  • A revelation of the darker side to Walt Disney's character looking at his racist, anti-Semitic, misogynist tendencies which finally led to a pathological hatred of communists and an active particpation in McCarthy's House Committee on Un-American Activities.

He brought that strike on himself, if he had shown respect to his workers and treated them well it never would have come to that.

Walt reportedly didn't like Donald Duck but "Uncle Walt",especially as he got older, certainly shared some of the cantankerous duck's personality traits.

    Thank you!
    This does indeed seem odd.
Why does it seem like only 3 people were really interviewed for a long time?
What about some of the people who worked close with him?
And what about the people who didn't strike?
What about the people who went against the flow?
Why wouldn't they interview those people longer?

This is so innacurate. Implying the strikers came back and joined dumbo and finished without Walt is bs. And somehow skewing it as though the backgrounds in dumbo are anywhere near as good as pinnochios is ludacris.

And parents were always complaining about cartoon characters from other companies being way too violent and racist for children to watch.

This does not seem to be a balanced portrayal of Walt Disney at all. This seems to me to be a bunch of disgruntled workers attacking a dead man who can't defend himself.

This probably would never have happened had it not been for World War II. That was the main reason why "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" did not quite turn a profit on initial release. Because the war had obliterated a good portion of the European market, which helped drive the successes of Mickey Mouse and "Snow White".

The strikers had support from Chuck Jones and the other Warner Bros. crowd, who volunteered their cars and sent supplies.

@GyvonJ I am not excusing the man.
The idea alone that skin color could ever affect your level of comfort, is hillarious.
Same as assuming "nazi' whenever you spot someone with a shaved head, wearing army slacks . But that we can change now. Because it is happening now.
People can take advantage of people in all sorts of ways. not just laboral, color or gender based.
Just having people firmly decide to no longer take advantage of people, is a great beginning.

Walt Disney treated his employees better than any other studio head in Hollywood at the time. Walt was a saint compared to the other studio heads.

And all of this is unthinkable,
To anyone whose idea of succes involves themselves as royalty in the glory of their self-made empire.
And none of this is a direct attack on Disney because he represents the past (a time when they didn't know nay better). But none of these theories involve hiring the mob to rough you up a notch and pop some "sense" in your head, when you disagree with the top cat.

    02:44 COMMUNISM
A social, political and economic movement that aims at the establishment of a classless and stateless communist society structured upon common ownership of the means of production. This ideology significantly influenced the history of the 20th century, which saw intense rivalry between:
    - The "socialist world" (communist states);
    - And the "capitalist world" (countries with market economies and democratic forms of government).

03:22 THE MARXIST THEORY OF COMMUNISM
In Marxist theory, communism is a specific stage of historical development that inevitably emerges from the development of the productive forces that leads to a superabundance of material wealth, allowing for distribution based on need and social relations based on freely associated individuals. Marxist theory contends that socialism is just a transitional stage on the road to communism.

03:49 THE LENINIST THEORY OF COMMUNISM
Leninists revised this theory by introducing the notion of a vanguard party to lead the proletarian revolution and to hold all political power after the revolution, "in the name of the workers" and with worker participation, in a transitional stage between capitalism and socialism.

I don't think Disney was evil the way he handled the strike, mostly naive.
The animators at the top were his friends, they understood how much he wanted to make these movies and they were willing to sacrifice time and money to get them done and Disney naively assumed he had the same understanding from everyone in his company.

Jesus christ, Disney was no more racist than any other person at the time. Just freaking deal with it and move on. Also, for those of you criticizing Disney for being a self-promoter, the main reason why you get into entertainment is to make money. Otherwise, why do it? Bunch of hippies...

"Disney was no more racist than any other person at the time." Good, then You agree, Disney WAS a racist. The difference is between Disney's racism and the common racism of the day was that Disney could use his media empire to spread his racist ideas.
