When 64 games finally came to the Switch, and I turned on Yoshi's Story naturally, and sat through the intro with my sister. A few moments later, I heard the TV upstairs turn off and footsteps come downstairs. My mother opened the door and was like 'I heard Yoshi Story'. Even over twenty years later, this game's still unforgettable.
Well technically if it was unforgettable at some point then it still must be. Because you can't forget what's unforgettable. So it is not forgotten. I mean. You know.
Don't be fooled by the cute art style I adored this game, but it was a nightmare to do full heart runs or all fruit runs the atmosphere could be terrifying and hearing the squeals of Yoshi's dieing shook me to point I avoided death more than any other game
It was a great game for children who were new to video games - colorful cutesy graphics and music, simple gameplay, and a difficulty that suits everybody. If you're new, you can just grab a couple hearts and eat random fruits to get through the game, then eventually try to get all hearts in all levels, and do melon-only runs, which can really leave you stumped at points. It's the perfect platformer for kids - It's a shame that a lot of reviewers seem to ignore that it wasn't made for an audience of 30 years old jaded hardcore gamers.
Its 1999 and my dad buys a N64 for me and my older brother. We were thrilled! My older brother wanted to buy Mario 64, however, I wanted Yoshi's Story. My brother is still mad about it. I have to show him this vid to finally make him understand, that it actually was worth it!
They did eventually end up making one with the assets. It was called Yoshi Topsy Turvey, or Universal Gravitation... depending where you lived. The story and characters are trash, and the gameplay is meh, and the music is poop... but its a neat little tech demo of a game for awhile...
Yoshi’s Story is absolutely the best black sheep of the Yoshi franchise! Not the most perfect game, admittedly, but still a solid second attempt to make Yoshi a stand-alone platforming mascot. If only they allowed you to retry those blasted melon games…
Yeah, that would've been nice, given how stingy the game is with its "life system". Imagine playing through Yoshi's Island to 100% completion with so much as 6 measly lives, and only with one chance to regain one of them per level (the White Shy Guys). That would just be madness!
This was such a joy to work on with you. I wish this game had more recognition from the N64 community. It was always one of those mysterious games that I've known of but never played or knew much about. Thank you for introducing me to this classic! I can't wait for Super Monkey Ball 2!
Absolutely, my guy! I've always felt that this game has been slept on which is a real shame because it's exceptionally solid. You did a great job with the final edit and I'm super eager to see what you do with SMB2!
6:55 Yoshi actually took infinite hits while the timer would run out, which was why later stages would be littered with one-hit KO traps. Taking all those hits would only stun Yoshi, while a spike or a thorn or *PRETTY BEAUTIFUL LAVA* would one-shot him.
I have to admit that the ending of this video made me feel quite emotional; I actually owned Yoshi Story as a kid along with many other N64 games, and while I DID suffer the N64 Control Stick issue where I would have to push the stick hard just to run as it was quite worn out, I felt really happy when I could beat it for the first time and then weep with the "The End" screen with a looping music box-like jingle of the main theme (and for that matter, I used to be terrified of dying because of the scene with the Yoshis getting carried away to a creepy castle, to the point that I can recall that at first I used to jump off bed and run to the N64 to turn it off immediately to both avoid watching that and not lose a Yoshi). I also sit through today through some of your Monkey Ball videos...man I hope that this channel blows up, because it spits nothing but facts and fun (seriously, I love how much jokes you put on these) and I'd like to see more people see this :)
This game was such an emotional roller-coaster for me as a kid!! The happy was euphoric and trippy, the sad was dark and hopeless. Frantic, tender, nostalgic, melancholic, scary at times...
This is one of the games that my mom also played through and beat when I was a kid. She also played a few of the Sonic games, and Kirby All Star. It has a special place in my heart because of that, just seeing my adult mom who wasn’t really interested in the kid stuff me and brothers liked, sitting there for hours and days playing Yoshi Story and having fun with us.
This was the first game I could beat as a small child, I was probably 4 or 5. This game means so much to me, I teared up watching this just because how much this game brought me. I felt so accomplished being able to beat a game, just like my older sister could! It brought me into gaming and that was such a huge part of my life, it’s how I met my best friend in high school, it’s how I first connected with my now husband, and now we have a son together and hope that he has great games to bring him as much joy as my husband and I had. Thank you for making a video about how important it is for small kids to have good games.
