That was the song I was rooting for that year (yes even over Euphoria, and yes I am Swedish so I understand the lyric). To me, it's just the most beautiful song out there and Finland's best song in Eurovision.
That's one of the reasons Finland likes Norway better than Sweden. Those frigging overachievers wouldn't know about Eurovision 0 points traumas if it bit them in the behind. (@#& Abba and their catchy tunes)
2006 is also my favourite winner of all time not only that they were Monsters but the song was catchy the peformance was epic so they should send a song like that again next year.
Yesterday (when I found your channel and started following you) I searched for a video where you react to Finnish entries and now you uploaded this video!!! What are the odds??!?! Love your channel!
The big problem for the eurovision song contest is that the best artists and songwriters don't want to have anything to do with it. Because it could be devastating to their careers. The exception is Abba but that's only because they were on a totally different level. But even they had to work hard afterwards because most people didn't take them seriously, not to mention in Sweden.
I’m so with you on the 2017 song. There are many mysteries in life but the one thing I’m most baffled about, and still can’t get over, is how Blackbird didn’t qualify. It’s in my all time top 5 eurovision songs and I don’t think anything like this will come across the contest any time soon. So sad.
I agree with most of what you say, but I feel a need to defend a bit the song from 1978. Perhaps it doesn't translate, but in this song a mother talks to her song and wishes him happiness and great love to his hart. She songs it with such a great emotion, that it makes me cry, made already when I was a child, and when it came for the first time. BTW, that year in Finland was one of those when there would have been several great songs to choose from. What a pity we couldn't send more of them. Anyway, it is true that she sang better in the Finnish preselection. I don't know why they descided to dress her in grey in the final, either. Anyway, sadly, though she was previously quite popular, Finnish public abandoned her after she was placed last in the ESC, she became alcoholic, which eventually contributed to her death.
The singer of Teräsbetoni should totally take part in the Eurovision by himself now that he has gone solo. I saw his Christmas concert live last year and I got goosebumps all the way through his performance. He's an amazing singer, which doesn't come across as well during the Teräsbetoni days.
Another great video Matt, thanks for making these. 1991 (Hullu Yö) and 2014 (Something Better) are my favourites. Along with Lordi, of course. I still have those two on my playlist and listen to them constantly. Also 2007s Leave Me Alone was a great effort, should have placed higher. That soaring “I feel like diiiieeeiiiiinnnggg” is too good.
Hi Matt! How’s it going? Just wanted to come on here and tell you how much I’m loving your content here. You should do more reactions on ESC country compilations. There are probably so many countries to touch on: Albania, Andorra (well, they only had five entries but that’s besides the point), Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Please bring back that segment! Thank you!
Truly Fenno-Swedish is Finnish language at it's best. XD But yeah, absolutely agree that it should've qualified, it's actually one of my favorite entries we've had despite usually very much not enjoying Swedish. Here though it felt so very genuine. She's singing a song dedicated to her mother, she should sing it in the language that they speak in to one another.
Thank you for this video, I'm from Finlaaand! My only disagreements are that I kind of liked ''Takes 2 To Tango'' and I totally liked Teräsbetoni XD, but it's unbelievable how much I agree with you with all the others! I would be interested to see a reaction video about all songs from Hungary or maybe Poland.
Hard Rock Hallelujah was cool. I would like to see my reaction the first time I saw Lordi in ESC :) Others entries that I like are from 1967 to 1972, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 Well, now I know that Spain it's not that only one that have sent la la la songs :) P.D. Domino was my favourite too
Love the way you react on every countries entry. Here I enjoyed most the reaction on Lapponia - Boom BOOM. Indeed one of Finland's bests still to date.
Btw, did you know that late '90s - early '00s Nightwish was chosen as Finnish representive by votes of people like around 70+% of votes but "pro" judges did veto it and someone else, who did come almout last or as last... Also I acreed about 95% with you about how those songs should have more successful! Damn good songs them all you pointed, even that one of Laura Voutilainen. Also one part why Lordi did win was that by power of Internet clobal metal and rock communities did come as one and decided that this is the moment where we stand as one, shieldwall that goes together and uses every tactics they have and gives as first truly good rock/metal song to win ESC. I remember in some international phhb forums how people where working and promoting among all nations part of this contest that max level votes did go to Lordi. Behind Lordi's victory was hard work of rock/metal fans of over half year promoting it... Also also that 2015(?) punk song was one of the best songs ever we have had as our song. Period. Quality? It's punk. Pure punk. Pure punk isn't quality. It is attitude. And that band has more attitude than 99,99999999% of all bands in world. Not because they are disable. Because to them their music is their number one thing in world. They are it. Rebel against society. Against EU. Against every thing.
