      Instead of bag liners you could make a stipulation, that the customer bags all their trash, save yourself the time and hassle of lazy entitled customers. Remember the customer is always right, in opinions of taste. I have a few lifting totes on route, that are oversized by city by-law, I refuse to physically pickup and tell the resident to bag everything or it's on them if it's not taken. They signed the contract bro remember that, in this industry favors become norms unless you put your foot down.
      You'll always hemorrhage money starting a new trash route, whether with older equipment repairs( you financed a trailer), learning to efficiently route the map, finding the call locations(not a real problem for you, as you know the customer personally), a bypass to seat belts in a "This vehicle stops often" sign(check local laws) and once your wife becomes more comfortable driving, you can hop out closer to the can and she could pull the trailer towards saving some walking. ✌️
      Ps: from working as a trainer, there's a lot to cover and something always get forgotten.

      Hey man , Enjoying watching your videos all the way from Australia. Those wheelie bins the way we call them are awesome in orange. I'm a garbage truck driver here and I know it's a big expense and everything and also know that your trialling things out . But I recon that a small rear load garbage truck would be awesome to have then there would be much less issues. Hopefully once you get a couple hundred customers you go down that path . Also ypu wouldn't need to go to the tip as much due to the material being compacted .

    I have a question, the county got rid of trash collection i assume a county would be the equivalent of a local council in Australia. Isn’t trash collection part of the rates. Or do Americans not pay rates.

    • @usboneman663
      @usboneman663 3 місяці тому +3

      depends on the city or county for me its in the water bill

    • @AHomelessDorito
      @AHomelessDorito 3 місяці тому +2

      What do you mean by rates? Taxes? Depends on the city/county you live in some offer a trash collection service as a part of the city/county you live in (may still have to buy cans to take part in the service) and other generally more rural cities/counties only have trash dump sites and don’t offer a trash service which is where private companies step in

    • @wmjwhite
      @wmjwhite 3 місяці тому +1

      Trash collection is usually included if you live in a city or township and paid for by city or town taxes. Rural residents that are only a county resident do not typically have trash collection included but only pay the county taxes unlike city or town residents who pay both county and city taxes. In this case, the county did not stop providing trash collection, the business that provided services to county residents, if they had a contract with the business, decided to stop providing service to that area.

      They have just recently snuck a 3rd bin in for an extra 500 that’s non opt out, but the real kicker is it’s a fogo bin and it’s done weekly, so green waste and organic product, why the general waste is now fortnightly. So it’s maggots galore as no bags are aloud in the bin. It’s upset the community because several suburbs have this new bin why the others are just on the general waste and recycling bins.

    I have a recommendation, and that is to have residents place their Can at the curb, (which I see most already do) and for you to Keep the cans at the curb after emptying rather than Rolling them up and down the property; this way if you get an automated truck Further down the road, the standards for can placement will already be set.
    Otherwise, you’d have to get out pretty often and roll the can over to the truck.
    At that point, and especially after not needing liners anymore, you’ll probably be down to 15-30 seconds a stop!

    It looks like you have a bit more capacity in your dump trailer at the end of your run. Where I live, waste companies offer a bulk pick up for a pretty reasonable price and you can basically just put out a bunch of black trash bags and they pick everything up in bill you for the extra bags. Maybe you could schedule it to pad out the rest of the capacity and make the run to the dump more efficient. You can also charge a bit of a premium because it's a one time thing.

    I live in a suburb of a major metropolitan area. I use a trash bin cleaning company one time per year at $10 per can. They have a very large truck that scoops the bin up, sprays, disinfects, and dumps any debris inside their truck so there is minimal water rolling down the drive and then deodorize/dry the bin. They provide the water from their truck and don't connect to mine, etc. HOA requires our bins stored in our garage out of sight. I opt to have 2 bins (regular and recycle) cleaned in the Fall when the temps have cooled down for the year. I used to clean the cans one time per year myself. I'm only wiling to pay a nominal amount for this service as I pay considerable for trash pick up. I am the only one in my neighborhood of 450 homes that has this service done. Trash bins are not high on the list that people care about keeping clean particularly if they are kept outside - even those with considerable discretionary income. What I'm saying is really analyze this business idea through. Trash service is a must. Trash bin cleaning service is fluff.