Was trying to think of any really good looking N64 games but it's been so long and the visuals of the system have aged so much I can't even begin to think of what I'd call really standout visuals for the system lol. Maybe Rogue Squadron, the ship models looked amazing for the time, as did the ones in the sequel which still look amazing for a GameCube launch title. Things like this and Paper Mario really got around the limitations of the time with their artstyle choices. This almost looks like an early GameCube game in parts

Yoshi story and Kirby crystal shard were incredible baby games me and my friends could actually beat levels whether or not we had played before or even owned a N64. And the kids without controllers could just sing along to the catchy music
Legitamately, one of my favourite games of all time. It's mainly because I grew up with it, but either way I consider it to be a fantastic game. I believe it still holds up: the gameplay, the graphics, the charming aesthetic - everything.

@@PinchedCake6 they had an N64 and like a dozen games for it. Keep in mind this was like a decade after the N64 released so they probably got it for cheap for the kids to play.
The reason melons are considered by all yoshis to be thier favorite fruit, is because in Japanese culture melons especially muskmelons are considered a delicacy (ua-cam.com/video/2YntFbFRnvs/v-deo.html)
When I read about Mellon run, I knew that's how I had to main this game since I played it constantly and knew the levels so well, though I never really figured out the hearts unlock levels thing until much later, so most of my runs consisted of doing level 1.
Yoshi story are the one of my favorite game. The art style, and game play always amaze me. The basic game are in "easy mode" since you can just gulp all the fruit scattered, but you can challenge your self by just eating one kind of fruit and get special ending of stage. Also for the expert, try eating only melons, some of them showed up by "sniffing" it, and some just showed up once in some specific challenge per stage. ;)
Overall Yoshi's Story just had so many things working against it. The departure in gameplay emphasis from Yoshi's Island was already an uphill climb with certain fans, but the popular value of 2D platformers in general plummeted around the time of its release and it would take years for it to come back. Throw in the reputation about its simple difficulty and you had a scenario seemingly tailor made to downplay its presence. While I do think today its an environment far more open to artistically distinct, albeit breezy platformers (see the affection for Kirby's Epic Yarn), the image of Yoshi's Story as too easy for older fans is still haunting it, especially in comparison to the well received approach of the more variable difficulty in Woolly World or Crafted World.
The Yoshis ARE always trippin' balls. You know how koalas are always low-key drunk because of how they digest eucalyptus? Same thing, but with the fruit of the Super Happy Tree. Also, I mean, Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy.
Damn, you present some compelling evidence. :P I had totally forgotten about Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy. That must be why they're so happy all the time. And they seem to get trapped in storybooks pretty often too if you ask me.
It really is and isnt even mentioned anywhere, great solid platformer with some challenging stages especially in co-op. They need to port that sucker over to Switch.
This wasn’t the first of your videos that popped up in my recommendations (Year of Luigi and the Ms. Pac-Man videos showed up first) but this was the one I actively clicked on and loved it. Great video and couldn’t help myself but watch more of your content. Looking forward for more to come
This game was my favorite as a kid and still has a precious place in my heart. It is so good and so mysterious. My family and I remember finding an Orange and a Purple Egg in the game (Same as the Black and White) to unlock more Yoshis, but we were kids and my parent were even worst at video game. Each time we discovered an egg, we had difficulies bringing it back because we were always dying. Before the orange and purple Yoshis began to appears we played a lot. We were 3 brothers and my 2 parents playing on it because it was our only game lmao. I thought maybe it is really rare to find those special orange and purple Yoshis because you have to play the levels in a special order, and/or collect all the hearts and Melons, and or all the coins... But i did not get any answers about it. I even write to nintendo many years ago and they answered me back saying they could not tell if there is or not more Yoshis in the game than the Black and the White one....maybe its pretty rare to encounter one of these, maybe I own a particular version of the game, or maybe it is simple hallucinations, but everyone in my family remembers...this is very strange...one day my brother started to play again and erased all datas on it....i started to play on it a months ago on my old nintendo 64, trying to get all coins an everything, still no clue...I know some people won't believe my story, I know some others explained it was supposed to be these 2 Yoshis in the game but they changed it for the white and black for the official release, I know everyone thinks it's a myth, and I am sure, many persons looked at the game program and maybe they found nothing, but for my family and I, this is real. Maybe someday I will have my answer. But for sure Yoshi Story was and still is a wonderful part of my childhood and my life.
