  • In this C. Vision video presentation, we feature the Progressive Rail's Minnesota operations in 2005. This era of the PGR is remembered as one of its most interesting, with a variety of classic EMD locomotives adorned in Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern colors handling a majority of the assignments. We begin our coverage with Progressive Rail's Dan Patch Line between Northfield and Lakeville, Minnesota. The railroad assigned PGR 40 (SD39) and PGR 42 (SD38-2) to this operation during the time of production. We follow two sizable Progressive Rail trains over this portion of the former MN&S mainline, with the pair of six-axle units put to good use on the line's undulating profile. In between the northbound and southbound trips, we view some switching in Lakeville at the Airlake Industrial Park, and bring you a special tour of PGR's unique rail warehouse and transload facility. We also include two scenes of CP's Northfield to Lakeville turn, documented shortly before this operation was handed over to PGR. Next, our coverage shifts to the former Chicago Great Western (CGW) line east out of Northfield, to Randolph, Minnesota. We follow PGR's Randolph train in both directions over this branch, with one of PGR's Hancock Air Whistle-equipped SW1500s handling this run. We also see the crew performing a little switching in Randolph before turning back to Northfield. Next, we take a cab ride on PGR's job to Faribault aboard one of Progressive Rail's former MN&S SW1500s, PGR 37. We'll head south over Union Pacific's Spine Line (former Milwaukee Road/Rock Island joint track) between Northfield and Comus, then over IC&E rails into Faribault. Upon arrival in Faribault, we negotiate spindly industrial trackage and switch Faribault Foods before heading back north. We then move up to PGR's operations between Rosemount and Eagan, Minnesota over former Milwaukee Road trackage, known as the "Eagandale line". As with the previous segments, we see several run-bys, as well as some switching, with a surprise appearance by a well-known father and son railfan team. To complete our coverage, we’ll tour the former MN&S High Line in Bloomington and Richfield, Minnesota, with another classy former MN&S SW1500 documented here.

My office window overlooked MNS yard in Golden Valley, now closed, so I was able to watch their operations for over 20 years. PGR still runs thru my home town of Richfield to service the cement plant in Minneapolis.

The MN&S was a neat railroad. The SOO/CP and PGR operations over the former MN&S are pretty cool too. Thanks for sharing, Cody.

The faribault segment was amazing. I used to bike alongside, climb on that 44 tonner and play around on it with my father when I was little kid, lots of good memories around that area and only saw the thing move 2 or 3 times in my life. So seeing footage of the 44 tonner in action means a lot me. I gotta purchase this disc asap

At Randolph, once upon a time I can see this train heading north to St. Paul, south to Dubuque, or east to Red Wing.

I remember seeing those STWX woodchip cars here in Rimouski and Riviere-Du-Loup around 2010, only saw them twice, about 10 cars consists both times. Always wondered why they were brought over here and where they would originally operate, as i could not find any videos of them on trains around Repap plants, even the Skeena one. Although Repap did own a paper mill along the line in Miramichi, NB , those cars came around just a couple of years after the plant was decommissioned!

I’m just surprised the PGR has not reactivated the line between Lakeville and Bloomington across the old Dan patch swing bridge, so they wouldn’t have a gap between their areas of service.

It would be great if the entire MN&S mainline could be active again. Alas, CPKC doesn’t have a need to reopen that section at the moment. We’ll see what the future brings. As for your Milwaukee Road question, we’ll look into that and respond to you on your other comment when we have the answer. We’ll have to check our archives.

Having run the old mns it was like running on a washboard up down up down hence the struggling power the grades were steep and lows low fun to run but a challenge to maintain speed 😮

The MN&S certainly wasn’t built to modern railroad standards for a mainline. But we suppose that was part of its charm. Thank you for watching and for sharing your knowledge.

The Old Milwaukee/Soo Northfield Day job . Also used to run to Faribault crown cork & seal once a week or so . The Night job was just for picking up Rosemounts cars & power on Friday nights and taking everything into St. Paul Yard . On Sunday we would cab to St. paul yard and bring two sets of power and all the cars for Rosemount road switcher and the day Northfield job . Sad how the Bottom line... pushed hard working Union Rail Roaders out of a job . Back to scab labor .

Any chance of an update DVD on the PGR, as since this filming, Cannon Falls re-opened, and the facilities at Randolph have expanded, by the looks of google maps.
Keep up the good work! Jordan, UK.
