The Viper GTS-R Concept is the perfect cover car for Sega GT. Came at the peak of Viper glory, had a lot of promise, and uhh... failed to deliver on anything other than being a styling direction. Shame we never got a proper GTS-R...

What r u talking about? That's just a concept car which they actually did use in real races. The GTS R viper was around back in 96 even going by as the Chrysler Viper GTS R. The GTS R was originally a homologation car specifically for racing which is why the 96 GTS R street version even exist so as to be allowed in the 24hrs of Le mans. They continued making the GTS R all the way up to the final model of the viper. Honestly the concept gtsr just looks like a track 06-10 viper imo

    • @MIIIVideo
      @MIIIVideo Рік тому +5

@JERACERX ooh right yeah, I think that's the legit racecar version of the concept. The GTS R was built for racing=homologation car. It's not impossible to get one only nearly and it will be overpriced. Like the BMW M3 GTR street version. Homologation cars are usually built in extremely low numbers, I know there's like no more than 10 m3 gtr street versions on the planet right now but theres probably more racecars. If u want a GTS R viper your best bet is a 4th or 5th gen ACR basically the same thing. I still don't know what this guy was talking about. The GTS R was not a failure definitely not like sega GT

Sega GT 2002 was a major improvement over its predecessor. Much better physics (cars felt like they had proper weight to them, lose traction more naturally, had assists, etc.), track design was miles better, music was better, and had a wear and tear system where you had to lookout for your car. 2002 also had a used parts system similar to Episode I Racer. The only thing 2002 was really missing from it's predecessor was a very big lack of race cars for some reason. In fact, I think the only race car I had in the game was a classic Celica from the 70s.
2002 was my go to sim on XBox until Forza came out. It's backwards compatible on the 360, but has some slow down. If you can ever get the chance, try it out.

The two series are definitely different, but I think the comparison is more related to Gran Turismo in 1997 and Ridge Racer Type 4 following a year later in 1998, at the time Namco with Ridge Racer 1994-1996 was pretty much the go to driving arcade racer involving cars on the platform with little to no competition in terms of household name status, then along comes the new juggernaut Gran Turismo that took the world by storm so Namco was forced to put their all into Type 4 and it definitely paid off

Of the car collecting games on the original Xbox, I had both Forza and Sega GT 2002. But I think PGR4 actually nailed the car collecting idea.
Hear me out. I found both Forza and Sega GT formats kind of a little bit aimless. Build cars, move onto the next racing tiers. But the races which were unlocked were just the same 5 minute 8 or so car blasts over 3 laps, with fields of cars spread massively in terms of pace. Never really caught the bug as it didn’t feel like the grinding was worth the returns from the games. PGR4 on the other hand, with a plethora of different types of events and the seeding system, really did feel like it was something worth going over and over. The tracks and locations were massively engaging and I feel like it simply didn’t need any car modifying to be engaging.

I owned all the Sega GT games. The original Dreamcast version and the 2 sequels on the Xbox. I agree with you about the bad car handling. Very few Dreamcast racing games had good car handing apart from MSR & Le Mans 24 Hours. Sega GT's biggest issue for me is the terrible track design. This is where Gran Turismo beats all the pretenders to it's throne as well as it's presentation. I've played tons of racing games where the car handles badly like Ridge Racer but the track design and music was so good that it carried me through the game. This Sega GT game couldn't do that for me. It's Bad execution all-round. The sequel Sega GT 2002 has an excellent UI and music, a mix of Rock & Funk. The graphics are good but the sun bloom can be a bit heavy on some tracks. There are event races and a historical mode where you can win classic cars as well as the standard 1-player mode. There is a photo mode during race replays. The game has a car damage gauge when it fills-up you retire from the race but there is no visual or mechanical damage on the car and no Pit-stops. It's feels like the car handling was designed for a wheel instead of a pad. The steering is sensitive with a pad and you can Fishtail the car due to a lack of grip. The track design is poor but not as bad as the first game. The third and final game was basically the same as the 2002 game but with Online-play and more cars plus a few extra race options.

I didn't get a Dreamcast until around 2006, and found this game several years later. I was excited to play it since I love Gran Turismo, and this game got very positive reviews. That excitement quickly wore off as soon as I started driving. It didn't matter what car I chose or what upgrades and setup I had, every car wobbled back and forth to a ridiculous degree. I heard somebody say that it felt like a pogo stick attached to a skateboard, and that was pretty accurate. After about 15 hours, I gave up. Terrible physics. It's a shame too, because I like just about everything else about the game.

