Ensuring a good welfare for animals housed in zoos, is not an easy job. It might not even be something we will ever really get a perfect grip on. Animal species have evolved over many years and their physical, physiological, social and behavioral traits have been developed in order for them to survive as best as they can in their natural environment.
In captivity, animals may face a number of challenges which evolution has not prepared them for and disables the animal to fulfill their behavioral needs. The absence of these, climate, diet, the size and characteristics of their enclosure or the fact that they have to rely on humans for their every need can cause an animal to feel stressed in which it starts to perform a stereotypic behavior. Repetitive, abnormal behavior is often regarded as an indicator of poor welfare and is studied as a coping mechanism, and measures of stress which can potentially go on to cause brain dysfunction. I believe, that the display of abnormal behavior patterns are not recognized enough by the public eye. That is why I have decided to make this documentary to educate you about what lies behind these stereotypic behaviors which we can easily identify, but might not have given a further thought about, or brought a negative judgement upon when visiting the zoo. The study of stereotypic behavior is complicated with many important factors that determines the health of a captive animal. 'Zoochosis' will bring you the whole picture of how animals experience living in a stressful and unnatural environment, and how it effects their mental and natural life.

Ok I don't want to bash anyone or zoos in general. I understand that some people believe zoos benefits the lives of animals, while many others believe the opposite. I personally do not believe animals belong in zoos, especially predators who rely on hunting or scavenging to get their next meal. However, I also understand that people think there is no better way to educate children and others about the animals and about the endangered species who we need to save. My argument to this, though, is that the animals living in the zoos who are suffering, not from the lack of care but from the basic idea of being holed up where they don't have the freedom of decision, do not behave like their own members of their species who are living in the wild. I believe zoos and aquariums need to be rethought and redesigned to be structured around the animals' natural habitats, so that people are taken to the animals in their wild habitats rather than taking the animals out of their habitats to be shown to humans. I could go into so much more but I'll leave this here for now.
I just wanted to remind anyone reading that there is a better way to go about having a civil argument with someone that doesn't include yelling or insults. People will listen if you give your facts and opinions in a calm, respectful manner. Thanks for reading this far! I think a large part after stress and everything. I think its space they need way more space to roam. Some animals walk for hours which keeps there mind thinking in the wild. Like tigers. Elephants. Bears. lions. Ect.. Then they put them in these small pens n wonder why they pace back and forth. Its cause they are bored n have no space to roam and stimulate their minds.. Just my opinion

That "honorary professor" really got under my skin. His theories just don't hold weight in my opinion. Especially that airport one. The stress of air travel can be terrifying, the idea of missing your flight can be so stressful unless you're super rich. Just imagine being under that kind of stress constantly. This is all staying with his story, personally I think using an airport is abit "first world problem" lol.

It's just an example to address the issue that we don't know the reason to the behaviour in itself so we don't really understand it in the first place. Yes. Also, if I'm at an airport it is usually because I chose to enter the airport. I chose to book a flight, board the flight, etc. The animals in zoos don't have these choices. They can't just say "I'd like to exit/not enter the zoo enclosure, please."

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, all of you. I have seen some very sad animals in zoos so I refuse to go to one. A long time ago it wouldn't have mattered if I had spoken up because there were no provisions for change. I could see the sadness in the animal's eyes. And to say that what the animal feels can't be determined, that's just not right. It's in their eyes and any feeling person can feel it, and the animal is transferring his plight and sadness to the human and communicating with the human so the human will do something about its plight. So sad, hopefully things will be better soon for these poor animals.

My thing is how long is it going to take people to understnad that animals are spiritual beings on this planet like us, they feel the same emotions, the feel the same pain, just cannot express it the way that we do. They should have the same, or more rights that we do because they do not have a voie, we are their voice, and we all need to speak louder for them. So sad that we are the most intelligent animals on this plant, yet we are so lost about what life is and what it is about. We as a whole really need to change how we live on this planet. We are distroying our home and theirs! shame

