The Mel Blount rule (no contact with a receiver 5 yards from the line of scrimmage) was implemented in 1978 to give receivers a slight advantage on trying to get separation when it comes to the passing game.
1978 was not only the first year of the NFL's 16 game regular season, it was first year of the Wild-Card game between two non-divisional winners and a minimum of 45 players per roster, up from 43.
@36:44 shouldn't have been a flag BB was getting his hdad around whether he'd located the football can't really tell but credit LS for trying to make a play on the ball
@@haroldmccoy6748 You are kicking me in the gut with that! Every time I watch the game, my disappointment remains almost the same. Silly, huh? At least you were happy that 1979 January evening.....
@@topJimmyP1984 I have to agree with that too. Jackie Smith during his career has made that catch 19 of 20. Just so happens the 20th time Smith attempts to make that type of catch he drops it in the biggest game of his career which was in Super Bowl XIII.
Roger Staubach didn’t have to throw a bullet to Jackie Smith. With the Steelers as far away from Smith as The Florida Keys, Staubach could have lofted him the ball for a Touchdown.
@@Jiltedin2007 Still don't know why he didn't throw it out in front of Smith instead of hard and low on his back hip making him stop to try and catch it. The grass looked wet and slippy too. Smith should have caught it but Staubach could have made it a lot easier for him.
Cliff Harris was a day late and a dollar short in big games his entire career. Maybe the worst undeserving Hall of Famer ever. What did he ever do in a Super Bowl that was worth anything except bitch and cry to the officials?
Oh, I don't know. Cliff was 5X All Pro, voted All Decade Team of the 1970s, 2X Super Bowl Champ. To call him the most undeserving HOFer clearly shows you're an amateur in Pro Football knowledge.

The Mel Blount rule. Trying to slow Pittsburgh down.
I had this on VCR as a kid...The music was different..

The NFL MVP as a Rookie? DAMN!
@@michaelleroy9281 Terry Bradshaw won NFL league MVP in 1978 .
The Holy Roller
Probably the most epic highlight music ever created.
Sam Rutigliano now 92 years old, and hopefully still going strong. Always loved his inspiration when he coached the Browns.

Back when the NFL played football.
The head coaches of the teams in the SB Noll & Landry were assistants under the legendary Paul Brown
The first 16 game season and wild cards ( there's no such thing as too much football)
They should have left it at 16 games with just 6 teams per conference making the playoffs.
Battle of the 2 dominant teams of the 70s to be first 3 time SB Champion.
True!!!
'78 was when the NFL modernized big time.

Two words.... Earl Campbell!
Year of my birth. 43 years ago.
?
An excellent, exciting season. Near perfect, except the final score in Super Bowl XIII
The final SB score is what made the 1978 season perfect .

What's wrong with the final score in SB XIII? At least is wasn't 13-3 ( SB LIII)
@@michaelleroy9281 The outcome, not point totals------The men in the "Black Hats" had an amazing run of events in the game, and won in the end.
@@romelovesdan It was the dropped catch by Jackie Smith and the bad PI call on Benny Barnes from there America's team was done
The NFL was great in 78 2 all time plays in September and November
The drop by Jackie Smith was thrown too low by Staubach. Throw it hip height and he catches it no problem.
I agree. it was not totally Jackie Smith's fault the reason he dropped that ball.
It was definatly catchable tho, 19 out of 20 he does.
