There is so much more to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis than people realize. Their album was so good, it wasn't just corny music but there was such a significant message in each song. Till this day Neon Cathedral is still my favorite song.
The fact that people bashed and bullied Rebecca Black in the 2010s despite "Friday" having more sensible lyrics than Ylvis' "What Does the Fox Say" is beyond me.
I think a reason aside from the vocals (both weren't very great) was that everyone saw Friday as a song that wanted to be taken seriously, while What Does the Fox Say didn't really hide it's intention to be more of a parody than anything else. That's at least what most of the people I know said about this topic. I also prefer What does the fox say over Friday, but to this day I'm still disgusted by all these people hating Rebecca Black and bullying her. As a black man (not speaking for everyone to be clear), white privilege II made me respect Macklemore immensely, much more on a personal level than any other white rapper. Who else has openly acknowledged that their success is predicated on a system of oppression? I don’t find his serious stuff to be overly melodramatic to me, maybe it’s because I understand that rap should never be criticized for being political, it’s a forum for black thought of all kind, and if the Mack has acknowledged that it’s not his forum to run or be on top of, then by all means I wanna keep hearing what he’s got to say. He’s hit on issues close to me, and close to many others near to me, he’s a decent rapper, and the only backlash I’ve seen him receive is over things he can’t control, or had no part in or nitpicks in his wording. I'm tired of all these youngsters saying how thrift shoping just recently became a trend becuase of tik tok. It started to become popular in the early 2010s leading into the mid 2010s, especially after this song became a hit. It has been popular since.
It got big because of the recession, that's why the song took off--thrift shopping was looked down on until the recession, and the hipster look became popular because in 2009, it was a cheap look. Eventually that stopped being true, and people turned on the hypocrisy of that style when used clothes became more expensive and doc martens got too costly again
I'm in my mid 40s & can confirm that thrift shops existed pre Macklemore. There was a wave of popularity in 70s vintage clothing in the early 90s...where do you think we GOT those items?
I lived in a homophobic country. When I was in 11th grade one of my classmate who were an ally recommended me to listen to Same Love and it changed my life.
I grew up in Seattle, graduated high school in 2009, I knew of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis when they were local, they did their concerts at small venues, parks, an all day sound session with KEXP Radio, shoutouts to KJR radio and they performed at countless Mariner games, especially performing their hit “My Oh My” on the pitchers mound after Our beloved Mariner game announcer Dave Niehaus passed away. I went to a few of their small concerts, I was at all the Mariner games they performed at. I wasn’t a diehard fan or obsessed before they were famous, I just liked that they were local and had relatable music that was easy to listen to. They weren’t big shots yet. Then Thrift Shop happened. The Heist was released. My favorite tracks were White Walls and Cowboy Boots. I went to the final concert night of 2012 at the Key Arena, saw them LIVE. And all of a sudden they got BIG. Really BIG. Nation wide tours, then Canada and UK, then Europe and Asia. Finally they did a second album but it didn’t fare well to my liking, the love was gone and it was all about the money. Mack got bad haircuts and relapsed back to popping pills and heroin while his wife and daughter waited his return to their Seattle home, but between rehab stays Mack continued to travel world wide for concerts and fame and money. He didn’t care about making good music or sharing great words for other to listen to, he only wanted the money and the drugs to fuel his habits. Now he has 2 kids and is staying at home more bc of the pandemic, but I certainly hope he doesn’t do anymore big concert tours bc he is so old news. Macklemore’s first 2 independent albums were great, awesome. The Heist was his goldrush to fame. It was a great album, but every song after that was total toilet water and didn’t deserve to be played. He sold out. I hope he stays quiet for the rest of his “whatever career” that he has left.
And We Danced.... I will never forget watching him put on a wig and a cape and perform And We Danced for the incoming freshmen at UW. He's core Seattle, I will always have love for him.
That's a name I haven't heard of since 7th grade. I know they released a song "Downtown" back in 2015 but it wasn't as popular as "Thrift Shop", "Can't Hold Us" or "Same Love". Did they even release a new album after that era?
It's crazy cuz the Same Love song is a song that you can totally see someone making it today. So you can technically say that they were ahead of their time
I’m from Seattle and hadn’t heard of Macklemore until “My oh my”, which I still love. Also love the video for “The Town”, just for the concert flyer for Fat Boys, Boogie Boys, Toddy T, and Rappin Duke at the beginning because I was at that show.
I am a black woman and I love me some Macklemore. I've always found him nice and genuine. Yeah. He didn't deserve that grammy but I like his music. I am not a rap fan but I can get behind his music.

