  • Welcome to day one of bark & whiskers' Creating Healthy, Happy Pets Week 2023! Today's expert introduces us to a threat that your pet may be exposed to on a daily basis that can promote diseases like diabetes, heart disease, brain and nerve disorders, as well as the growth of tumors.
Today is day one of bark & whiskers Creating Heathy, Happy Pets Week 2023, and our first guest is Dr. David Turner, an expert on the dangers of advanced glycation end products in ultraprocessed foods and president and co-founder of the Anti-A.G.E.S. Foundation.
In our interview, Dr. Turner explains exactly what AGEs are, how they end up in processed human and pet foods, and the ways in which they turbocharge the aging process.
One challenge in limiting the damage AGEs do in the body is that the majority of people, and the vast majority of pets in the U.S. eat mostly ultraprocessed diets.

This just stirs up tons more questions that I know you probably don't have the answers to. Very thought-provoking, and I hope we keep learning more and more about AGEs in the future.

I have researched, and studied, what to feed my dogs, for years and years, with several tweaks along the way. I'll give you my recommendations to serve as a guide to help anyone interested to get started.
Pork butt, beef brisket, lamb, sardines, oysters, green tripe, organ meat paste combo, egg (raw yolk, cooked white), chlorella, iodine, beta glucan, garlic, salt, kefir. I give a few different muscle meats per meal (never chicken, as even organic isn't as nutritionally dense, and quite useless, although better than kibble), and I stick to 80/10/10 (80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 10% organs). Example... my German Shepherd eats 2% of his weight in food = 32oz total = 25.6oz muscle meat, gets 3.2 oz organs, and 3.2 oz bone, daily.
That's what goes into my 6 dogs' bowls, daily, in different amounts, obviously.
My dogs would NEVER seek out fruits and vegetables, therefore, I don't feed them any. They would know, instinctively, what to eat, and not to eat, and I honor that.
Again, I have researched, and studied this topic, ad nauseum, to do what's best for my beloved fur family members. We began this raw journey 7 years ago. I do add some cooked meat as well, as I have a picky pup who doesn't like raw pork (I cook it to med rare for her, as a compromise, and she loves it). My other dogs love the raw, with no issues, but I'd improvise, if they didn't. I do whatever it takes, which I'm sure everyone here would do as well
    I hope this helps 🙏 💕 😌

I know you are right about the vegetables. There is a new trend in the raw feeding sector that I have noticed which is to feed more veggies. Turns out that feral dogs have been studied and they naturally seek prey and not veggies. True, canids will eat some grass on occasion and that probably is because they seek some fiber or other component from grass to aid their GI tract. But, they certainly don't eat a belly full. The veggie trend is even going so far as to add carrots to substitute for active vitamin A (retinol) in the false assumption that carnivores have the enzymes to convert Beta Carotene to active vitamin A. Also, see people recommending mushrooms to supply vitamin D even though carnivores need D3 not D2 found in mushrooms. Also the mistaken inclusion of flax seed or flax seed oil to supply omega 3 fatty acids. However, plant omega 3s are short chain not long chain-- Species evolved to eat at the top of the food chain need long chain omega 3 fatty acids and lack the enzymes to convert plant omega 3 to long chain form. Krill, for example, can eat plankton and convert the omega 3 in the plankton to long chain omega 3 so krill oil does contain long chain omega 3. These plant ingredient mistakes I have listed are being made by some of the highly respected "experts" in the raw feeding blogsphere and not just by the amateurs. I have also heard more than one of these experts suggest that we should all increase the percent of veggies in our home prepared diets for our dogs "because of climate change". Turns out that pastured ungulates are good for the planet because the meadows they promote sink more carbon than most forests. Growing all the soy, corn, quinoa and vegetables is not without environmental damage. Anyway, at least your dogs and my dogs aren't being force fed lots of vegetables.

We are completely raw feeders here. Kibble is not species appropriate. Sadly 50,000 traditional vets are owned by companies like Hills. That is what Vets are taught. Hope this video helps kibble feeders to change. Dogs are the sickest they have ever been.

A couple months ago I met a vet married with royal canin. And got mad at me that didn't want to continue seeing my dog cause I denied to buy this food though I told her I once gave this food to dog years ago and developed g.i. issues. Good for me I was only asking for yearly check up to check her as Dr cause her old doctor retired and was looking for a new one.

A shelf stable food into perpetuity should be a big red flag for anyone with a brain. Obvious to me now at least about 5 years if you are feeding your pet commercial grain foudation garbage it would be like feeding your kids Mcdonalds for every meal.
My 4 year old fox terrier has never eaten commercial garbage, he eats a raw animal based diet with meat, skin, bones, organs, eggs, fish very modest vegetables and has perfect teeth never needs his teeth brushed, no stinky breath, no allergies, perfect weight and in perfect health.

Question for Dr. Turner: Does freeze drying or air drying alter the amount of AGEs? And what type of numbers does it increase by?

And what about HPP (High Pressure Pasteurization) done to raw meat to kill bacteria and protozoa in meat to be sold as raw pet food?

Hello from Ukraine! 5 days ago my cat Yoda have passed away in vet clinic due his lungs being filled with blood, he stopped eat prior to it. His cat father, is OK but I've stopped giving him same cat food as his passed away cat-son. Can you please tell, what should I do (or what actions should I take) - if I have a suspicions that local food suppliers are providing such toxic food?

Why is it so hard to see what wild cats eat and feed your cat a raw animal based diet. You think if my 4 year old dog is healthy eating raw chicken, fish, eggs, bones, skin, organs like what wolf might eat a cat which is an obligate carnivore should eat animal products, no grain or tons of plant foods.

I watch and listen to Dr Dobias in Canada that is holistic and friend w/ Dr Karen Becker. I get his supplements and my Maggie Puggle lived to be 16.5 yrs. I cooked her food for last few yrs of her life and before that I got frozen or refrigerated food… never kibbles or can food!

"Climate Change" is not making it harder to get good foods. American government policy to generate exaggerated fear and regulations about CC are what is actually causing price increases and shortages of foods.
