  • Well, with the new year now under way, it's time to take a look back at what was 2016. Undoubtedly, this year will be remembered as the one where, what is, arguably, the most famous steam locomotive in the world, 60103 'Flying Scotsman', finally made her return to traffic, after many years of trials and tribulations. This wasn't the only highlight, however; there was the, long awaited, return to main line service of 46100 'Royal Scot'; 6201 'Princess Elizabeth', 34046 'Braunton' and 9466 also made their return to the main line, following on from overhauls at Tyseley, Crewe and Quainton Road, respectively. The year also saw a number of returnees on the heritage line circuit, from, both, overhauls and full on restorations. These include: 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co.', 813, 78018, 34081 '92 Squadron', 41312, 76017, 7903 'Foremarke Hall', 53808, 53809, 44422, 75014 'Braveheart', 7714 and many more.
This year also saw a number of locos bowing out of service, in need of overhaul. Including: 73129, 4936 'Kinlet Hall' and 34007 'Wadebridge'.
There have been a fair few memorable moments on the main line and on heritage lines alike: 46100, 46233 and 6201's runs over the South Devon Banks and into Cornwall; 46115 and 45699 making rare appearances in the South; 76017 and 92212's epic performances on the Pines Express recreations, during the Mid Hants Railway's autumn gala; the rare sight of two BR Black 7Fs double heading along the West Somerset Railway, and 35006 hauling load 18 along the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, to name a few!
I'd like to take this moment to thank everyone who watched and supported my videos throughout the year and, of course, all those involved with the restoration and running of those beautiful beasts that we adore so much, and the railways they run on. Without whom, none of this would be possible. Happy New Year to you all.
    Thank you.

Entry of the Evening Star at 2:46 and her gait are feast to watch. that music syncs with heartbeat. But 60163 is absolutely a tornado. She lifts the trophy. What an entry and what a speed! - Great capture. Great compilation. Thank you so much for sharing.

Nothing like the "chuff", "chuff" of a steam locomotive when the fireman has the fire tuned perfectly. That's a beautifully restored engine. And fly it can!

My late father was a signalman for 35 years,on the main line Glasgow/London. Primarily working between Shap,Tebay and Penrith in what at that time was Westmorland. Later we moved to West Cumbria where he worked on the Carlisle to Barrow in Furness line between Maryport and Whitehaven. Also working the Workington to Penrith branch line through Keswick to Threlkeld. Wonderful video, though a different region, memories came flooding back, thank you for the upload. Brian.

I love the sound of a train. It carries a haunting sound of moving into the abyss of space with no time yet time will change your course. I was a little girl, maybe three, when my life changed profoundly as I boarded the stairs and moved far away. I had no idea at the time that the train whistle would be forever etched into my life as a symbol of the family that disappeared from me. This mystical sound will be a huge part of my upcoming film, "Eugenea's Story." I can't wait to see it on screen.

The interesting thing is how smooth the trains run over the track. I'm sure it's over modern welded rail. In America, most steam locomotives run on vintage rail held together with fishplates and on questionable roadbed. There is usually a lot of sway noticeable as the train make a run by.
