- In this video I analyze who would win between Nightwing and Red Hood, using feats and scaling from the main DC Comic universe.
Nightwing is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character has appeared in various incarnations; the identity was adopted by Dick Grayson when he left his role as Batman's vigilante partner Robin.Although Nightwing is commonly associated with Batman, the title and concept have origins in classic Superman stories. The original Nightwing in DC Comics was an identity assumed by alien superhero Superman when stranded on the Kryptonian city of Kandor with his friend Jimmy Olsen. Drawing inspiration from Batman and Robin, the two protect Kandor as the superheroes Nightwing and Flamebird. Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths continuity reboot in 1985, Nightwing was re-imagined as a legendary vigilante from Krypton whose story inspires Dick Grayson's choice of name when he leaves behind his Robin identity.Other stories set among the Batman family of characters have seen acquaintances and friends of Grayson briefly assume the title, including his fellow Robin alumnus Jason Todd. Gotham Knights is an action role-playing game developed by WB Games Montréal and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Inspired by the Batman: Gotham Knights comic series based on the DC Comics character Batman and his supporting cast, the game focuses on the characters Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood as they attempt to restore justice to Gotham City during a period of decline in the immediate aftermath of Batman's death. I always feel bad for Jason. So many stories just have him get his ass beat to make other characters look good, and feels like he only got to shine as a villain in Under the Red Hood.

It’s the other way around. They literally downgrade characters just to make Jason look cool or better. Like in outlaws they forced him to have a relationship with starfire just to make him look cool when it did nothing for her character and she’s much better with Nightwing and being on Nightwing’s team. Same for Roy Harper he grew up with Dick Grayson but the writers forced him to join the Outlaws even though he has much better dynamics with the Titans.
I feel that jason todd is treated by the comic writers as the red headed step child of the bat family.

I always look at fights like this a certain way: which character can defeat much stronger opponents while restraining themselves by NOT using lethal force? That's usually the character who can and will win IF all bets are off and it's a 'death battle' situation.
I think about Son of Batman (animated film) when Nightwing was able to defeat Damian when they first met. The little brat was clearly using lethal force due to the MANY slashes he got on Dick with his sword. However, the former boy wonder was able to restrain him by tying him up and hang him from a streetlight.
If Nightwing WASN'T holding back, he could've killed Damian no problem.

I’d put my money on Damian as he’s been trained to be a much more deadlier fighter than Tim could ever dream of. Damian was trained by Ra’s, Talia, and the League of Assassins pretty much from the moment he could walk. Then by Batman.
The thing that Tim has over all the other Robins, is his tactical mind and detective skills as they’re on par if not better than Batman. Ra’s respects him so much on this skill set that he’s called Tim “detective” something that Ra’s calls Batman with the highest of respects.

He is decent but below Nightwing and Red Hood by miles. He is the best detective of them all.

Tim as a whole is a good fighter but he's also a strategic genius. In comics he's beaten Lady Shiva twice and close to stalemated Cassandra Cain
I can't be the only one that's both amused and annoyed by the fact Jason is no longer the only member of the bat family that died, he doesn't even have the Robin who died title. Literally the most important part of his character, can now be applied to Nightwing, Damien, I'm sure Tim os going to bite the bucket at some point if he hasn't already

Tim kinda died after "A Lonely Place of Living" (Detective Comics first post-Rebirth arc, IIRC), when he had to make a sacrifice play and got gunned down by drones.
The New 52 Teen Titans mourned him, same goes for Steph, the bat-family and specially Bruce.
Then it was revealed that it was actually Dr. Oz (who, spoiler alert, was Jor-El of all people all along...) who had made him prisoner for reasons.
Now, besides Forever Evil and Ric Grayson, I don't think Dick has died, been mourned, etc. Even while he was Ric, he was alive and well, and kinda happy.

