Did a ten minute vlog on my channel on the new TIS849 I received from TIS. Very nice and a much improved model on the old 859. The indication without batteries and retractable tips are great. Mine having been donated is now off to a local college. Good work again!
The old TIS unit appears to very similar spec to my Fluke T150. The increased resistance range on the new model would be handy for testing solenoid valves and all in all it seems to tick alot of boxes. I always go for functionality over branding, this indicator is something I'd definitely consider purchasing.
Hi Alvin. I just picked up the new CEF catalogue and they have this at £89.95 ex-VAT (page 1423, code 2222-1574). That's much cheaper than I was expecting: I got the counter bod to verify it! The older model 845 is listed in there at £56.95.

Am looking for new toys. Yes thinking about the martindail what if the natural has failed or the switch is stuck on the phase side single pole testing would be a life saver and not just a good thing.
Often using my tester in noisy workshops with equippent running that buzzer is very useful. For me the capacitance checking alone is worth it but the buzzer is the iceing on the cake.
Well I’m rather pleased that I’ve just picked one of these up now. I dropped into my local Eddie’s to use the loo and get some free coffee and lo! A calibration day was being conducted by those crafty TIS bods as means to offer discount on stuff you didn’t know you needed. Sound familiar? I found myself walking away with a soon-to-be-refilled bladder, a soon-to-be emptier wallet and one of these babies in my hot little hand. TBH I imagined leaving it in the box and taking it back as I felt the chap from TIS (let’s call him Chad) had rather oversold it. He’d tried to chuck in a 560 clam meter for a lower price too, and it was this that had nudged my memory - “hang on, didn’t DSES do a vid on this or something like it recently?” Turns out you did, and favoured the Klein CL2300 over the TIS 560 quite considerably. Sorry Chad. So, grateful for the steer on that, and the (much more favourable) review on this. I think I’ll keep it and use it instead of the Fluke T5-1000 that I’ve been carrying for years, although I’ll keep it about, as it still operates as an ammeter which this doesn’t. Might still have to look at the Klein though....
Ah yes, that's where they get you, those free calibration days! Although to be fair, the Klein is not an earth leakage meter like the TIS560, but the 560 is pretty useless with its 20mA full scale deflection when investigating a trippy 30mA RCD as all it does is show OL (no shit, I know it's over limit, I need to know by how much!) Also, the Klein was end of line. CEF did me a good price on it which I thought was down to them liking me, but it turns out they wanted the damn thing off the shelf so they could put something new in its place! Still, this 859 voltage indicator is quite nice. I've been using it in anger for a couple of weeks now!
Back in the early 1990's the first electrician I worked with was a guy in his late 50's and he used a small lamp which had an internal motorised buzzer with multimeter test probes on. Cannot remember after all these years who made it.
@@dsesuk It wasn't a Wiggy which was popular. But instead a black tube type device with a neon? type of lamp at one side and made a very audiable noise when powered.

Thanks for review. What I saw in it, that i didn't like was, that the multimeter function and buzzing is too slow. I also disliked the fact that you have to hold a button to get single pole phase reading.
I must admit, despite the review this model didn't remain as my go-to and I soon fell back to my TIS845 which has been on my hip ever since. It was the retractable shrouds I couldn't get on with.
Interesting. There are lots of models that are similar to TIS 845, but there are two things that I dislike with those too. 1. There is no RCD trip button (to see if it's ghost voltage i.e. fluke t130) 2. The main handle shroud tears easily. I've seen wiha model with rcd trip button, but for that price I'd rather get fluke. Although I dislike these new fluke models too, because their cables are really thick. @@dsesuk
Similar to my fluke T150 but cheaper lol.. The rcd test function is not really useful as on the T150, like you say, but what happens if the rcd doesn't trip? Will it blow the tester up? It's only a resistor accross line & earth anyway but useless for testing RCDs as per BS7671. That klein was awful on capacitance.. I nearly fell asleep waiting for a reading 😂 what I really want to know is.. Do I still need a proving unit or does my T150 self test prove it? I know it's really a functional test of the Leds, display, cable etc, but I don't want anymore junk in my van 😭 great demo Dave.
I'd say that the inbuilt test function is just a lamp test - it doesn't prove the thing is capable of correctly reading an applied voltage, so you still need the proving unit I'm afraid (or a known good source of supply).