This game was my entire childhood. I used to live with my grandparents lock myself in the storage room with my 64, sitting on a milkcrate playing on a CRT. Miss that
it's not just touching enemies that damages you. certain things were not meant to be eaten (such as black shy guys and peppers) unless you're a black or white yoshi. and dont even think about eating a teehee butterfly while they're blue.
When I was a kid, I would ALWAYS reset the game if I lost a Yoshi. As a result, of course, it took waaayyy longer than it needed to to complete a single runthru. It was too sad to me to not see all the colors (including black and white!) in the selection screen.
Oh yeah, that “baby game” that absolutely drags you through hell and back. As a kid, this game gave me far more stress trying to 100% than Star Fox 64/Bomberman 64 ever did.
Absolutely loved this game as a kid Was surprised to see how forgotten it mostly is as I got older Good to see there's still people out there that give it the love it deserves
Definitly one of my childhood's game! Still looks incredible. The music always reminded me of the GINGERBREAD MAN by THE RESIDENTS if you want more of this.
Glad I got recommended this video; Yoshi's Story was my childhood man. Its nice that you also pointed out that even if it's kinda baby game, it's still nice to play leisurely for all ages.
I noticed that old games with weird cartoony/cutesie art styles seem to age better. The one that sticks out to me is Zelda Wind Waker compared to the other games. I just played it a few months ago and it still looks good. And Yoshi's Story with it's unique art style also ages better than other games that came out around the same time that tried to look cool. Weird.
It really isn't. It has a bunch of really weird/straight up horrifying character designs. Just look at what they did to baby Bowser compared to his design in Yoshi's Island. Even within the Yoshi series, there are cuter games like Woolly World
This was my childhood Yoshi game. I would rent it from my local video rental store, which I would add to my personal collection once it went out of business. It’s sentimental to me due to my memories of that particular video rental store growing up
This was like, so good!!!! Like, I've been watching reviews in the classic "JonTron" esc,ish style for years, but you went and made this your own thing! Like you made this so poetic and emotional while still light hearted and funny, much like the game. It didn't feel like a review with forced jokes for the sake of edge or like five million other UA-cam videos on why game X is good. This made me appreciate Yoshi Story even more and got me emotionally. That ending bit where you tie the ending back to the beginning was SO POETIC!! Keep up the great work, you deserve so many more subs!! I hope you have a bright future ahead of you!!
Glad to see some praise towards this game. While I definitely don't think it's as good as the original, I love that it does its own thing, something I feel like a number of the sequels don't do.
I have to admit that i have scripts to make a channel just like this premise but in my language and country. I am tired of people making fairly good games look bad and shit like that. There is people that barely can play videogames but suddenly they are judges and executioners of games that don't have the chance to be exposed both good and bad. My idea was exactly that showing the usual conceptions , aboard the gameplay and show people how moderate to enthusiasts do have fun with the game, cause other people would just rant and call it shit a la Arin Hanson Egoraptor. Glad to found your channel.
I think this game has so many thing in common with star fox 64, and people still call yoshi's story a bad experience and think starfox is one of best games on the platform. Both games you can finish in about an hour, but have multiple paths you can take to make it infinitly replayable. Yoshi's story also has my second favorite artstyle of the series, next to crafted world. And it is centainly not the most easy game in the series, so I don't get peoples complaint on that front. I would even go as far as to say yoshi's story is probably in my top 10 favorite n64 games!
I just don't know how to make this game fun again now that I've grown. Collecting any fruit is too easy, and going for only melons is boring because the sniffing mechanic is obnoxious to use every few inches of the map, and it's not fun at all.
I ain’t gone hold you, I have more of a fondness for Yoshi’s Story as a opposed to Yoshi’s Island. Now. Granted. I grew up on it so there is a level of bias but in me playing Yoshi’s Island recently through the Switch, it doesn’t grab me like Yoshi’s Story does.
You say that Yoshi’s body size was changed in this game because they were supposed to be baby Yoshis, but this is the model they’ve used in every Yoshi representation since, even in non Yoshi games like Mario Kart and Party. It makes me sad. RIP tall skinny Mario World/Yoshis Island Yoshi.
I played it for the first time recently just bc i was interested in the creatures, but it was SOO charming and fun! I found myself really invested in its gameplay design, and simply exploring this weird world, really lovely game! Thanks for shedding a spotlight on it!
4:59 - Quick to beat, but plenty to replay is a mentality I do like to see in my games, an is part of why I like the Kirby series and (compared to other JRPG's length) Pokémon series. I'm glad to see Yoshi's Story receive some love, with plenty of praise to it's strengths here and even some interesting trivia that I never knew about through exploring it's speed-running community.
