History of the Bay: Woodie
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Coming from the small East Bay town of Antioch, Woodie launched East Co-Co Records and a successful independent rap career. Although his music is sometimes overshadowed by his gang affiliation, Woodie was well-respected as a rapper, producer, and hustler who put his friends on and launched several careers. Best known for the "Northern Expozure" compilation series, he managed to use music as a way to escape the gang life that had brought down so many of his close friends. Tragically, Woodie died in 2007 under mysterious circumstances but his legacy lives on. This video breaks down the life and career of the Bay Area underground legend.

I’m 42 yrs old from NY and always been a hip hop head but every now and then I stumble upon artist online from somewhere random I know nothing about and that was Woodie today. And now I’m streaming all his stuff. Def a legend. RIP to him.
Listen to what you know about me woodie
Hung up the gloves in 2003 but i will never stop slapping Woodies music.
Im from Germany, woodie catched me by lyric and Sound around 2000. I still hear his Music, and collected much of him and East Co Co.
Much respect to Ryan Mitchell Wood ~ rest in heaven ~ and the whole 925.
You a German norteno?

Bro! Living in Antioch when woodie dropped yoc influenced. Thats sh!t had everybody screaming Norte. He was yelling out YOC LIFE. Representing all of us , The whole city. It was lit.
Some of the best times. RIP To the an antioch legend. Woodie
Rest in piss
I'm in Texas and I just learned about Woodie this year from the Killer Chronicles episode on him. Been jamming his music since then, wish I would have known sooner
Crazy right !? He made all this beats in all his albums ! Straight up self made , do it yourself underground rap !!!!
Yup he made his own beats and started his own record label, created collaboration albums (Northern Expozure) and he put a lot of people on. Big Tone is still doing his thing, and Woodie was the one that gave em his start.
never to late.
“If I Wasn’t” is one of his dopest songs he’s dropped. Bro has classics. RIP Woodie Wood.
The beginning of that song if I wasn't I always thought that it was recorded when they were shooting a scrap but idk
@@davidgarcia-ey1me 🤣🤣🤣 hahaha yeah when I was younger I thought that too. But I doubt it. That’ll be too difficult to record that and self snitching.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 damn man I really thought they recorded it lol 😂😂 it makes me happy to see Northernerz knock em scrapaz out woodie is my Tupac honestly I think he was a lil more hood
@@davidgarcia-ey1me 😂😂😂 that’ll be crazy! yeah I feel you. He was dope asf, really was with the shit.
@@ruega hell yeah young and reckless is my top n his flow he gots with nemfo shit he really tearz them barz up can't stop won't stop I want a woodie Tshirt but they ain't got one for bear size lol naw 5xl
Hip hop is not a favorite genre of mine but Woodie's music and his approach to it caught my appreciation. His first EP, Yoc Influenced, doesn't even sound like hip-hop. His beats in that album sound like 1980's alternative music: synth pop and new wave (Depeche Mode, New Order). Much respect to him, the legacy he left behind, and all the musicians he inspired.
He grew up listening to that stuff actually. There's a picture of him when he was young with a Madonna poster in the background.
Think bananarama….karate kid
It’s that Bay Area sound, sounds like other worldly
Yup synthwave! Unique sound
I'm 36 & Grew Up to Woodie & Northern Exposure!!.. I Respect This Documentary & How You Spoke. Being a Mexican from East San Jose, Woodie Helped Me Get Through Some Hard Lonely Times as a Teen!!.. His Music Top Notch!!.. I used to Call Him Eminem in the Hood!!.. Gotten Drunk to His Music Since I Can Remember!!.. No Joke. RIP To One of the Realest there Ever Was!!.. Woodie Wood. ✌️

Glad you talked about Woody. Tragic story. Really was big in the North Bay when I was going to highschool. Glad he got a longer video. Respect.

Really enjoying your content.
Woodie was a real 1... I don't bang but grew up around a Lotta folk that did. I found woodie through homies that lived in Antioch as a teen... songs like "tales of a killah" got me stuck... his stories like glue. To this day I still remember all his work. It's been almost 20 years
I know this was about Woodie but Shadow is such a dope emcee!
REST IN PEACE TO WOODIE THE LEGEND
Rest in piss 😂deceased norcaca...
He never will till his moms finish his final wish and drop that tape
@dylanbarnes9191 that might just be the cold truth.. No disrespect to his mom tho but yea he would've wanted all his unreleased shit dropped.

