Tree Camping High Up In The Canopy

  • In this video I use my homemade Portaledge to camp high up in the tree canopy. It is like another world up there and was a amazing experience. It also gave me the opportunity to try out my new hanging stove and cup holder.
The music was "Higher by Silent Partner " from UA-cam audio library, quite fitting music for the location of my camp

I would have been a lifetime fan and subscriber just if you were doing the pub shed videos. But in the last few days I have been pleasantly surprised to learn your passion for camping, climbing and nature. You are the national treasure gift that keeps on giving.

Nice of you to say Alex, the pub shed got me through lockdown and I do love the place, but my main reason for UA-cam was wildcamping, which will always be my no one love..... thanks Pat

Really well done Pat. At 22 I've been watching UA-cam nearly half my life and I've not seen many other folk put so much effort into making films as yourself. All that welding and sewing and stitching was definitely worth it. Look forward to the next one.

Thanks for the vicarious thrill. I am reminded of a young environmental activist in the USA who lived for many months in a tree house in the canopy of an old growth Redwood tree that had been scheduled to be cut down. Friends brought her food; reporters had to climb up the tree to interview her. She became quite famous for a while. After the lumber company finally agreed to spare the tree, she came down. A short time after that, someone girdled the tree and it died.

What an effort Pat. I can only imagine how difficult it was to produce this video. Glad it was a success. The owls sounded really clear too, you must have been in their tree and yes the tree was indeed a Yew and possibly hundreds of years old.

Hi Sandy nice to hear from you, not as high as you get but still felt amazing, once over 15 foot could not see the ground so just forget about it. The woodland is the grounds of a old Hall built in the 1820,s so the tree could be 200+ years old, in the suburbs of Sheffield surrounded by houses but a bit of a sanctuary for wildlife as nobody goes there, sort of private. Could sit up there for hours just watching and listening to the birds, amazing spot, all the best Pat

Hey Pat !! My name is Jerry and I'm watching you from South Carolina in the US ! WOW !! This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen ! I'm going to be 60 years old on March 6th and you made me feel like a kid again !! From age 6 we always has tree houses and special climbing trees that were our secret hang outs ! I just never thought of doing this ! But now my old brain is clicking about maybe trying this !! About 5 mins in to this video I realized just how difficult time you had just placing the cameras !! Man I tell you what I have to hand it to you this was AWESOME !! Thank You Brother for a great time ! PS I love Owls ! I have a small farm here with horses and what not , and every night nearly from early spring on till fall ,,we hear the Owls in the trees around our house !! Oh and by the way my best friend Garry lives in our Cabana down back and he is from Yorkshire !! He liked your video too !

I have some on my property that are around 75-100 ft. tall or in your case 22.86 meters Plus some ! A Cabana is just another little house we have that is one room down stairs around 10 meters by 20 meters with an A frame room upstairs thats gonna be a bedroom later ! The downstairs has a regulation size pool table and a full size Pub style bar that has old maps of the East Coast embedded in it with polyurethane ! My wife and I painted the walls to make it look like your on an island with waves rolling in and palm trees swaying with a Sunset on one wall and a Moon rise on the other !! Its COOL !! WE just call it the Cabana ! Im going to start on a tree house soon for me and my 5 grandchildren ! I will send you Pictures of my progress !! I may even put it on UA-cam !! May God Bless You Brother ! And Thanks again for the FUN videos !!

I made a single point wall hammock years ago similar to the Forrest wall hammock but with adjustability at the head, knee and foot (The Forrest was only adjustable at the head). Because of the side compression, I don't consider it comfortable enough for an overnight stay but it's a lot of fun for a few hours. I usually rig it free-hanging away from the tree structure so I can turn it to any desired angle with a tag line.
I noticed your long side stays were deflected quite a bit causing sag in the hammock surface. Some of the Metolius portaledges have a curved spreader bar under the ledge to prevent this.

That was an inspirational video - it's amazing how much time and effort you put in to a half hour film, much of which we can only imagine. Moving the camera around for filming must have taken ages and it's easy to forget that you haven't got a team with you to help - it's just you doing all that and it was amazing to sit back and watch you. Thanks Pat, brilliant job!

As an American watching this film, married to a British woman, learning the culture of England has been a real treat. Halfway through this video I had to scroll down and write a comment just to say: A man wild camping in a tree, and putting the effort in to then film himself having a cup of tea in said tree, is the most British thing I've ever fuckin seen hahahaha. Just an outstanding effort. I hope people appreciate how many times Pat would have had to have reclimbed many of those initial segments to position the camera and show himself hauling the stuff up. One thing I would suggest for future videos like this is to get an Insta360 camera Pat. It would have been perfect to use while sitting on your portaledge. The hanging stove and cup holder are just genius. I've only just started out in wild camping, as my main hobby is photography and I want to be at good locations at sunrise, and I've learnt a lot from your videos and others. Thanks for the content.
