Honoring 40-Year Employee - Mike Boock
Wahpeton, North Dakota, Dec 1st, 2012
On December 1st, 1972, Mr. Mike Boock accepted a new job offer. Forty years later at the 2012 WCCO Belting Holiday Social in Wahpeton, which was held on the same date Boock originally started working with the Shorma family businesses, he received a special thank you for his decades of dedication and hard work from the Shorma family... a fully-restored 1972 Corvette.
All of the employees attending the party, including Boock who is the current Shipping and Receiving Manager of Shorma-owned WCCO Belting in Wahpeton, were led to believe that a small program and comical "roast" were the special events of the evening. Yet WCCO President Thomas Shorma (speaker on video), whose father started the business in 1954, had a surprise in store. As the program was concluding, he gave Boock one last gift box to open in front of over two hundred family, friends, and coworkers. The anticipation in the room quickly thickened as Boock, with a look of question on his face, pulled out a small model car and car key. At that moment, two other Shorma siblings in attendance opened the back doors of the Wahpeton Eagles Club, a rumbling engine was heard, and driven into the room was a fully-restored 1972 Corvette that matched the model and key in Boock's hand.
This will not be the end of the story for WCCO's now infamous employee recognition. WCCO has numerous employees who have chosen to make WCCO their career, and many have spent over twenty and thirty years working with Shorma businesses. As President Tom Shorma said, "If someone is willing to dedicate forty years of his or her life to our family business, this is the least we can do."

Most companies try to find a way to get rid of 40 year employees because a new employee is cheaper. This act speaks volumes about the owners, and it's rare.

A lot of smaller companies have someone waiting in line ( within 9 months of hiring you) to take your job for a lower wage & less benefits.
They're just waiting for an excuse to get rid of you.

Being a leader is not the same as being a manager or being "in charge". Mike is a leader and a good team member. His employer understands that nobody wants to feel unappreciated and everyone wants to be on a winning team. They appear to place great emphasis on communication, which is vital in describing and maintaining a shared vision and goal to work toward. I would like to work for an organization with such accurate insight.

She's been running his company for many years and is still doing it.

So I'm 22 years old and I've been at my company for about three years now. This made me cry. The look on his face was just beautiful.
Just because my manager was gone for a couple weeks due to family emergency. So I was tasked with all the work that he normally does on my own. On Thursday the company owner walks up to as I'm grabbing the product to ship out and gives me a hug and tells me how much of a hard worker I am and appreciates me and gave me a raise. (It's not even review time) I cried honestly. I have never felt so appreciated by any boss. This just goes to show if you are worth your salt pay a good man or woman will stand by you. Anyways Mike I hope to be like you and take a step back and see what I've helped build.

Totally outstanding to see another company like this during ones retirement. I am retiring in two days after long years of retirement and was also like Mike being "on top of the world" with the outcome of a key , title, and new registration number sticker in a envelope to my new boat. My boss has blown me away and I love his family to death. Though retiring in 2 days, he will always have me if ever needed to fill in temporarily. I certainly enjoyed this video and I hope that almost 4 years later Mike is still driving the Vette.
And kudos to WCCO Belting for showing your 40 year employee and the world that you care about your people.
    Most excellent.
Congratulations to Mike Boock. 40 years of employment is truly inspiring.

Mike is still driving his car! In the North Dakota summer months at least :) He'll be celebrating 45 years with us in December.

It’s good to see there’s a company out there that realizes without good employees they wouldn’t have a company
