  • On Friday, June 17, 2016 at 12:00am, I left Bunker Hill, WV on my 2007 Yamaha FJR1300 and rode 1,288 miles to Key West, Florida in under 21 hours. I am currently waiting on the ride to be officially recognized by the Iron Butt Association. I rode through West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and the entire state of Florida before spending the night at the Silver Palms Inn in Key West.

    Nice video. Did Delaware to Key West last week on a KTM 1290 SAS. Then back to Delaware. Took the slight detour to the left heading south onto Card Sound Road, just after Homestead, to avoid the jersey barriers into Key Largo
    Enjoying your videos.

    Makes me really miss my 09 FJR. Hated to sell it but needed to at the time (2014). I'm on a 2017 Trophy now, which is a fine motorcycle, but it doesn't pack the punch of the FJR,

      I just bought my first FJR - an 09 AE with the electronic clutch - a month ago. I also have a Speed Triple and a Piaggio BV 350 scooter. I've recently owned a Bonneville and a 955i Tiger as well. While I think the Speed Triple is the coolest motorcycle ever, and I will have a difficult time ever parting with it, this FJR is just wonderful. I've long wanted an FJR and I'm glad I finally got one.

    Leaving at midnight on wet roads is crazy. lol Even crazier to ride for so many hours. Lots of energy drinks. I know this video is old, but what possesses a person to ride a bike through the night on wet roads for 21 hours? I hope she was worth it was my first thought. Maybe you say something in the next video? I'll check it out. Nice job!!

      No energy drinks for even caffeine; only water. I did another Iron Butt ride (started out wet and dark again) last year. ua-cam.com/video/1zD7gd2GElg/v-deo.html

    Hey man, awesome video! I'm planning a similar trip from Upstate NY to Tampa, FL this summer. I'll be on my '06 FJR1300AE. A few questions if you don't mind? How did you like the trip? Around how far could you make it on a tank? I'm excited man, glad to see I'm not the only one who's crazy enough for a whole east coast run.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  5 років тому

      First few hours in the dark kinda sucked but once the sun came up it was like I got a fresh boast of energy. I95 isn't the most exciting ride but it wasn't too bad. I quite enjoyed riding down through the Keys. The ride over 7 Mile Bridge as the sun was setting was absolutely awesome. That said, you said you're headed to Tampa. I think you'll enjoy it was well. I was just down there 2 months ago on the Gulf side of Florida and it was excellent. I was getting 180-200 miles before the low fuel light would kick on.

    Wow what a run . How did you feel riding that amount of hours straight ? How long where your breaks?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  8 років тому +2

      the day of the ride I was fine. It didn't start to catch up to me until a couple of days later. As for stops, I rode about 200 miles, stopped 5 min for fuel and then rode about another 200 miles before stopping for fuel again (to start the trip). I did stop for breakfast and lunch (maybe 20-25 min each). After the first 2 tanks for fuel (which I rode straight through), I would stop about every 100 miles to stretch or drink some water and then ride another 100 miles before filling up the tank again. I'd say most stops were 5-10 minutes, tops.

    A1A in the Keys sounds good on a Jimmy Buffett song, but not much fun being stuck behind a Conchy Joe drivin' slow. DAMHIK Anyway, what would you have done differently? How'd you handle tolls around Miami? Did you buy a Sunpass at the visitor center past the FL line?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 років тому

      Can't think of anything I'd have done differently for this specific trip. It all worked out as planned. For the tolls, I just did toll-by-plate. They mailed me a bill a few weeks later.

    I've got the 2015 KTM 1290 super adventure. Great bike, but I don't find it comfortable for long journeys. Even the comfort seat is too hard after a couple of days in the saddle, and I can't find a screen tall enough to keep the wind flow clean at highway speed. It's great on the mountain roads though. What do you think of the FJR in comparison?

    • @2WR
      @2WR  4 роки тому +1

      I'm using the same sheepskin on my SA as I did my FJR. Actually find the SA to much more comfortable than my FJR was. I've been running a Puig screen on my bike for about 6 months or so now, it's plenty tall for me in the lowest position.

    That last stretch from Homestead to KW was the longest stretch I've ever been on. It just went on forever. I just came to terms with the idea that I'd have to hit water eventually. Either that FJR is extremely comfortable.. or my Wide Glide is that uncomfortable.. or you are the $@#@ man. (I heard that was the case.)
    It's funny watching from SC down through Florida. I've been down that stretch so many times that the people I bring with me on occasion are starting to complain that we go to Florida so much. (I really dig Cocoa Beach. And, of course, there's Daytona.) I need to start branching out toward the west.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  6 років тому

      I really enjoyed the stretch, maybe not from Homestead but from Key Largo to KW, but then again, perhaps I was delirious by that point. LOL, at me being the $@#@ man :)
      BTW, appreciate you going back through my catalog of videos and taking the time to comment. I forgot about a lot of that stuff and it was fun to be reminded of it. Had a quick look at your channel and once I get some time, I'm going to check out some of your stuff.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 років тому

      What bike are you coming off of?

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 7 років тому

      The 2010 Honda VFR 1200 (It's a V4 engine). I want something little more upright and more suitable for two up riding.

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 7 років тому

      It was between the Kawasaki Concours and the FJR.

    • @2WR
      @2WR  7 років тому

      I owned a VFR800 before the FJR and test rode the VRF1200 when the first came out. The FJR is definitely a more comfortable seating position and better suited for two-up riding. We took two 5k plus mile trips two-up on it and several 2k mile plus trips. Damn things are bullet-proof too.

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 7 років тому

      I picked it up last night and I have a few questions for you:
      Please keep in mind that I'm new to the FJR (always had Honda's) so I don't know the bike lol
      I got the bike from an older gentlemen who maintained it according to the owners manual, however I did notice that they (Yamaha dealerships/service) always used 20/50 oil in three different Yamaha dealerships. So if I'm going to change oil what should I use? 10/40 as recommended ?
      2nd. Question:
      Riding back home was fun but I did notice almost like a slight buzz (the whole bike) if you would and little instability almost... (at least that is how I felt). The tires are 11 months old with 800 miles on them and the tire pressure was F 34 Rear 40.
      The bike wasn't planed to the ground like my VFR 1200 always was, or maybe just because it was new to me that threw me off. I'm not sure. The suspension was set on "hard" if that matters.
      Thank you brother.
