This is what every kid here had in the 90's. It even came in weird colours like yellow and purple. This brings back so many memories, i am so high on nostalgia atm lol
It's a FAMICOM clone, most known as Famiclone. It could run original Famicom cartridges, as the "yellow" clone cartridges too. In my country (Hungary) it is a really common unit, could be found complete boxed units for cheap at chinese or flea markets for about GBP 10-14. Loose ones are cheaper. There are 2 or 3 kind of package versions.
The "High Grade Multipurpose Use" text appears on the original Japanese version of the mega drive on the shiny plastic circle surrounding the 'dome' of the cartridge port. It's printed on the right hand side of the power LED. It also has "AV Intelligent Terminal" printed on the left.
This was the standard gaming system in Romania in the 90's, everybody had one, who knows how many they sold all over the world but this could be the best selling gaming system of all time.
Back in the day I had a friend that owned this model. It worked pretty much ok. I never thought it was a fake, I thought it was a japanese model! OMG the insides are so compact! Good work there chinese!
Hi I just noticed this video! Replacing the voltage regulator (LM7805) will probably fix this thing. Then you can use an original Mega Drive 1 power supply to boot it. (or any 9V 800mA with center negative) power supply. I have a similar clone (with the SM801-A1 chip) and I must say it's pretty good. I removed the onboard 4 mode switch, lifted the right legs of the chip from the PCB and soldered them to 2 other toggle switches. Now I can switch between 50/60Hz with one switch and change language from English to Japanese with the other switch. Timing on this thing is great and it sounds pretty good. I know for a fact the SM801 chip also has the signals for RGB video on it, but the manufacturer of the clone(s) never hooked up those pins. I am planning on doing the "RGB mod" on mine and also true stereo output. the RGB mod makes the SM801-A1 clone compatible with the 32x :)
It's not a famiclone, it's a Mega Drive clone and it plays Mega Drive/Genesis games. You can see the type of processor it uses at 5:09 (SM801-A1). It's basically a Mega Drive on a chip and the same processor found in other common Sega clones such as the Mega Drive X or Sedaa. Another UA-camr by the name of HPZeta does an unboxing and teardown of a very similar clone if you're interested.
hope you get it working man! I got a Famicom clone a few weeks back, and luckily it worked. Its amazing the effort they went to to print all the Sega logos as well as embossing the Sega logo on the underside......
I just love your xbox 1 , the mods are really nicely done & have not taken away from the stock look with garish colors & blinky lights, really nice,I wish h I had the knowledge & skill to mod one of mine..I still find it a rip off that ebayers etc are charging £100 still for a box with just XBMC on it..
By the way, SM801-A1 is pretty good chip. Stereo sound, RGB output, many settings: PAL/NTSC, 50/60hz, regions. It even supports power base converter. One con is that expansion slot is not supported
Oh i have a working one of this ones i thought it was legit, its not like i cared, i have it since i was a kid so i love it edit : also i dont have those swtiches were the mega cd port should be
Cool clone. I've seen something similar before that looked real until I noticed it had no Sega CD slot. Not sure about the real Japanese Mega Drive 2 but I have a Japanese Mega Drive (original) and it says that weird "multi purpose high grade use" stuff on it too. So that's were they got that from it might be on the real Japanese MD2 like it is on my MD1.
"High Grade Multipurpose Use | Intelligent AV Terminal" was the Japanese equivalent to the "High Definition Graphics | Stereo Sound" printing on the very early revisions of the model 1 PAL Mega Drives and North American Genesis systems (minus the "Stereo Sound")
High Grade Multipurpose Use, I think all objects fall under that description if you intend to hit people with them. ^_^ From what others are saying it was common in Russia, I'd say it would be better to have a knockoff Mega Drive than not have one at all. Nice bit of history you got there, I hope you can get it running some day. :)
I do not trust cheap chinese rip off, especially if they plug into the wall! I bought several 6-button genesis controllers, which were cheap chinese rip offs, and half of them malfunctioned and none of them were wired the same.
