Jon, I don't often comment on youtube, but I just had to say that your personality, enthusiasm and joy for what you do is so infectious! Absolutely great stuff man!
Many thanks for the kind comment dude!!
using empty shoes to illustrate foot placement is the kind of great idea I'm shocked I don't see all the time....
You remind me how lucky I am to be a 40 yo skateboarder. Your stoke is contagious. Really really dig this.
Nice one !!
Me too 😁
I'm really glad I stumbled across this video. As a middle aged guy at 39 and wanting to start surf skating this was really helpful and I can't wait to get started.
Nice one
Go for it dude, let me know how you get on!!
51 in the uk been on my smoothstar for a couple of years ..love it ..use it to pop to shops 🤗
You are the Crocodile Hunter of Skateboarding. Very informative too, thanks!
😆🤟46 and picked up a second hand carver board yesterday. Was down the skatepark with my kids today who are mad for it. My eldest son (9) nailed his first blunt over the spine and I googled it and showed him the nose grab you were putting in.... Next video of yours i watched was this one. 😆. Perfect content this evening. I tighted the C7 to max and had my first proper go today. What a buzz. You've snagged another sub. Great stuff! Thanks 🙏
Great video! I'm a 40yo mum getting back into surfing and started surf skating. So much fun! Your videos are really helpful thank you :) Hi from Melbourne, Australia
Many thanks for tuning in!
Haha. Love this video. Just turned 40 and got a yow surfskate about 10 months ago. Still get funny looks off all the grown ups walking dogs whilst I'm chasing my kids around the park on their scooters. brilliant fun like you say to just cruise around on. Think the yow trucks are a little looser than carver so a bit more responsive in the turn but harder to generate speed with. You got a really nice flow when you are riding your board. Great vid. Thanks for sharing
Im with you man, I just started skating during lockdown and found skating with my 3year old daughter on her scooter is alot of fun for both of us and great practice!
Keep it up, guys, one more here for the group! I enjoy pumping and cruising with my kid all along the seafront!!
Legend ! This man knows his stuff. Carvers are the way!
Thanks for a top review, really well done. You answered a lot of questions on how it performs and where it works.Keep ripping and I would not be surprised to see you airing those double bumps if you havn't already.
One of my favorite Channel ! Thanks Jon, a reference for me.
Nice one. Love how you break the mechanics down.
Hey Jon, great Video, Thanks man. I also just started longboarding at age 50, and had so much fun (on a borrowed board) at the skatepark with my kids that I am going to get another board specifically for (learning to) carving the bowls at the park. I really appreciate your video's and positive attitude. It's infectious! cheers!
Great stuff!
Skating and catching as much stoke as possible at 47 years. Recently gave surfskate a shot. The pumping took a minute to grab. Old school tic-tac habit and soft wheels i guess. But i am getting it. Much different and can get some good speed. Keep up the dream and stoke! Your vibe is off the charts.
Many thanks for tuning in dude!

Twenty bucks that these become popular soon and I’m gonna credit this dude for starting the trend lmao
Great edit Jon! enjoyed it.
I like your surf experience in this video series.
Very nice dude, stoked!!! Keep on with the great attitude!
Awesome video mate. Im a skater from years back and recently realised the local pump track would be really fun on one of these
Not half !!
Great work Jon, I'm 55 and just started surf skating. I love it !. I can't wait to go for a surf and see if I've picked up any tricks.
Many thanks for checking in dude!
Love this video🤙
I just started learning how to turn in the bowl.
This video was so helpful 🤣
Just beautiful!
love your videos! please continue with the surf skate videos!
Many thanks, will do parts three and four are coming up soon !
Really nice video, Jon, I own precisely that surfskate, so I loved your tests, analysis and dissection of the "machine". It is true that it feels like much higher than a skate, when you change to the skateboard then it feels like you're riding a stiff board!!! I love the feeling of not having to put foot to ground for minutes, and it can even go up some slopes with a proper and intense pumping!
Great video again, keep it going! Suscribed, thumb, bell.
Yeah man, it’s proper ace fun !!
Beautiful video sir 👏🏾
Great review
I was not convinced that the truck could easily do the drop on a pool but after your video I will try it for sure :- )
Great job on this video very comprehensive
Many thanks for tuning in dude!!
Hi man I really liked the video, I was happy for a more detailed explanation of the technique of surf skate in the bowl

Wowwwed.
Thanks for your vdos.

Nice video!! Pretty fun to watch!! I have a "Slide" Surfskate, and the trucks are a little bit looser than Carver but still very responsive... Started a couple months ago, this is adictive!!
Great video. Thanks for posting!