One thing that sets Nightwing apart from every other member including Batman is he is a prodigious athlete, and yes this does make a difference in his ability to learn and master physically faster than even an average or excellent athlete. Its been stated he is the worlds greatest acrobat. Speed, agility, strength, dexterity, balance, coordination and more go into this you could literally look at every male gold metal gymnast and combine that into him. When all of this is combined with a martial artist whos been doing it for more than half his life, dude I'm out, ill just lay here.
Reminds me of the thug who just turned around when he saw Batman. It's how I'd act if they Batfamily were about to kick my ass. I'd just lay down and be like. "Ok you got me. I don't want this smoke."
Another thing that really benefitted Nightwing in being a better fighter than Red Hood is his training with the Titans, Teen Titans and the Young Justice.
Nightwing is always training with his team mates who are metahumans or alien powerhouses. To Nightwing, guns and being lethal is nothing new.
Young justice is not comic canon
There’s a comic where Dick was analyzing his Allies and showed how he could take them down like Batman. Batman even said his destiny is to lead the Justice League

Great video! Though, I don't think people really give enough credit to Red Hood's resourcefulness and sheer will and determination, if each Robin represents a different aspect of Batman (Dick being the light-hearted JL-type superhero Batman, Tim being the world's greatest detective, and Damian being the esoteric assassin side of Batman), Jason is the man who never quits, never gives up, and is able to scrounge up and find resources for whatever he needs to do no matter what, and while he absolutely would still probably need further strategic and tactical training and further growth as a character, I think he has the potential of being the only other human who could take out a rogue Superman other than Batman tbh.
I'd say that Dick's victory, which yeah is likelier as it is, relies on him being able to take Jason down quickly, but the longer the fight goes on for the more the balances would tip in Jason's favor as Jason being leaner vs Dick being faster would likely lead to Dick getting tired more quickly, and Jason's determination and resourcefulness would come in more and more into play, bearing in mind that this man dug himself out of his own grave, he would not give up unless he's forced to. ie, Jason does stand a better chance if he is able to drag out the fight. Also, in a fight Jason being able to pull a gun right before Dick can subdue him isn't just "having guns", that's quick thinking and resourcefulness, he can make the best of whatever shitty situation he's put into very quickly, and that's skill tbh. Will say, Jason's biggest weakness is not having like cohesive plans/strategies and tactics imo, which is ironically the opposite of Tim Drake p much, but if he had that he would genuinely be much more capable on the whole.

I feel like it really comes down to who is more liked by more people. For instance, since Dick Grayson is one of the most liked DC comic book characters, he has more comics he is in and thus more experience and history for writers to draw from.
I also feel like Jason's training isn't as fleshed out as Dick's.
As much as I like both characters I like Red Hood more, but I feel like if he isn't with the Outlaws, or whatever team he is put on, he is just there to get beat up.
Which funny because in most movies and TV series, Nightwing tends to get floored all the time.
It doesn’t matter on popularity but feats of said character which depends on the writer more so… Batman has all that since the 40s but then Ghostmaker and Deathstroke shows up and roughs him up for example. Bane comes outta nowhere… popularity isn’t always a deciding factor.
@@Artryom However all the characters you mentioned were put in there to challenge the protagonist to force them to change, it's part of the heros story. Bane was made to be a physical challenge to Batman so Batman would have a struggle he would have to beat. What I am saying is that because Nightwing is so popular, writers make stories for him and since part of a story is the struggle, with how many stories Nightwing gets, he also beats a lot of struggles and thus gets stronger, so in that way the more popular Nightwing gets the more stories he gets and the more chances for him to get stronger.
@@bionic-tyro6729 Except a character can do something outrageous and beat everything they've done in a single issue take Jason vs Lady Shiva for example, Jason won and I've seen many fans argue that win places him on top of Grayson in skills. A character can have 100 stories but all it takes is one good story, one good feat, Jason Todd fan boys are also that win over Batman, Damian, Green arrow and Mnahunter beats most of what Grayson has done. The ein over nerfed Deathstroke proves Jason is the better fighter, etc etc, none of this is true but imagine those wins without what actually happened, he would be the better fighter if the context of those were genuine and fair wins.
@@Artryom While I agree that one single issue can make a character stronger, I still believe that the more popular character has the advantage because they get more issues to explore their character and thus make them stronger (or weaker in some cases) and that is just down to their being more chances to get stronger due to more issues caused by the characters popularity. This doesn't make a character with less stories weaker though, I mean Martian Manhunter has some of the strongest abilities in all of DC(if used correctly by writers) but when was the last comic that featured him as a prominent character?
And all though I am a Red Hood fan, I can admit that quite a few of his wins over established strong characters, like Deathstroke and Shiva, are due mostly to the scenarios he fights them in or taking advantage of specific weaknesses, (I don't think taking advantage of a weakness is a sign of a good fighter, but a sign of a good strategist).
Overall I never meant to sound like popularity is the only thing that decides who is stronger or not, Its not even close to the only reason. What really matters in who is going to win in a fight is what the writer wants. I remember hearing in a n interview with a comic book writer that they said that if the writer wants a character to win, then the writer will come up with a way or scenario in which the character wins.

