This is a beautiful version. The original by the Drones is among my favorite songs of all time. Written after the passing of lead singer Gareth Liddiard's mother, it was voted the greatest Australian song of all time by the band's contemporaries in 2009 and is now widely considered a classic.
I have suffered constant losses in my life and they just seem to keep creeping up on me. Depression is a daily wound that gets deeper and deeper. I have one friend in the world. I long for the day that Gods hand comes and pulls me out of this hell. No one understands the grief I feel.
This is by far the best version of this song that I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. The piano is flawless in its fundamental tone and play and your voice carries through the song with sorrow and dignity. The version touches me deeply and, particularly because of your voice and your special way of singing it, corresponds very much to my own personal interpretation of the lyrics. Thank you so much, Mrs Higgins! I would be very happy to be able to hear the song on Spotify too, I have a playlist there where this song would be the crown jewel.
This is the very reason why Missy Higgins is my favourite artist. She's one of the rare artist who always sound better live than touched up in the studio.
Jeez Missy. How can I have never heard you before now? This is pure, beautiful and so very powerful. I now feel I've caught up and have a lot of catching up to do. A true, shining star. Thank you for everything I have not yet heard but know I will love
Simply beautiful Missy, just a shame you didn't play this last week at Hamer Hall. I was hoping for this one and for Old Fitzroy, but never-the-less you were brilliant and it was good to see back on stage at home.
Standing on the deck watching my shadow stretch The sun pours my shadow upon the deck The waters licking round my ankles now There ain't no sunshine way way down I see the sharks out in the water like slicks of ink Well, there's one there bigger than a submarine As he circles I look in his eye I see Jonah in his belly by the campfire light See the albatross up in the windy lofts He gets to beating his wings while he sleeps it off I hear the jettisoned cries from his dreams unkind Gets to whippin' my ears like a riding crop The captain once as able as a fink dandy He's now laid up in the galley like a dried out mink He's laying dying of thirst and he says or I think Well, we're gonna be alone from here on in Well you are all my brothers, and you have been kind But what were you expecting to find? Now your eyes turn inwards, countenance turns blank And I'm floating away on a barrel of pain It looks like nothing but the sea and sky remain I sing na na nana nananana na Na na nana nananana na A harpoon's shaft is short and wide A grappling hook's is cracked and dry I said, why don't you get down in the sea Turn the water red like you want to be? Cause if I cry another tear I'll be turned to dust No the sharks won't get me they don't feel loss Just keep one eye on the horizon man, you best not blink They're coming fin by fin until the whole boat sinks Fin by fin Fin by fin Fin by fin by fin by fin
Love the video and the voice Missy, loved your music for many years:) I just uploaded an Australian song I suppose it is, "Walkabout country" I would love for you to check it out! too many "loves" in that sentence ha ha

Favorite artist since 2005. Ur amazing Missy 💛💛💛
Dios Missy, amo tu voz. Se necesitan más cantantes así, que muestren el sentimiento sólo con su voz. Saludos desde Chile. (:

Hey Missy, write something funny but serious at the same time. CHALLENGE!
Missy...go grab Gareth and work out a duo!
Superb cover, only eclipsed by Ben Salter... in my humble opinion.
Gareth did it better...
Great hair cut and all but when I saw u a Brisbane you had long no offence but I liked long hair a little better
Why don't you grow some then??
Lovely