These were common in Romania back in the day, except they're not Sega, they're NES clones, even though they're shaped exactly like asian megadrive 2s. I actually have an asian megadrive 2, and it looks quite similar. You can tell the difference by counting the pins on the cartridge connector. The 3 boards inside were a RF modulator, a small board witht the cartridge connector and a black blob chip on board, a ribbon cable going up to the controller board, and the controller board, with power and reset. The plastic was very cheap. I actually have two of them, but they don't work. We also had the yellow cartridges, very similar to famicom games, but most of the time chip-on-board with the black epoxy blob, and I'm pretty sure nowadays that they were cloned as well.
I have it boxed and it has inserts and everything, even the address of Sega. It was just a cheap-to-make Mega Drive for the Asian market. I can post a little video when I have time.
SEGA must've either outsourced the production or something, because I have pretty much identical case in my hands, but the finish and the print are high quality. The mainboard has all the features and looks quite high quality as well. The reset button, for example, is none of that cheapo stuff. Most of the chips are sensibly marked as SEGA... There must've been a proper version that looked the same or at least a very advanced clone. All the caps are marked as Rubycon and nearly all chips as made in Japan.
@ZrazorRozenstrauch European versions of the games (& system) are called Mega drive & they often have multiple language text on because E.U uses the same carts (PAL)
Very cool mate, there's loads and loads of those clone systems about, there's a guy on here who collects them (can't remember his name though). Real shame you can't get it running but still a cool item to own :)
I bought one of those on a market on vacation in Hungary in the late 90s. It was also broken. They exchanged it and the second one worked. The games were 8bit clones of NES games.
My MegaDrive 2 clone has the expansion unit. I guess my clone is more advanced. But when the PlayStation came we never saw clone systems like this anymore that looks and plays exactly like the real stuff.
As a clone its best thing that was in Russia. Original earlier SMD clone (I have one, that was buyed in August 1998 (or 1999? I cant remember). It have regionlock switch and it can launch Virtua Racing (not x32 version). Newer clones cant launch it. And it have bigger circuit board.
It is 100% a clone console. It has been made to LOOK like a Japanese Mega Drive. I even mention this in the video @ 1:25. Also please tell me when you think Sega removed the Sega CD edge connectors in favor of region lock bypass and language select switches!? In the video I even show the clone's cheap and nasty internal circuitry with its SM801-A1 (Mega Drive on a chip). If you're still convinced this is a legit Japanese Sega MD then the only one with bad judgment or improper research is you.
When I was a kid, I had one game, Columns II, that said "Mega Drive" on the front, which confused the hell out of me because it was clearly a Sega Genesis game. It also had the game's description blurb written on the back of it in like 6 different languages.
yeah, vovan 145 is right, there were quite a lot of these units in the post soviet contries in mid 90's. but i don't think it's a bad thing that not many could actually own the original megadrive. after all, the only adventage of the original over the fake is that it has slot for connecting it to mega cd. but, from other hand, even some fake ones(early revisions) had that slot, plus they don't have region lock, usually, so you can play games from any region.
it was on 1998 when i was able to buy this for only 1500 pesos in the philippines with a free 6-in-1 game cartridge (sunset riders, bare knuckle, sonic the hedgehog 3, jungle strike, battletoads, and the very hard ecco the dolphin. i enjoyed playing it but the problem is that these units' controllers doesn't last long. i was able to replace my controllers 6 times within that year in order to finish ecco before i stopped playing and decided to donate it to an orphanage
1:27 yea this is the Japanese Mega Drive 2, I bought this version when I was in Japan some years ago boxed and mint and wouldn't part with it even if family members were tied to a train track lol, this fake one you have does look similar though but the writing on my genuine one is quite a sharp white, Jap MegaDrive 2 is cool it puts our UK version in the shade in terms of looks and the original box is very funky, I like the big "2" they used on the console it's self
I have such a console with exactly the same chip board, it has been working for about 10 years, it runs all the cartridges I have, licensed and not licensed, there is also an original console with red buttons)
Dunno about late european SMD2 case, but Asian PAL console looks exactly like fake one but way better quality. That's why it's better not to buy anything on eBay that got blurry photo. Well, unless you buy it just for spare parts for a very small price, like £5 in this case.
