  • This episode we are in stunning Tasmania. But can you do Tasmania justice in just 3 weeks? In Part 1 of our Tasmania trip we explore Cradle Mountain National Park, walk over the high cable suspension bridge at Tasmania's highest waterfall - Montezuma Falls and we have some fun on the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
And we stay at a stunning free camp as soon as we arrive.

Thanks Neil. We will cover of a number more in the next couple of episodes. Regrettably in a shorter trip than we’d like we have to miss a few good spots as well.

Hi David & Paula, just catching up on some of your older videos and now we want to go and see Tasmania. What time of the year did you do this trip? Looks fantastic.
    Thanx Dave

Hi. That was late Feb early March and it was great overall. Weather can be fickle in Tas at any time of the year but we booked to get there in the shoulder period after the summer but before it got too cold. Which was lucky in some respects as we had a car part delay before we could start. As we say in one of the episodes, you really do need much longer than we had - I say minimum 6 weeks (Paula says minimum 2 months) and those who have time often book 3 months. We appreciate not everybody has a long time . But noting that summer can be crazy and winter can be bitter - there really isn’t a bad time to do Tas if you’re equipped. If you have double our time period or more you can spend a bit longer at some of the good places, get more of the west coast in, spend some more time in Hobart (we had been to Hobart several times previously). But we love Tassie and will go back at some stage for a longer stay. Spirit of Tasmania is expensive with a van also so you need to spend sole time to justify that expense. Anyway, do it.

What is the gas cooker you are using? Where can we get those folding cups?

Hi. Thanks for watching and reaching out. That’s a jetboil. I love our jetboil. We have two, the more traditional jetboil flash which is best for boiling up water really fast or very basic cooking, and a jetboil stash which has a variable gas setting and slightly more squat pot / cooker. But it doesn’t have the piezo igniter (we carry a separate spark lighter for that one). Jet boil have others in the range. Check out their range by googling jetboil australia and they are sold at any number of outdoor stores in Australia including Anaconda, Tentworld or a number of online camping suppliers. We keep ours in crashpad “crashpods” in our car at all times and our one oin our day packs for longer walks. The cups are Sea to Summit pop up latex cups. We have them as part of a set of three (cup, small bowl and small plate) each for paula and I that we also keep in the car crashpods along with sea to summit lightweight cutlery sets) So we can readily take the car separate to the van and for day walks we just put what we need in day packs and put them back in the car when we’re finished. You can buy sea to summit gear in any number of outdoor outlets and direct from the sea to summit online store. But keep an eye out for specials at places like Anaconda, Macpac, or Wild Earth. We got ours on special at Wild Earth. Please note we have no affiliation with any of those outlets or brands. We love our jetboil and those sets and use them whenever we are away from the van - like our Fraser Island trip or on day walks.
