  • Dr. Dave demonstrates the top 10 categories of safeties that every pool player must learn to master. Effective defensive play is one of the main things that separates the great players from the good ones, so it is an important skill to practice. Safety categories covered include:
    Intro (0:00)
    1. Stop and Hide (0:21)
    ---- two-way shot (1:08)
    2. Roll Up and Snuggle (1:34)
    3. Equal-Separation Hide Behind Blockers (2:16)
    4. Finesse Equal-Separation Hides (2:38)
    5. Finesse Fractional-Ball Hides (3:21)
    6. Separate and Hide Against Long Rail (4:05)
    7. Come into the Line of Blockers (4:30)
    8. Thin-Hit Hide (5:17)
    9. Send Ball Straight Down Table and Hide (5:37)
    10. Kick-and-Stick Hide (6:22)
    ---- "big ball" effect (6:40)
NOTE: With the jump shot at 5m47s, I claimed that the bump of the 8 with the shaft of the cue might be a foul under some rules. However, the CB did not jump over the 8, so it is not considered an "impeding ball." However, it is a bit risky disturbing a ball that is very close to impeding a jump. A referee who doesn't have video instant replay might call this as a foul when he or she sees the 8-ball move.

Some shots you might want to put in a follow up:
    1) bank a ball near the rail with stun run through to hide the cue ball behind a ball further down the rail (grady mathews showed this shot in one of his videos)
    2) ticky shot to get a similar result as #1
    3) stick opponent on top of a ball so they only have a jacked up long shot (sometimes called a Chinese/Taiwanese safety)
    4) 2 way bank to miss short
    5) using hold up english to get behind blocker
    6) after hitting the object ball, bump a ball close to the rail with the cue vall to get it off the rail slightly to become a more effective blocker.
    7) roll up behind the side pocket tit when the object ball is on the wrong side of a side pocket (sometimes comes up, but mostly just for fun)

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  4 роки тому +3

I mostly play bar-box 8-ball, which is a run-out game, so I probably play safe only 1 in 5 games or so. A momentum-changing game-winning safety probably occurs in only about 1 in 10 games. In 9-ball, safes are played more often, and can be extremely effective when played well.

I've been working on predicting where the white will go after a shot (30 degrees with no English) and I can now see where it will hit the first cushion, however I often have problems with visualizing where it goes next. Sometimes I estimate correct but other times I am a good bit out. And that's just with 2 cushions, after that I just can't tell where I'm going to end up. Are there any tips for visualizing the path of the cue ball around the table? Thank you for your time Doc.

Great video, now safety's have been covered, perhaps a video on containing safety shots?
The kind of shots you play when there are either few or no balls ot hide behind. Damage limitation, like when it's your shot on the last ball and it is unpottable, so you have to keep distance between the 2 balls at either end of the table, or keep them on opposite short rails.

During my league game on wednesday night I had hooked my opponent had 2 of my balls over his ball sitting infront of the pocket, he was attempting to shoot his other ball at the other end of the table had his hand over the 3 balls as thats where the cue ball was, after he moved his hand and was shooting his next shot I realized my balls were out of the way and touching, he must have touched them and I didn't catch it until it was too late, I would have won all 3 of my games that night if it weren't for that, lesson learned to pay attention more. I spend as much time on a safety shot as a hard shot. A few months ago my opponent was on the 8 which was infront of the pocket, I banked my ball leaving the cue ball down table and my ball landed right infont, safe! Theres times in 8 ball I was not on the 8 and I shot the 8 ball into a cluster to ensure the opponent is in other words screwed.

One point worth noting is, if your opponent has potted more of their balls, and it's your turn, then you have a leverage using safety shots whenever you doubt if you can make the cut.

🙋🏼‍♀️Hi Dr.Dave and fellow pool players, I realize we need to know how to do safety shots, but it’s kind of a boring thing to practice. During a game I may not ever use the exact same safeties as I practiced in these example shots. Plus, I believe it’s not only important to practice creating a good safety leave, but it’s also important to know how to get out of a safety leave. So I think the best way to practice both safety situations is to play a safety game by yourself (or with someone else)where you create and then try to get out of one safety after another. I really love playing pool and I love to improve my game. However, it seems like doing boring, repetitive drills are not very fun, and don’t seem to help my game. I think setting up balls to practice a safety shot is even more boring than doing drills. So I find that when I make it more like an actual game I enjoy it much more and I retain more of the knowledge I’m trying to attain.
Dr. Dave always gives us all such great pool info in his videos. The thing is, we all learn in different ways, so I just like to find ways that I can retain more of that info so I can use it during pool games. THANK YOU! Dr. Dave😁👍

So get this dave i been changing my persinal vision center totally based on the needed shot. Like it changes depending on cut angle and or needed spin. Maybe its not changing much but the focus if dominance can switch to my left eye seeing the eclipse stronger focus sorta. I been playing way better maybe running 30% of open racks instead of 20% but idk if long term consistency is ok to change stick position under my chi. Center to between nose and dominant eye or more under my eye. I been way more precise focusing only on object ball but when i peek at q ball seems im lining up way different then trying to set on q ball then focus where to hit the object ball. Going backwards from object to q seems way better for me but when i look at q ball even a little it messes me up. Why am i running out way more not looking at thebq ball then if in do look at it on the set position it seems im lined up funny or atleast different then normal. And im having a serioud problem keeping staying concentrated hard like im not really trying hard being lazy and its become a bad habit to not try hard. Cuz when i try really hard i mess up but when i am lazy kinda im precise but then it turns into too lazy. Im having teouble finding balance of how hard i should concentrate. Concentrate and try to hard i mees up. Just playing the game do great but then get lazy cuz it seems too easy and boring to just have easy shot after easy shot. I cant explain good what i mean but im trying to. I know tangent lines and how to manipulate off of them and diff speeds impact but when i try to focus on all that stuff it overwhelms me and i mess up but whenever i just feel everything digging down into the million nalls ive hit i get crazy good results. But i want to understand what im doing. I dont always stroke the same cuz i get bored and i change the height of my chin off the ball alot. Seems to me that even the exact same shot depending on shape i need i change chin height bridge length bridge and type of stroke but i am just not consistent enough. I know i can run wide open racks and want to everytime but lazyness with concentration issues and always trying different stuff overwhelms my consistency. And finding the right pace is very hard. I am very too fast but if i try slow down too much i can really do terrible trying really hard. Maybe a psychiatrist is what i need. Tips?
