Horses, Donkeys, Mules & Camels! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide S3 ▫ Tutorial Let's Play [Ep.27]

- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20!
This tutorial will introduce you to the rideable mobs of the Overworld - Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Camels... and pigs!
First we look at horses, and their three main stats of health, jump height, and movement speed. We compare two horses' stats and breed them to get a third horse. Horse breeding was updated in Minecraft 1.20, so we should see better results from breeding better horses!
We then move on to introduce Donkeys and Mules, looking at their differences and Mules' capacity to carry storage chests. Next, we head to a desert to breed and ride the new Camel mob, looking at how its movement differs to a standard horse!
Finally, we return to my starter house to enjoy the legacy feature of riding a saddled pig using a carrot on a stick.
Along the way we also collect our first cactus and green dye, remind ourselves of the importance of desert temple loot, and discover why it's a bad idea to take a camel to the Nether.

A small correction - Donkeys can be equipped with chests as well
Yes. And mules are not really that much of an improvement over donkeys, because while it may be faster, jumpier and/or more durable, it's not by much. The real advantage of donkeys is the ability to attach chests to them, which is a great way to make portable inventory. Mules have the same advantage, while also looking kinda like a horse (it has a body of a donkey, but a texture of a horse). Donkeys and mules will always have 3 rows and 6 columns of inventory space (3x6) when equipped with chests, as opposed to llamas, which can also be equipped with chests, but cannot be riden (I mean, you can jump on it, but can't control it), but it is essentially a walking inventory extension. The reason why I say as opposed to llamas is because that's a random trait actually. You can get anywhere between 2 to 5 columns of inventory space, rarely you could get full 6 column space (always 3 rows), so the inventory can be between 3x2 and 3x6. You won't however find a llama that has full inventory space, that's only a rare chance while breeding. You can breed two llamas together and the resulting inventory space will be mostly the average between mommy and daddy. But there is a chance that the result will be slightly higher than the average, which means you can farm them and make as much 6 columned llamas as you want. The biggest advantage to llamas is that you can lead one and every other llama in the vicinity that has been tamed will follow the one that is led, which in theory may create a long carousel of walking inventory. I'm not sure if there is a finite number of llamas that will follow you, but I guess you'd pretty much bet on simulation distance taking a huge role in this (simulation distance in conjunction of render distance). If you crank it up very high (make sure it doesn't overcook your GPU while doing, so you get playable FPS), the carousel could be as long as 20 llamas in line, which if each llama has maxed out inventory space, would make it 20x3x6, which is 360 item slots, plus the 27+9=36 item slots in the player's inventory, which is 396 item slots. That's a lot. Now imagine that you fill each item slot with a shulker box, which has 27 item slots. That's 360x27, whopping 9,720 item slots! Theoretically. You'll never need that much items space for a mobile inventory, ever! :D Of course the trade off is the speed of travel, so as much as it sounds like a very useful amount of space, you'll be moving hell slowly, which makes it not that much useful anymore.
@@CZghost I did happen to use a donkey quite a bit during my various playthroughs, and during one,.I remembered about the mule mechanic. Once I tested them, the difference was night and day, and it even somewhat matched the horse I used to breed it with in terms of speed. I feel like mules are a - surprise - in-between form of a donkey and a horse. Can carry stuff and is way more mobile than a donkey
@@CZghost Small mistake in what you said: The inventory size of a Donkey/Mule, as well as the max inventory size of a Llama, is 15, not 18.
@@CZghost Llamas can only Caravan up to 10 in one line.
I was looking for this comment, thanks!
I love the new horse breeding mechanics! I spent three hours and I managed to get a horse that had a 14.18 speed and a 4.56 jump height (stats gotten from minihud.) This was literally impossible before the breeding update
Hey Pix, note on Donkeys and Camels:
Donkeys can be chested; the advantage of a Mule is that Mules can jump higher. You can get a faster mule/donkey by breeding but their base jump height is locked, if I remember correctly.
