- Here's a recording with great soundboard quality of the Toots Thielemans Quartet with a young Jeff Berlin on fretless bass from November 1977 in Bremen, Germany. The band is phenomenal with Toots being his usual ebullient self but for me the most interesting part is that it is a unique look into the early musical stages of Berlin who was still on the fretless after having been inspired to pick up the instrument after hearing Jaco Pastorius' debut album, but other than the similarities in sound there are few "Jacoisms" in Berlin's playing who already had his own signature phrasing that he would go on and develop further as his career progressed. He would also soon abandon the fretless for good to distance himself from Jaco's style and his many imitators. Full Band: Toots Thielemans - harmonica, guitar and whistling, Jeff Berlin - fretless bass, Rob Franken - keyboards, Bruno Castellucci - drums.

I haven't listened to this for a month now, and it sounds good-as-hell! Never loses its spizzazz as good as the day they laid it down.
Fantastic musicians!
I agree totally. No weak links in this quartet for sure. Thanks for taking the time to leave such an enthusiastic comment. Greetings from Norway.
I hadn't heard this before, but it's really good. Thanks for uploading!

Yes, there are some similiarities between the two for sure. Berlin was/is hugely inspired by Jaco, even if he admits to it or not.

You're welcome Pierre. Thanks for commenting.
"Toots" I love the name, I've never heard of him. One thing I do know, the way he plays that thing is how he got his name. Great stuff!
He was the cat playing harmonica on the Sesame Street theme (the American kid's TV show where The Muppets started).
Glad you enjoyed the recording, but you must certainly have heard him even though you couldn't rememeber the name. He has played with a host of famous musicians ranging from Benny Goodman to Jaco Pastorius. With the latter he played on "Word Of Mouth" and "Holiday For Pans" as well as the Japan 1982 tour and various other live performances :)
If i understand you right, here Toot is playing guitar too...
Yes, he plays guitar on "The Mooch" and plays guitar and whistles simultaneously on "Bluesette" ;) Thanks for commenting George.
Harmonica is a diatonic instrument so it's the feeling of all other musicians who create this superb live
That's good information!
