Today I’m Zooming with a veterinarian in Boca Raton, FL, Dr. Boaz Man, who is using a groundbreaking CO2 laser procedure to dramatically improve the health and quality of life of French Bulldogs and other “extreme” flat-faced breeds.
Dr. Man is a general practice veterinarian, not a board certified veterinary surgeon, but he has taken it upon himself to learn the skills and techniques necessary to perform this successful life-saving surgery on dogs with a compromised quality of life who struggle simply to breathe.
The CO2 laser procedure is done on an outpatient basis, is minimally invasive, produces minimal bleeding, and no stitches or “cone of shame” are required; the laser is used to open the nostrils and remove excess tissue from the nose and windpipe
Dr. Man is hopeful that many more veterinarians will learn the technique, because French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds are hugely popular in the U.S., and many of them are in very poor health.
Ultimately, the onus is on breeders and owners/prospective owners of flat-faced dogs to act responsibly and ethically to dramatically improve breeding practices with the goal of returning these deserving dogs to good health and a good quality of life.

I had my pugs nostrils done when he was 7 months old and the cost was around $500 for the cold laser. It healed quick and he was his usual bouncy self afterwards. Had his soft palate done at 3 years. The cost was $920. Much cheaper than the twenty-five hundred to $5,000 quotes I was getting for traditional cut & stitch. He went home the same night and had absolutely no issues. Both procedures made a dramatic improvement in his breathing.
I got my first two frenchies in 2008. One had his nostrils and soft palate done and it was a horrendously painful and long recovery process for my boy. It hurt me beyond measure seeing him suffer before during and after with healing. But omg the difference. That was 14 years ago. Now?? There is no excuse everyone please with a flat faced suffering dog PLEASE get this done. These animals suffer so much and with this trendy popularity is really a conundrum. Responsible breeders - responsible owners - responsible vets. Please get this info out. That cost over 1500 here in Canada way back when. Vets should release numbers on how many of these breeds have been treated for breathing issues. Breeders are in denial.
I have 2 sibling French bulldog/ micro American dogs who had respiratory difficulties early on in their lives- brachycephalic syndrome. We found a surgeon 8 hours away in Colorado Springs, Co and had surgery done on both of my frenchies. Game changer. My son has the sibling brother and I have been trying to get him to consider this surgery. He is still considering it. The problem is finding a surgeon that is experienced nearby.
Big drive time and it is costly. Thank goodness we had pet insurance. But so worth it.

My boston terrier had this surgery at a specialized surgery center. She now has to prop her head so that her neck hangs because it was botched. $5,000 for us to adjust her head all night for years

I saw a Vet in the UK do BOAS Surgery using Laser two yrs ago , and the biggest plus they saw was no stitches, reduced ti swelling which is so important for the back of throat correction,
It seems to be the Norm in Battersby Dogs home too to use Laser instead of the Usual technique.
This would by my choice as I worry about throat swelling after Surgery
My pug's surgeon prefers ligasure over laser surgery for soft palate resection, yielding better post-op results, i.e. less scarring, less inflammation, faster recovery. Can you comment?

Okay but the biggest concern with laser vs scalpel is the scar tissue that can come after the procedure which can then worsen the condition. How do we know if this is any different?

My vet did the laser for soft palate for $920. Cheaper than traditional cut & stitch. Had his nostrils done as a puppy for like $500. Different vet. Went home same day & he was acting normal.

I think it’s crew that we have bred, flat faced dogs. It’s time to re-introduce a dog with a pointy your nose, and breed them back in again to a normal shaped face. Designer breeds are nonsense.