Many thanks for tuning in !!
Sweet video, I’m going to buy a board now so when my kids are scootering at the local skatepark I can carve it up. 🤙 subscribed 🤙
I like this guy. Cool to see a middle aged guy who is so stoked
Excelente explicación, muchas gracias!
Wow first time I’ve heard of these decks looks a lot a fun thanks Jon you sold me 👍
Yeah man, there are loads of different surf skate brands and models to explore! I have to admit I did very little research when I purchased mine lol. My mate had one and when I tried his I liked it so much I just got exactly the same!
Yeh sweet Jon I normally ride a Lucero deck 32 x 10 I was going to look for something similar size I’m a big boy 115kg what size deck do you normally ride in bowls?
info - Sydney Stone Restorations hey dude, I have a 9 inch for bowls. This surf skate is 9.6 but feels pretty generous all round !!
Cheers Jon sorry Bennys the name Syd stone res is my company love the vids mate keep em coming 👍
Great video and you are a very skilled skater!
Many thanks for checking in dude!
Great video, makes me wanna buy a Surf Skate! Just what I needed....
Go for it !!
Laughs and a joy to watch. 🤙
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
Brother - you are *enthusiastic*; and have damn good technique...! Thank you for the stoke & subbing...!
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
Great video. Loved the off the lip...
I always go barefoot on my surfskate.
Keep on going hard
Great stuff !!
Awesome review mate!
Many thanks for tuning in!
Damn, now I have to try this!
Awesome content 🙂🤙🏽
You remind me of the crocodile hunter but for surfskating lol love it!
Great video. You're on to something. If you keep at it your channel could become huge!
Many thanks for the kind feedback dude.
Awesome dude, totally awesome video ! I sell these in my surf shop but never tried one until tomorrow that is, Peace !
Wicked Bruce, yeah, keeps the stoke going when it’s flat for sure !!
Thumbs up from the US just for your level of stoke.
Many thanks for tuning in dude!!
I love surf skate I used same caver cx4
these boards are awesome! we love it and we just started a channel with surfskate videos :)
Great video man! Stoke level is high.
I'm a bit late to the party. Cracking video Jon with great info. I'm currently looking at the Carver X triton or one of the Slide models 👍🏼its a bit of a minefield for beginners in what to pick. Deck, Trucks, what size, shape 🤦
Love the video!, i have the same board, just wanted to let you know that "Triton" is the name of the series not the model of the board. The name of this board is actually "Blue Horizon".
I’d love to see you do more of this style! Maybe you could try a zflex board or something? That would be sick
Hey dude,
This one is along those lines I think?

Good video lad! 🔥
Many thanks for tuning in!
Definately subscribing
I'm on a smoothstar toledo.. surfskate is addictive! been to a new park every week for a year now ;-) Nice vid and some nice skating!
Many thanks for tuning in !!
Did you find that you needed to tighten up the trucks mate? I thought the smoothstars would be a bit wobbly at speed
🔥🔥🔥great tutorial!
Many thanks for tuning in!
@@JonBishopSkate thank you for interesting content!
Great vid, admire your enthusiasm and will you be doing a review of the carver C7 trucks and compare them in the bowl...
Many thanks dude, yeah I have reviews of carver trucks and also surf skate bowl and mini ramp riding videos. Feel free to flick back through my videos. They are entitled Learn To Surf Skate parts 1 - 6
Again....Top notch 👌🙏 Have a search about, all the other marketing spray / slow mo etc and your reviews are always the best (in my view) Started on a cruiser in 2014 but 65/78 Flip wheels were maybe a bit too quick on transition 😅😅 I usually ride a standard 8.5 popsicle with 149 thunders and 56/86 Ricta clouds now which is great all round but getting the itch for a 32" Carver Triton or 32.5 Carver Black tip (more concave deck) My only slight fear is i can remember a guy had one at Kendal skatepark years ago, Powell Peralta deck and Carver CX trucks. He was doing vertical turns without kickturning 😱 I was bricking it just going down the flat bank as the front truck was so loose 😱 Will have to see, definitely a good idea when the skatepark still has a few puddles but the supermarket carpark is bone dry. Keep up the good work Jon 🙏👍
Nice one Rob !
😎👍
You are AWESOME! youre like the Steve Irwin of skateboarding!
Ha! The trick/slam/stoke hunter 😂
Inreally need to add one of those Waterborne adaptors to my old Sector 9 pintail to make it into a surfskate. Pumping just came naturally to me. Always did.
Great video though
Mahalo for the vid, love the energy and vibe! 35 plus years surfer and have been surf skating for several years. Helps me chip away at bad surf habits I’ve had for years and it definitely helps. THE MISSING LINK between surf and skate! I love it!