We have no idea which animal, bird, even insect is smarter than us because we're too stupid to understand them! They understand us much better than we understand them... who's the stupider one? I personally don't support zoo's due to me being vegan, but wow....documentaries as this can break your heart. I feel horrible for these caged beautiful beings and feel even worse that I am unable to end their captive life
If you have a look at war veterans experiencing shell shock, it the same reaction to extreme trauma. That’s what these animals experience 24/7. Animal captivity needs to end!
Animal sanctuaries are great, zoo's are a prison yet the animal has never done a crime. We know humans go insane in solitary confinement yet these people don't correlate that with these animals.
There are good zoos and bad zoos. The greatest thing most animals need is lots of room and an environment as close to natural conditions. Don't forget, some animals are in zoos because the natural place they came from has left them in danger of extinction due to poachers. A great number in zoos are there so we don't lose them and there's evidence it works. It's sad they can't be different.

Zoos that are made into genuine santuaries and/or on the endangered species protective program that actually care for the animals are grand. If you see shit like this however, it's a warning sign that it's bad conditions

1. So if you kept your child locked in a room all their life that would make it cool just because it's all they know? That's messed up thinking.

Extinction is not a fate I would wish on any species, especially in my lifetime. Zoos are helping to prevent species extinction; I would rather a species still exist in captivity than cease existing entirely. Again, extinction is forever.

These animals are doing the repetitive behaviours so often in captivity, you know it’s an issue. Children who have been neglected will also do repetitive behaviours as well, watch the Romanian orphan documentaries and you will see that we aren’t as different as animals.

it’s not as simple and easy to just to release them into the wild. The animals will suffer because they have become depended on human interaction and care. Nobody really wants to see them in captivity however we as beings are selfish and have demolished most of the wild that’s left. It’s our fault they are in captivity.

Hi, I'm Hot Rod you are dumb they can be kept in animal sanctuaries instead more humane then zoos.
I think The catch-22 on this issue is that if we want to help save animals, zoos can be helpful. This can include breeding programs, raising awareness, raising money, and saving individuals from being killed. But the other side of it is that it's a terrible place for animals, from the smallest bug to the largest mammal. They are NOT MEANT to be in a zoo. And maybe not even in a wildlife park (depends). They should be out in the wild but how can they when we destroy their environment? I don't go to zoos but I do support research and conservation. I think we should get people excited to save the original environment and get these animals out of zoos. And with technology today, installing cameras with live-web streaming would be an even better way for people to see animals. And if they want to see them in real life, then go to them to travel the world, or just be content that they are alive and well.
People say animals in captivity is cruel are also the same people whom says, "this is MY pet, I like to keep them captive but I spoil them and give them a better life so it's okay"
Think about it in this way: the animals have natural instincts sure, but they don't actually know what it's like to live in the wild due to being in captivity, therefore they would die alot faster in the wild, whether that be to other animals, or to poaching.

@@thejack9178Bruh, please keep some information about the Drive through Safari Parks. Also, the death ratio of animals in the wild is a lot more than they in the zoo. The reason could simply be anything, like natural causes, territorial fights, human animal conflict, etc. Also, I'd suggest you to once go through the definition of zoos. It's not the exotic animal menageries. Instead, it is a park where many kinds of wild animals are kept so that people can look at them and where they are bred, studied and protected. Also, due to population growth and urbanisation many animal species are endangered in wilds. Try to understand my point. Humans can go to any extent, and these creatures are meant to be conserved. We must not always think about a thing in a negative way!

All Animal sanctuaries except one have never been able to get up to the standards set by the AZA.
Honestly, many animal sanctuaries are worse because they aren't as regulated.
I go to natural parks and reservations. My favorites are Big Cypress and Everglades. Such diversity.

Animals needs are specific to their specific environments. Each animals needs will vary even animals of the same species in my opinion. You will always have to consider the pros and cons and live with the shame even unknown of keeping animals in captivity. Certain species with widespread ranging habits should probably not be captive and seem to be held for the numbers they bring at the front gates..
There's no pros, only cons to stealing animals from their home and families and holding them against their will. The only pro is the money the zoo makes off the backs of kidnapped animals. The zookeepers in this "documentary" know what I'm talking about.
Most animals in zoos these days were born in captivity; you're generally not allowed to take animals from the wild anymore. And certain species do very well in captivity; the vast majority of birds, reptiles, amphibians and small-to-medium sized mammals breed incredibly well in captivity and tend to live long, healthy lives. It's only a few animals with which there are problems and, most of the time, these can be taken into account. There are some species (e.g. cetaceans) that should never be kept in captivity, but those are the exceptions, rather than the rule.