    There was something so enjoyable about taking stock configured cars to Paris and driving them around. That arcady feel really sold it too. You want to get around the city quick in a fast car?     Oh! Oh! I know this one! Sega GT 2002 was the first game I got for my Xbox. I came from having played every Gran Turismo game up until that point and being a huge fan of said games. So, without reading anyone elses comments to stay unbiased, here's what I thought;
It felt *different*. I remember it felt like a really competent racing game, and even though the "feel" of it was way different from Gran Turismo, it didn't strike me as wrong or bad. I remember it feeling a bit more aggressive than GranT perhaps, like you were kinda wresting your way through the circuits with more of a brutal approach, perhaps because the level of grip was comparably higher. I don't really remember the tracks too well, but I don't recall disliking them. What I did find a bit odd was the car selection, there were way less outright race cars if I recall correctly, but for me personally it wasn't a big deal as I usually preferred to stick to "normal" cars anyway.
Lastly I guess there was like a durability system, which I remember being not really that exciting; you basically had to decide if your upcoming race was hard enough that you needed the car to be in tip-top shape to win or not, and you'd just save the money if not. Mostly it just made you slower, I don't recall any particularly dynamic or exciting handling changes from having various damaged parts.
In general, I really enjoyed it, but it felt like it had nowhere near the same staying power as contemporary Gran Turismo titles, or even the first Forza games.

Good video, nice quality. I totally agree with observations about driving and tracks. I dearly wanted to love this game. I got out my Dreamcast and my Rally wheel tonight and continued my game save from 2004. After a couple of fun time trials I hopped into the Viper GT and it was comically bad, like totally broken. Car bouncing around, hard to see pavement changes throwing your car sideways and up in the air, unable to put any power down at all, inconsistent engine sounds, getting passed in a one make race like I was tied to a post, despite beating lap records by 8 seconds and qualifying first. Ai cars were just bouncing off each other all over the track and spinning around but still able to repass me. I found this video wondering if anyone agreed.
Sega GT 2002 was better but imo was much of the same and the tracks were still not very memorable. Handling still felt disconnected. Sad that this game, like you said, kinda sucked. I loved Sega first then loved Gran Turismo 1 and was hoping this would be great. Gonna stick with MSR, PGR and Forza 1.

Totally fair review. I love Sega racers but I couldn't get into Sega GT.
Anyway A Team (AM2) kept knocking it out of the park on Dreamcast with Ferrari 355 Challenge.
Wow entertaiment usually made arcade shooter and RPGs so they were out of it medium it seems.
Also they probably didn't get GT level of budget.

    Good video !
As someone who got this game because of the cover, I was disappointed as well. Anything after playing GT3 got me super picky with my racing games. Since I played SEGA GT after GT3 made me not like the game. As for SEGA GT 2002, I played it not to long ago, it was a slight improve but very forgettable. The car physics in that game was still not great. I specifically remember the turns feeling sooo sluggish that it didn’t feel like the car was turning.

I wish I knew how to make mods for racing sims. I want to take all the cars and tracks from the Dreamcast's Sega GT, and first port it to Assetto Corsa. Then I would make improvements to the tracks and make them believable. I'd do things to open up the draw distances so the tracks don't feel claustrophobic. Of course I'd update the textures and road meshes. For the "improved" versions of the tracks where I changed the courses, I'd save them as alternates to the original.
Tieing these tracks together would be a game launcher that has a lot of Sega GT's elements included. The license tests, the works cars, buying, selling and upgrading cars would be possible. The only thing I'd leave on the cutting room floor would be the Carrozzaria. Not that I don't like the idea, but the vehicles would end up being too over powered.
But this is wishing. In reality, I got to get making a basic track down, first.
I have no excuse! Blender is free, it can run if installed on a USB Thumb drive, there are tons of tutorials, and my PC can run it on a bad day. Yup! I know what I am doing over the weekend.

The game was literally wrapped in a translation wrapper for the Xbox with some minor tweakage, not that hard to make it work on its original intended platform the Dreamcast and some think if it had been released on the Dreamcast it could have stayed off its early death because the DC lacked a decent racer. It helped in both the DC and OG Xbox were basically PC's in a box, when Nintendo had to convert another DC game Skies of Arcadia, they had to rewrite pretty much everything to make it work on the Gamecube.

