- This film, The Zoochotic Report, was compiled from footage gathered by Born Free’s co-founder, the late Bill Travers, and his team between 1990 and 1993. It is an invaluable archive of what they saw on public display then.
Sadly, similar conditions still exist for many wild animals in zoos around the world today - nearly 30 years on. To find out more about the latest work of the Born Free Foundation, please go to our website www.bornfree.org.uk or visit our sister organisation Born Free USA at www.bornfreeusa.org
The word Zoochotic, coined by Bill, is now widely used to describe the psychological state of animals confined in captivity who display stereotypic behaviour.
"In every zoo I visited when compiling the Zoochotic Report, I witnessed some sort of abnormal behaviour" Bill Travers, Co-Founder of Zoo Check
These animals pacing and biting are living in some shitty enclosures. I would probably pace too.
What is really sad and tragic is that people support this kind of animal abuse by paying money to see them.
Unfortunately many zoos around the world still exhibit animals in terrible welfare conditions, and in straight violation of the 5 Freedoms... Only a minority are accredited and follow minimal standards (it is said less than 10% in the US for instance), and even fewer are really tied to relevant conservation projects.
We can all work together at pushing for new standards and regulations, and this starts by shifting our perception of captivity. This comes with knowledge, educating the public about the many aspects of wildlife from behavioral studies, physiology, animal welfare science etc.
As well we need to reconnect with a compassionate side. Empathy is prevalently absent and not encouraged in many captive animal institutions. Institutions that are instead still centered on the human experience.
A lot to do for sure... But we can do it... together.
Haven't we had enough of zoos? I understand that people want to see wild animals - but these are not what we want to see, and with media as it is now, we can watch them in their natural environments. Not for Entertainment.
Zoochosis is tragic :'(
It's not tragic. Its a natural consecuence of human's caging an animal. A tragedy is an accident. This isn't an accident