I like the idea that each of the Robins has an specialization, but I don't think Jason's combat prowess would be number one in the family with Cass and Dick there.

I didn't realize Jason was so underpowered. I know that the writer's always have him basically lose to anyone with more experience, but this is downright criminal.
I'm aware I'm being biased but it is also true that DC doesn't know what to do with his character. From my perspective, Jason should have become Bruce's complete equal some time ago as they are the same question with different answers. There shouldn't be any copout's to his prowess or lethality.
This video just made me want to give him the justice he deserves.
He doesn’t deserve to be given unfair treatment such as making him Batman’s equal at all though. It took Grayson fifty years to obtain “Equal to Batman” status, a guy who’s been around way longer, only a year after him and yet folks still debate that Writers are trash and Batman mops him then this bratty failure comes along and should be his “Equal” ? Nah, shouldn’t be how it works my boy. It should take Jason 100 years to objectively reach his level.

Each member of the family has the short end compared to Bruce, which is fine most of the time since we wouldn't have any of them without him, but that shouldn't be the case all the time. I pointed out how I'm biased towards Jason and that's why I chose to focus on him. He's my favorite out of the Batfamily and rarely does he get the respect of a well written and compelling story with the exception of returning to life to combat his father figure. The writers need to move on, explore the next chapter in his life the right way. Even I don't think he should outright whoop Dick and Bruce but he should be headed in that direction as Batman's true equal or biggest opposition, and I think Dick should be the one to surpass them seeing as he was the only one who escaped their mentors shadow.

I’d say Nightwing due to him being either equal or a little below to Batman in skill. To my knowledge Jason hasn’t shown any feats on that level.

Looking at narratives from different stories to “me” shouldn’t factor as who would win in a fight between characters. Of course Dick looks better on paper because he’s had “several” books dedicated to him, same as Batman. The person who wins a fight in a comic is the person that writer wants to win. For me it’s feats. There indisputable. Like for example: Nightwing is literally the best none powered acrobat on earth, he literally can do moves that no one else can, or Jason’s All-Blades cutting through Robots in one issue and Spirits in the next, or Demons and Aliens. The point I’m trying make is you should use feats removed from narrative to determine who’d win. None of this holding back crap nonsense. Of course dick held back he didn’t feel like hurting whoever, or of course Jason’s holding back because if he aimed like he does when he actually kills another human the human dies. To me I think in a hand to hand Fight dick Grayson wins. But in a actual scenario where Jason is actually trying to kill dick he most likely would.

Red hood said that up until a time he was actively trying to kill Dick everytime they met up and still couldn't, Jason has that killer edge and strength on Dick but literally every other aspect is lacking compared to him, Nightwing is widely considered the most skilled fighter out of all the robins and has shown several times that he can and will take down Jason if need be.

Because you know there’s stories where he’s lost to something he shouldn’t have, or beat someone he shouldn’t have. Just recently he lost an altercation against blockbuster, even though he’s beaten blockbuster in many stories. That’s why Feats are a better way to judge if someone can win in a fight. Jason and deathstroke have weaponry that if connected to dick would kill him, that’s not a opinion it’s a fact. If shot in the head dicks dead, if heads cut off dick is dead. In the fights with dick and Jason has Jason ever landed a single hit on dick? Has he landed several hits? If so than those all could have been time where Jason killed dick. The narrative of the story is what decides who when in a “story”, but not who would most likely when in any given potential fight they could have against each other. Look passed the narrative to what could happen. Be honest Peter, if Jason or deathstroke tried to actually kill dick with no narrative deciding dick wins, does dick win sheerly out of his stats and abilities the majority of the time?