Camels can sprint, and will do so indefinitely as long as they don't get stopped or damaged. It's separate from the Dash, as you just tap your Sprint key and off they go.
"Horse people, let me know" is such a dangerous statement on the internet!
Glad to have you back, Pix!
True words! Horse people in mine and my wife's family. Watch yourself, Pix.
Welcome back! So excited for survival guide!
(Also donkeys can be equipped with chests.)
How? I tried this and wasn’t successful
@@Cornpop223hold shift and press right click on the donkey
Has to be a newly crafted chest. Won't work with a chest that's been previously placed and picked up again for some reason.
As a horse person, yes that is the shoulders + never rode a horse in minecraft 😮. Welcome back 😊
Welcome back Pix! Glad your PC is fixed!
All good
Im glad to know there are some fellow horse people here.
Carrot on a stick was added in 1.4 so before that you could ride pig but not controle it, only reason to ride a pig was to get when pigs fly achievement.
Minor corrections:
1. The new system does not *bias positive*; it fails to *bias neutral* and most horses are quickly better than neutral. If you start with a particularly *bad* pair of horses, the foals will be worse. I think wild donkeys might count there; I forget.
2. Donkeys can carry chests.
I love how even though I've been playing this game for over a decade, I'm still learning things. For example, I never knew about carrots on a stick used to get the pig to go faster (and taking damage as a result).
Welcome back!! So great to see you again, and I love the pig inclusion at the end! I'd never heard of horses growing up in multiple stages before, and that didn't actually seem to be demonstrated in this video from what I could see, with the foal both when it first spawned and shortly before it grew up being just shorter than its parents' bodies and its body just shorter than a fence post, at least I think that's what it looked like. (I think the mule is just smaller anyway.) So, I just now googled Minecraft horse growth stages and it sounds (from the Fandom wiki) like that is actually a thing, but only on Bedrock edition?
The newborn foal was significantly smaller than the pre-adult which was smaller than the adult.
A) yes that's the shoulder! It's usually where you measure the horse's height, too.
B) while both a called mule generally, the offspring of a horse and a donkey is called a Mule or a Hinny depending on which animal was the father and mother. The German names of this translate as "mouth/mule donkey" and "mouth/mule animal"
Yes! Thank you for this. I love random facts
Welcome back! I wondered if you were going to explain how to make the horse jump, but later you kind of did when you talked about making a camel dash.
For those wondering, hold the space bar down and you'll see the jump bar filling up. Release the space bar to jump. Try to release just as the bar gets to max filled for the highest jump. BTW I would always (at least before chest boats!) get a saddle and donkey early on for the extra inventory. I always name my first donkey "Burrito".
I've been learning Spanish for a few years now, and it wasn't until I read your comment that I realized the association. *Sound of my palm slapping my forhead! So then I went on a deep dive on why soft tortilla wraps are called little donkeys. I'm back now, still not quite sure, but I do know I won't look at burritos or donkeys the same again.
Adding "gold horse armor is actually better than iron horse armor" to the "things the Survival Guide taught me that I didn't already know as an experienced player" collection
Glad to have you back.
I have two additions:
You kinda missed the skeletton horses, though I get they are a special case.
Horses/mules/donkeys are wider then one block so they wont fit trough a single fence gate or door. I guess that is true for camels, too but I have to claim one yet.
Btw. sand is technically renewable, because you can buy it from the wandering trader how useful that may be
It is not common to come across skeleton horses as they can only be spawned from a horse being struck by lightning, so I see why he did not introduce them
@@easternv1lle Skeleton horses spawn naturally as skeleton trap horses during thunderstorms. No need to struck horses with lightning. ;) I was sure Pixel would pick up that topic when he encounters it I was just surprised he didn't even mention that this horse variant exists.
@@christianhohenstein1422 yeah I know lol, but maybe if he finds one, he may make a video about it
Yes, the chainmail bits on iron horse armor is on the shoulders. I very much appreciate that you asked! 😁👏
2:50 2x3? Such luxury!
