I feel so bad for Nicola Brooks. All she did was make a post of support to a contestant on some show and she got harassed and doxxed by some crazy ass people online… I hope she’s doing better
She didn't make a mistake (As WWS says), the people who attacked her did. She shouldn't feel any shame about it or like she did something wrong, because she didn't.
One of the most disgusting "trolling" efforts I've ever seen was the harassment of Jessi Slaughter. She literally got her life ruined because people thought it was funny she was SA'd by Dahvie Vanity (who is now a well-known predator) at age 11. EDIT: There are people saying people were making fun of her because she was "cringey" and "overdramatic" or whatever. She was still literally 11 years old and full-grown adults were harassing and bullying her.
Nobody thinks sexual assault is funny, they laughed because they thought she was an overdramatic kid who was lying about a famous guy to get attention and didn't take her seriously because of it. A lot of kids lie on the internet for attention, it's not that far fetched. When her dad reacted the way he did on camera, it painted a picture of a typical uneducated, dysfunctional family which at the time made them a low hanging fruit for memes and virality. Anyone who has spent time on the internet knows it's stupid to show weakness or share serious stuff with strangers and unfortunately she had to learn that the hard way.
Kinda ironic that Om Prakash, the guy who (presumably) is the original Pakalu Papito has more talent, skill, and experience than any of those trolls impersonating his likeness and making fun of Indians like him.
Recently, there was a Nicki Minaj stan/troll who flew out to Phoenix, Arizona from LA to confront a Cardi B stan at his home after getting into an argument with him on Twitter that night. He also live streamed the whole thing even as the police showed up. The back and forth between the two was as unintelligible as you'd expect. This timeline is insane... EDIT: It was actually a Dua Lipa stan lol.
Andras is a legend. He singlehandedly made the internet a greater place. it's weird that people see a pained expression cause i see there's some form of Love in his eyes, like he sees his highschool sweetheart in her most beautiful dress.
I see a bit of both, like it could be a guy who’s tearing up happily over something or it could be a guy who’s smiling awkwardly 🤔 Not so much “pain” tho
I feel like his expression is so unique that it lends itself to several interpretations depending on the caption and that's what makes it so special. He can look distressed, disgusted, awkward, about to tear up from happiness... His expression is a whole ass spectrum
Gotta love him leaning into it and getting good things from it. he made countless people happy, and was able to use that to do good things for himself.
He was in front of a photographer for the stock images taken of him. I think the lack of authenticity of his smile is why people associate his image with hiding internal conflict.
I've met Hide the Pain Harold once in Budapest. He is absolutely wholesome and kind person, took photo with me and told me a story how he enjoyed a trip to the country I am from. It was so great moment that I will remember my whole life.
This is why it's SO important to make sure your personal information does not go online. There are some truly horrible people out there who will use them to ruin your life for NO good reason. These ''trolls'' have no conscience or empathy.
Fr I gotta cousin who posts EVERYTHING on Facebook from her morning prayer (like dude it's obvious u trying to mask ur actual lifestyle and it's not a Christian way of life) to the location (address and everything) checking in from the gynecologist to picking up her grandkids from school ( location and all) like dude with all the dudes ur playing ur gonna piss the wrong one off and he can easily steal ur identity and troll TF out of her or worse...
There is a difference between trolls and criminals. People that hack other peoples accounts or steal the identity of people to incriminate innocent people are criminals. People should start calling them for what they are.
And dude was 39 years old doing that shit. Like??? Grow tf up, do something worthwhile in your life. To add to that, to think that one of those degenerates was a cop as well, is just mind boggling yet also somehow not surprising. Were both these men - I mean _boys_ - also chatting up children in a sexual manner? If so, they should’ve been slapped (with charges, though I’m not complaining if they physically were) for that, too. Just ridiculous that these people out there keep caping for celebs - either major or minor, who’ll never even know they existed.
@@aedes947 From what I've seen, trolling is more passive, but cyberbullying is more targeted and relentless. They can overlap, but they're not synonymous.
18:09 These people aren't internet trolls but impersonators. Trolling is supposed to be funny or sarcastic and the comments of the troll have to be clearly a joke even if the troll is trying to piss someone off. The people who he mentioned in this video are harassing people and impersonating them not trolling. Nothing is funny about ruining people's lives.
