  • A lot of questions come to us about how we grow a big family and run a fun homestead with NOT a lot of money. So, we share a few tips with you about what we do (and don't do) to make it possible.

    Why do we UA-cam?
    We're sharing with you our Catholic-infused hobby farm home life as if you sat down with us on the front porch. Let us tell you about how we live our life as a large family that's trying to be made holy through the grit and glory of domestic life on our Ohio homestead.
    At Front Porch Catholic, we believe that, "What the world is in particular need of today is the CREDIBLE WITNESS of people...capable of opening the hearts and minds of many to the desire for God and for true life." (Benedict XVI, Porta Fidei 15)
    Our family of 10 is answering that call to witness by vlogging 2x/week, using video publishing as a way to turn our 'cloistered' family life into an 'apostolic' endeavor that can be accessed for free by anyone with the internet!

    About the beard…. What you really should’ve said was that growing a beard is yet another money saver - a way to stretch the budget- because you’re not buying blades or disposable razors :)

    I'm intrigued. I was thinking anything over 50k a year is a lot of money to me. My husband and I together make about 38k a year and lately neither of us have been getting enough hours to cover rent and we both have to search for new jobs. My husband is in HVAC and I have been working wherever is most flexible so I didn't have to put our 1 child in daycare and we really don't have any family available to babysit. We don't really have friends either. It has been tough. We also don't know much about how to be an adult despite definitely being adults. I don't even know what a "home equity line of credit" is and have never lived in a house before. I don't have any unique skills yet, and everyone in our life is poor so there's no way we are getting help from others. Despite all this your video gave me hope. Any house under 150k around here will be dilapidated, literally falling apart and most likely filled with mold or lead. I have considered needing to move somewhere more affordable but then we would have no friends and no family. We have another baby on the way and are new Catholics. I want so badly to live a slow, simple life and stay home with my children. We still have a lot of work to do, but thank you for making it feel a little more realistic.

      I'm glad our story gives you hope!!! I'll pray that you and your spouse receive the graces needed to know your next steps. Faithfulness goes a long way especially when money does not. Stay faithful to the Lord - and btw WELCOME to the Catholic Church! Maybe reach out to your pastor and see if he can help guide you or connect you to good people in your locale. Stay the course!

    Thank you for this insight. I feel like a large factor to consider is how much the mortgage is. There's a good chance we'll be moving back to California when my husband finishes his PhD and I worry whether the place he hopes to work will pay enough to afford a home at all. Their highest paid teacher (they pay more when they have more kids) lives in what looked like a 2 bedroom house with 10 or more kids. (It was years ago when I visited and I might be wrong on how many bedrooms but it was tight and it haunts me to this day, lol.... and now home prices have only gone up.) It's still a few years off though, so we'll see what the actual circumstances are then.

      Glad we could share and give you a little hope. A plus for us is that, since he is a teacher, he does have a chunk of time in summer where he can pick up other work IF needed. Or tend to the farm and supplement that way (which is what we prefer to do, of course).

    How did mom work full time for a year and a half with children?

    • @FrontPorchCatholic
      @FrontPorchCatholic  3 роки тому +1

      I was in a part office, part ministry, job that allowed me to bring my baby to work with me all day every day. I had a little crib in my office for my baby.... got a lot accomplished during his naps and was able to hold him during meetings, etc. It was a blessed and understandably unique situation for which I will always be grateful. Thanks for asking!

    Do you tithe 10% from your paycheck each week?

    • @FrontPorchCatholic
      @FrontPorchCatholic  3 роки тому +1

      Most of our tithing happens "in bulk" at different points throughout the year - at least the tithe that accounts for coming directly from employment. That dollar amount is pretty steady year-in, year-out, so it's predictable enough. Any other gifts, chunks of income from livestock sales or 'safety nets' get tithed out as they come in. Thanks for watching, Dan!

    How is your Catholic school Dan? Is it Catholic?

    • @FrontPorchCatholic
      @FrontPorchCatholic  Рік тому +1

      Hey there! I'm assuming you're asking about the school Joe teaches at and yes, it is Catholic and the theology department is orthodox. :) The school as its own chapel, weekly Mass and Confessions, 30+ kids that pray the DM chaplet after school everyday, etc. Thanks for the question.

      Nope. Just regular ol’ Roman Catholics who love tradition.