@@asktheglutenfreechef3072 this comment has my white person seal of approval because it’s the rude, unabated truth
I completely forgot Ryan Lewis existed tbh. Like if he wasn’t mentioned in this video I wouldn’t have thought of him as Macklemore’s success at all lmao
They've had so many great tracks: Thrift Store, Can't Hold Us, Downtown, Glorious, and others. I think they're amazing artists and I hope they'd make a big comeback one day.
They're back!
I still listen to Can't Hold Us to this day. The perfect track for the Summer 😎
It’s also worth mentioning that he had his first daughter in May 2015 and is now expecting his third baby sometime this summer. He loves being a dad and I’m sure his dedication to his role as a father has played a pretty big part in the music he’s made since 2014/15.
I really miss how everything used to be so light hearted and people felt accepted. We got a lot of work to do.
When were things ever lighthearted???
@@prxttyvee_293 I'm waiting for the answer 'cause...what?? 😅
Dafuq? Where have you been living?
Are you like 13? Things were never light hearted
What happened to floRida?
There is so much more to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis than people realize. Their album was so good, it wasn't just corny music but there was such a significant message in each song. Till this day Neon Cathedral is still my favorite song.
And I love that they actually did think about important messages for in their songs.
Their peak is when the Grammy’s really died.
After the grammys snubbed kendrick i haven't even herd of macklemore
She didn't deserve all of this just because her song wasn't something certain people wanted, but that sadly happens when you give people the power to hide behind a username... Hope she is okay and that she doesn't suffer from it still...
She Was A Teenage Girl During Friday, That Alone Made People Hate Her
I loved, and still love, both songs lol.
them with the grammys reminds me waaaay too much of billie and how everyone was sooo mad at her??? for?? winning???? like baby girl had no say in that!! plus she seems like the sweetest hooman ever. i was so upset when ppl were giving her so much shit for it
That rap category that year of the Grammys was insane
Can you do a video about what happened to Pia Mia? She had some hits here and there but have disappeared from the mainstream.
pia has such a beautiful voice but the music she chooses to make doesn't showcase that very well in my opinion, i used to be such a huge fan. last time i checked for her she was doing onlyfans now
@@stephanie6869 oh i see. She still making her coins so good for her .
@@elroe327 oh definitely. but honestly would love to see honest or anyone else do a video on her detailing her entire career cause it's always been crazy to me how she had all the "right" things going for her in terms of industry connections, social status, voice, looks etc. and was able to pop her head into mainstream media but not enough to actually capture everyone's attention to wanna look into her and keep checking for her.
@@stephanie6869 fr she honestly should be big by now. She had everything. Can sing, dance, is pretty was friends with the Kardashians ( if that helps lol) that's why it's so confusing as to why she isn't a mainstream artist.
@@stephanie6869 she will never be respected as an artist now that she’s doing only fans but she should still try.
They could’ve got artist of the year or song of the year but def not rap album they had wayy better hip hop albums that year at this point the Grammys should let America pick the Grammy committee are biased
Disappointed "Dance Off" with Idris Elba wasn't mentioned in this lol
I feel like everyone would talk about their comeback cause everyone is a sucker for nostalgia lately and them being a big part of many people’s upbringing would probably boost their recognition
You didn’t talk about his substance abuse.
Same love still makes me cry. We all have our struggles but who we love shouldn’t be one of them.
Just seems like much ado about a guy who’s made some strong statements. It always felt like a leak over from the more irrational side whenever I heard people talking smack
Music dont got a color to it
Also this isnt jim crow no one is being oppressed today
That whole “system” shit is all liberal bullshit
Exactly man, let them do their thing. Enjoy or don't.
I actually really like them, hope they come back!
Same love still remains an anthem btw, even after all these years
Downtown goes hard, and Can't Hold Us still gets me in a very good mood, i think they have a lot more to offer and really hope they put out some singles at least, but i don't expect them coming back any time soon
It’s kinda sad he’s still talking about the whole Grammy thing to this day. Feels like he let that whole thing define his career from then on
While I don’t think the heist should have won either I definitely didn’t think he should have apologized for it an let it break him like that he won regardless an should have embraced the moment
Macklemores voice does something to me. I just love hearing that man speak. 😫😍
White walls will always be my favorite from them
I went to Macklemore’s concert two years ago at a festival and it was one of the best thing ever!!
He’s a great performer 🔥
I'm tired of all these youngsters saying how thrift shoping just recently became a trend becuase of tik tok. It started to become popular in the early 2010s leading into the mid 2010s, especially after this song became a hit. It has been popular since.