I’ve been making small improvements on drop-ins, grinds and slides, but have a long way to go and much to learn.
What do you recommend for THE BEST surf skate wheel for slides, without giving up grip and stability? I have struggled on several types, until I got on a Bones reissue, 60mm/90a. However, have spun out on a few bowl speed runs and my hips weren’t happy!
I keep looking for a 65-70mm wheel in the 90a plus range and have not found a lot to choose from. Any and all advice will be welcomed. Thank you in advance and keep rollin’!
Many thanks for tuning in dude.
Yeah, I recon it depends on the riding surface, but you are right to go harder to make it easier to break the wheels out. I put 60mm 95a on my Carver for this video, I like the way they slide and sound. Here is a link for reference.
ua-cam.com/users/shorts3X2u7R5zJyE?feature=share
I struggle to break out the 78a Carver wheels, but it can be done, it’s just easier on a harder compound!
Let me know how you get on!!??
Best Jon
Thank you Jon! I just picked up a set of Slime Balls 65/95a and they’re doing the trick. I just need to time my turn to have a fuller slash carve, Bert style.
Many reps needed! Thanks again!
Awesome vid bro. Just starting to surf-skate and skate all together here so your vids help a lot! Is that pump track in London? Looks awesome!
Hey dude,
Thanks for tuning in. The pump track is in Totton !
@@JonBishopSkate looks so cool! I might make the trip at some point! Cheers!
I was looking at buying a surf skate bored.... this video has convince me to get one 😂
Yeah man, it’s a lot of fun !!
Have you had any luck? I can’t find them in stock anywhere
Smooth
Hi Jon, great vid as always! I started skating about a year ago on a Carver Triton Green Glass, and then moved on to a Carver Bel-Air type setup with 58mm 83B wheels for pool skating which has become my standard skate. More recently I tried a "proper" skateboard setup with Indy 159 trucks, but haven't quite got into it yet... feels like it resists going into turns, and not as fast. The strange thing, and the point of my question, does it take you half a session to re-adapt to riding your normal board after the carver, or can you just swap from on to the other, and is it helpful? Thanks for the stoke and the surf connection! /Andrew.
Hi Andrew
I would say the Carver has been hugely helpful to my regular skating. I run my Indies super loose to emulate the carving abilities.
One thing I forgot to say in the video is to be careful going from the Surf Skate to a standard skateboard in the same session. I have come a cropper as you get use to the super tight turns of the carver and trying the same turns on the regular setup will buck you off!!
Going from a regular skateboard to the Carver is fine though. Loose trucks save lives lol !!
Awesome! Carver have C5 truck set that work brilliant in Bowls - pair up with the 58mm 90a wheels and you have a nice fast carving bowl rider.
Surfskate gives you an amazing leg and cardio workout - I jump on mine after work when I can if I cant get out to the skatepark.
Yeah, it’s ace fun !!
Checked out the C5, defo getting some, looks amazing !!
@@JonBishopSkate I got mine from these guys: www.themystospot.com/
Can you ride them fakie?
Guy Bartlett yeah, I think they are designed for that ?!!
🤘finally! someone to help me 🤘
Jon you should learn ollie fakie and frontside olllies on your ramp it would be a great watch!
Yeah, great ideas!!
I've been wondering how the Andy board is gonna be like if I slap on my surfskate trucks on it. I'm just stoked to see u have em both 😁😁😁😁😁 Wld be awesome if ur willing to make a vid on that.
Hey dude,
Yeah! surf skate trucks go great on the Anderson. Here’s my vid on it
ua-cam.com/video/KL6Kt1ghnzA/v-deo.html
@@JonBishopSkate holy shit! My bad bruh for not checkin out ur list first before asking😂😅 new subscriber & first time viewer here! Thanks!
Dope video as always. What's up with the front truck facing out?
Hey dude
Many thanks for tuning in!
It’s just the way it’s designed I think? It turns super tight compared to a normal truck so it recreates that tight carving turn, similar to that of a surf board?
Amazing bowl riding mate! What wheels did you use with the C5 setup?
Hey dude, I went with 61mm OJ Teamriders
The carver boards are a lot of fun on transitions. The only downside is they get a little sketchy rolling fakie.
Nice one Pat, it did cross my mind to try a bit of backwards, but I think I’d pop the pads on to test it out, I recon it could go wrong pretty quickly lol
Please upload more videos for surf skate
Yeah man, my next vid is gonna be learning basic lip tricks I recon !!
Lets get you on that Longboard next, some longboard dancing moves Jon.
