  • This video illustrates how Girard Thibault's rapier grip relates to the more common rapier grip:
Thibault's grip is what happens when you take a common extended grip, with the pommel in the channel of the wrist (first part of the video), but rotate the blade about 90 degrees clockwise (for a right-hander). This puts the true edge to your left, inner guards up, outer guards down, quillons horizontal (second part). The thumb is on the top of the inner quillon. The palm is facing left and a little bit down.
This operation is of course never performed in a fight, but just illustrates how both grips differ in terms of blade and quillons orientation relative to the hand and forearm. Read more about Thibault's grip here: blog.subcaelo....

What are the benefits of one over the other, and vice versa?

Hello, there are a lot of details in the article: blog.subcaelo.net/ensis/thibaults-grip/ ! But the gist of it is that the common grip is stronger for parries and cuts, while Thibault's is better suited to manipulate the opponent's blade freely in all directions.

Геправильный хаат. Не фиксируется для колющих ударов, не удобен для рубящих, и подставляет пальцы. Таким хватом работать оружием все оавно, что писать зажав ручку в кулаке