Camels are so cute. I love their smiles
I had no idea foals get larger! I love finding the rare things I don’t know about MC 😂
You can find horse speedometer builds online that work with a line of cobwebs and a redstone timer to count down how long it takes to run through them. But for me, I use minihud.
Correction: you can craft a carrot on a stick even when the fishing rod is damaged. And when the carrot on stick breaks, you get back a repaired fishing rod!
When a tool is a crafting ingredient, your recipe book only has the recipe for when the ingredient tool is fresh. But you can still craft the item by putting the ingredients in the grid yourself. This can save you a lot of work crafting dispensers out of damaged bows. I have a dispenser-crafting station at my mob farm so I can take busted skeleton bows and make dispensers on the spot.
good to have you back!
Welcome back. Really missed your videos. Always learn something new.
Welcome back pix! Very happy to have guide videos back
We all sat in a twitch stream while pix is searching seeds for this episode. He said "I don't know i am simply running it" saw the cherry grove and here we are!
Glad to have you back, Pix!!
We're back! I missed these videos. Congrats on getting your computer working again🥳🥳🥳
Wow, I spend like, 2 days breeding horses and donkies while wondering when you'll return, and today you not only return, but with a video on horse breeding!? Wow. (Horses are now super fast. Thanks to the Jade mod, I know that my best horses can go 14 blocks a second. And can jump about 3 blocks)
Wake up babe, after a long time, a new survival guide episode just dropped.
29:19 "I hope you haven't missed me too much" but we did miss you 🙁
I took a baby camel back to my base by boat. It's totally doable. It didn't grow whilst in the boat, so I don't know what would happen in that case.
Nice to see you back, Pix!
Are you on bedrock?
@@peartreeLeaving no, Java. I think I was on 1.20
Yay! You're back! :)
"some other, horse like animals" [zooms in menacingly on a horse]
Yay!!! Pix is back! Always love survival guide vids
So glad you’re back!!! ❤
Welcome back Pixlriffs!!!!!
Glad to have you back! ^^
welcome back!
The Return of the King
All is right in the world when we get an early morning Pix upload. Good to have you back!
Glad you have the computer working again. great episode. thx for the education.
its lovely seeing you back! im exited to see more survival guide videos throughout the year
WELCOME BACK PIX!!!!!!
Welcome back
Welcome back! Glad the PC is performing well and I'm very glad you can get back to playing and sharing this world with us! ❤
Great to see you take up the cowboy lifestyle!
Sadly, you cannot put horses into a boat to make the taming process easier like with Lamas. But at least they reliably follow you on a lead when you are in a boat on Java.
Nice to have you back 🎉
Welcome back Pix!!
I like the mules for hauling stuff. And even riding. I'll have to do some horses and mules for sure. Thanks Pixl!
I’ve actually started playing survival minecraft java edition for the first time since the last episode so I’m enjoying the series even more!
Welcome back PIX!
Glad you’re back
Welcome back online sir
17:06 I believe that you can actually also smelt sea pickles to get green dye, although that may just be a bedrock feature. Anyhow it’s rare that I find a mistake in a Pixlriffs video given how informed you are. Cheers!
Welcome back mr.riffs
WE MISSED YOU 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Hey Pixl, Great to see you are back and thanks so much for the eps. love to see you piggy-back ride the Piggy. till next time Cheers
Mods like "Jade" show you the info about the block or entity you are looking at. With it, exact HP, speed & jump height for horses can be seen
Horse person here! Those ARE his shoulders, but on a horse they're called his "withers." Horse people have weird names for everything.
I think three cheers for the computer repair shop are in order. Hip-hip...
ibx toycat actually invented a machine that can measure a horse's speed using redstone. He made it in bedrock, but it works in Java too.
No, YOU welcome back!
I'm so happy you're back!! I've missed your videos a lot ❤
He's baaaaack!
