    Thanks Mike for this tutorial. I'm ready to install my new tank I purchased. Need to lay pipe. This helps.

    If you paint your tank, keep it a light color. dark colors absorb heat causing the propane to expand. not a good thing.

      but when temps are single digits wouldnt it be nice to have the tank dark?

    They fill the tank to 80% to allow for expansion. propane expands 15% more than water. The underground with the twin stage regulator will be in a window of 11 to 14 Inches of water column. with 14"WC equaling 1/2 psi pressure. It looks great, I just don't like the flex connector to the trailer.

    Nice tank and installation .. mine looks almost identical .. except holds 500 gallons .. which means roughly 420 gallons of propane after a fill up to just over 83% on gauge.

    The metal tape I believe is so the line locators can find the line when buried, since the supply line is plastic. And I think he was telling you 12 lbs. per square inch of pressure in you line. As far as filling it 80% it might be for expansion in the AZ sun but I'm not sure.

    I have the same size tank, I rent mine also but when I fill mine it always gets filled to the max, mine doe not have any kind of caution tape on my line, my full tank last about 5 months for a family of 4 and everything is gas in my house. comes in handy when the power goes out, we still have hot water and can still cook all our meals. can't do that with a all electric house.

    • @ArizonaHotHomestead
      @ArizonaHotHomestead  10 років тому

      good to know. it is funny when talking with the gas guy he did say sometimes a tank does get more than 80% but it depends on the person, mood, you and your mood, and they end up charging you for only 80% so they don't get into trouble. . are you being charged for a 100% full tank or charged for 80% even though the tank if 100%? I love the idea of only filling it 2 times a year or so.

      They only fill to 80% because propane expands under hotter temperature that 20% left is for expansion space, if the tank doesn't have space left in it, it will pop the relief valve and there goes a waste of propane but most importanly it prevents danger hazards safety is the main reason why they fill to 80% i work for a propane company thats the way i was trained when i started working.

    I was looking around for large propane tank installations to travel trailers. The supplier near me said it was against the law for him to attach a mobile home type tank to a travel trailer. He said there are cases of people pulling away without unhooking and causing substantial damage. I think it's kind of dumb because these big travel trailers can be parked like mobile homes. So I'm looking to attach it myself. A friend of mine painted his tank black. The local fire marshall told him to paint it 50% a light color so that they could find the tank in an emergency. So he painted white spots on it like a cow. Thanks for the video. I wondered how the stakers found a plastic line.

    • @ArizonaHotHomestead
      @ArizonaHotHomestead  8 років тому

      +Brad Taylor stakers find the line? actually there is a metal tape that laid with the pipe. . I understand the lighter color tank is to reduce the heat/pressure build up inside the tank. . for a trailer what about using the 100lb tanks? they are equal to 5 of the grill size tanks but the diameter is the same just the height it different. I like the 40lb tanks just becus their size and weight when full is still easy to move around. I thought about the large 100lb tanks but felt when I get older I might not want to move them. lol

    • @Buck1954
      @Buck1954 8 років тому

      +ArizonaHotHomestead yes, I was agreeing. I didn't know about the metal tape buried with the plastic line until I saw your video. I feel the same way about the tanks. I was going to purchase a 100lb tank also, but getting it to the service tank would require a small dolly to pull behind my ATV. So I have 4-30 lb tanks instead. They fit in the rack inside my trailer. I may eventually shift to an out door tank for easy access. Thanks for your video.

    They don't fill it 80% of the way "for strange reasons", they fill it to 80% for physics and safety reasons. Propane is liquefied under pressure and it must have room to expand -- that's where the extra 20% of the space in the tank come in handy. Otherwise, it will blow easily due to temperature and volume changes.

    • @ArizonaHotHomestead
      @ArizonaHotHomestead  8 років тому +1

      +Alex Povolotski thanks. its funny when I used a lot during the winter he filled it to 95% saying its cold and I am using enough that it wont take long before it is to 80%. thanks for the info. in az the summer here will get to 95 and full direct sun much hotter so I can see why.

    7:11 - "12 something" probably means "12 inches of water column" which is another way of saying "about 0.4 psi" - or pounds per square inch. This is the normal pressure most propane appliances need to function properly.
    Some propane systems (not yours) have a '1st stage' regulator at the tank that delivers about 10 psi, and another '2nd stage' where it enters the home that reduces the pressure to about 0.5psi. In your case, it appears you have a single 'multi stage' regulator that just delivers 0.4psi from the tank.
    What's the difference? In a high-demand situation, it's simply cheaper to run 10psi in a smaller line. But in your case with low demand, what you have is going to be more than adequate. You have a short run to the house, the line is plenty big (looks like 3/4" line?) and you probably aren't heating a 2,000 square foot house.