What specs do you run the pc version with?
Yes it was gran turismo for pc and i bought it for that. my pentium 3 was too slow and it had very low frame rate. after i upgraded the cpu the game runs too fast in certain areas of the tracks. I couldnt fix it and gave up.
i tried again at some point with a more modern pc but same issue the game ran too fast at certain parts. like i could be slowing down into a corner and suddenly it went into fast forward. you can tell by the clock in game.
i must be doing something wrong as you dont seem to have that problem. anyways it gives me hope and i might one day try it again.

This game physics sucks, but you know what, I kinda love it. Every once in a while I have to imply reinstall it and re play just to listen to its musics. If you play it for a very, very long time, you'll start getting used to its physics, and with the pros the game has, it starts getting fun. Someday I will 100% it and unlock the key-truck sega gt has.

It isn't perfect but it's good still and a fair game I really enjoyed it (especially the car builder and events for them, I love that feature so much) for its own features though but I find it when I take a break hard to get back into this game. The feel isn't as easy but eventually I do again and can progress pretty well.
I forget about the works cup/brand licenses but yeah it rewards skilled players. I can't achieve some licenses but I don't hate it's a feature. It's nice there is something there for other players or a goal to try and get skilled at. Then again car builder and works both things games today never have done much again why are Devs not even bothering with bland features then exciting ones.
The feel is pretty alright but does get awkward for sure the higher the class/parts, the classes were interesting to see as it's more a thing games do more these days even if it can be awkward sometimes there is a bit of grinding and menus are nice. The licenses can be tricky at first just like Gran Turismo 1 is for me in feel and times to meet.
The car selection is pretty alright for the time I think. Tracks very few but all pretty memorable I found, not the most amazing visually for a fantasy feel but I assume they weren't going for that but I can tell what things are and they do the job with each layout, city, circuit and so on location touches. Drag racing takes a bit of getting used to especially later events.
My favourite feature (haven't played Sega GT 2002 but it not having that feature makes the Dreamcast entry better in my opinion as it's a deal breaker to me) is the car builder.
Put whatever parts, frame and be your own manufacturer is just so cool to me.
Sure it's by menus and Supercar Street Challenge allows you to see frame/shell changes with a model swap menu (no parts but it's more arcadey) and Apex I haven't experienced how it apparently does things (didn't mind the RPG elements in other Milestone games though) but still no games do this at all anymore it's all licenses.
The closest is Vision GT manufacturers car attempts digitally. Not players.
I like some features of old having that touch to it like making your own video game level.
Or mechanics that made games fun like the Battlefield 2 swap between characters on the map as challenges or just because of a different character loadout/getting around the map easier.
The PGR2 dealership you can walk around, same as your garage. The GT7 dealership cutscene made me think back to the PGR games garage and PGR2 walkable dealership. Menus are something but I mean a dealership as a walkable menu to buy or 3D model view look at cars is so cool.
The garages feel like yourself even for a little bit as they are set pieces that change with more cars at least in 3 I remember that and of course Geometry Wars.
But yeah Sega GT surprised me. I get why it's forgotten but it's good I think just like Auto Modellista, Enthusia Professional Racing, TOCA/Grid and R Racing Evolution get looked back on for their reasons.

GT 2002 came as a 2 for 1 release with I think Jet Set Radio Future? I remember it felt better than about every other console game I played up to that point. It had features that many games wouldn't have for years, but I can't quite remember specifics. I think it had like a dealership test drive thing, a photo mode, used parts that would fail mid race. (I bought a used muffler for my Peugeot 206 that ended up failing, so my car got loud and trailed smoke the rest of the race)
It was a bit easy though, I just about beat all the events with the tuned 206... 😅

Sega GT 2002 was my first ever console game so the nostalgia is through the roof for this game.
I recently finished it again and I would say it's a decent game with many flaws. The best part about the game is the overall atmosphere or vibe, with the great soundtrack of jazz/rock and the career mode with an actual 3d garage where you collect cars. It's as much a car rpg as the GT series but the official races are entirely unrestricted while some unofficial races are not.
Driving physics is alright but has flaws and certainly not as good as any GT game. Tracks, while looking great, generally have poor design and bad flow to them although there are a few really good ones.
Loved the game as a kid, but driving physics just isn't good enough to enjoy unless nostalgia is all you are after.
