  • Literature is the thematic equivalent of the homeland through which we build a world that is equal to ours, which forms a temporary alternative to that void that keeps besieging us when we leave the homeland.
Maysaloon Fakher is an Iraqi novelist born in Nasiriyah in 1964. She has published three books and is currently a documentary producer at Al-Jazeera Documentary Channel. She is also a regular contributor to various Arabic media outlets such as Al-Quds Al-Arabi. The themes of immigration and escape from one's homeland, despite not having lived it personally, greatly informs her work and adds a sense of darkness and sadness to much of her writing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