    Propane seems to be a great choice for your layout. How cold is your coldest winter? My wife and I full-time in a 28ft travel trailer in Cincinnati and the propane heater can keep the place plenty comfortable if the power goes out. We are by no means off-grid so in the winter we run a 1500W space heater to heat the whole trailer. The furnace only kicks in when the indoor temp falls below 65. Last winter we had some serious cold spells (two weeks of -5 to -15 minus the wind chill) and it still only kicked on two or three times a day. I'm hoping it doesn't get that cold where you are. If so you will be going through a tank every 2 months or less. If I use our furnace for primary heat I go through 10 gallons in 8 days when it's 25 degrees outside and that's using electricity for hot water and cooking. Keep those videos coming. I look forward to seeing more.

    • @ArizonaHotHomestead
      @ArizonaHotHomestead  10 років тому

      I like it when people who comment tell me a little about what they have it helps me gage things better. thanks. my winters can get down to 0 but mostly between 10 and 25 for about 2 months. maybe winter highs around 40 for some winters. a few years back the high was no higher than 25 degrees for over 60 straight days. sounds like you don't use wood for heat. I do plan on part of my place to use a wood stove. the rv furnace should keep me warm at night. thanks again

      @wtss8629 10 років тому

      ArizonaHotHomestead
      I'm here to help. Sounds like your winters aren't much different than ours here in Cincinnati. It's usually pretty mild but last winter came out of left field. Farmer's Almanac says we're in for a doozie this year too so I'm already getting things in place.
      My water lines are above ground so I have them heat taped and insulated and that includes some pipes on the trailer like my sink lines. The factory forgot to tuck them inside the floor insulation. Found that out the hard way my first winter. The low point drains are the first to freeze as they aren't insulated at all in any trailer. I'm not sure how you're set up but I heat tape and insulate my holding tanks and my valves too. They freeze up tight and can get ugly.
      I realize electric heat tape isn't much of an option for you but I hope it gives you an idea of where problems will come from. The pipes in a trailer aren't where cabin heat gets to them easily. Good news is some but not all of that is taken care of when you run the furnace and heat the areas near the pipes.
      We are by no means off grid and hooked up to shore power (the park) 24/7 so we use a single 700/1500W space heater that keeps the 28 footer plenty warm (above 70) with little if any help from the propane furnace. I hate to think how much propane we would go through if that were our only heat source. We run the water heater on electric primarily too and only use the propane side as a booster as needed. This setup gets me through winters with 4 five gallon tanks through the winter.

      @ArizonaHotHomestead  10 років тому +1

      Weather The Storm Survival . I like the idea of the electric heat tape but with being on solar/wind I am not sure about it. I couldn't find the heat tape that ran off of dc. all seem to be 120v . which my inverter will handle but the battery storage power might not be enough. for now going with layers and a prayer. lol. I do plan on for the future to do videos on propane usage so stay tuned

    • @wtss8629
      @wtss8629 10 років тому

      I doubt it would be worth spending the money to have the juice to run the amount of heat tape you would need. As for the large tank if you keep the water moving somehow I doubt it would freeze. Aerators maybe? This may help your purification/chlorination process too? Just some thoughts. Even if it does this still leaves the above ground portions of your lines as the most vulnerable spots to freeze. Double the insulation and then enclose them in 4" black ABS pipe might generate enough heat if you have enough sun.

    I prefer to own my tank despite the upfront cost. I can get the lowest price just by shopping around and filling up in the summer, I like that freedom and due to all the horror stories I read online, I don't trust propane suppliers so I am very careful whenever I have to buy propane.

    • @ArizonaHotHomestead
      @ArizonaHotHomestead  8 років тому

      I like that. I was thinking this way I don't trust the gov. over the last 30 yrs there has been at least 2 regulations on the small propane tanks so I feel with the focus of some on climate change/global warming that there will soon be more regulations on the larger propane tanks too. this way the propane company covers the cost of the valve or what ever the new regs are instead of me paying something like 200 bucks for it. I don't like the annual rental fee but I just know the politicians will want some campaign money or personal money from a lobbyist and quietly you have new propane tank regulations. . I can always return that tank and go with another company but I am stuck with the gov. lol

      good point. however get this in az you are required to get a permit and they tell you were to harvest firewood and there is a limit to how much. in some areas wood fire is prohibited. lol in the phx area the no burn rules now applies to every day and all types of wood fires. one of the reason I left phx. so far in the show low area there are enough people who rely of wood for heat that it is still allowed but we still have no burn days too. even if you own the land you can not harvest the trees for fire wood. lol yes its ridiculous.

      Blankets! Lots of blankets, slippers and housecoat for potty runs. That's how you save on heating. People these days are spoiled. Try heating with a coal furnace in the basement where the last thing you do before bed is fill it up and it's out in the AM. People today want to heat the whole house to 78 f, 24/7. They want to sit around in a t-shirt & underwear and never feel cold, even when it's zero outside. Nice but it can really cost a lot to heat a "Mac Mansion", as opposed to dressing warmer inside the house. Hay! To each their own, right. You'll get by fine with that setup.