Welcome back pix 🎉
He's back baby!
Welcome back!! :) I kinda stopped playing in my solo world because my sister, a couple friends and I have started playing together on our old server again and that's a lot of fun. But I also still love my solo world, and now that your survival guide videos are back, I'll definitely continue playing along in there again too! I'm excited for the new episodes! :D
(oh boy, between playing on my world and on the server, I pretty much won't be doing anything but playing Minecraft in my free time anytime soon but it's fiiine xD)
Sugar from sugarcane can make the horses grow faster :)
He's back 😀
Also an small correction: Sand is in MC renevable. For example with an end portal sand farm or the wandering trader.
18:52
Welcome back, you could habe just brought 2 baby camels
FINALLY!!! Another ep... LET'S GO!!
Welcome Back!
welcome back!!!
For April Fools, Mojang should create pig armor. With trims.
18:51 Well you can get sand from killing Husks, so building a mob farm in the desert can solve that problem!
Husks do not naturally drop sand. If this happens in your world or on a server, you’re dealing with modified loot tables.
The only time I’ve ever seen this happen is in skyblock, where the loot table was modified to make sand farmable when there’s no terrain to explore.
if being ungainly and awkward exempts entities from getting into a drivable vehicle someone forgot to tell elder guardians cause they be cramming into mine carts anyway lol
When the world needed him most, his pc returned!
Yaaaayyyy your back!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Camels are my favorite animal 🐪 😊
Welcome back Pix! are you gonna cover llamas at some point?
I put a baby camel on leash and led it through my my nether portal and closed walkway to my portal to overworld house 😊
This was very informative I didn't know you could breed trates in donkeys but you forgot about striders, you can ride them too with the help of a saddle and warped fungus on a stick, they can't have chests but will help you get over lava in the neather 😊
He didn’t forget - he mentioned at 14:55
@@AdamNisbettprob didn’t even watch the full vid
He didn’t forget…he mentioned there’s one nether mob he’ll talk about later, just doing over-world rideable stuff today.
I probably missed it , I watch these with my 9 year old and often find i've miss bits when I get time to rewatch on my own, glad they weren't missed I like striders 🙂 thank you both for saying 😊

Hot tip: Don't let Goodtimeswithscar near your horses.
Missed your face so much. Hope you enjoyed your impromptu vacation. Glad you are back with awesome videos. Any idea when you might get a Last Life episode out? I know you are going to be busy catching up on the Survival Guide. 💜💜💜💜
Pix is back 😊
As others have pointed-out, donkeys can be equipped with chests, but they move slower than mules.
‼️UNPOPULAR OPINION ‼️
They need to upgrade Donkeys. Real life Donkeys are excellent guard animals. They protect the livestock from wolves and foxes as they're a threat to our in-game livestock as well. Donkeys should be able to kick or bite predators.
One mistake in what you said, although it might not be relevant to most people.
About the old horse breeding system: you said it had a tendency to make the baby horses weaker than the parents. It actually had a tendency to make them more average.
Yes stronger horses had a tendency to give birth to weaker babies,
but weaker horses had a tendency to have stronger ones.
This is irrelevant to anyone playing the current version, but for anyone playing an older one,
while the best option is generally to give up on breeding and just tame new horses until you get a good one,
if for some reason someone can only find 2 really crappy horses and desperately wants to upgrade to an average one, breeding them might be the way to go.
Wonderful as usual Pix!
Very cool video. You forgot the coolest horse though, the skeleton horse
Also, the strider!
I don't know if you knew Pix, but sand/red sand is a bit renewable through the wandering trader with coral blocks being the same.
Omg yes you are back. I got a beacon and a little village in my follow along world. Mmissed you.
good morning and glad to see you again :)
Wow, I never knew gold horse armour was stronger than iron, or considered that it doesn't have durability in the first place.
NEW EPISODE!!!
can you do a video discussing village reputation? I think it would be a good Idea to go over it.
