    As many of you know, Back to the Future is my favorite movie of all time. I've been waiting 30 years to make this video!
    While Mattel still hasn't figured out "hover" tech, we are finally getting closer to having something resembling a flying car! How do you see flying taxicabs working out?

      Very nice video Dave. Just surprised you didn’t mention EHang which can do already everything Archer is only talking about. I am invested in ACIC because I am a trigger happy early investor (= a bit of a fool if you want) but I have to admit their latest “unveil” event was super lame, VTOL not even started in any form or shape, just a CGI simulation of the flight while EH is already autonomously flying 2x-3x longer distances in real world and people can actually watch their test flights. Fortunately it is a Chinese company so we’ll make sure to keep them in bay and my ACIC investment is “safe” for now ;-).

    It is 2022 and China has certified the first evtol, 100 planned routes in the Greater Bay (Shenzhen, HK) for a company that has already flown 12000 autonomous flights, half with people, in China, South Korea, and Austria. Unmanned in Japan and USA. Ehang. Beta Technologies in Vermont has been flying a prototype with a pilot with 250nm range having signed a deal with UPS and has the same charging architecture as Arrival - who UPS has also invested in... I wish Archer well, but they are well behind Ehang, Beta, and Lilium. China is the largest market for UAM market.

    What about Ehang?
    Unlike the Archer, the Ehang has built and utilized its products. It has contracts with the Chinese goverment and is viewed favourably by it. It would be exponentially easier to implement “everyday” air transport in China, when comparing to any other western country, which gives incredible edge for the frontrunners that start in China. Not to mention that the Ehang is actively looking for the expansion of the services and operations outside the mainland.

    • @HeythereDavehere
      @HeythereDavehere  3 роки тому

      I don’t see flying becoming mainstream until the data show it to be more safe than human-controlled vehicles. According to a quick Google search, there are 16,438 car crashes per day on average in the US. I couldn’t find a stat on how many miles are driven per day in the US, but i think that ratio needs to be “safer” for autonomous flying vehicles for people to feel confident in the tech.
      According to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey (NMVCCS) conducted from 2005 to 2007 with the aim of identifying the crucial factors that lead to motor vehicle crashes, fewer than 10% of accidents are caused by vehicle defects, the environment, or unknown reasons. In other words, more than 90% of all motor vehicle crash deaths stem from user error.

    As a pilot myself, the idea of no pilot onboard to complete the preflight inspections, deal with the occasional freak acts of nature that is weather, and immediately develop a plan in the case of electrical failure or similar urgent emergency (mechanical, medical, or especially a combination of the two), etc... would terrify me. In the perfect scenarios in which these test flights are occurring, everything sounds great. However, its when the adverse conditions occur that my faith in this autonomous tech severely plummets.

    • @HeythereDavehere
      @HeythereDavehere  3 роки тому +1

      Great hearing your thoughts. The idea of autonomous cars kinda freaks me out too, but if the data shows pilotless air vehicles to have less risk of crash or failure than a manually driven car, I’d be good with it. There was a time in the early day of automobiles that you pretty much needed to be a mechanic to drive a car.

    • @HeythereDavehere
      @HeythereDavehere  3 роки тому

    • @kubismatik2
      @kubismatik2 3 роки тому

      I assume there will be much less space for human errors as flying VTOL is way less complex process compared to an airplane or helicopter both needing a very specific conditions for successful take of, landing and to stay in the air. Here you don’t really need a pilot at all and all commercially developed VTOLs are designed to land safely automatically whenever the power or any single propeller is lost. I guess the whole plane parachute sometimes used with ultralights can’t be used here.

    In zero of all these videos on the promise of flying cars do they ever address weather issues, bird hits, wind shear, and catastrophic mechanical failure mishaps while in the air. I owned a car once that shut off while I was driving down the highway. Completely shut down! Even the power steering was out. Turned out a vital electrical cable was placed too close the the manifold and burned through. So they fixed it? Nope it happened again and for the same reason. So flying in the air a individually owned vehicle must have redundant backups for such a disaster.