Yoshi's Story was probably my first time feeling like I'd been bait-and-switched. In its early development it was being touted as Yoshi's Island 64, but it was so lacklustre by comparison. Sure there was secret stuff to find, but the game noticeably didn't reward or even record it in any tangible way*, so it felt pointless. When I first managed to 100% a level, I felt like the game never even intended for me to do such a thing, so I had no interest in doing the rest. So my issue with the game wasn't that it was "for babies" or "too easy." It was the way it presented me with challenges, but once I completed any of them the game went "so what?" *keeping a score tally from which you may kinda infer successfully gathering all melons and heart fruits doesn't count - there are other ways to score over 3400 points on a level
You are half right about kids playing a game, gettting al beat and giving up on a game. I was averse to play Battletoads... So instead i played most of my childhood Battletoads and Double Dragon. So no. There isn't a baby's first game. If you can read, you can play any game that is not brutally hard. Games like Yoshi story are good if you want a very easy game to relax on. But both kids and adults may like this. me? I like the first Yoshi Island because it's deceitfully hard. Specially the secret levels. And i never liked Story. Because it's way too easy. I had the same problem with most Kirby games, the NES one... Can get challenging sometimes. Most of the sequels... Stupid easy. As i said, i grew up with hard games, but there are games that let you learn from them. The reason i played Battletoads and Double Dragon is because the game lets you play non stop almost. Battletoads, everytime you die, back to square one. You die at the bike? Back to the checkpoint. In BTDD , you die. you respawn. You lose 3 or 4 lives, game, over , continue. THEn back to the checkpoint. It's a game you have fun when learning. And eventually get good at it. I hated the asteroids level but that was nothing compared with the first game wheel level. What im trying to say is that it's perfectly okay to like very easy games, but by no means a game that it's too easy should be classified as a kids game. Some kids just like to get a good challenge. I really disliked very easy games my entire life. Id rather play hard games with cheatcodes until i didn't need them anymore than playing a game that holds my hand so tight. I used to play doom with God mode, then All weapons, Now i usualy play it on fast monsters ultraviolence and obviously no cheats. There is more fun on conquering a challenge than just win, to me. Sometimes... It's all about the journey.
My dad brought the game back home in the late 90’s While he couldn’t really get into it. For it was me whom was only about 4-6 at the time absolutely adored the game
These Yoshi games pretty much show why Bowser is the way he is. He's a very dumb and spoiled kid, and stayed like that as an adult, kinda like Cartman from South Park but PG lol Probably because of Kamek being pretty much a single father
OH MY GOOD GREEN GOD I can't tell you enough how much i said "YES! YES! YES!☝🏻☝🏻" When you opened a "best games" drawer and had Yoshi's Island cartridges!!!
The idea that this game is for young children is laughable. Ive beaten darksouls, but this game has found ways to kill me a lot more easily than other platformers

It wouldn't have been practical beyond the tech demo use that it had. It actually had to make ALOT of concessions and used up the entire cart.

Ah! Yes! I always look forward for your videos. Another excellent video from you, thank you!
Thanks so much! It makes me very happy to hear that you look forward to them. I'm happy to provide. :D
2020’s sexiest man of the year award
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! hardly anyone ever talks about this game.
what most dont realize is that baby bowser kills the main yoshis. what survived were the eggs, the yoshis that were born into a cursed world
This wasn’t the first of your videos that popped up in my recommendations (Year of Luigi and the Ms. Pac-Man videos showed up first) but this was the one I actively clicked on and loved it. Great video and couldn’t help myself but watch more of your content. Looking forward for more to come
I loved this game as a kid. And if you beat a level it said "and the page turned and the yoshis grew happier. It made me happier lol
Miss that
The “you wouldnt like me when Im happy” is the best joke in here 😆
Once you unlock all the levels the game really comes to life as a score attack game in trial mode.
So this story is Baby Bowser being jealous that Yoshis be gettin' high as fuck all the time.
I've always really liked the unique way to clear stages in Yoshi's story, I can't think of anything like it.
it's not just touching enemies that damages you. certain things were not meant to be eaten (such as black shy guys and peppers) unless you're a black or white yoshi. and dont even think about eating a teehee butterfly while they're blue.
It's shaped like yoshis head and I've never wanted something so impractical more in my life
They did something similar for the Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack.
This game is my first ever legit video game I’ve ever owned. So it will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason.