airthrow PAL is the dominant analog broadcast system. For example Soviet Union and then Russia used SECAM but commercial VHS tapes since 80s were in PAL, and AFAIK there's no such thing as SECAM VideoCD or DVD, so Russia must be listed as PAL/SECAM country. And don't forget about Australia. And some asian countries used NTSC, most - PAL segaretro.org/Mega_Drive_consoles_in_Asia
St33lR0b0t I had no idea PAL was used in China and asia...my experience with Asia is Japan and the Philippines, both NTSC countries. Thanks for the info!
There are two knock-offs using the Japanese Mega Drive 2 case : this one, which is probably a Famiclone, and an actual Mega Drive 2 clone (which I had in the late nineties). The Mega Drive 2 clone was 100% percent with everything I tried on it (pirate and original cartridges - but I didn't have Virtua Racing back then), had it's MegaCD 2 port and behaved identically with a 'normal' one as far as I could tell. It's PSU failed at some point and didn't look like a normal Mega Drive PSU, I don't think it had any Sega branding, don't really recall. In Romania these clones were somewhat common back then, but they're really hard to find nowadays.
NK0d3R Sorry, i know this is a late reply. The main chip in this clone is an SM801, which is basically a Mega Drive on-a-chip, so this fake would play Mega Drive\Genesis games if it worked (I'm kind of glad it's not a Famiclone).
Back in 1995 some Taiwan-made clones were actually better than original, like had both working expansion port and region switches, larger capacity caps and headphone amp with a good quality. But they had high quality large PCB with a lot of components, one clone i got even had original Sega chipset. Today's clones are utter crap.
I am confused because wiki says only MD1 and Genesis. From another side some sources note MD2 as redesign verison with black buttons. However there is same with red buttons that called Malasian version or MDII Europe (PAL) version. I have one but it is origin of China. I thought it is fake but Internet specifies Chinese ltd was Japanese Sega licensed branch in 90s. Is it true?
My guess is the GOAC simply died. or maybe the crystal oscillator is not good anymore? I had a NES clone where the games starting going faster than they should have, I think the cystal for the clock speed in my NES clone went bad.
The place where I live it is even hard to get your hands on such counterfeit consoles let alone getting original ones without pouring money madly. Well, I have one of this counterfeit. Controllers are not so good but I got used to it after playing with it for while. The computer part gives incorrect sound output for certain games at certain stages. Now that I have the console a new problem stands now...Darn game cartridges......They are not easy to find in where I live..
Not all of these Sega MD2 are fake, I think it depends on market region. The original you have is EU, same like that but with black or gray buttons is US (Genesis), and the one like your fake is JP. I have MD2 looking like your fake one, but my printing on the console is much sharper and it does have Sega CD dock connectors, and like your fake also have red-purpleish door and no led light ;)
I suppose even if it doesn't work all that well, you could use it for replacement parts. The case looks nice, and I'm sure that cart slot could work with something.
Does your clone have built in games ? I have a similar Chinese clone that has built in rom hacks if you do not put a cartridge. looks identical to yours.
Were you trying to say that American people don't get fake crap off Ebay? Even Best Buy stores sell fakes once in a while, exactly what happened to the guy who got a fake IPad from Best buy not too long ago.
***** k i found out mine wasant fake my was japanese version wich looks like this but japanese version console was with some game extra packs :/ strange thing japanese version looks like chinese :/ there was a british one to :/ but with red caset insert slot doors :/
OH MY GOD!!! I just noticed I wrote I had European. I Meant I did not have European tho. Funny thing is This fake sega genesis ran better than the originals XD
i had a clone version of sega genesis 2 that was identical to the original except that buttons was black and obviously, has 3 boards (parts) inside instead one big chip board
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!! My childhood has been ruined!!! My mega drive was.. a... fake clone???????????? I still have it and it works properly! No man no way...