My favorites: 2017 - I will never get over this NQ 2012 - same! I love this to bits, just much as Blackbird 2008 - this is just fantastic for me and I love true metal representation and prefer it to Lordi but! 2006 - I love Lordi a ton as well and always saw this as Europe taking break from schlager wins galore 2003-2005 1991 - I always loved this one 1996 - to me criminally underrated, she forgot lyrics at some point and her performance wasn't as stellar as studio version but still last is a crime for his charming song especially with Spanish horror that year. 2007 - quite Evanescence in style but imo not as good, still ennjoy it though and I'd have to listen to some oldies in full cause I don't remember them well, but I remembered 1974 and enjoy it a lot. Thanks Matt, love your reviews!
Listen 1991 (Italian). ua-cam.com/video/j0A1odEOlG4/v-deo.html My God, how can such a good song be completely destroyed by terrible Italian orchestra arrangements!?
just a note/suggestion talk after u have watched the clip, because when people who dont know the songs can actually hear them and also judge them =) still a great video
I think only in '80s, mostly after 90's they are bad, even worst from each genre (2002 and 2016 pop/soul, 2008 rock/metal, 2009 90's dance, 2010 folk and 2015 of course)
Lasse Mårtenson's song is about taking it lazy! Tee hee. As a non ESC thing let me mention that he, later in his career, composed an awesome theme song called Stormskärs Maja for a TV drama miniseries. Vesa-Matti Loiri, he's actually a pretty strong singer, hey, let me mention one nice tidbit about him. He's actually a super gifted goalkeeper in many team sports, or how do you say it, talented? Perhaps even on a global level unique in that he was domestic league level even though he concentrated on his acting career, then music, then far behind sport was just a hobby. And also as a player of cue sports. The singer from Edea (the song Aava) had a very limited voice range that week due to a flu, I guess that's a bummer. Probably if some earlier performances, like national phase or studio versions can be found those might do the entry a bit more justice. I guess the singer from Softengine (Something Better) also had some vocal problems towards the end of the spring, that might've been more due to being at a peculiar age where growing up can suddenly affect your voice suprisingly quickly.
Among others I've noticed there an Ukrainian name :) Searched in wikipedia and it's really so, Viktor Klimenko (1965, year in ESC) was born in Ukraine, but they moved to Finland, when he was an infant )))
Finland have quite a diversity in their entries. Like this country a lot! My opinion: 1961: 6p 1962: 10p Nice 1963: 4p 1964: 6p 1965: 5p 1966: 10p 1967: 5p 1968: 6p 1969: 6p 1971: 6p 1972: 10p Typical finnish sound 1973: 12p 1974: 10p 1975: 8p 1976: 6p 1977: 12p 1978: 7p 1979: 10p KatrinHelena is a legend! 1980: 4p 1981: 3p 1982: 8p Such fun! 1983: 12 p Great! 1984: 10p Cute 1985: 10p Powerful 1986: 3p Boring 1987: 12p Just brilliant! 1988: 6p Funny The laughing eyes are the things you remember 1989: 12p Finnish tango ats its best 1990: 6p 1991: 12p A bit Roxettish 1992: 6p Crazy but funny 1993: 12p Katri Helena again! Maybe because I’m odd but I like the rather different style of music that more esoteric countries such as Finland bring to Eurovision. I have a bit of a thing for Hullu yö sung by Kaija in 1991. It’s sultry but rich in its sound. It’s like a full-bodied Claret. I love her deep voice and the quite gutteral sound of the language (is this sung in Finnish or in Lapp as I gather Kaija is from Lapland?). This is a song that makes one imagine long Finnish winter nights which is helpful given is about a lonely night. It’s kind of deep and powerful.
+jezzaqc Let me give you a nice non ESC hint! Check out Kaija Kärkinen's song Rain, here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/phHI39vCHNw/v-deo.html Hullu yö is in Finnish.
I love many of Finland's songs in ESC: 1961-1962, 1964, 1966-1969, 1971, 1973, 1976-1980, 1983-1985, 1987, 1989-1991 1993-1994, 2002, 2010. My favorite is 1985, 1987 1991 & 1993.
that 1980's Song was from vesa matti loiri a well known finnish actor who's most know role was multiple uunoturhapuro comedy movies where he played a moderatly drunk husband of a strict wife and was always finding ways to get beer or to do everything easier.. once he noticed that Finland does not have a king like sweden so he pronounced himself the king of Finland
Please react to either Norway, Ireland or Russia soon ☺️ And if you decide to react to Norway(or just like ESC facts) I just though I'd let you know that Norway boycotted ESC in 1970 as a protest against the weird winner situation that happened the year before.