My proving unit lives in the Fluke case with the Metrel, so is always with us. Can't say I've ever used it out on site though. I do check against a known good supply, but nice to have the PU there is perhaps there isn't any other supply at all!
I haven't experienced enough to say it's the best on the market, but it's the best I have used personally, and at the price point it's good value for money. I do use it, in fact as the soft case has a belt loop, I carry it about my person daily as part of the toolbelt so it's my go-to tester for safe isolation, polarity checking and continuity. I haven't had cause to use many of the other functions such as capacitance or even the Electric Field function which I showed in both this video and a more recent one on capacitance, but it's handy to know that feature set is there and ready should I need it.
Thanks I’m using the megger tpt320 but had it for a number of years and is a bit worse for wear so I’m looking to invest in another and it seems like a lot of the two pole testers are coming from the same factory as there very similar in use just aesthetically different. TIS was always the underdog and not as recognised as ur megger kewteck and flukes etc so yeah look as if they’ve stepped it up. On a separate note I saw ur on the front of this months electricians magazine I can see u being on playboys cover to soon 😭
@@iqyyazdani7951 Ha! Yes, that was me. They wanted a fat man on the front cover and went for an angle where you couldn't see my face! Notice the effort they also went to by colouring the rim of my McHat in Scolmore blue instead of McYellow! Going back to the TIS, the only gripe I have is the shrouded tips. The shrouds are spring loaded, so they're good from a safety point of view and for complying with GS38, but if you're trying to check a fuse or something then they can get in the way a bit. That's the only downside though, and it remains on my hip ready for action!
Looks ok, but like others, I use the fluke, have had it ages and its very robust, I have seen the TIS stuff in cities and very nearly bought the mft Pro, but I have always been put off by it looking a bit cheap and fisher price looking, so have always stuck to Megger or fluke which is what was always in college.

Then the mft Pro I nearly bought, I realised I had to spend the same amount on extras to benefit from the additional functions, and I wasn't keen on the design of the graphical display looked a bit early Windows 90s to me, and that was why I bought a 1741.

Vibration is for visually impaired electricians that can’t see the LEDs. So it beeps sometimes and vibrates at other times. And one of them has a two wire phase rotation function, I bet that works perfectly. The RCD test function is used for circuit location rather than RCD compliance. You forgot the MOST important thing what safety category are they?
I had its predecessor a few years ago, which was recalled as it did not indicate dangerous voltages if the batteries were flat. I quite liked it, I don't recall it having a removable lead, so thats a new bonus. As for the RCD tripping feature, I found it occasionally useful on CU's that were not helpfully labeled (As if!). It gave you 50/50 head start on identifying the circuit you might be working on, saved a bit of time. I particularly liked the better resistance function. Much more useful for quick fault finding, before breaking out my main tester.