WOW We in Bulgaria too ! I used to play it with my bigger brother, back in 2001. It costs in our contry like 25$. The joysticks came with 6 buttons. We have to play bootleg cartidges too. We dint know until 2012, we played a fucking fake shit !
I got one of these. Without fake expansion bay. Friend gave it away. Needed to replace cheap switches, and it works now, it had random resets earlier (bad reset button). Mine looks even cheaper inside, and doesn't have fake serial numbers and so on. But controlers are broken- directionals dont have all directions anymore. And video output is not sending any signal for some reason, only bad rf video. Yours may be not getting correct power on board, or bad caps on it. Check voltage reg output.
@RetroGameTech Pfff...Sega Mega Drive is still popular in Russia. When I was 5 (10 years ago) my parents gifted to me "Sega Simba", Mega Drive in PSX like shell, it worked good and even had region switcher! :D
Hi dude. First of all, I don't think this is a cheap chinese copy or derivate. Just go to Google, write List of variations of the Mega Drive and click first result. Sega have produced a three versions of this console: 1) Mega Drive II: japanese version with white and blue button 2) Mega Drive II: european (PAL) version with two red buttons 3) Genesis II: american version with two black button. I use in my childhood a japanese version and play games in yellow cartridges.
Yes, it's a real clone and it's realy intresting. Even in clone consoles country Lithuania I never seen Sega clone like this!;D I do experiment with klones in my video, and some of these working fine even with Mega CD'S.
right, so it was based off a real model. inside it's just a system-on-a-chip. the real models are much more complicated and don't have DIP switches on the inside like that one does. did you watch the video at all?
Lol I also own the clone. But the power cable is broken :(. But it worked perfectly back in the day. I remember playing Shinobi, Sonic 2 and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker :D
I love sega megadrive so much, last time i tried buying it again, tried to remember when i was young to bring back good memories, it could not enjoy it that much, lol, why, because the controler got small wire, and i m used to play ps3 and 4 now with a wireless controller, now i need to sit close to the tv to play sega, lol, perhaps i need to buy sega wireless controller to enjoy my megadrive.
You make a comparation with a copy from japanese version with a original europe version, so many people are thinking all japaneses are fake because grey and blue buttons and the pink door. The original japanese is really more light that europe console, the only diference between original japan with this chinese are inside.
I have a similar clone with similar motherboard and wavy connector pieces of plastic. I have a question. Can this type of clone possibly connect to Sega Cd addon?
i had this japanese design but I'm not sure if it was a fake or not. because all games played correctly and you would never know it's fake until you actually compared the circuits. and the cartridges my father bought me looked original, unlike all those crappy plastic yellow cartridges for Famicon clones with "9999 games in 1" bullshit. and it never broke, i don't have it now because I lost it so I can't play it anymore and see if it's fake or not not to ruin my childhood i'm going to believe it was legit :)
these cost $30usd online free world wide shipping had 368 games on it but most are repeated there is only like 30games on it but it runs all games fine all carts i have worked great on it also those switches are for changing it from pal/ntsc and 50/60
i have spent a fucking all my age thinking i have the original sega mega drive 2 ... but now you destroyed my childhooood hahahahah...anyway i played tons of games on it and it was great never says....aaaak
I actually owned the exact same model it plays Japanese nes games, sometimes it also comes with some generic ones built in, if you have a controller for it the x, y, z act as turbo buttons the c and z buttons act is if your pushing a and b simultaneously.
I just got one from my 13th birthday, my cousin gave it to me but idk what year he got it, (so did they make it for the Europeans or Japanese) overall it’s a good system but I wish it was region free
that chemical scent has always been awesome! it reminds me my childhood.
