I worked for DM&E out of Waseca when I was furloughed from UP. That was in 2010. In my 11 years on the railroad, that was probably the best time in my career. This brings back a lot of good memories for me so I appreciate the work you put into this.
We definitely saw a few of those types! But, all in all, we were treated with respect by the Waseca crews. They left our camera crews alone, which is all we can ask for.
I dispatched out of Sioux Falls 2004-2008. Initials MGC or "Mighty Good Coffee",we had tons of fun with that.I still hear from some of the gang out there, I'll never forget it that's for sure.
Those Griswolds were so cool with the rotating banners. The ones in this video kept their stop signs until the entire installations were replaced with new crossing signals. And yes, those fireflies were awesome to see! Southern Minnesota is a fantastic place to watch them in late June and early July. Thank you for appreciating those details in the video.
Thank you! At the time, we didn’t know that the end was near for that line. Just happened to run into the train at Gordon while chasing a UP southbound. We’re glad that the decision was made to turn around and follow the MSWA back north...

Thank you for uploading this, loved every second of it. I was curious about that ID of the WAICE, prior to the CP takeover were the IC&E and DM&E two separate railroads?
Thank you for watching! To answer your question, yes, they were two separate railroads. Early on, the symbol for the train bound for the IC&E was WAICE. That changed to HUBRC, then HUCC (CC was Chicago Clearing) during the DM&E’s final years. When the CP took over, they began routing the trains via Winona. Symbols were changed to 488/489. Since then, they’ve been 486/487, 276/277, 470/471, and now 254/255.
You’re welcome. They were dispatched out of the same building in Sioux Falls and their operations were closely coordinated. So... you could call them close sister companies.
DM&E was a Beautiful Railroad And its Sad the CP Rail Took the DM&E Back into the CP Rail System Awesome Video of the Dakota Minnesota & Eastern ( DM&E) Railroad That is now is a Fallen Flag 💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍
I lived in Rochester Mn 1981 to 1995. I worked at Barlow’s then Napa next door, then across the tracks to Pizza Hut so I had 3 jobs with lots of exposure to the DM&E. I was working at Pizza Hut the night that the big derailment was just west of the bridge where I think it was highway 14 does an S curve going under the tracks. I don’t remember if that was 1992, 1993 or 1994? I remember the westbound train getting into Rochester with 2 or 3 locomotives and only a dozen or so freight cars and I remembered being puzzled by it. The next morning local radio stations shared that there was a derailment east of Rochester the night before. One of my uncles was on his way home to Plainview and went by the location of that derailment just before it happened.
I have dme sd40-2 their so awesome I always love this company had history like no other they had good men and women help them change the face of former millwaukee road and other roads went way make easy use traffic across Iowa and into twin city's
I grew up in and still live in Rochester. Unfortunately through much of the pre-CP takeover, I wasn't old enough to drive but luckily when I got my license, I was able to get the last few years (including 2012) of DM&E power in action. Since the DM&E glory days, many of the customers served by the DM&E have since moved on to delivery by tractor trailer instead of rail. Much of the jointed track on this line has become welded track. The Rochester coal plant has since been shut down. There has been an increase in ethanol and grain trains due to more grain and ethanol businesses established at various locations along this line and the RCPE. But now days, unfortunately, most of manifest traffic just passes through, going to and from the RCPE. Also the classic EMD power has unfortunately become a rarity on the east end of the DM&E, now that CP owns it.
Same here. I live in eagle lake and much of the traffic that was once on the Tracy sub itself has also gone down. See a lot of grain and ethanol yet today but that’s a common site on any railroad in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.
@MustangsTrainsMowers It sounds like the Silver Lake Power Plant stopped burning coal in 2013. However, it still generates steam for Mayo Clinic. From what we read, they have a contract with Mayo until 2030.
It wasn't long after this that they lowered the speed limit back down to 10 mph . From Austin to owatonna the old Milwaukee mainline stick rail couldn't take it .
@Minnesota railfanning Tough to imagine seeing trains rocking and rolling down that portion of the line at 25 mph today. The ICE completed a massive rehabilitation of the Owatonna Sub between 2004 and 2006. Lots of new welded rail on the south end, and lots of ballast and ties on the north end. Got most of the line up to 25 and 40, depending on the location.
@@Professional_Foaming No they laid the old 110 or 115 welded rail off the paynesville sub , now 136lb. welded... from lyle to Austin . my cousin was the Austin section foremen . They just swapped the rails side to side to make it last longer
Your suspicion is correct. The entire route is dark territory. The only signals found on the line are located in Goodview (junction with the former Milwaukee Road), Minnesota City (distant signal for Goodview), Mankato (on UP trackage), and Wolsey (BNSF diamond).
Hello, Petey. Those M-WAICE trains were usually handed off to the IC&E at Austin. As traffic increased, M-WAICE was replaced with train M-HUBRC from Huron to the BRC’s Clearing Yard in Chicago. That symbol later changed to M-HUCC (CC=Chicago Clearing). Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Amazing to see what the power was back then. I still wish they were around today. Darn Mayo Clinic in Rochester had to make it so DM&E could not do there power river basin project. I believe that is what caused DM&E to turn over ship to CP in the end. Would love to see the Volume where these DM&E trains ran the Tracy sub. Speaking of it, would you know what trains take the Tracy sub now here in 2022? Would like to know what ones, live close by the Tracy sub myself!
Also to note the old stick rail is still here in eagle lake for how long I do not know, CP has been working on some rail upgrades in the area in the past 2-3 years putting new welded rail in.
Thanks for info, since I do live close to this line and in fact just a couple weeks ago CP sent a empty ethanol train out to the west. Would you happen to know what the train symbol would be for those or is it still CP 254/255?
CNW abandoned the cowboy and colony line in 1992 and the Union Pacific bought cnw and operated the lines for a year then sold it to DME and then DME turned into ICE and then and now is RCPE
The Grand Trunk connected Chicago and Ontario via Port Huron, Michigan, with additional lines to Detroit and Ohio. GTW’s mainline serves as CN’s link to Chicago from the east.