Gonna be ordering one of those, the capacitance function would be really useful for me. The buzzing function would be helpful as some of the equipment I work around is so noisy you need ear defenders on when its running. Been using a Steinel tester but their obsolete now.
Yes it can, but a multimeter or multi function tester would not be allowed on a competent person's assessment as it has to be physically switched on, set to the right function (and maybe also scale) and it requires batteries to function. A voltage indicator will provide indication without batteries, without a power switch and without settings selection so there's no chance of a mis-indication through incorrect configuration. You can still carry a multimeter for additional functions, but to pass the CPS assessment, you'd need something like this.
But the burning question is, does it come with a padded case ? Another quality informative and amusing video (no really 😁) Perhaps you should do a joint trades video with PBPlumber aka Plumb & Plumber - it would probably end up like a Marx Brothers movie 🤣🤣
I think I paid about a ton for my 845 model which does less. There are far cheaper ones out there with fewer features. I guess you have to weigh up what it does for the money and decide if you're going to get the value back through having an easier working day!
An extra fifty notes for the new boy then. For that you get capacitance to 2000uF, resistance up from 1999 Ohm to 999kOhm, replaceable probes, flat-battery voltage indication operation, RCD trip operation, electric field sensing, spring-loaded GS38 ends, better battery testing and a larger, more informative LCD display. That's what you're weighing up for the extra, and it might be enough to sway, or not. If I was in the market for a voltage indicator and I didn't already have something that could do capacitance, then that alone would likely swing it for me. I find it's very rarely needed, but when it is needed, it's nice to have it on a tool already residing in the box. It's always right to shop around and compare pricing and features to work out what's best for you though.
Looks like a good bit of kit, it’s a shame the snobbery on industrial sites stops me using it. If I’m charging commercial rates clients expect to see Fluke.
James Osborne I agree it’s stupid, so long as a piece of test equipment it made to a recognised standard and is of sufficient quality. Test equipment CAT ratings are a lot more significant in heavy industrial applications where you are much more likely inadvertently encounter high voltages. Developing a piece of test equipment is an expensive business and this is often where corners are cut. In my experience in about 25% of cases as a service engineer attending a breakdown you’ll have some clown looking over your shoulder who hasn’t the foggiest. You’re probably being charged out by some big multi national for £1500/day to look a some relic that have no records/information on. At least if you turn up with a shiny tool kit the goon over your shoulder recognises some brands in you don’t have the idiot questioning your test equipment etc.

I have an older tis model and can confirm they changed to a vibrating alert as the earlier ones make the nastiest noise of any test equipment ever.
Often using my tester in noisy workshops with equippent running that buzzer is very useful.
For me the capacitance checking alone is worth it but the buzzer is the iceing on the cake.
It does take a few seconds for the ol' vibrator to kick in, although LED indication is immediate. Not sure why that is.

I think I paid about a ton for my 845 model which does less. There are far cheaper ones out there with fewer features. I guess you have to weigh up what it does for the money and decide if you're going to get the value back through having an easier working day!

An extra fifty notes for the new boy then. For that you get capacitance to 2000uF, resistance up from 1999 Ohm to 999kOhm, replaceable probes, flat-battery voltage indication operation, RCD trip operation, electric field sensing, spring-loaded GS38 ends, better battery testing and a larger, more informative LCD display. That's what you're weighing up for the extra, and it might be enough to sway, or not. If I was in the market for a voltage indicator and I didn't already have something that could do capacitance, then that alone would likely swing it for me. I find it's very rarely needed, but when it is needed, it's nice to have it on a tool already residing in the box. It's always right to shop around and compare pricing and features to work out what's best for you though.

Looks like a good bit of kit, it’s a shame the snobbery on industrial sites stops me using it. If I’m charging commercial rates clients expect to see Fluke.
What ? - I wouldn’t let my clients dictate what type of Testing Equipment that I choose to use , it’s my choice not theirs.
James Osborne I agree it’s stupid, so long as a piece of test equipment it made to a recognised standard and is of sufficient quality.
Test equipment CAT ratings are a lot more significant in heavy industrial applications where you are much more likely inadvertently encounter high voltages. Developing a piece of test equipment is an expensive business and this is often where corners are cut.
In my experience in about 25% of cases as a service engineer attending a breakdown you’ll have some clown looking over your shoulder who hasn’t the foggiest. You’re probably being charged out by some big multi national for £1500/day to look a some relic that have no records/information on. At least if you turn up with a shiny tool kit the goon over your shoulder recognises some brands in you don’t have the idiot questioning your test equipment etc.