The thing with clone consoles is that they are actually pretty interesting sometimes
Both are original I have used them in 1999, and both was playing 16bit cartridges without any problem.
Me too man but I think its not a fake console .
This is what every kid here had in the 90's. It even came in weird colours like yellow and purple. This brings back so many memories, i am so high on nostalgia atm lol

Wrong. SM801-A1 is a GOAC, not an NOAC.
These were huge in Eastern Europe...had one as a teen. It had Nes games in it
me too... oh, the memories
@Useful Things yea ours were known as
ending man terminator and we had this one too same one from video
Loving that Sega stack on the left side. Add-ons...
+treespunk The stack is now ruined by the region code switch.
The "High Grade Multipurpose Use" text appears on the original Japanese version of the mega drive on the shiny plastic circle surrounding the 'dome' of the cartridge port. It's printed on the right hand side of the power LED. It also has "AV Intelligent Terminal" printed on the left.
In Russia at 90-th we can buy only clones. Every child had sega's clone :D. Sorry for my English.
This was the standard gaming system in Romania in the 90's, everybody had one, who knows how many they sold all over the world but this could be the best selling gaming system of all time.
nice black Dreamcast.
Back in the day I had a friend that owned this model. It worked pretty much ok. I never thought it was a fake, I thought it was a japanese model! OMG the insides are so compact! Good work there chinese!
Yeah I don't think it's a clone

I just love your xbox 1 , the mods are really nicely done & have not taken away from the stock look with garish colors & blinky lights, really nice,I wish
h I had the knowledge & skill to mod one of mine..I still find it a rip off that ebayers etc are charging £100 still for a box with just XBMC on it..

Cool clone. I've seen something similar before that looked real until I noticed it had no Sega CD slot. wow thats crazy! lol!
i love how you have the black version of all the consoles.. your set you looks so neat! : )
I got my one for 25 dollars and it was not used, works perfectly and plays all genesis and mega drive 2 games.
That's what I call a good deal
+The Zundra LOL. I will call it a good deal too. The real Genesis is much more expensive and rare.
High Grade Multipurpose Use, I think all objects fall under that description if you intend to hit people with them. ^_^ From what others are saying it was common in Russia, I'd say it would be better to have a knockoff Mega Drive than not have one at all. Do yoy believe that the at games one is even smaller

I almost bought that clone this video saved me thanks.

Honestly if the title didnt say its a clone i would think its the genesis used in those indian commercials.
I clicked expecting this to be a Famiclone, but it seems this is actual a MegaDrive clone. Really odd.
There are two knock-offs using the Japanese Mega Drive 2 case : this one, which is probably a Famiclone, and an actual Mega Drive 2 clone (which I had in the late nineties).
The pink cartridge slot should give it away that it's a clone.Otherwise it looks almost the same as the orginal Megadarive2/Genesis 2 model.
I never saw this video, nice pickup even if it's broken, just for novelty's sake. I want one now.
Is it true?
@digitalblasphemy1100 presumably, it's region switches. tho, usually, there're on the bottom of console, not inside of it.
Hey RetroGameTech, eBay has more of these listed, they're all faulty but you could try to swap some parts and try to get at least one of them working.
Dude. He opened it. You can see the inside is totally fake. You can actually read the part number on the fake Chinese GOAC chip.
Believe it or not, this is not a knockoff. It's an Asian version licensed by Sega.