Notice how most trolls are almost always 30 year old men and women who have nothing better to do with their lives? But they wanna keep blaming kids for not being able to pay attention or be nice? Hmmmm….

I was a victim of an internet harassment campaign a while back. I have to say, the psyche of trolls is interesting. One has to seriously lack self-esteem to make it their life's mission to ruin the lives of complete strangers
@@aedes947 I would generally agree- there is something about Internet culture which lends itself to such behavior, although the sociological aspects of this aren't researched much
Uh, shouldn't the people trying to make the woman look like a pedophile, get charged with something related to that? Because they're the ones actually perpetrating the crime. THEY were the ones talking to minors.
Whoever that Nikki Wright guy was got an extremely light sentence. Only 22 weeks? He ruined that woman's life, and put her through some bullshit. That's just wrong.
These stories just really showed how sad some people's existence is. Like imagine living a regular life, having a family and friends and a job but then in your spare time you spend it online and abusing a random person. Imagine finding out your friend or family member was doing that. Wavy described it correctly when saying Nicola's stalker was pathetic.
I still see hide the pain harold stock images used by various businesses. A friend once send me a video of a sign promoting a fitness center, one of the stock images on that sign was a picture of Harold doing some workout. I also once spotted a pic of Harold, holding a video game controller, in a gamestop.
This shit is so goofy. Like how can you be an adult and make fake accounts to ruin a strangers life? You have to be such a weirdo to do something like that.
1. The guy stalking Nikola is INSANE. 20+ accounts on two different platforms?!?! 2. Hide the pain Harold is the spirit of so many in this land...he must be protected.
In 2021, BuzzFeed News won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for its coverage of the Xinjiang internment camps as a part of China's campaign against Uyghurs.
Buzzfeed's actual news section was actually really good. They won a pullitzer, apparently? It's like they used their stupid "50 gifs that perfectly describe Gilmore Girls" articles to fund the actual news part of the company.
I remember seeing an inspirational post about a person who had two fake legs climbing a mountain. At the end of the article it said in big letters “What YOUR excuse?” Pakalu replied “His legs won’t get tired. Mine will.”
In regard to the second story… imagine having no life that you’re able to commit that much time and effort into ruining someone’s life over a comment… 🤦🏼♀️
@@thedesensitizedsympathizer5307 Bruh, you are extremely ill due to being chronically online if you think that the internet is the only way to kill boredom.
In Finland happened sad trolling case, where the victim decided to end his life. Victim was called "Risumies," but his real name was Jorma Hirvonen. Random dog walker harassed him when mister Hirvonen was doing some forest management. It was really sad and cruel how people mocked that old man to death.
This guy reminds me of this chick on FB who made 10 accounts to stalk and harass anyone who had pissed her off. She would harass random children on Facebook and even use people's photos of their children and pretend to be them. She was obsessed with this Japanese game/anime character (who was a high schooler by the way)and would threaten anyone who liked this character because she thought he was her "husband" This woman was around 35 at the time and spent her days and nights arguing with people who were around 12 -15 years old about a fictional vampire. One day she went as far as to tell where her ex-friend had lived in an act of revenge over another game. She wanted her friend to only edit images for her but the person edited for some else anyway. This chick later started harassing anyone who would use edited photos of characters she liked. She was obsessed with vampires and otome games and thought all these characters were her spouses. People like this are clearly deranged.
I was so scared seeing Harold in the thumbnails next to the word "victim", and truly relieved to see that he's the happy exception to the rule. Everyone loves Harold!
Wow who could've guessed a man harrassing a woman who posted a supportive comment and stood up to her bullies could look like a dusty old troll bridge himself? Unbelievable!
41:31 fun fact: the first issue of Playboy magazine presented Marilyn Monroe on the cover. That was in fact, a stock photograph that Norma Jean was paid only 50$ for. Hugh Hefner never gave her any more money for that amazing collaboration.
It’s even more sickening when you take the entire context into consideration. People didn’t like the contestant because he was “a punk.” But then they turn around and act out in even more disgusting and vitriolic ways. How could the trolls claim to have the moral high ground when they’re stooping to such low levels? Absolutely wild.
Ngl the Pakalu Papito meme is pretty interesting, and idk why but him being based on an actual college staff member seems to fit pretty well for some odd reason. We knew the guy as Xavier, and I guess the association with college was probably because we had a professor named Xavier and from what I know, there is a passing resemblance between the two. That being said, it is good to seem that Mr. Om Prakash is doing well after all these years.
