When my children were under my care, we had a huge garden which supplied most of our vegetables, and I canned everything. We also had dairy goats, pigs and chickens. The stunning healthy nutrition taken in by vegetables, by good soil maintenance that you give to your children is the best kept secret unfortunately. Our children are still healthy adults, and they all love gardening.

I live in suburban Charlotte, NC and we just planted our first garden and have 9 chickens coming in a month!

Great hearing y'all talk about this topic and treat it in a realistic way. Our farm did indeed FLOP badly. Ten years later, we returned to (a different plot of) land and are making a second go of it, a little bit wiser and older. Thanks Eric and Jason!

What about living on a farm and you're too far from a Catholic Church to go to Mass every week? I've wondered about the Catholic immigrants trying to settle in the U.S. and being kind of forced to live packed together in cities ... and being unable due to finances, but also due to not having Catholic churches in rural areas as the country grew out west. It seems that most churches were Protestant, and the Protestants have never had an obligation to attend weekly services.