The reason why the Batman family ranking scale is a bit off kilter. Far more complex than it should be, is because they kept on progressively keeping dick Grayson considerably weaker than Batman. For unknown reasons. They hoed him so bad til it wasn’t funny. I’m glad you’re giving Dick Grayson the love recognition and the flowers he deserves. Anyway what makes this match up so compelling is how personal it is. There is a lot of baggage to unpack between these two. Like Bruce, Dick sees Jason as someone he let down. But he also has the added guilt of originally not being all that nice to him. Being jealous even. Wishing he was a better big brother, but still pretty annoyed with him.
On the flipside, Jason sees Dick as the embodiment of his inadequacies. The golden boy everyone compared him to. There's a reason, Post-Crisis Jason tried harder to kill Grayson than anyone else.
Best rivalry in comics if you ask me. Other than Cyclops and Wolverine, of course.

You forgot the most important piece of info that will tip the scale no matter what. Nightwing is considered good and Jason for the most part "evil"; we know that "good" always gets the upper hand. The gg case is closed, if it was reversed we would see the same thing.
Jason isn't anywhere close to evil? If he was, he wouldn't be apart of the Batfamily. Maybe when he first came back, he was villain material, but not now. That was a long time ago.
Could go either way but I feel like Nightwing typically has an edge, at one point he got on Batman's lvl. He may have/or has the potential to surpass Batman too but his immense respect for his father/teacher figure is a mental restraint on him if he were to fight him, while Red Hood can put up a fight against Batman but usually gets utterly outclassed if Batman puts aside their past relationship and gets 100% serious

I think Redhood augments his abilities to a greater degree with his tools. Whether they be guns, a crowbar, a knife, or whatever is around.
Meanwhile Dick trains his abilities more than anything as he basically only uses what amount to two bars of metal
nightwing has training with multiple weapons (including guns in a majority) and has talon training on top of that so it’s not far fetched to say he can use multiple weapons.

Nightwing gives Red Hood that older brother beatdown. I would love to see Red Hood get some wins on Nigthwing, and develop a rivalry similar to Leo and Raph from TMNT. I mean they already do have that rivalry but it feels very one sided in Nightwing's favor. It would be cool to see Red Hood catch up to Nightwing, just like how Nightwing caught up to Batman.

Amazing video with so much work and passion but never understood why DC always made Jason way more inferior to Dick and Bruce in pure hand to hand combat.
I suppose it's just to further his charecter,from what I believe or think(just my opinion and is subject to change) he is supposed to be the failure the one that never will be as good as the others from what I see dick is supposed to be the better batman what batman should have been but never will be, tim is supposed to the strategist,the genius, the prodigy is some sence he is supposed to be the smarter one the guy to think out situations like no one else can and Damian is despite me not liking it is the hier to cowl sure dick would be by far the better pick but dick doesnt wanna be batman but the way they are developing damin and his story is to try turn him into batman the one to actually take Bruce's place in some way most of them are either better versions or successors to bruce one way or another but jason is supposed to be the odd one out he isnt supposed to be better he is supposed to be the tragedy to kinda symbolize what tragedy can do to someone but in a way his story shows perseverance by him still choosing to do what's right in his mind regardless of the what the others say he is supposed to be the guy that resembles alot of us the guy that doesnt get the recognition from.the others the guy is never good enough despite how hard he tries but he still tries anyway I feel those elements and his drip is the reason why so many people like him cause he is a tragic character we can relate to
I like to think maybe it’s cuz he relies on dirty and underhanded and mostly lethal tactics and gadgets too often to beat them when they’re able to get up close and personal with him similar to KGBeast and Nightwing, the usage of guns and moves to kill and his own inferiority complex holds him back from being truly on par similar to the scene in this video where he admits he’d never be able to beat Batman fairly. Also, Nightwing and Batman are no strangers to UNFAIR fights so that negates his only advantage.

In the Red Hood movie it felt like Jason was easily better than Dick and was closer to being a match for Batman. It's just a movie, but still
The thing that bothers me is that, in this video, Jason was repeatedly proven to be smarter than Dick. When scaling Batman against superpowered characters, people always talk about his intelligence as an advantage, but people see Jason getting punched and think that’s all there is. Jason going all out isn’t about trying to kill his opponents since he does that anyway, it’s about outsmarting and outmaneuvering them, and if that fails, just plain cheating. Even if Nightwing went all out, including being willing to kill, the idea of cheating or using cheap tricks would never cross his mind.
This video reminds me how much I love comics and the batfamily in specific
lets look at Current versions.
Red Hood was able to beat a weakened Deathstroke by getting the drop on him.
Nightwing while severally injured was able to defeat an amped Deathstroke who even while at base was previously at the peak of his power.
Yep at the end of the day Dick is the best Combatant in the bat family, While Jason is the best at Battle Tactician in the in the bat family.