Harold is Hungarian, he is enjoying a meme life. He said it was weird at first, but now has trips to other countries, he gets invitations from all around the world. 🙂
It's sad that there are trolls that do steal Facebook or social media's profile pictures of users then go on a trolling tirade campaign to defame them like that :/
Definitely, this is the reason I don't use actual pictures of myself on profiles. Its sad that social media has become ANTI-social media. The original intent of these apps has been eroded.
It's scary how completely braindead and emotionally immature internet trolls are. As an epileptic I get too many people spamming me with flashing gifs online when they find out about my condition.
I’ve actually seen Andras’ posts on Facebook, he was traveling and it was such a delight! His Hide the Pain Harold photos are great memes because he looks relatable. I’m glad his meme experience was a positive one.
Never use your full name unless required, keep your privacy settings to friends, keep your business email address and leisure email address separate, and don't interact with the public comments on facebook (or any meta service at this point). I know that sweet hit of dopamine feels good when telling off a troll on facebook, but as you can see, it could cause you a lot of harm in the long run.
@@clockhanded my last name initial isnt D. The D990 is just random and doesn’t mean anything. There’s actually a more fatal flaw to my UA-cam account that exposes me, but it isn’t in my username.
Most probably the Pakalu Papito account was created by some IIT Kanpur student. GIven the institute has always produced some great engineers and technical genius including the CEO of IBM, it would be safe to say that it is the kind of engineer dude humor that Papito dwelt in.
I know Greenen72 (the Harold OG poster) IRL, he's my housemate. I didn't believe him either till he logged into his old FP account and told me the story. Basically, he was in college in a photography course and happened upon the photos while learning Photoshop and partaking in those threads on FP. He just happened to share them with the forum and the rest took off without him, he said he only made a few memes himself. Nowadays he's a web dev and watches his parents' cats while they travel. It's honestly hilarious how little it impacted him and he doesn't wear the experience with much pride, as he's very much an introvert and doesn't love attention. Really nice guy, just shy and quiet. Spends his free time watching anime and playing games like most people.
Let’s be honest Andrés didn’t have his likeness “stolen”. He did some modelling for stock photos, and people used them. It’s entirely what stock photos are meant for. Nobody impersonated him or used his likeness for anything nefarious, at least not to any notable degree. He simply joined the likes of Bad Luck Brian and Scumbag Steve in the halls of Internet Memedom.
Pakalu Papito/Xavier has always been a mystery to me. What is a middle-aged Indian man doing sh*tposting dad jokes on the internet all day? It’s hilarious.

Hey remember when a guy wrote a heartfelt tribute to his deceased friend on MySpace, but he misspelled one two-letter word and the entire internet made 'an hero' into an insult out of it? Yeah
Oh, no, that was worse than you remember. They were making fun of literal children. The person who died was a seventh grader that committed suicide. /b/ got ahold of the memorial poem, saw mention of a lost iPod on the memorial, and made up a lie that the kid killed himself after losing his iPod. And then “commit an hero” became a very shitty way for people to tell others to go kill themselves for YEARS.
Personally I still use “an hero” but only towards myself either to make light of my ideations around friends or mock my most recent ex telling me to go “commit an hero”. I used it before finding out about its dark origins but I can’t think of another way to address my own demons.
I'm literally about to do awful work which will cover my hands in bad stuff, so I looked for a vid that is long enough w good comments. Here I am as I'm about to glove up😊
I stand with Nicola in her activism. “Trolls” aren’t a minor threat - they’re bullies at the least and emotionally manipulative asses with some sort of personality disorder at worst. It’s not about “joking around”. I LOVE humor, especially dark comedy, but trolls DELIBERATELY try to hurt you, or put you in an emotionally vulnerable place. It’s not their goal to amuse you with their comments. Amuse THEMSELVES, maybe, but never you. And the more angry/sad you get, the more entertainment they get
But she wasn't trolled. A troll goes to a wings of redemption stream and calls him Richard cuz it pisses him off. People slandering a person as a fucking pedophile and child abuser are just psychos and criminals.
Trolls back then: Trololololo! Trolls right now: Let's bully innocent people and claim that we're joking so that we can feel better in our miserable lives!