I think in the era when every country had to sing in its own language, the majority that had an Indo-European languages found Finnish weird and didn't like them. Though most of those songs aren't anything special. Still better than the shit that seems to win Eurovision these days. 2006 is of course over the top amazing, I still remember the Finnish qualification for that year, actually that's the first ESC I remember watching as a kid :D 1979 that's my elementary school jam in music class xD 1980 what I didn't know Loiri represented us :o he's a legend. 1981 Riki Sorsa is also a very good singer, that song though... 1984 & 1985 that's a good one. 1987 good!! 2007 I love this song. 2008 this is funny and ok/good xD 2009 I love the studio version damn. 2011 I love this one as well
Ah Finland! My favourites are 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1992, 2004, 2005 :) My all time favourite is 1980, I have an interesting video with it on my channel haha :)
I'd like to point, that though "Laiskotellen" in 1964 (time when I wasn't born yet) isn't my favourite, Lasse Mårtenson was a great composer. Listen for this song composed by him, for instance: ua-cam.com/video/x_VvtNxQmYE/v-deo.html
I'd like to address that in my opinion, Eurovision is more like a cultural thing, rather than just a song contest. I think everyone knew that Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, for example, could never win. The reason I wanted them to present Finland, was that they are so damn Finnish. They have the power of sisu, and they show it. Winning wasn't the point. The point was to show what finns are all about. And the same point goes with all Finnish contestants.
Always when Finland ends last in final (im from Finland btw) we can just think that people still liked us more than those 10-20 coutrys that didnt make it to the final 😉
The most memorable Finnish Eurovision songs for me are the ones from the 1980's (Hengaillaan, Fantasiaa, Eläköön Elämä, La Dolce Vita, Sata Salamaa). Also Lapponia and Katso Sineen Taivaan from the 1970's (I am Finnish btw). The 1990's were dreadful though.
3 good in 80's (1983 even modern), but Europe wasn't ready or just prefering shlagers. 90's song's wasn't all bad, but local orchestra destroyed the songs like-91 ua-cam.com/video/4YMzHA2ny3A/v-deo.html and-94 bad orcherstra arragement, should have use tape allowed (NOT because those outfits). Paradise Oskar was good 2011 and did stand out in semi, but got buried in final partly because performing first.
You might appreciate the 2015 entry better, if you knew, that a very conservative female Finnish politician criticized harshly previous year's ESC winner Conchita Wurst, because she was "a bearded woman", which made her "a freak", and she concluded that next thing is to send mentally handicaped people to Eurovision. And so we did. :-D
In my opinion as a Finn, most of the Finnish songs/singers in eurovision are just for Finns or very bad. I do not understand why there is so many bad songs from Finland. Finland has very good songs but usually they are just for Finns or a small audience who listens that kind of music.
Right to the point! When looking famous Finnish singers in Eurovision, their ESC entries is their worst of their career. E.g. Pave Maijanen Jamma Jamma is such an ugly Song. And he has great 'Lähtisitkö' from 80's.
I hate that "Reggae OK" song. In 1981 a song named "Ilomantsi" was a lot better, but of course it wasn't selected to represent Finland in Eurovision. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/_jiYgNZA3Rk/v-deo.html
Correction: I forgot that in 2012, the song was in Swedish and NOT in Finnish.
I should say something controversial then just to get people riled up. Something like "sounds the same to me" ;)
That was the song I was rooting for that year (yes even over Euphoria, and yes I am Swedish so I understand the lyric). To me, it's just the most beautiful song out there and Finland's best song in Eurovision.
Also the 1990 entry is in Swedish ;)
ESCunited thank you very much
Do Armenia next
Sata Salamaa from 1987 is still very well known in Finland, it's often played in clubs, and everyone sings along :D
Klassikko
Pernilla in 2012 sang in Swedish, though
Oh, that's right. I forgot.
Actually 1990 is in Swedish too
raha on vain rahaa
Yeah bc it our other nationall language

Comforting to know that Norway isn't the only country that has had ridiculously many last places..
estonia 2
And Belgium

Tyrone Somuah this is to clean the ears after listening the "toy"...
i recomend looking them up, they are amazing outside eurovision too :)
Black Bird was in the same semifinal as Portugal, so that's probably a big reason why we didn't qualify /:

ABBA kinda blew up thanks to Eurovision and Waterloo, it wasn't such a big name before
And Celine Dion!

Tipi-tii would be "chirpy chirp", bird noises, in English. While it's still not a real word, it's not completely meaningless lalala either.
The singer of Teräsbetoni should totally take part in the Eurovision by himself now that he has gone solo. I saw his Christmas concert live last year and I got goosebumps all the way through his performance. He's an amazing singer, which doesn't come across as well during the Teräsbetoni days.