I always thought Yoshi’s Story was waaay better than Yoshi’s Island, I never knew the mainstream opinion was anything otherwise..
Yoshi's New Island is a guilty pleasure for me.
They had this game at those old N64 stations at the McDonalds I went to as a kid back in the day. I remember it being pretty fun.
No you know what's for little baby children?...
...little baby ice cream
Don’t you dare call this a baby game
This is a man’s game get that right
You're goddamn right.
My favorite game growing up.
Played this alot when i owned an N64 back in 2013,
Also, the soundtrack bangs, Totaka killed it with this one.
I auto-read the title as Yoshi's island. Then realized it's about yoshis story. EVEN BETTER. This is my childhood yoshi game!!
Absolutely loved this game as a kid
Was surprised to see how forgotten it mostly is as I got older
Good to see there's still people out there that give it the love it deserves
Definitly one of my childhood's game! Still looks incredible.
The music always reminded me of the GINGERBREAD MAN by THE RESIDENTS if you want more of this.
Every Time I hear the Smash version of Yoshi's Story End theme I get reminded of the time at a smash tournament where the entire crowd sang along.
Weird.
That’s why I love the strange artstyle of the characters in Mario Kart 64, mainly Yoshi and Bowser.
I love seeing Yoshis story get the respect it deserves
Yoshi Story is the absolute cutest game of all. I loved it.
It really isn't. It has a bunch of really weird/straight up horrifying character designs. Just look at what they did to baby Bowser compared to his design in Yoshi's Island. Even within the Yoshi series, there are cuter games like Woolly World
1) How have I never seen anything about this game except for the smash stage
2) how did you make it look like the most fun game in history
I just remember Yoshi's Story being way too easy and way too short.
Glad to see some praise towards this game. While I definitely don't think it's as good as the original, I love that it does its own thing, something I feel like a number of the sequels don't do.
I always remembered the Yoshi rap song in the pirahana plant stage lol. “Yoshee…da da da…Yoshee!”
This game was definitely weirder then I remembered XD
I found the progression through this game so incredibly confusing as a kid.
This game will play with your emotions too Im 30 years old and Yoshi’s Story will make me shed a tear.
I played it for the first time recently just bc i was interested in the creatures, but it was SOO charming and fun! I found myself really invested in its gameplay design, and simply exploring this weird world, really lovely game! Thanks for shedding a spotlight on it!
i used to always just try to get every melon since most levels infinitely scrolled then would combo whatever fruit matched my yoshi after
Friends keep on asking what's that song I keep whistling, it's the them we heard at the start of this video from Yoshi's Island.
This game was so good as a kid. Between this and Chameleon Twist I'm surprised more games don't feature tongues prominently.
Ah such a nostalgia trip, I remember playing it on the wii with the superior classic controller
Yoshi's Island DS was the best, the characters and extra screen though
Yoshi's Story was probably my first time feeling like I'd been bait-and-switched. In its early development it was being touted as Yoshi's Island 64, but it was so lacklustre by comparison. Sure there was secret stuff to find, but the game noticeably didn't reward or even record it in any tangible way*, so it felt pointless.
When I first managed to 100% a level, I felt like the game never even intended for me to do such a thing, so I had no interest in doing the rest.
So my issue with the game wasn't that it was "for babies" or "too easy." It was the way it presented me with challenges, but once I completed any of them the game went "so what?"
*keeping a score tally from which you may kinda infer successfully gathering all melons and heart fruits doesn't count - there are other ways to score over 3400 points on a level
My dad brought the game back home in the late 90’s
While he couldn’t really get into it. For it was me whom was only about 4-6 at the time absolutely adored the game
i wanted a yoshi island 2 so much, my mom was lucky enough to return it in my memory.
Look, Yoshi Touch and Go doesn't sound right when he is carrying an almost naked baby.
These Yoshi games pretty much show why Bowser is the way he is. He's a very dumb and spoiled kid, and stayed like that as an adult, kinda like Cartman from South Park but PG lol
Probably because of Kamek being pretty much a single father
One of my childhood favorites.. Wonderful Review 🙏🏽💯
OH MY GOOD GREEN GOD I can't tell you enough how much i said "YES! YES! YES!☝🏻☝🏻" When you opened a "best games" drawer and had Yoshi's Island cartridges!!!
what sucks is the first time i played the baby bowser fight i never realized you could eat the fruit.
The idea that this game is for young children is laughable.
Ive beaten darksouls, but this game has found ways to kill me a lot more easily than other platformers