Internet trolls are always disturbing. but when they go beyond trolling even insulting hate filled to the level of disturbing you're talking about. they've become evil
They're not always disturbing, they're even funny half the time. A lot of what people call "trolling" far exceeds that, though. People will call someone who's committing psychological warfare on someone, quite literally expending hundreds of man-hours to destroy that persons life and livelihood, a troll. That ain't a troll. That's Beelzebub. I feel like "troll" has become similar to "bigot" in that it's thrown around haphazardly as a catch-all term. To use a South Park reference (because we're erudite here), it's like calling both Clyde and Cartman "dicks" where Clyde will occasionally say something off-the-wall that's mean but funny about someone -- and Cartman will get someones parents killed, butcher them, cook them, and feed them to their child. Or 60s Joker and Dark Knight Joker; one throws a pie, the other throws a grenade.

Thanks for helping me regain memory. Some that had nothing to do with what youre covering but where I was at, and what I was doing. Channel is fantastic.
The real guy behind the Hide the Pain Harold meme seems like such a sweetheart. It's really impressive that he was such a successful electrical engineer too.
I remember having a troll that harassed me and a few others for nearly 10 years, not as bad as these people, but man was obsessed with harassing then 14 year old me and nearly drove someone else to unaliving themselves
I've heard people speculate about many trolls being undiagnosed narcissistic personality disorder sufferers. Which would track on the surface, given how destructive that condition can be without help managing it, but certainly cannot account for all of them, and not for _ten years_ level of stalking and harassment and I'm hearing more and more cases like the the longer I look around the internet. NPD doesn't come with too many cases of prolonged obsession I don't think, they have the average person's attention span and would get as bored with this as anyone else. We'll never really know what's going on for sure, but certainly this kind of thing is not engaged with by someone who is healthy. It's morbidly fascinating, and horrifying to consider what kind of mindset might might be behind these things.
Thanks Wavy :) I found your channel last year when I was struggling with a bout of depression caused by a knee injury, which meant I spent allot of time on the couch watching UA-cam. Your storytelling and voice is very calming and gives me allot of comfort. Keep on keeping on you absolute legend!
im pretty sure pakalu papito are Filipino (the one behind the account not the person) because that name are actually a comedian stage name in i remember.
Online harassment STILL isn't taken as seriously, I swear I've had the same guy online pester me and some other unrelated folk for over ten years now, and the fact it's cross-country makes nobody really care to help sadly. I wish there was better services to reach out to about this stuff. People don't realize how fucked it can be, same shit as her, people who fake your accounts to make you look awful. He's very obviously mentally ill but I imagine a lot of these people literally do just live on their computers and have no social interactions outside, so there's no one in real life to bring attention to how risky they are
Yo what if the college professor is actually a big time internet troll? Lol! That would be like the cherry on top of this whole thing. That would be amazing.
Congrats for finding Xavier! If the man is comedic in real life (even if account was operated someone else without permission), then he can make a big career out of stand up comedy.
I really hope you speak about Jessie Slaughter at one point. I was her age when all of that went down, and I help contribute to that mess. I wasn't contacting anyone, or contibuting to the content creation side of things, but I consumed it, and showed that there was demand for it. When I was 12, seeing Jessie's father impotently blow up on a medium of communication he didn't quite understand, I thought it was hilarious. He backtraced the IP to the cyber police?! Epic lulz!! Trollface! Now that I'm 30 years old and almost became a father due to a pregnancy scare in 2017, I am horrified. I can only imagine the level of terror, anger, helplessness, and despair that all of us put him and his *twelve year old* daughter through. Was she obnoxious? Sure, what tween raised in the suburbs isn't? She didn't deserve the way people treated her. The fact that it wound up killing him is nothing short of absolutely tragic, and the mistake I made by contributing to the demand may haunt me for the rest of my life. I hope we're happy with ourselves.
Some trolling is fine but other types of trolling is not fine and I had to deal with malicious trolls who purposely spread lies about me to others. So I know how it feels to deal with trolls and it honestly feels really bad.
Some types of trolling is just trolling, what a lot of people will call "trolling" is just straight up psychological warfare. Like Karl here, I'm willing to bet he would call anyone who calls him a dipshit for his asinine opinions a troll -- but also call someone who does Una-bomber type shit a troll. Because there's only black-and-white, no gray. Like watching a Karate Competition and calling it a street fight.