mindmonkey00 I have this crezy idea that animals should live free. So no there is no reason to keep the anmials in a cage because someone wana go there and watch for an hour while eating ice cream or popcorn.
Did you watch the documentary from begining to end. The animal behaviorists brought up some fantastic points about some animals like lemurs and usual prey like antelope thriving in captivity while predators like lions and polar bears would be distressed and show signs of developing mental illness. I used to hate zoo's but then I thought about what they said and trusted their word because they would know what an animal wants more than most animal rights activists. I'm truly surprised everyone here still holds that biased viewpoint despite the fact that their given new information that question that viewpoint.
Unfortunately zoos are necessary. Captive breeding programs have saved countless animals from hunters' guns. Ranging from the giant panda to addax to the american burying beetle.
Zoos aren't ideal, but many are trying to give their animals the best life possible, while also teaching the public about animals they may never otherwise see or care about.

It definitely is. This is so sad, and do not support any zoos unless they rescue and rehabilitate the animals, and there is lots of room to roam.

wow, I can't watch this all the way. We lock these animals up and now we are auguring what cause their stress. Animal's natural stress is none of our business if we leave them alone in the wild.
All sentient beings require freedom to exist. While zoology does some good i'm sure, but to keep any animal captive for its existence born into it or captured is just a hard reality to swallow. I had a better time visiting nonhuman animals as a guest at their natural environment. Those walks in the Everglades and Big Cypress were better than any park, zoo or aquarium. Some of them would even sit next to you, if you are well-behaved. ^_^ They are just as curious of us as we are of them.

I hate to inform people but animals live in our world as much as we do to them. With all the modern-day gadgets and modern comforts of modern day living has offered, I did ask to live in. There must be a way to enjoy the zoos and educate the public on these animals in their habitat. I think we both are losing a lot both human and animals because of our modernization in society.

Some human beings cannot cope with being confined in solitary confinement for multiple years. Some tend to go crazy. But we expect animals to cope with being locked up in cages. Why is it that different animals are experiencing the same kind of behaviors i.e. rocking back and forth pacing self mutilation alapecia and the look of pure sadness. Their faces tell you they are depressed. Someone said that they don't know if animals know if they're experiencing pain or some assinine garbage like that. It might not even been in this particular documentary.and I don't care to go back and find out if it was or not. But it was said and that was the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Elephants mourn the loss of one their own. Primates will adopt orphaned members of their group. They will mourn and carry a dead infant around for days. I ssen a documentary when a lion adopted a dear or antelope, I don't recall what kind of animal it was but it was one it would normally prey upon, until another lion killed and ate it. My point is if animals can feel empathy they damn sure can feel pain, anger, sadness, happiness, fear and rejection. The list can go on and you ppl need to stop with the gibberish your trying to spew in order to make yourselves feel justified in enslaving others you feel are less than you.

