She suffered alot of injuries for the role. But it put her on the top alongside gong li and Michelle yeoh
I love what her character represents. Strength, humility, and a seemingly delicate but resilient pureness of heart. There's an undeniable attractiveness that originates from admiration and appreciation of everything she embodies. She is one of few ideal heroines in any storyline.

beautiful photography and cinematography, as well atmosphere. Fantastic acting and music production, but unfortunately the movie lacked a plot, which is unfortunate considering how much seemed to have gone into this movie...

If it was shown in “the West”, it must have been a limited release because any film with Grandmaster in the title would have caught my eye. As others have commented, it needs to be shown in its original version or the viewer is cheated.

@ghylltarvoke It's not available in the west in its original cut. I know it used to have a Hong Kong BluRay which was the same version that played in Hong Kong theatres, but it's Out of Print. I don't know if there's a mainland China BR release that's still in print, and if it's the uncut version. It's beyond outrageous that one of the best movies of the past 10 years has been completely destroyed and made unavailable for the worldwide audience. And it's disgraceful how WKW himself had a hand in destroying his own masterpiece for its western releases.

So soooo many great movies have been altered/changed/heavily cut before (or after) reaching Western shores, usually on demand by the Western publishers, who feel a Western audience simply wouldn't 'get it'.
ghylltarvoke There is a possibility for a 2020 restoration release with both versions on one disc. It was announced last month that all of WKW’s films will be restored by Block2 Productions and distributed by the Janus Films and the Criterion Collection in the U.S.