2006:"Claps"
Lol me too, I love Lordi
2006 is EPIC
2012 it's such a SHAME! Should've qualified. SAME for 2017.
Someone has to be the last. And Finland is often that "someone" but that won't bring us down ❤
Maybe because I’m odd but I like the rather different style of music that more esoteric countries such as Finland bring to Eurovision.
Taurwathwylth Thanks for the link and the answer to my question. Really enjoyed the song in your link!
Watching this was a torture... The jury never listened to a popular opinion when choosing for an artist. Aaaanyways, greetings from Finland! 😂
Paradise Oskar should have ranked better. Sure the show wasn't as flashy as the others, but I actually liked the song and more simple backrounds
I love many of Finland's songs in ESC: 1961-1962, 1964, 1966-1969, 1971, 1973, 1976-1980, 1983-1985, 1987, 1989-1991 1993-1994, 2002, 2010. My favorite is 1985, 1987 1991 & 1993.
that 1980's Song was from vesa matti loiri a well known finnish actor who's most know role was multiple uunoturhapuro comedy movies where he played a moderatly drunk husband of a strict wife and was always finding ways to get beer or to do everything easier.. once he noticed that Finland does not have a king like sweden so he pronounced himself the king of Finland
also he is know for succseeding in everything he does including trying heavy weight boxing for the first time and knocking out the current champion
uuno turhapuro aka uno bumcreek
2012 one of my all time favs , lilting waltz like delight
Please react to either Norway, Ireland or Russia soon ☺️
And if you decide to react to Norway(or just like ESC facts) I just though I'd let you know that Norway boycotted ESC in 1970 as a protest against the weird winner situation that happened the year before.
2011 I love this one as well
Ah Finland! My favourites are 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1992, 2004, 2005 :)
My all time favourite is 1980, I have an interesting video with it on my channel haha :)
I'm really sad that they haven't sent Nightwish to the Eurovision... :,(
2011 da da dam was my favourite of all time it is so sweet
I'm from Finland and we won Eurovision in 2006 I think but Sarah Alto should have won 2018
Excellent review. I think Finland’s best singer is Tommi Soidinmäki, whose new CD is great. He should sing Kartta for Eurovision 2019. Awesome
Kiva ku muistan yli puolien laulujen sanat ulkoo
I was just abut to comment on the 2012 song that it was in Swedish and I saw the first comment
I like the old ones more 😄 Fantasiaa, Lapponia, Hengaillaan etc. They have better feeling in those songs 😊😄
Markku Aro is just BEATIFUL.
Greetings from Finland ;)
I love Pernilla.
Do yugoslavia, i know it will be a long video after they split up, but they have alot of interesting ones through out the years!
2012 - the song was sang in Swedish
Hard Rock Halleluja is definetly my alltime favorite Eurovision song
2012 was in swedish, some finnish people speak swedish
Vesa Matti Loiri is a national treasure in finland
Finlands entry in 2015 was just super weird.
Saara should have won Eurovision 2018! Her song was so good and catchy!
I just wanted see your reaction to Monsters because I love it (and I LOVE Saara). 😂
Btw I birthed 2006 when Lordi won.
In 2000 Finland had Nightwish in the national final... but no.
I loved 2009, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018 ❤❤❤❤❤
Little advice for the future. Shut up for a while before you start commenting the song. Trying to listen what you are commenting but cant.
5. 2010
4. 2007
3. 2014
2. 2011
1. 2006
1979 was one of the best songs
i hope saara alto will perform again in eurovision later :-) she can do it with a great song :-)
JaRiS993 Apoyo lo que dices. Saara Aalto en ESC 2020
Saara aalto on paska. Joo pakko haastaa riitaa.
There's no fear of that! Always something new usually bad experiment for Finland. :)
Came for lordi but I enjoyed the vid 😀
Why the hell did we send Waldos people?!?! XD
That 2012 song was not in Finnish but in Swedish.
Finland should put more rockbands into Eurovision, Nightwish is a good example
U should pause the video while you are speaking. It’s annoying when u can’t hear the singers/the songs but you are talking about them
i still think queens or domino would of had a more wide appeal
Me watching this at 2020 from finland. Yes i am finish
Finland Should of been in the top 5 in 2017 .
Kirka and Sonja are my favorites
14:26 That transition! :D
I hate that "Reggae OK" song. In 1981 a song named "Ilomantsi" was a lot better, but of course it wasn't selected to represent Finland in Eurovision. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/_jiYgNZA3Rk/v-deo.html
I feel IT s comming, my country s turn to react it