Ha, I don’t think anyone wants to see me dancing lol
good vid!!! I will go along with my Carver as I see skating is more dangerous....! On my Carver I had no harm...yet! Do you know the shark Wheels?
Great Yes, go safely with all the best safety gear !!
Great video just in time for my 2nd visit to the pump truck as I chickened first time round. but have to ask: the pro-am skateboard behind you... Where did you get it from? Had a silver aluminium one, oh the memories!
Hey dude, a friend of mine lent me one to record my 70s video. When I saw one come up on eBay I jumped at the chance to own one!!
ua-cam.com/video/D1775oRGAkM/v-deo.html
Great video dude, I have a 28" x 8" cruiser soft bushings and was curious if I wanted to add a surfskate front truck is it usually best to keep the back truck the same height to the front? And also is there any point of modding my existing board with a surfskate or is it to tiny? I have 65mm wheels in it which are standard and the board has carved section's on the underneath to prevent wheel bite on sharp turns.
Hey Dude
Many thanks for tuning in !
Yeah, There are plenty of retro fit solutions out there. I put together a video where I fitted out my regular 9 inch Anderson deck with surf skate trucks.
ua-cam.com/video/KL6Kt1ghnzA/v-deo.html
It works a treat. You might want to invest in a set of trucks with an axle width that suits your deck width?? I’d imagine having both trucks a similar height would be best, but as long as they are fairly similar it would work?? TBH super lose indie trucks are not a million miles away, but the super tight turning Surf Skate front truck does provide that super fun surf turn experience!!
@@JonBishopSkate Awesome man I will checkout your other video, unfortunately my little cruiser has a 5" wide truck slightly on the narrow size but could still throw it around or experiment, and yer I didn't realise the surf skate adaptor came with a mounting spacer for rear truck to keep deck the same height but it makes sense. Im gonna take my cruiser to a pump track in WA and see how I go and try pickup a 2nd hand surf skate bargain to get a feel for it one day.
I have a carver set up as well. great fun until you forget you're on a carver and try to go fakie. Pretty 'exciting' to borrow one of your words. Overall and on balance, I think Indy's are the perfect truck. You can still carve them hard but they behave like a skateboard....
Got my Mini mal for the waves, my skateboard for the bowls, unfortunately my custom carver set up is gathering dust a bit at the moment, struggling to find a niche for it.
Might get it back out for another go after this though!
Yeah, I know what you mean, I’ve Been focused on progressing and pushing myself, But it’s been a nice break just to have a mellow Cruise about, no pressure!
I think there is a new Carver truck that rides fakie? I want it.
Maybe c5? You know anything?
@@guybartlett9587 I met someone at the skatepark once who said he had some and that they weren't worth it...
I think if you want a good carve and still like going fakie then you're probably better off with loose indy's. Let's not forget the best surf skaters ever to grace the asphalt did it on rollerskate trucks nailed to a 2 X 4 ...
Nice park! Where's it dude?
Good video. Really detailed
Hey dude
This was mostly filmed in the bowl in Poole and the pool bowl in Newquay.
Hey Jon, thank you for the great videos. Have you tried the Soulboardiy Surfskate deck. You should really look into it and make a video. I am one of the few ones that own one here in the states. There’s no deck like it.
I haven’t tried one sadly, but I look forward to an opportunity!
Hopefully you get around it one day. Keep up the great content. You’re definitely one of my favorite channels. :)
Sick video bro!! Is it still possible to ride a bowl with a surf skate that doesn’t have a kick tail??
Hey Dude, yeah I recon it’d be ace fun. I ride on an old 70s deck sometimes and that has no kick tail?!! ua-cam.com/video/D1775oRGAkM/v-deo.html
Love it barefoot is where it's at!
hello, are you using a carver with c7 or cx axes?? Is that I want to get into bolw and for that I need cx axles but I also want the feeling of surfing of the c7. I don't know what to do and I was hoping you could help me or give me some advice. Thanks and a very nice video!!💥
Hey dude, yeah CX I think. Still plenty loose enough. I just got it cause my mate had one and I liked it?!
Hi Jon, I own a Carver but it came with 68mm wheels instead and black bushings, also my front kingpin sticks out so grinding is not smooth and also I destroyed the nut and kingpin by doing it. I tried reversing the kingpin but sticks out anyways, is the board you tried it, really a Triton or was just the Triton deck?
Yeah dude, everything is stock from the shop as I bought it. The king pin on the front does stick out so I just got a Grinder on it..
