    I'm about to turn 53. Worked 15+ years in Escrow/Home loan processing arena. When the rates go up, my job is at risk. Laid off in June, took 2 months off and started playing hold em tournaments at a newer (5 yrs) racetrack/casino 20 miles north of St Paul. Chatting up with dealers and eventually one informed me of a poker dealer training starting in Sept. I'm just wrapping up my first week and I already know I'm going to love it. There is SO much to learn and keep track of...far more than a player can imagine. they have tourneys and games ready to slate....all they need is more DEALERS!! I'm psyched, thanks for all the info and tips!
    DON'T FORGET THE RAKE!!!!! LOL

    8:20 nailed it for me and less stress. Tired of having to think about work and keeping tabs on so much. Going into Monday with 30-40 emails every week, back to back pointless meetings all day...then just to get Sat + Sun off and rush around doing errands while everyone else is off too....rather have weekdays off and working off-hours so I can do errands / appointments when everyone else is slaving 9-5.

    If only I had time ... a second lifetime ... I might have chosen to do this after listening to that. It does seem to be an honorable and prosperous career journey. And, as you pointed out, it has the rare quality of being able to be done all over the world. And from my life experiences, I can assure you, the SINGLE most important thing you can do in your life is to TRAVEL. It's a BIG world, with many wonderful people, places and things to be experienced within it. In my humble opinion, if you don't travel, you have done yourself, AND the world, a great disservice.

    Hi Y'all! I just started a job as a 3rd party banker for Blackstone Gaming since casinos in CA need an outside party to have financial stakes at the tables and I've actually become just as interested in being a dealer. Although, my job is more of an observer and making sure the payouts and games are being run correctly, it's not something I had considered before. I'm hoping my time here will lead to a dealer position since, we are prohibited from accepting tips.

    I've been dealing for 30 years. That's about 27 years too long. Everything Dave says here is not necessarily wrong but what he said is purely academic. Being on the job day-in day-out is going to wear on you immensely. Of course most of this has to do with your temperament as an individual; but, i'm here to tell you there are VERY FEW people who can actually handle it over the long haul. I stayed in it mostly because I trapped myself with a family etc. In the interest of saving time...this is the 'take away'. Try it out but do not consider it your end game...you may very well regret it. If it has the same effect on you as it does myself; as well as, most dealers I've seen, known, talked with etc. You'll end up hating humanity. It's a dirty ugly business full of dirty ugly people. I'd only truly wish the job on my enemies.

    • @JoeDoe2
      @JoeDoe2 2 роки тому +3

      I wanted to see some live roulette games in action and found youtube videos where the dealers didn't say a word. They're busy, and couldn't care less about hearing or telling stories. Such banter with customers would waste time and be a distraction anyway. It was like an assembly line at Ford. Spin wheel, take the losers chips, payout the winners. Rinse and repeat.
      Haven't seen any 'dirty ugly people' yet, only folks with money to burn. I watched a couple lose a bunch of money on a spin at Circus Circus and the dejected look on the woman's face spoke volumes. They weren't 'having fun in Vegas.' I wonder if they even knew how bad the odds were against them. The dealer was a young guy in his 20s and he never spoke to them about anything. Just took their money. So I don't know where people keep getting all this 'must be sociable and have a great personality' from.

      Interesting, I’ve been a dealer for nearly 7 years now and I still love the job, literally the only thing that causes me to dislike any part of it is always management related, but that always seems to work itself out in the end and those people never last, for the most part we’re entertainers, once you switch your mindset from service industry to entertainment perhaps you’ll understand, I really should be at a KYO because I always make good tips

      @@Shinobi6677 Some people can do it. You're an anomaly; But, there isn't one person I have ever seen deal that hasn't had more than a few moments where the look on their face shows how they really feel about it all. 13:55 "Once you get full-time."......Unless it's based on seniority, and I've never heard that seniority has anything to do with anything (like in many union jobs), what's to keep a casino from keeping someone at full-time forever? Or graveyard shift when they'd rather have day shift.....forever?
    The casino job boards advertise for part-time dealers so that they can get out of paying full-time benefits. They'll work you up to 38 hours and think nothing of it. Don't like it? Quit! I'd like to hear some tips for how a part-timer becomes a full-timer without sleeping with their boss. Or how they're finding openings to go from part-time to full-time to get full-timer benefits. If part-timers got the same benefits as full-timers, then there would be no reason for casinos to say, 'we don't have any full-time openings right now.' That's what most industries do to keep labor costs down. Employer/employee loyalty with cradle-to-grave benefits and a retirement pension are things the WWI and WW2 generations enjoyed. Which casinos have two-weeks paid vacation and a 401(K)? Even if you get a 401(K), it's a year before the company will match the deductions. You should do any entire video on casino dealer benefits, like part-time vs. full-time and how to get full-time. Benefits besides 20 minute breaks and cold stale food that you don't have time to eat.

    After listing some of the best paying casinos, can you now make a video listing the 'break-in houses' so that people know where to apply without having experience yet? Also, I'd like to know which ones will take you if you only know one or two games, and teach you the rest, or let you learn others after you're on the payroll. I'd like to know how many games they put you on when first hired out of training, or if they are some remotely located casino that has their own in-house training. Are they putting you on a different game every day, or week? Or do they let you get established (and therefore, faster) on just one game for awhile before putting you on another? Can dealers ever get away with saying, "I only want to deal (fav game)" if it's not craps or poker? How likely is it to get hired in doing just poker without learning other table games really well and proving yourself on those first? Have you heard of people breaking their backs standing up (especially craps, leaning over all the time), and telling their bosses, "I either have to switch to poker (to sit down) or I'll have to quit due to back problems? What would they likely be told? Does CEG teach all forms of poker well enough so that a person can skip the other games? Is it a course fee for each type of poker? Where else can someone practice and learn? Playing the game and not having to deal with all the chips is not the same as dealing the game, I don't believe.

    • @nolanvolens5727
      @nolanvolens5727 2 роки тому +1

      After a year or two of competence (you won't be considered otherwise) you can apply to become what is known as a "dual rate" when the casino posts an internal notice that they are seeking dealers to acquire this position. This is the first stage of moving up. When you attain this you will deal some days and supervise on others, depending on the needs of the casino. When you are a dealer you will get tokes, and be paid your dealer wage. When you are a supervisor you will get a much higher hourly wage than a dealer, but no tokes. If the dealers are part of a union you will no longer be a union member. After a year or two of competence at that, you can apply to become a "full" supervisor when the opportunity arises, and you will never deal again. Then, as time goes on and job postings are made you can apply to move up to pit manager, then floor manager, shift manager, etc.

    I only stay for the money. I hate everything else, everyday I feel like a newbie working their because they have so many supervisors with their own set of rules. No mater how good I try to be, they always fine something bad about me. Hopefully 2 more years and I’m done

    You can't really teach personality and a lot of dealers lack it........it would be nice if it was more respected in casinos but unfortunately some of the people who make decisions don't really have strong personality's so they really don't value that....

      Anyone who has ever had their hours turned completely around, either because of a job or just cause they're a natural night owl, knows what a pain it is. You're asleep when the world is awake and vice versa. I'm a night owl and I hate it. It's hard to take care of any personal business when the world outside of casinos is shut down. Errands, phone calls, shopping, getting your car fixed, anything. You can't just suddenly become a day person on your days off, then switch back to nights for work.

    Being puked on is not a great story to even listen to, much less having to convey. Gross. Talk about dirty baby diapers while you're at it. How exciting.
