  • We have 10 or so episodes left of this series. Over the last 39 episodes we’ve seen the history of the Crisis, the events leading up to Vatican II, the aftermath of the council, and in the last set of episodes the errors facing faithful Catholics as a result.
Now we’re going to get into the response to the Crisis - the traditional Catholic movement. And we certainly can’t talk about this movement without talking about the Society of Saint Pius X. But before we start talking about the history, which we’ll do in Episode 41, we have to look at the mission.
What are the guiding principles behind the SSPX? And what led Archbishop Lefebvre to make certain decisions that he did about the organizational structure? He could have done a hundred different things. Why this?
We’re happy to welcome Father Stephen Reid to explain this now, on the SSPX Podcast.

Welcome to the Catholic Faith, Pavlus. The SSPX brings the sacraments to so many people in many different lands. Their devotion to the Traditional Mass brings so many blessings to people.

I was blessed to be taught in the 50’s by the Sisters of the Holy Ghost in elementary school. All from Ireland. On occasion, Holy Ghost priests visited and gave us lessons. I remember all of them and hold on to those memories…we learned Catechism, prayers, devotions, sacramentals plus stories of the Saints. Latin Mass Daily & confession regularly. I was also blessed to be confirmed in the “Traditional Rite” 1962. I kept my St Joseph’s Missal 1962. I struggled with my faith after Vatican II….most of my friends & class from Bishop Lynch High School have left the Catholic Church. I believe my sacraments & what I learned from the Holy Ghost Sisters & Priests (probably their prayers) that my yearning for the Tradition has forever remained in my heart & soul…After Vac II, we had no choice but Nocvus Ordo, at least, not in local parishes. I married & have 3 children (all adults now). By the time, they went to school, convents were abandoned & Catholic schools were taught by lay people only & had to be Protestant friendly plus very expensive. As much as I struggled with my faith & new Mass, I was determined to have my children Baptized & Confirmed in the Catholic Church. I did and it saddened me to realize how deluded the faith had become. In spite of it, I am so blessed that all three children have their Catholic Faith! I just wish I had known about SSPX before now. I found a Chapel recently that is 20 min away. I had no idea they had been there for 50 years! I visited a Benedictine Monastery for 2 days just to go to Traditional Latin Mass after 50 plus years. I took my St Joseph 1962 Missal! I never want to go back to Novus Ordo….I looked for Latin Mass nearby & saw Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in a little town 20 min from my house! I asked my parish priest about it, but was told that SSPX was not in union of the Church?? I ended up on the internet & have been listening to the Crisis Series by SSPX! I’m in disbelief that SSPX is not in union with the Church! I am praying 🙏🏻 for SSPX & Archbishop Lefebvre! I have not gone to the Mass at Our Lady of Fatima yet, but I visited with someone at the church & and went into the church to pray 🙏🏻. It was like coming home to a faith I had almost given up & will be attending. God Bless all of SSPX for maintaining the beautiful & Holy Liturgies of One Holy Catholic &
Apostolic Church! In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti! Amen🙏🏻

Thank God for ++Archbishop Lefebvre. Had he not created the Society this current crisis would have very few few lights of Faith left. Please continue this worthy work.

Interesting thoughts... I remember back in the 50’s we had five Priests living at our rectory and our Faithful lived in neighborhoods. The community was an integral part of our Faith, both for the Priest and the Faithful. Everything we did centered around the Mass and keeping each other on the Path.
Daily Mass!! So important back then.

I had not heard of the SSPX before Covid and I believe there is an SSPX parish about 50kilometres from where I live. I am 87 and I mourn the loss of the Latin Mass. This is from South Africa.

Its soooo true. Many of the newer attendees in the last decade or so seem to not truly understand what the FSSPX really is. It saddens me when it's just an option to them on top of their novus orso or indult Traditional Mass; they don't understand how important it os to support the priests of the FSSPX. They don't understand the unique role they play in saving the Catholic Church.

Considering Archbishop Lefebvre's connection to Africa it would be wonderful if SSPX could one day make their way to South Africa. What a blessing that would be!

Good talk, some preists they are mixed up with parish and priesthood.some say they not here to run a parish then it's better for preists to focus on Mass let the parishners take care of running the parish.

Something I think about regarding my children where the Sacrament of Holy Communion is concerned, where one daughter so far refuses to be confirmed. The eldest confirmed Novus Ordo style and if she would have been better off not confirmed like another daughter who refuses. Introducing Tradition to them came a little too late, as School influence had greatly taken hold....

The members are strictly just priests, religious sisters and religious brothers. You can join the SSPX third order. Beyond that, just start to attend an SSPX Mass center. Feel free to enroll as a parishioner once you get there. Speak to the priest about conditional confirmation. The SSPX Bishops certainly do administer the sacrament conditionally, as did Archbishop Lefebvre.

As Opus Dei was forced to sign away their rights to celebrate Traditional Mass, has the organization had a positive impact at any time in the past? How do they affect Tradition today?? 🤔

Nice talk but the question is still in the air: why are the statutes not public? I know that benedictines are selling their rule and they are happy to share it with others. Is it mandated by canonical law?
Although I am happy to go to SSPX for many years I have never heard any explanation. :(

I need help.. I've been drawn to the Catholic faith over the years, but all of the masses within an hour of me are novus ordo. I have no idea what to do.

If you are able to drive to an SSPX Mass and ask the priest about receiving instruction to become Catholic, even if it is only possible to make the long drive once a month given your finances / energy / resources, I would encourage you to go for it. I would not encourage assistance at the New Mass. If you are able to drive every 2 weeks, every 4 weeks, every 6 weeks a little longer to get to a Traditional Mass, do that. Maybe watch a livestreamed Traditional Mass, or say other prayers on the other Sundays. Courage and be assured of my prayers. In Christ, Fr. P. Franks

Hi! I don't know what you've chosen to do in the eight months since you posted. I'd strongly recommend you try driving to Mass with the SSPX. There are many of us, myself included, who drive large distances (220 miles roundtrip for me, and I know others have longer drives), but the Mass is worth the drive. If you choose to come into the Church, I'd expect the SSPX RCIA program to be among the best, if not the best.