Man I can't wait till I'm old enough to buy any skateboard I want
Ha, it’s one of the only benefits 😂
Thanks for the nice video. Did you have any Problems with the tritons protruding kingpin of the front trucks while grinding? This concern keeps me currently off the rails. But you just didn't seem to bother....
Hey dude,
Yeah, it will catch when factory fresh. I got an angle grinder tool and ground it down so it was lower than the hanger. If you check out my latest Surf Skate video Pt3 I do the same with the C5 trucks, I’m not sure why they supply them this way? It will wear down from grinding anyway, so may as well help it along and make it safe !!
ua-cam.com/video/KL6Kt1ghnzA/v-deo.html
@@JonBishopSkate wow thanks for quick answer. In the meanwhile I have already whatched pt2 and pt3. I'm a fan. Next stop: angle grinder 🤙
Great video Jon, would love to get one of these but cant find this model, they all seem to have much shorter wheelbases?
Yeah, I think they measure it from the truck bolts for the specs so this one is billed as 17” WB ?? This exact model is called ‘blue horizon’. I think they do the Triton in different colours etc. The Triton is on the Carver website I think?
www.skatewarehouse.co.uk/carver-triton-31-5-blue-horizon-complete-surf-skate-board-cx.html
For reference of the specs, sadly out of stock here though.
@@JonBishopSkate Thanks dude I'll keep looking!
Ken Ross yeah man. FYI I did pretty much no research when buying, my mate had one and I liked it so much I just got the same lol I’m sure there are a plethora of other options and brands doing the similar stuff?? Let me know how you get on !!
Hi, I ended up getting the triton signal 31 which seems very similar to yours. Did you do anything to modify the front kingpin? Mine seems to stick out by a scary amount!
How'd you get a pump track to your self?the one near me is a continuous conga line of scooter kids,,,great video again mate🛹👍
Hey dude
Yeah, it was a Monday morning in school time so I guess I got lucky !!
I started going to my local one at lunch time instead of after work. Works great.
Jason Arthur perfect !!
If you time your carving foot pressure, exit, and body extension, you can actually gain speed from those tight carves. Pay attention to how he carves in the small bowl. Imagine the potential of speed in a bigger bowl!
I have a carver with the cx4 setup that i will ride in the park sometimes. I dont try to grind at all cuz the kingpin on the front truck sticks out like half and inch higher than the hanger.
I have a grind king kingpin i might try to rig up to fix the problem..I will keep ya posted.
Ah Yeah, I had to do a little work with the file just to make double sure it wouldn’t catch. Seems to work fine though??!
@@JonBishopSkate OK Jon I found the fix.. I bought a grade 8 bolt to match the kingpin size and inverted it so the excess threds stick out in the bottom of the truck and not the hanger... works like a charm and i can grind them now with no worries. The original kingpin doesnt have enough threds to flip cuz I tried that first.
david Fenske boom!! Sounds ace
Is it just me, or is it the best comment section ever?!? Big up yourselves ppl, you're all awesome AF :) Have a great day!
Many thanks everyone, Skating is a great community!!
What bearings do you use?
Btw, great vid! Thanx
Hey Dude
They are Bones Big Balls
@@JonBishopSkate Perfect. I find I'm loosing speed on flat sections due to my bearings. Gonna give the BBB a try. Thank you and keep up the great vids!
Jon, do they sell a teflon tail pad for for under the board on surf skates as to make it easier to Ollie? Cause of the height difference of a traditional board? Thanks
Hey dude, that one sounds like a good old fashioned tinkering in the shed style project !!
@@JonBishopSkate thanks
Hi Jon. Love your videos. Would you consider doing a specific one on drop-ins with a surfskate.
I've been surfing for a long time, love my loaded longboard and just started surfskating but... I really want to get better in the pool. But the front trunk on the smoothstar is sooo lose it gives me second thoughts for dropping in.
Any advice is highly appreciated. Thnx for your vids and the stoke that comes with it.
Hey Dude
Many thanks for the mail.
Question - can you drop in on a skateboard with regular trucks?
If yes - then it's exactly the same, you just need to make sure your feet are dead on the centre line and that your knees are bent. It seems like it won't work, but there is no difference and it works great.
I cover this in broad strokes in my part 2 surf skate video.
ua-cam.com/video/S6hEzvH_m3s/v-deo.html
If no - then I would recommend learning on regular trucks. I touch on the process in my Nose stall/Fakey drop in video.
ua-cam.com/video/RgimKAzo5yU/v-deo.html
I hope this helps.
Best Jon
@@JonBishopSkate this is really really helpful! Thnx heaps!
@@JonBishopSkate if no🤔.. This means that, purely out of safety precautions, I am forced to buy another board😍
