History Today

- Compilation of sketches from the 1993 series Newman And Baddiel In Pieces.
"History Today" was the only sketch from The Mary Whitehouse Experience reprised for the duo's own series. The sketch followed much the same format as before, of two elderly, scholarly professors introducing an historical discussion show on TV, which quickly turned into a barrage of playground-style insults and name-calling. Baddiel played the first of the two professors, who was never named but would introduce the topic of debate for each 'episode', while Newman played Professor F. J. Lewis, Emeritus Professor of History at All Souls' College, Oxford, who would always be the first to start the insults. The first professor would often try to return the discussion to the original topic of debate, but would never achieve much luck as Professor Lewis would continue nonetheless to fire endless playground insults at him, to which the first professor would semi-reluctantly but all too easily resume doing himself. The humour lay largely in the manner in which the professors maintained their well-spoken, formal tones despite the childishness of their insults. Many of the sketches even began with Baddiel's character apologising to the viewer for the previous episode's diversion from the chosen topic. The series of sketches was the inspiration for numerous office/playground copycats to recite its catchphrase of "You see that (insert pathetic, broken, or obsolete object)? That's you that is."

“You see Theresa May when she danced on stage to ABBA?
Embarrassing herself, her family and everyone connected to her or has ever been affiliated with her?”
“I have observed the spectacle”
“That’s you doing your best dance moves to pull the birds that is.
That’s you in ministry of sound on a Sunday morning at 2am throwing some shapes.
Look at me girls, Professor F J Lewis, come and take a ride on my disco stick”.
Still hilarious all these years later. I saw Rob Newman at the Edinburgh Fringe last year and so wanted to attempt a "History Today" greeting but resisted. That's self-restraint, that is........
You see the age of your comment? That is how long it has been since your last sexual interaction which of course wasn't free, that is.
I don't care... because I'm going to Edinburgh Fringe
@@leecrawley9862 You see a dirty, dingy back alley in a decrepit old town? Where nobody has been down in years, except to knife someone. The only things there are some old cardboard boxes that have been melted into puddles of dirty rain, terrible graffiti, and one old, grey dog turd that has been there since the 1980s? It smells of old, broken bricks, and wee.
That's the Edinburgh Fringe.

"You know men that put fruit up each others bottoms...", "yes...", "oh you do!" ... Priceless!!!
"Too late with the hand! Too late with the hand!"
Still just as funny almost 30 years later
"You know like, when you go to nursery school there's always a broken old-type roller skate in the toy box?" "Are one of the wheel bearings seized where it's been left outside in the rain at some point?" "Yes, and the leather straps are hard and crusty with age, and the buckles have begun to rust." "I have witnessed such a device." "That's your million pound supercar, that is. That's your gold-plated Bugatti Veyron. That's what you use when you're lining up on the grid at the British Grand Prix. Oh Hi girls, fancy a trip down to Monte Carlo?"
Deserves more attention.
I love the opening of this audience. The viewers and the audience know exactly what the punchline will be and Baddiel and Newman know we know and are stretching it out as long as they possibly can.
Anticipation works wonders in comedy.
Reminds me of a school trip to a local farm in 1983-One of the pupils pointed to a cow pat and called the teacher over and said “That’s you that is Sir” 😂😂
Ever since I saw these sketches back in day I have incorporated the catchphrase “thats…that is” into as many zingers to multiple recipients as I possibly can and it never, ever gets old. Class 👍🏻
This is great that you collected all the 'History Today' sketches from Newman and Baddiel in pieces.See this compilation of sketches from a complete series...That's great entertainment that is.
Must have watched this 100 times over the last 6 years and it's still just as funny!
32 Years ago, gawd I used to always try to be in to watch this series, I can picture it vividly now.
I'm getting as old as these guys.
Now we live in a time when two Presidential candidates are basically doing this sketch on live TV
You see that Joe Biden?
You see that lump of excrement pushed out by a homeless person in San Francisco?

Back in 2024 😂😂
Grew up watching this. Awesome memories.
Absolutely brilliant! Showing my 13 year old son this and it's cracking him up 😂 😂
I’d forgotten how brilliant this was!! The whole programme was so good and funny, nothing else compared.
going to bed at quarter past five sounds amazing, tbh
I am a member of the antiquarian horological society; the letters page of heir quarterly journal is exactly like this.
Outstanding! Been sat at work watching this with my earphones on and laughing away and getting looks of others in the office! Still brilliant to this day!
I knew what the first punchline was going to be. Everybody does. But what a glorious set up that takes it's time, and therein lies the genius of Newman and Baddiel. Lovely that they appear to be on speaking terms again.
They're not.
You know the person who never knows what to write in the comments section. That's me that is. Great Stuff, thanks for sharing...
Anyone else think Newman's character gets in the better burns?
Agreed. I also think Baddiel's delivery is a little too 'large' at times compared to Newman's softer, more natural delivery, but that's probably just me. (No pun intended.)
"And that's how you drive". Best insult ever.
Absolutely brilliant - Mary Whitehouse experience was sooooo good
14:35 Baddiel trying desperately not to lose it
Lol, Baddiel on a few occasions had to compose himself while doing History today.
great stuff
Same with Robert Newman.
I'd actually forgotten how ferkin funny these two could be!!
"you see that Boris Johnson? Talking about effectively nothing, making awful jokes about serious crises?"
"I have witnessed such a man."
"That's your best mate that is. That's who you bring with you on the pull."
My mum got me into this and now I can't stop thinking about it
This is how the Academic professors debate Brexit on twitter these days.
They're your role models, you have posters of them on your wall.
One of the all time great British sketches.
The humour of incongruity - Armstrong and Miller did it too.
You see those lack of likes on your comment? That’s the number of real life friends you have
F' me, a reference to a 'swatch.' Where have all the years gone.
Ironically Newman and Baddiel look really young here.
A green tea saucer from an institutional tea set 🤣🤣🤣
Love it 😍 thanks for the laugh, 45 this year and still funny 😁
"See an old car without no wheels and no doors in a car breakers yard?"
"Has it been crushed in the car compactor?"
"Yes"
" I have seen such a thing"
"That's your Rolls Royce that is"
As an American, I wished our Presidential debates would be like this.
See that lump of excrement pushed out by a drug crazed homeless person on a sidewalk in San Francisco?

Brilliant comedy
Just brilliant writing from two great actors, just dont get this standard of comedy now. K
Rob Newman was so beautiful.
They were great together until they had their bust up. Still don't know what that was about. And to have it happen when they were on tour?!?!? That must have been awkward. Hopefully one day they can reconcile.
I think much of it was just down to the sheer magnitude of their fame and the pressure it put on them, causing them to become testy with each other over inconsequential things, such as Newman wanting top billing on their shows. Apart from History Today, I think the rest of their touring show was individual performances of stand up and characters they did. I think Newman wanted to go on last and be the 'main event'.
Anyway, they have reconciled in the sense that there's no longer any bad blood between them. They've grown up and moved on with their careers. They bumped into each other one time not too long ago and took a picture together, which I think Baddiel posted on his Twitter.
Of course, I do not want to engage in this particular activity excessively...
That's your that is

It was a shame that Newman and baddiel