The tarps we had had grommets that we put bungie cords on and closed the ends of the hooks with pliers so when we rolled the tarps up the bungie cords just stayed attached to the tarp. You might convert your trailer to have a side-roll-tarp that is remote control. It might only allow you to load from one side but it also would allow you to have the top half-open or half-covered.

    Have you considered offering an upsell for recycling? My community in Florida allows putting out a 30 gallon tote worth of paper, glass, metal cans, etc. Might be able to charge more but the negative is finding a way to dispose of it besides the dump; althoigh some dumps have different areas for different material and responsibily deal with it. You could fit a gaylord on your truck to keep it seprate.

      I wouldn't say we are big enough to have suburbs. I look for neighborhoods that don't have dirt roads, are close by, don't have city service. They also need to be (ideally) a development with one road that services the houses, rather than houses placed on a main road.

    The liners are a good idea, considering how high your trailer wall is. That would wreck your back if you hand lifted every single cart up to the height of the wall. I think once you have enough profit, you could invest in a tipper system, from Perkins Or Bayne to lift and dump those carts, eliminating the liner. The whole thing could be ran off of the pre existing hydraulic system for the dump trailer.

    • @CopperCreekCuts
      @CopperCreekCuts  3 місяці тому

      The tipper idea didn't work out. Next week's video will show it.

    You should fabricate a box to hold your liners on the side of the trailer. You can save a few seconds from walking to the front. Also, pitchfork, rake/push broom, and snow shovel. Your liner is going to rip at some point and you are going to have to pick up loose trash. Save back, keep the tools in the truck so you don’t have to worry about them moving around during dumping.

    A liner is the way to go especially hauling in an open truck or trailer.
    I believe if all that garbage was loose that tarp would not keep it in. Besides all that loose garbage you would have to rinse out your trailer when you get done then you'd have that smelly messy water lingering around if you did it at your house. 🤮
    I'm sure you know this already but that bar in front of the container halfway down is actually for a lifting device.
    Until you get a lifting device maybe hinged sides would be best that way you could lower it easier to throw bags in and yet you can raise it back up when you hit the road.
    You do have a good wife there not afraid to get out and work and get her hands dirty.
    I like the color you chose for your trailer and containers it reminds me of swamp holly orange.
    Just keep plugging away and you'll be successful get rid of stuff that's not productive and concentrate on stuff that is.
    Think of it this way you're getting good exercise. There is people that pay money to go to the gym, and you take your gym with you and you're getting paid to go. 😁

    1. How are you handling this business while you have another business. It seems stressful.

      I have several part time things that bring in income. This is a new one that now consumes one of my previously free days.
      I did spend $2,000 on a manual cart tipper that you will see next week. It was the cheapest option to test an arm on a dump trailer and it showed some big flaws in that idea. At this point any money generated will go to paying off the cans (still on a credit card) and the dump trailer. After that it will just get saved for a truck (potentially another batch of cans, depending).

    Hi there! I just run into your videos on UA-cam and saw your little business growing. I must admit here in Europe it wouldn't be so easy to start a job like this, due to high regulations and the fact that primarely the trash pick-up service is run by the city hall through a company that won a tender for the entire area. The good thing about Europe is the used vehicles market that is very easy to access, thus with some googling you can go and buy yourself a used bus/truck/whatever and there are vehicles for all kinda budget. I know your business is small, but how's the used vehicles market in the US? I figure out you don't need like a big rig but there might exist smaller trucks, espacially built on pick-up trucks that can do the job. Here in Europe small garbage vehicles are based on van chassis, you can Google like Iveco Daily Garbage Truck or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Garbage Truck and you can see vehicles up to 3.5 tons that can be driven with normal license, no need for truck license. How's that in The US? I really appreciate your courage and hope your business will grow in a healthy way. Keep up the good work.

Lots of saving in the piggy bank ahead (probably two or three years at least).
