It really seems like a worthy project for a heavy investor(s) to reignite the program to get it certified, making whatever changes and improvements to do so. I don’t think whatever problems it may have had were unsolvable. Fantastic looking airplane.
Negative! SeaWind did not bankrupt... not according to Wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seawind_International_Seawind The company simply died after its founder Richard Silva died at age 82.
There are lots of reasons for an seaplane company to go out of business before it gets to production. Sometimes, its just not a great plane - like maybe the water landing speeds are way too high and water handling behaviors too bad for even experienced seaplane pilots. Sometimes the ownership has ego problems- like suing partners and everyone associated with the original plane. Sometimes, the quality of the builds are so bad that reasonable investors won’t touch it. Sometimes, all of the above… Renaming it from Seawind to Seawind 3000 didn’t make the stink go way.
Hi all! I served as test pilot on the pre-production Seawind prototype during its developmental test flying in Ottawa, Canada. The airplane was indeed innovative, but making the design compliant with the regulatory requirements for a Part 23 light airplane was daunting. The prototype exhibited some challenging handling qualities, particularly regarding the stall and spin-resistance requirements. Numerous modifications were incorporated to attempt to tame its quirks. The certification effort became increasingly complex and expensive. Around the time that Transport Canada recommended a stick-pusher in lieu of taming the natural stall, it became evident that a certified solution was not affordable. Despite the optimistic name of the video, there IS NO certified Seawind. As an experimental, the Seawind could be perfect choice for some pilots, but I recommend flying it before purchase to ensure that pilot and airplane are compatible.

A Searey (not seawind) circumnavigated the planet about 2014. Its the only single engine seaplane to do so ever. Single vfr pilot, no autopilot. The southern sun. Every seawind I have ever seen was a hangar queen and almost never saw water landings.

A standard kit was $59,900 USD in 1999. A Kwick Kit cost an extra $14,500 USD. SNA estimated that it would cost $40,000-65,000 USD for the necessary components not included with the kit. A fully assembled Seawind kit with instruments typically cost over $200,000 USD.

Very dangerous. High thrust line creates all kinds of pitch/stall problems.
Possibly , but on many other factors it's a ideal solution. Having the prop , in clear air is a major advantage for vibration reduction. Other designs the prop is chopping at high and low pressure air at the back of the wing where half the prop over the wing and half the prop disc under the wing. By having the prop further back means , can extend the useful space inside the cabin too. Having that high energy prop wash over the rudder and elevator must be great for control at low speeds.
Also might be less likely to stall , with the prop creating a suction behind the wing perhaps keeping air flowing.