I’ve always said that Nightwing solos all members of the Bat-Family, his patience and level of intelligence is unmatched in comparison to the rest except for maybe Barbara. Nightwing easily wipes Jason, Tim, Damien, and Barbara is a little harder but he wins… aside from Cassandra she wipes everyone.

But there is no way Dick being physically stronger than Jason. Jason is heavier, according to canon, by at lest 50 pounds, and taller, and have more muscle mass. The writing is inconsistent, but from some of the Red Hood comics, it seems like the Lazarus Pit enchanced Jason's strength, and regenerative abilities. Only slightly, but it still counts.

@@hugejackedman3447 Size and Strength absolutely do go hand-in-hand. Taller + Heavier = Stronger. That doesn't mean you can't be strong while being leaner/shorter though, but your strength isn't gonna have the same potential as someone who is taller/bigger.

I personally know guys 170lbs that can deadlift 600lbs and I am 200lbs and can only lift 315lbs which is pretty low given my weight. 52 year old woman that has a record bench press of 500+ (with a shirt) and I can only do 225 (raw) Granted the old lady is a pro but still she's barely 5'5" and cant be more than 165lbs So don't hand me that nonsense! 🤣 Sure size and strenght CAN go hand in hand but don't say it's "absolute". It greatly varies depending on the person.
Better example? Gymnasts are muscular but not very big and are scientifically proven stronger than pro bodybuilders.

It all comes down to speed and agility vs strength and brutality. And of course whoever is the writer of the comic. Dick has the experience and the better feats but that can be directly linked to Jason being killed off in the 80’s. After all Dick is one year younger than Batman himself in terms of publication. Jason is my favorite robin so it’s hard not to be biased but in a fair or even slightly unfair fight in Jason’s favor, Dick probably still wins. That being said I don’t think it would be an easy fight and I’d still root for Jason to win by a miracle. There’s only so many times I can bear to watch his character get bullied before I say enough and don’t care anymore.

This is a pretty good video, and plays out like I would expect. I think Red Hood using guns, even with all of his training, is why he is at a disadvantage, it's easy to kill a person, more so people who can't fight back as well, he never needed to learn to dodge attacks, or redirect them. It's harder to take them down non-lethally, the restraint needed, to do it, even when pissed off, goes a long way. Jason's rage, his angle, leaves him open, vulnerable, because I think he is also conflicted deep down, a desire to see the world burn, "evils" punished, but also a desire to fit in, to be accepted by his "family" he is part of, so he does always hold back, on some level.
Plus I am sure all the greivious bodily harm he has suffered, as well as the physical, mental, and emotional trauma of his death really doesn't help.
DC is so unbelievably convoluted that to me it's difficult to come up with a legitimate answer without some sort of writing inconsistencies or contradictions. The only way I'd 100% stand behind a victor in terms of a fight between these two is if it was to happen now. No bullshit, just a drawn out fight between the two utilizing everything they have to offer. Jason has a lot under his belt that unfortunately is never written into anything, but Dick has a lot under his belt too. I wrote a prior comment but changed my mind, I used the Vamp storyline even though it is not in canon. With that being said, I still feel like it shows Jason's potential as a combatant assuming every event in that story up until his death was the same/similar to the canon Earth. Meaning that he would be fully capable of beating Dick considering that's what he did in that issue. Though, as you said it is not canon. Mostly shows his characters potential if he is handled correctly.
i'm pretty sure Grayson was holding back in the vamp series, there was no reason for him to take out Jason if he was trying to recruit him. vampire Nightwing has enhanced supernatural abilities and could've punt kicked Jason into the ocean if he wanted

Great Video! I was just thinking the "Red vs Nightwing" debate since i've seen some poeple claim DC is pushing the idea that Jason is the stronger of the two, with their fight in task force Z and in the Dc Vampire stuff, where Jason says he's a better fighter.
Not canon, the writers even talked about the freedom of being in an Elseword. It's just as inconsequential as any other alt-universe. It was never intended to sway the interpretations surrounding main-continuity.
