to many other Aroids, and can most closely be compared to Anthuriums. (copied from a care guide from foliacollective, the picture they had on that page was stunning with mostly silver leaves) And apparently it´s toxic to pets!
My biggest concern when it comes to rare plants is whether or not they've been grown from tissue culture or other methods that ensure the wild population hasn't been impacted. There's a lot of poaching when it comes to rare and unusual plants. Plant poaching is a huge issue. I want to make sure that every plant in my collection was ethically sourced. Wild populations are essential to maintain ecosystems and the insects and animals that depend on the plants.
Hey Kat, that’s great to hear that you are cautious when purchasing more uncommon plants. I am one of the owners of GrowTropicals and House of Kojo and the reason we started was because we saw how many plants were being poached (especially during Covid) and wanted to offer a great selection (we have been collecting for many years) but in an ethical way. When we started, all of our sales were from our own propagations; but now we also source plants from NL among other places where we can be certain they are tissue cultured or otherwise mass propagated in a sustainable way. We have never and will never offer any plants for sale where the provenance is uncertain.
I love my Dragon’s Tail so very much. I found a 3 foot trough/pot and the newest leaf has 6 Fenestrations. No I don’t have room but I’m making it work. Enjoy!
Just the thumbnail makes me smile 😊 you are so genuinely excited when your package comes in, it is really infectious 🤩 makes me want to order plants as well, just because the unpacking part is so much fun. You go girl!!
It's probably not too practical up in Merry ol England, but if you like the dead stick plant, here in Vegas we're have a plant called ocotillo that has similar vibes but it's landscape more idk if you have any yard action.
I love plant #6, the dragon tail. I'm not sure I could take care of a crawling plant inside. My aunt gave me a cutting for the common arrowhead/syngonium. It is traveling from pot to pot outside on my patio. Funnily enough, the classic syngonium is a gorgeous deep green with bright white veins. It's more robust than my pink syngonium as well as my three kings syngonium. I ended up putting the pink syngonium outside in the bright shade of my patio because the pink was fading out to a pale lime green with pink veins. Some of the newer leaves had been coming in a weird shade of brown. All of my plants are under grow lights for 12-15 hours a day.
Love alocasia too! It’s my favorite plant! Your melo seems like the same thing as the maharani; is it? I’m from Quebec, Canada, and we have alocasia maharani over here. They seems pretty similar. And I have to tell you : in another of your videos, you’ve talked about your peperomia sarcophylla, and I cannot get my hands on it here, in North America! I’ve been asking lots of plant shops, small plant businesses, people who import plants from abroad: there is no way to have one, and it’s driving me crazy!!!! I want one so badly! And I know House of Kojo sells them, but I don’t live in the UK! I really hope we can have them here in Canada some day!
I think the maharani is a darker form of the melo. The melo is meant to be super silvery grey, though mine looks darker so might be a maharani 🤷♀️ I've heard the same about the sarcophylla not being available in the states! I wonder if I can find a way to bring a leaf over next time I come 🙊
I got a delivery from house of kojo today too, and I have to say I'm a little jealous of your plants! I bought myself 2 hoya, neither of which look in great condition and one of them was supposed to come in a hanger but didn't. I got my friend a hoya australis lisa which looks amazing, so regretting not just getting myself one of those 😢 I have seem to have really bad luck ordering full plants, think this is my call to stick to bare root cuttings!
I wonder if they only have good packaging on larger items? I placed an order with them and grow tropicals, as they have taken over one from the other (didn't know at the time of ordering) and neither of the packages had anything on them to state plants were inside/this way up/branding, they were plain boxes and both were crushed. Both orders had pests and I lost a plant on each order. Glad to see your plants were in good condition the ones you got were very unique, haven't seen most of them before!
oh no!! sorry to hear you had such a nightmare with them! I've personally not ordered any bigger plants from them so can't comment. I hope you reached out and got refunded though!
@@GoodGrowing oooo! I might have to try that out as well, I’m trying to figure out how I want it to grow it out. Oh yeah! Totally getting into more cacti and succulents because of your recent uploads. 😂
Thanks for the vid and honesty as always. Spooky as I’ve just ordered the dead stick plant from Etsy and I have recently gotten the little spiky dude too, which has beautiful dark flowers on mine now. Hope you enjoy them all.
The rhaphidophora decursiva is a climber but mine is currently just growing sideways and is taking up tooooo much space, I love it but it might be getting rehomed cos it is growing crazy.
oh i recently got a orbea! been after one for years! have you google the flowers? there are so many types! i think ours is the same type and i believe the flowers are deep burgundy but there are much much pretties ones out there hard to find in the uk 😢
My decursiva is a pretty fast grower, but not quite as fast as the tetrasperma. I would say I maybe get a new leaf every month from mine. The tetrasperma grows like a friggin pothos lol you can’t stop that thing!
I killed both my melo..one in leca and other in soil. But my jacklyn, odora, black velvet, silver dragon, polly are all doing great. I guess I'll buy another 😂
Tbf I think you dodged a bullet with returning the amazonica. Never come across one that didn’t have mealies or spider mites. It is a spider mite magnet 🧲
Wow that akuna matata plant is pretty! 😂
Definitely looks like a calathea/ Aglaonema baby!
I've got a Raphidora discurvia and I'm pretty sure they need a pole. Beautiful dark green foliage
Yeah otherwise they tend to run I've noticed
Mine crawls!
You can train it to climb and the leaves started to mature
I'm a big fan of my Decursiva too! I think it's so underrated.
Really loved the Euphorbia! Appreciate your transparency about the mealie bugs too and the realities of needing to quarantine and inspect new plants