💯 bullshit! I lived around the corner from The Veramontes' and knew all these dudes. Hell I had a line of credit with woody at Live Oak. Carlos did what he did
Sounds stupid. He is the one that came back and started the standoff.
@@KnowOneNoWhere-86How he shoot himself two times in the head, one being in the back of the head?
Woodie I promise is the coldest rapper EVER!!!!!!!!!! MUCH LUV FROM TOLEDO OHIO
I remember when Woodie passed away, i was in high school. Sophomore. Im from Salinas. The cholos in my health class were playing his music on a mini speaker and talking about how he had just passed away. That’s when i kinda got introduced to his music. And then Mac Dre also passed away around that time.
Amazing, been waiting on a Woodie vid! Gotta get that Lil Los or XO Creep interview next!
Much respect for this video on the homie Woodie. 🙏🏽 #LLW
Woodie the man the myth his name is almost like a mythical charter everyone is always so interested in his story I swear they should make a movie about his life or a real good documentary. A lot of people are interested in woodie and not only gang bangers. And towards the end of his life he was touching really controversial subjects about the USA government and the patriot act having your rights taken from you as a us citizen. Which makes his death even more of a mystery ( rip Ryan “woodie” wood)
Yea and the information he was putting out probably is another reason why he was killed. Cus he was talking deep about the government
Word up, heard of Woodie but did not know his backstory. Thx for sharing Bay Hip Hop history once again.
That Cruel Summer flip will forever be a classic up here !🌉
Antioch is my hometown, Woodie was pretty big back in the 90's.
Pretty big you crazy that dude big timin

Woodie a real yay area legend dispute his gang affiliation u gotta love him wit out him we wouldn't have big tone acito Casper locc rico 2 smoove or GB he pave the way for the younger generation and always put on for his city and really just talk bout his life and what he was doing
Nah, Big tone was on his way but without Woodie we would not have B Dawg,Lil los,Lou E Lou and all the other East Co Co legendary artists !
@@AuntAlnico4 bruh legendary? More like classic..they were good but to hit legendary u gotta have albums n some projects..not just be on albums and 1 album..out of all of them woodie n shadow was the dopest ones..really shocked about shadow,he is a dope ass lyricist.
I been bumpin Woodie since day one....RIP OG Woodie...
Glad to see people talkin about this dude. I randomly came across him when I was 10 or 11 and someone online told me about him, dude had his own sound, his own wave. Super talented and it’s a shame more people don’t know about him

Good video. I learned something 💯🤟🏿😎
Damn right we’re the Bay Area. The East Bay Blood. Yoc Life 💯✊🏼
You were almost 💯% accurate. The only thing you were missed informed was Wood was not buried in the Yoc on 18th st. His mom had him cremated. She did not want him on 18th because she feared exactly what happened to his headstone. The headstone was a just a tribute to Wood assembled by Storm
I didn't it was a drive by at the VA either? I thought they walked in with a shotty and a revolver?
@@KnowOneNoWhere-86nah I think the drive by was what happened in pit which paralyzed and later killed Blackbirds brother, then the shotty n revolver walk up at the veterans hall quince that they say was blackbird and snoop (sounds like it was really woodie not snoop)
@@559austin5 💯 facts
I see you used some of my dvd footage @Dregs, right on brother. Woodie was my guy. Our Apt.3 "Known Associates 3: Homeboys and Killahoes" compilation was supposed to be put out by Wood and myself.
@666offering I bought your Apt. 3 Mobb Legacy awhile back. Very well done, some rare footage fsho. C fresh, Jacka, Cougnut and maaan, Wood was goin in on clear channel and the direction the industry was going. i take it your project Known Associates was never completed?
I put out 3 volumes of Known Associates, 2 were double discs.
@@666offering On your DVD, during Wood's interview he mentioned city hall records. They were Mac Dre's main distributor for all his Rompilation projects and the owner is walter zelnik. Do you know if Wood and Dre worked together on any features or collabs? I've been going back and really listening to Wood's lyrics, he was so on point shits damn near prophetic. I asked Mac Mall like ten years ago if Dre fucked with the Northerners which he obviously confirmed. A lot of the youth is just now realizing how raw Woodie was. Nigga really put Jacka on too.
@@123onajet one of Jacks first concerts was at one we threw. Woodie brought him.