There a little bit of light razzing, knocking around that isn't pushed too much. Then there's ill intent to ruin somebody or going so hard as to not care about the effects. It seems these days, troll is applied to everything.
Pakalu memes have brought me so much joy over the years. But Hide the Pain Harold is iconic. I love that Internet Historian still uses Harold’s image to represent himself to this day, it makes the stock animation he uses even more enjoyable.
András describing his life as a “fairytale” nearly brought tears to my eyes! It’s so silly because this is all about a stupid meme! 😂 It’s so amazing to see him giving a TED talk and getting to do new, fun and exciting things so late in life! I’m not saying his life would’ve been boring without the meme because that’s surely not true, given his childhood being in wartime. He’s a well-educated man, who made the most of a crazy situation. I respect him so much for that and it makes me really happy that he sees his life as a fairytale. ❤ I hope he gets to try even more new and fun things as the years go hun You’re the best, András!
I've always loved Hide the Pain Harold and do to this day. I'm glad to see that his story ended well rather than in pain and harassment. He seems like a genuinely sweet and wholesome man.
Wavy, this is one of the best video essay channels. You have the right balance of showing you speak, and then of showing us the actual topic / posts / people or responses. Please keep it up , amazing work.
The troll stuff reminded me of something my criminal justice professor told us: trolls like that have been shown to be more likely to fall under the "dark triad" of mental disorders, narcissistic personality disorder included
I've had my posts taken out of context and blasted on the internet once. It was impossible to clean up the damage it caused, and thankfully other people helped me. I have empathy for these people who feel this 50x if not more

When her dad reacted the way he did on camera, it painted a picture of a typical uneducated, dysfunctional family which at the time made them a low hanging fruit for memes and virality. She would harass random children on Facebook and even use people's photos of their children and pretend to be them.
She was obsessed with this Japanese game/anime character (who was a high schooler by the way)and would threaten anyone who liked this character because she thought he was her "husband"
This woman was around 35 at the time and spent her days and nights arguing with people who were around 12 -15 years old about a fictional vampire.

Because there's only black-and-white, no gray. Like watching a Karate Competition and calling it a street fight.
[someone who isn't me] formatted hundreds - thousands of KP (now called CSM i think) traders on irc efnet in the mid 90s. i formatted their WHOLE isht. this was before windows 95 was officially launched - it was not quite so easy to get back onlinefor most people back then :) [someone who isn't me] was just a lil kid and setup a bot tto do it
There a little bit of light razzing, knocking around that isn't pushed too much. Then there's ill intent to ruin somebody or going so hard as to not care about the effects. It seems these days, troll is applied to everything.

We all shed a collective tear for Andres Arato. What a gem.
I was introduced to Twitter by the hilarious tweets of Pakulo papito!
Pakalu memes have brought me so much joy over the years. But Hide the Pain Harold is iconic. I love that Internet Historian still uses Harold’s image to represent himself to this day, it makes the stock animation he uses even more enjoyable.
Racist caricatures brought you joy, huh? Says a lot about you as a person

@kneerunjun His jokes weren't always racist.
Most of them were pretty harmless.
"The reporting tool did not work" it never does
András describing his life as a “fairytale” nearly brought tears to my eyes! ❤ I hope he gets to try even more new and fun things as the years go hun You’re the best, András!
i recently spotted mr. andras starring in a dutch nesquik commerical. i'm so proud of him😭
I've always loved Hide the Pain Harold and do to this day. I'm glad to see that his story ended well rather than in pain and harassment. He seems like a genuinely sweet and wholesome man.
Wavy, this is one of the best video essay channels. You have the right balance of showing you speak, and then of showing us the actual topic / posts / people or responses. You avoid the over use of stock photos / images which is the worst part of most other video essay channels. I also can’t get enough of learning about internet culture. Please keep it up , amazing work.
The troll stuff reminded me of something my criminal justice professor told us: trolls like that have been shown to be more likely to fall under the "dark triad" of mental disorders, narcissistic personality disorder included
This checks out-my ex is an internet maniac and lives on /b/ and is a legitimate psychopath.
I've had my posts taken out of context and blasted on the internet once. It was impossible to clean up the damage it caused, and thankfully other people helped me. I have empathy for these people who feel this 50x if not more
Lmfao you got EMBARRASSED
Occupation: family disappointment 😂😂😂 hey we’re doing the same job Pakalu and I.