Wait what who's saying that wtf😭😭
It got big because of the recession, that's why the song took off--thrift shopping was looked down on until the recession, and the hipster look became popular because in 2009, it was a cheap look. Eventually that stopped being true, and people turned on the hypocrisy of that style when used clothes became more expensive and doc martens got too costly again
Lol lol secondhand stores have been around FOREVER
@@Zoe-ko3us teenagers on TikTok think they invented everything, including 90s clothes and BLM. It’s very weird
I'm in my mid 40s & can confirm that thrift shops existed pre Macklemore. There was a wave of popularity in 70s vintage clothing in the early 90s...where do you think we GOT those items?
I was just asking my husband what happened to Macklemore. Thanks for the answer.
so weird that i was listening to one of their songs before this video dropped
"starting over" is a great song about his replapse being put into the spotlight and guilt
Same love is my favourite from them.
I love the way that they made music. Very unique and true to them selves.
I lived in a homophobic country. When I was in 11th grade one of my classmate who were an ally recommended me to listen to Same Love and it changed my life.
I miss Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis.
I do.
So
2010s were filled with funny club music, it seems like an entirely different genre itself
Wow Macklemore looks sooo different
he a father now lol
Thank you for another great video! Always look forward to your uploads!
I remember trying to write a Minecraft parody to "Can't Hold Us" LMAO 😂
Thanks for uploading this deep dive. I'm from Seattle and grew up with his brother
I love me some Kendrick but I can’t lie the Heist is great album. Best duo and great production. While independent they did good.
Most musicians, if they're lucky, get to be relevant for 2-3 years and have 2, maybe 3 successful albums. It's just the nature of music.
That's a name I haven't heard of since 7th grade. I know they released a song "Downtown" back in 2015 but it wasn't as popular as "Thrift Shop", "Can't Hold Us" or "Same Love". Did they even release a new album after that era?
“same love” makes me cry to this day
Lol who's being recommended this after they got together recently
6 months later and we get ryan as a cameo in "Next Year". I think they are coming back.... and in a very big way
Who’s here after the king came back
It's crazy cuz the Same Love song is a song that you can totally see someone making it today. So you can technically say that they were ahead of their time
Maclemore used his music to talk about deep issues like addiction, poverty, and racism.
saw Macklemore on their 2nd tour in 2015/2016 and it was INCREDIBLE ; I’m still a fan
Me too. I miss Macklemore.
Honest, can you do a video about Alexis Jordan? I remember her being everywhere, and then she wasn't
Mack is still around he takin time off to be a family man I respect that🙏
The pace in your way of talk is oddly soothing
I’m from Seattle and hadn’t heard of Macklemore until “My oh my”, which I still love. Also love the video for “The Town”, just for the concert flyer for Fat Boys, Boogie Boys, Toddy T, and Rappin Duke at the beginning because I was at that show.
Can’t Hold is my favorite song of 2013 can’t forget about White Walls and Wings too
Anytime I see the music video for Thrift Shop, I automatically think of the store Tuesday Morning.
Can you please do a video on Zayn and his career so far?
@Glen Warne i think he has the potential to make a comeback but yeah...it seems like he flopped a while ago,.
I am a black woman and I love me some Macklemore. I've always found him nice and genuine. Yeah. He didn't deserve that grammy but I like his music. I am not a rap fan but I can get behind his music.
Both of their solo careers led them to Kesha lol
Do a video on whether the Brit awards flopped or not (May 11th)
They're icons for Independent artist.
I will never forget them winning album of the year over so many other talented artist
Such a slap in the face to so many POC artists and black rappers
It’s insane how he won over Kendrick, and then texted him with some really backhanded stuff
it wasn’t album of the year it was best rap album...he was against Kanye drake Kendrick and WON
@@berserk1437 the album was better, don’t bring race into everything
@@ablanomor3050 ding dong your opinion is wrong
They were independent and maclemore had substance abuse issues. i hope they come back. I love their songs. They feature other underrated artists too who are unsigned
can you make a video bout nicki minajs absence and the llc party
Ah, nostalgia, i remember thrift shop was the first rap song i ever searched for
I personally think they had their moment at the correct time. I still listen to their music today and it will always be apart of our generation 💙
I was JUST listening to Thrift Shop lol this video came at a fitting time
Man i remember listing these guy's in middle now in 4 day's i walk on stage and finally be done with school 🤣
The only thing you missed to mention is that Rayn is so fine :3
Finally! I’ve been wondering this for years and could not find anything on them.
I've seen both of them as a duo live and Macklemore alone live. Hell, unfortunately I got stuck on their performance in the crowd front row at a festival but ended up getting a drum stick from the stage and having a blasr. They are amazing live artists and showmen, especially Macklemore, we need to value that because not many unfortunately on today's scene still are