:'( I HAD THIS THING I TOUGHT IT WAS REAL GENESIS :'( but it worked and played origanal games wtf?! DX
***** k i found out mine wasant fake my was japanese version wich looks like this but japanese version console was with some game extra packs :/ strange thing japanese version looks like chinese :/ there was a british one to :/ but with red caset insert slot doors :/
+aceofgaming21 all asian mega drive is the same
OH MY GOD!!! I found out that I had both fake and a real genesis since I had 3 of them XD all model 2's I did not have European tho
aceofgaming21 LOL
OH MY GOD!!! I just noticed I wrote I had European. I Meant I did not have European tho. Funny thing is This fake sega genesis ran better than the originals XD
В России, это самый распространённый клон конца 90-х. У самого стоит такая, что удивительно - до сих пор работает. :)
i had a clone version of sega genesis 2 that was identical to the original except that buttons was black and obviously, has 3 boards (parts) inside instead one big chip board
and had the expansion port
the setting jumpers was to change from PAL to NTSC and overseas
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!! My childhood has been ruined!!! My mega drive was.. a... fake clone???????????? I still have it and it works properly! No man no way...
WOW We in Bulgaria too ! I used to play it with my bigger brother, back in 2001. It costs in our contry like 25$. The joysticks came with 6 buttons. We have to play bootleg cartidges too. We dint know until 2012, we played a fucking fake shit !
Oh, right. I've seen a famiclone before, which looks like an exact replica of the Mega Drive II. I though this would have been a similar model.
Sega have produced a three versions of this console:
1) Mega Drive II: japanese version with white and blue button
2) Mega Drive II: european (PAL) version with two red buttons
3) Genesis II: american version with two black button.
I use in my childhood a japanese version and play games in yellow cartridges.
Whats the device plunged into the top of the 32x in the background?
I love sega megadrive so much, last time i tried buying it again, tried
to remember when i was young to bring back good memories, it could not
enjoy it that much, lol, why, because the controler got small wire, and i
m used to play ps3 and 4 now with a wireless controller, now i need to
sit close to the tv to play sega, lol, perhaps i need to buy sega
wireless controller to enjoy my megadrive.
You make a comparation with a copy from japanese version with a original europe version, so many people are thinking all japaneses are fake because grey and blue buttons and the pink door. The original japanese is really more light that europe console, the only diference between original japan with this chinese are inside.
ha I'm surprised all the chip labels aren't sanded off.
I had a fake.. You just ruined all of my childhood.. The logo and all was just bllshitin' ? : D oh,well..thanks for the video !
Take out the boards and look for burned spots.. brownish areas and if u have a multitester you could try and track down the bad paths
my god, I have this thing since I was a kid and I have no idea of this being fake D:
Yeah, that thing's a famiclone, which plays Famicom games.
I have a similar clone with similar motherboard and wavy connector pieces of plastic. I have a question. Can this type of clone possibly connect to Sega Cd addon?
in Iraq we have it for 10 dollars :D
i honestly thought i was playing an original system :\
damn Chinese
i had this japanese design but I'm not sure if it was a fake or not. because all games played correctly and you would never know it's fake until you actually compared the circuits. and the cartridges my father bought me looked original, unlike all those crappy plastic yellow cartridges for Famicon clones with "9999 games in 1" bullshit.
and it never broke, i don't have it now because I lost it so I can't play it anymore and see if it's fake or not
not to ruin my childhood i'm going to believe it was legit :)
Oh My sweet St. Jude, God and all those I pray to.
these cost $30usd online free world wide shipping had 368 games on it but most are repeated there is only like 30games on it but it runs all games fine all carts i have worked great on it also those switches are for changing it from pal/ntsc and 50/60
i have spent a fucking all my age thinking i have the original sega mega drive 2 ... but now you destroyed my childhooood hahahahah...anyway i played tons of games on it and it was great never says....aaaak
but does it taste as bad as a Nintendo switch cartridge?
I actually owned the exact same model it plays Japanese nes games, sometimes it also comes with some generic ones built in, if you have a controller for it the x, y, z act as turbo buttons the c and z buttons act is if your pushing a and b simultaneously.
I just got one from my 13th birthday, my cousin gave it to me but idk what year he got it, (so did they make it for the Europeans or Japanese) overall it’s a good system but I wish it was region free
Interesting this clone plays megadrive and genesis cartridges. Irony of the fake!
It doesn't matter.. you got to play all the awesome games all the same! They all worked didn't they? ;)