This is no different than the pets we love in our own home. Many of them want to explore what's outside but we keep them as domestic pets who serve us. Many of them still love to hunt Even though we feed them.
When i have a cat came to my house i usually take care of them and feed them as mostly the cats looks likey need help and such.But after that its always free to them to leave or not which takes about 1 full year idk why.But ngl it kinda felt lonely for a while after they left
that’s one of the dumbest things i’ve ever heard. the pets we normally have are domesticated. these are wild animals with no adaptations to captivity. and any good pet owner would give their pet the stimuli they need to feel fulfilled, meanwhile these animals are given nothing except the bare minimum to stay alive. two COMPLETELY different things
@@mclovin9296 I kinda agree with you, but I have seen many wild animals become domesticated. Dogs and cats make up the majority of pets in the American household. However, I know people who owns raccoons and monkeys as pets as well. I know how people feel about wild animals as pets, but things have changed in the past 20 years. Even though, these animals don't make the best pets, some people are gifted to training and keeping exotic pets. I believe it's none of our business if people have the means and money to care for these animals. I have seen people do unbelievable tricks that will blow your mind with these animals. UA-cam has made everyone and critic or animal expert from all 4 corners of the globe. With the many human trafficking concerns and abuse within our own species, it amazes me how quickly people can organize a ban or raise millions of dollars to save some animal, often times is overwhelmingly overpopulated. This push to have animals rights equal to human rights is very scary. Eventually, we will lose our rights to hunt or fish if man don't't fight back at the insanity.
@@wilburmcbride8096 i completely agree! there are a lot of exceptions to what i said, especially with those who are trained and licensed to care for exotic pets. my point though is with zoos and owners that don’t give the animal what they need because exotic animals need a lot more than the average pet, not being domestic. and as much as im against poaching and unnecessary poor treatment of animals, i am a fellow anti vegan so i agree with you that instead of acting like every exotic animal in captivity ever needs liberation, focus on real issues in our species first, then actual dangers for other species next.
Lol that’s nothing comparable. Do you see your dog or cat pacing back and forth? If your answer is yes than I’d likely call animal cruelty on you, because that’s not normal for a house pet. I originally thought this was some sort of anti-zoo propaganda, but I truly enjoyed this documentary. It was very objective, and it caused me to think more deeply about the issue of zoos.

To me, it seems as if most of the researchers in this short film are trying to justify and make sense of the behavior of animals kept in captivity.. The man with the glasses really said, certain animals such as lemurs, adapt better in captivity, therefore making it more appropriate for them to be in zoos, opposed to animals such as polar bears.. a complete flaw in his reasoning. ALL of these animals are WILD animals, and no matter the size or species, they’d thrive best in their NATURAL habitat.. it all boils down to money. Zoos make billions of dollars each year! A man’s wealth is more valuable than an animals freedom in this world, right? It’s so inhuman. The fact that these, “experts” are trying to pick and choose what’s right and wrong for these exploited animals, just shows their greed and selfishness. They know it’s wrong! No matter how “great” of an enclosure an animal is in, it’s NOT natural, and everyone in this film knows it. Why not rid of zoos completely? To the point where research on “zoochosis” doesn’t have to exist. That won’t happen because zoos bring in so much revenue. The power is in the hands of the consumers.. but as long as people remain uneducated, and view animals as inferior, zoos will always be an issue. I pray for a better world, for every beautiful creature living on this earth!

Yeah so the kinds of "experts" who performed experimental electro shock therapy and lobotomies and so on per the textbooks - these types are best kept in libraries, offices and labs. CARE giving of all kinds is for the most caring and gentle hearts among us. One chap in this video should not be anywhere near defenseless creatures who need human empathy, protection and CARE.

Maybe off point. According to Buddhism, every human and animal has buddha nature. This is a very deep subject but, in essence, this means that at a deep level we have an innate purity.
We can't know exactly how an animal experiences positive emotions, but when a mother selflessly protects her child from a predator out of love or an animal saves the life of another, we can understand that this love and compassion is a manifestation of a deeper purity and is therefore very similar to the experiences humans have in these circumstances.
Have you ever seen a kitten or lamb leap with joy? Or a mother cow cry for days after they steal her baby away at a dairy farm? Or crows or elephants or monkeys mourning their dead, refusing to leave the body? Of course they experience the same emotions we do. I think people must be selfish pricks not to want to realize this.

After reading some of the comments I think maybe what anthropomorphism is and why it's not good to apply it to other animals should be something everyone's taught about at some point. Or even something people should just have the common sense to realize. Just because you want something doesn't mean a different animal necessarily wants it too. Just because that animal wants something doesn't mean it's gonna be good for them, or the rest of their species.
Animals that live socially aren't going to be happy alone. animals with large territories to wander aren't gonna be happy in a small cage without much to do. animals with bad health and self injury and dying early and not mating and other negative, unhealthy, and unnatural behaviors aren't healthy and happy. it's both common sense and science

It depends on what zoo's your talking about places like zoo Miami have wide open space animals to Rome and all the animals look happy