Shout out to Dregs for always spotlighting the artists who made an impact on the Bay Area music scene. Woodie was a dope rapper, but I think his production skills were immaculate. I catch some of his unique sounds on mainstream music.
Idk if anyone else out there putting down history lessons on classic rap artists like you bro bro. Bless up, you a G for all Dat.
Thanks for making this doc. I had to give him listen, and bro, his style, word play, and skill is dope. 🔥
Bro this guy is a legend most definitely..
I looked at him as an artist before anything.. dude was just talented to the core..
I didn’t really have any big homies but once I started listening to Woodie and East co co they laced me up from what I can soak up and that’s just from music..
Shit kills me too Thinkin like dang why did he have to leave 😞.. ahead of his time I feel like.. especially on his political views and governments hidden agendas and shit like that.. once I was old enough my goals was to buy all his albums before they disappeared.. and I did that.. I was only in 7th grade when he passed..
Woodie dropped gems boii…
He needs the recognition.. and speedy loc (RIP)
Most pioneers are gone.. we only have a few left from this bay/northern cali music era..
I’m just a supporter and a fan.. never a banger but was around that energy and environment..
I think you made a good video here bro.. all your videos are good.. but how you understand that this is a touchy subject and to show the utmost love and respect to a legend and his legacy..
Much love dregs
Stay safe
Much love from the Utah beehive 801 state.
His beats are unlike anyone's. His writing, plus how he delivers it, his lingo and way of describing stories and scenarios is beyond anyone I've ever heard. He's beyond Shakespeare or any of the greats. I can't say enough about this prophet. His music is the only rap I listen to now. Him and B Dawg. I bought his first press of yoc influenced. His track the streets keep callin me is one of my fav track of all time.

One of my favorite rappers of all time.
i agree resepect his hustle. and i enjoyed that it was different. and i like the beats. my favs were " N -tha-bay" "this northern california" and "the clock is ticking" but there are so many good ones.
great video
Personally like a wax’s old rap style vs his new style but I still respect it
it was a different time in Antioch in the late 80's & 90's. i grew up around it. i respected it. but as a man pushing 50, looking back i don't want any of my grandchildren to think what i grew up around is normal. We all moved out but we still have the roots in 925.
The Antioch Police Department is hella crooked. Been for hella long
You for the jacka was on the compilations roo
Vatos locos forever. I like the pic frame homie
I'm sure someone else already commented but the shooting snoop was convicted of wasn't a quad homicide, only one person was killed and 4 others shot but survived so he was convicted of 1 count of murder and 4 counts attempted murder.
I'm from pittsburg and been slappin woodie since 2003 rip to a bay legend.
Blackbird is one of my fav songs from him
Man even if you could get bdawg on the podcast too!! Would be dope
Apparently Woodie never even heard A Wax rap when he brought him on to feature on the Northern Exposure compilation. He was a real one like that.
Rip wood blackbird n his daughters. Free snoop
4:21 Didn't one of Woodies friends rap about Woodie's Mom having a VHS tape of Woodie confessing to the murders that Snoop didn't do, but woodie himself who did it, and the Mom wouldn't release it?
Actual facts
@officialogtripleog listen to the song.
*A-Wack - East Co Co.*
He says it 20 seconds into the song
@officialogtripleog ah, ok
Even if there was a tape. I don’t think the tape exist anymore. It burned in the paradise fire. I’ve hear this some where.
Even if there was Allegedly a tape. Woodies mom could be charged for withholding confessions. Or some shit. Allegedly if they existed of course.

How did he get his name blackbird? Also why wasnt there a Vol 3 album? i want to know
Just recently I see a YT video where someone stated Woodie made a confession video before he passed to clear Snoop, if that's the case it's should be played in the media then given to the authorities to clear him. The reason I say put it out to the media is so they the authorities can't try to bury it!! Woodie was and is a legend and always to care of his!!
I really hate how things ended for all of them i haven't found a person yet who had something bad to say about him they say he is a legend