I've been eyeing these but was worried it'd have difficult care like a calathea...

The dragons tail will crawl unless it has something to climb. I repotted mine onto a moss pole and it took to it really well…
ooh thanks for the tip! will defo be putting it on a pole soon then
Love the dragon's tail! That was a bargain! Looking forward to getting one when i have more space for big plants 🌱🌿
When in doubt I will always search the plant name on the kew website for the correct name or synonyms🥰
ooh that's smart!
Also to add I use House of Kojo and they're generally great and one of my faves
Just the thumbnail makes me smile 😊 you are so genuinely excited when your package comes in, it is really infectious 🤩 makes me want to order plants as well, just because the unpacking part is so much fun. You go girl!!
unpacking plants is so fun!! 🥰
I have my decursiva on a moss pole!! It loves it, my top leaf has 5 lobes now!!
ooh that's good to know! I defo think I want to put mine on a pole sooner than later!
I have an orbea decaisneana living in full sun in Spain, and it's huge and flowers all year long ❤
I have the dragons tail, it’s very easy going 👍 It is a fast grower. I named mine the beast 😂🇨🇦
haha love the name! glad it's growing so well!

Yeah syngoniums are super sensitive to light and even indirect sun outside can be too bright for them. Either that or you’ve got pests 🤷🏻♀️

I've heard the same about the sarcophylla not being available in the states! I wonder if I can find a way to bring a leaf over next time I come 🙊
I'm pretty sure the Melo is a hybrid with Maharani as one parent.

oh no! sorry to hear you didn't have the best time! have you reached out to them about it?
I had that issue with them too, both orders placed had pests! and I lost a plant on each order. They longed out the help and giving my money back too
Plant 2 is beautiful!
I wonder if they only have good packaging on larger items? Great plants Emma!
Love that apoballis plant, the colours are stunning. Not ever heard of it though, would love an update or care tips video on this one in the future.
right! such gorgeous colours! and yes will defo get a care video up once I figure it out... assuming I don't kill it 😅
Over all they look ok to me,
Just increase the water a little ..your hair is 💖
💚🌵🍀🌿💚
loveee house of kojo, I think i need an alocasia melo now, I got my cuprea y azlaniii from them and they look amazing.
use the discount code & you can get it for cheaper 😉
Really excited for how you’re going to pot that dragons tail. Hope all is well 💚
I think ima go moss pole as some friends have said they love them!

Hey Emma! Thanks for another great vid! Never seen any of these plants and now I want them all! ..and I haven’t wanted any plants in a while lol
So glad that I could share some more weird and wonderful ones!
Thanks for the vid and honesty as always. Spooky as I’ve just ordered the dead stick plant from Etsy and I have recently gotten the little spiky dude too, which has beautiful dark flowers on mine now. Hope you enjoy them all.
What a coincidence! 🥰
Nice plants. If you are looking for another weird sucullent, I just bought an Adromischus Marianiae Herrei red coral .
Ooooooh that’s so fun!
The rhaphidophora decursiva is a climber but mine is currently just growing sideways and is taking up tooooo much space, I love it but it might be getting rehomed cos it is growing crazy.
maybe you need a pole for yours too?
Apobollis! I just ran across some of these (no label) at a local box store and thought it was a schismatoglottis!
Literally never heard of it before!
My Melo is way lighter in color , iv not seen one that dark . It is beautiful either way . I use semi hydro as well for all my alocisia.
Yeah same! I’m not mad as it’s still cool but defo doesn’t look like other melo I’ve seen
oh i recently got a orbea! been after one for years! have you google the flowers? there are so many types! i think ours is the same type and i believe the flowers are deep burgundy but there are much much pretties ones out there hard to find in the uk 😢
oh the flowers are soooo cool!

I’ve had the same issue with melos. Im gunna continue to blame it on a bad batch 😅
Homalomena purple sword be careful when watering mine went to mush
ooh good to know thanks!
I had the Selby and it was a pain the butt and died a slow death 🤷🏼♀️
That melo looks more like a maharani tbh
Yeah I was kind of thinking that too
I think that’s a homalomena
Tbf I think you dodged a bullet with returning the amazonica. Never come across one that didn’t have mealies or spider mites. It is a spider mite magnet 🧲
ooh okay that is good to know! maybe I won't try to go for another one