How to start a zoo that ISN'T animal abuse nor captivity.
1. Don't hit, Smack, Punch, Kick, Or do anything to hurt the animal even if you are playing around with it.
2. Big cages, Plus dig holes for dens, And brothers/Sisters/moms/Best friends in the same thing as the first one.
3. Feed the animal often (Of course :D)
4. Put some stuff for them to play in in their big cages, Also if the animals like water, Put some water in a hole.
5. Make sure none of the animals are sick
6. Don't let anyone that doesn't work at the place feed them (You don't know what they could've done to the food)
7. MAKE IT FEELS LIKE HOME

I wish my comment would go to the world, Though it may not. I don't really like zoos that much cause the animals are being kept in cages. The only way for the animal to be happy is for it to let it free into the wild.
+Flopafe AJ But maybe some zookeepers do and there isn't much we can do when 1 mammal on 4 is in danger of extinction because of human action, if you want to make a change, you must or try to preserve wild habitats or even create new ones or try to sensibilise people on the consequences of their lifestyle on nature or finally just get into politics and change the economic programs to limit nature destruction in the economic system...

"Homesick"? Really? Pretty much every animal at my local zoo was born in captivity (with the elephants, they were actually pretty much all born there). They're not wild and they never have been.

Sadly Zoos and parks are the only safe place for animals now a days......most of the wild animals in the wild are watching 24/7 because of poachers.....it’s sad but there is no safe place anymore cause of Humanity :’( soon the only place we’ll be able to see some of these animals will be in zoos and parks in museums....it’s sad but true :’(
I loved this documentary. I am not a fan of zoos, but I respect the fact that people are trying to help the animals' welfare. All these comments are so negative and not to the point of the documentary. Animals born in captivity don't know what they don't know. Therefore, they may have these instincts but they don't know how to use them. They don't know how to survive. The people in this documentary are not saying that zoos are natural. Also, the human race is removing the wild. We are destroying it to build cities and homes, and killing animals for trophies. This is why there is barely a wild to send them back too, and if we did there are scarce resources for the animals to survive on. Not all zoos have great welfare, as stated in the documentary, however, some are really trying. SO give credit where credit is due. If there is a way to gradually end zoos in their entirety, then yes, we should do that. But for the time being, we need to help give these animals the best life we can.

Who would not rather see a wild animal in its native habitat?!!? The problem is that most of their natural habitat does not exist anymore. Even places where it does, the animals are at risk for poaching &/or they outgrow their habitat. Young males in search of new territory come up against humans with usually deadly results for the animals.
I don't like zoos, but they are far better than they were even 20 years ago. What is the alternative? Being killed and eventually becoming extinct.
Disgusting wasteful suburban sprawl and habitat destruction are still going on, even though we know better. Subdivisions, shopping plazas, WalMarts, office and industrial "parks." Thank goodness, Millennials are opting for living in already existing housing and using public transport. Even China is realizing their recent booming capitalist culture is coming under criticism by the very people that live there. So there is hope.
I just came home from a zoo in Hyderabad, I really really felt the animal's. came here, its heart breaking that they are suffering alot mentally... but zoo is the only place we see animals rite. Sorry animal's, hope for the best 🙂

i know some of you dont agree with all the zoo concept of homeliving for the wildlife. but you must accept that some of the animal are not being able to release to the wild which maybe can harm the animal himself because they had a bad living exprience before. and the worst is not only able to defend himself to hunter but maybe affect to ability to looking for food. i hate when animal use to be just an entertaiment object. but the fact is they need just not only to cureable when they sick but also help them to get their wild instict.

What bothers me is that i think most people understand that if an animal human or otherwise is confined they become nerotic and basically go insane, but for some reason people just decide to over look this for animals in zoos aquariums and confinement for any other animal industry, even with pets at times when people hoard animals or neglect them. We completely overlook how these beings feel, simply for the senseless, selfish pleasures that people have become so accustomed to, the taste, sight, emotion, touch, none of this benefits the animals, none of this treats them as an individual but just an object for you to enjoy. How can a living breathing being be anything but an individual? Look at it through the eyes of the victim, would you like being born to be enterainment,to be sold like a toy, to be someones handbag or scarf, to have the day of your death planned, to be someones science experiment? These beings aren't stupid, they have their own languages and communications, their own cultures and personalities. And just as much as a want to live as us. Sentience matters #govegan.
