    In male:
    You are singing high node and u are able to maintain the texture of your original voice. Then it's head voice.
    If its become very thin or airy as she described in higher node then it is falsetto.

      @@pizzaparkerhotdogmaguire3225 you might've misunderstood my statement. I meant to not force your voice to go for high notes, do notes that are around your range and eventually it will get higher the more you practice it and the less strain you get after every song you sing.

    I took an online course in singing, where they taught that falsetto involves opening the vocal folds so that more air gets out. If you do that with chest voice, you whisper (breathy). So they explained that falsetto is high pitched "whispering" with sound.

    • @buddhistsympathizer1136
      @buddhistsympathizer1136 Рік тому

      To me, that is right. Falsetto does not have proper cord closure and is an airy sound (not recommended).

    • @zeljkaznatizeljka2758
      @zeljkaznatizeljka2758 3 роки тому

      You should work on learning the proper techique and singing properly and as you will be developing it, your real voice will come out.
      You could be signing like her by imitation and that way you could learn wrong. For example, if your throat hurts while singing that is the best indicator you don't sing properly and that way you could damage your vocal chords.
      Or you could have a similar register and voice tone and that's why you feel like that. The best way to know that is by learning how to sign properly and you will then hear your real voice and you will be able to sing forever without strain or pain in the throat. :D

    omg you are... this is... just so incredibly wonderful, perfect explanation. it's so true, so confusing, and it will never make any sense.
    Especially in relation to my voice since i'm a transgender girl (but with a boys voice, thx. teststerone...) but I have trained "falsetto" so much that it's basically my "head voice" kinda... I have the full Alto range in that muscle group (the cricothyroid I believe it is called, compared to the "chest voice" thyroarytenoid)
    I'm also transgender though and my speaking voice still needs plenty of work, but that's a completely different topic about the thin/thick true folds and more xD

    Hi! Could you do a video on how to increase one's vocal range next?

  • @ryptoll4801
    @ryptoll4801 7 місяців тому

    I'm female but have unusually thick vocal chords due to high testosterone, so my voice has both male and female qualities. Very generally: in pitch it's male, in resonance it's female. My range being roughly C2-G4, up to around F3 I do best in chest voice, and then up to around D4 in head voice. My head voice is thinner because I haven't used it regularly for the past 15 years or so, so I kinda forgot how to execute it properly, but otherwise it sounds like my regular voice, just higher and a bit less gritty. However, if I really push it beyond that point, I can take a few extra notes in a really squeaky way, and that's what I think of as my falsetto.
    And like I know that there are men who have that distinct difference between their head voice and obvious falsetto as well. Take for example Freddie Mercury. A lot of his higher notes were clearly head voice, but not that squeaky kind, except when he went really high up. Perhaps especially tenors and men with very wide vocal ranges have that ability. Me and my extra 3 notes that barely pass the middle C isn't much to brag about lol.
    But almost half of my range is clean head voice and I sincerely doubt that would all count as falsetto, just because I'm in the male range with thicker vocal chords. It could also be that some men just aren't very skilled in how to sing strong and cleanly with a head voice. Head voice is a skill that women just generally use far more often. Something to do with head voice generally coming off as more feminine (in speech, that is) I think, plus being more comfortable and practical to use for a higher range. That's just my speculations though.

  • @seanodonnell429

    I have been singing for a few years, and I no longer think of the voice in terms of distinct registers. Instead, I think of it terms of an infinite spectrum of coordinations from the lightest and breathiest falsetto all the way to the heaviest and thickest chest voice and then everything in between.
    Why do I think of it this way? Well, because in a well-trained voice, no two notes in your range are sung with exact same coordination. As you raise or lower your pitch, your vocal folds and vocal tract are making slight adjustments along the way. I am a tenor. My passaggio falls somewhere between G4 and A4. If I were to think of the voice in terms of only the four distinct register, then it would be safe to say the the octave from C3 to C4 falls within my “chest voice” range. However, I know for a fact that I do not sing C4 with the same degree of thickness and the same exact resonant qualities as I do C3. If I did, C4 would sound shouty. In order to sing C4 in a pleasing way, I have to shed some of that weight and change the acoustics of my vocal tract slightly.
    For me, it’s all psychological. If I think of the voice as being divided into distinct registers, I find that limiting and in fact counterproductive. If I think of the voice in terms of a spectrum of coordinations, I am able to listen to my body and take care in developing balanced coordination across my entire range.

    I think you got your head voice and falsetto backwards. I was looking at it on a spectrogram and your head voice had few overtones. Your falsetto had a lot of overtones! I prefer to use science to tell which voice one uses or not. Chest voice has a love of overtones as well. So it makes sense that falsetto would be lacking the amount of overtones.

    I love this! I'm a guy with a pretty deep voice and I've not really used my voice properly ever. Recently I discovered that I have the ability to go to a higher register but trying to figure what sounds natural/stupid/whyshouldIcarewhatpeoplethink/head/thinandreedy I'm finding pretty difficult. Also discovered I have some pretty deep conditioning when it comes to bothering people and being overheard. Stops me singing immediately, stops me being loud enough to understand how I'm singing. Any suggestions? other than saving up and renting a cabin in the wilderness for a week to sing louder.

    (Sorry for grammatical mistakes)

  • @Lone_Paladin
    @Lone_Paladin Місяць тому

    Falsetto is a fake or cheating type of voice. It allows you to sing higher because as my classical voice instructor explained in graduate school, you're pinching the center of your vocal cords together which allows a shorter portion of your vocal cords above and below it to vibrate, producing a double higher pitched sound. So I can sound like a 60 year woman if I want or push my lips together while I do it and make a flute, recorder, harmonica, or violin sound for fun. (I used to mess with my ESL kids and pretend to play music on a pen, and they couldn't figure out how I did it.) And falsetto does have a place even in classical voice, and it's not wrong to use it according to my professors.
    However, ideally, you want to produce an upper register voice, or head voice as people call it, because it has better resonance and just sounds prettier. I'm a baritone, so I top out usually at G4 and bottom out at E2 or E3. But I can do G5 in falsetto, which is why I don't do songs that would require me to use falsetto, because I don't feel like that is my true voice.

      Because sadly many teachers are singers who are trying to explain what they think/do but it’s so open to interpretation there’s no uniform answer until you look at the science.
      Head and falsetto are different but actually you only have one voice. One set of viable vocal folds = one voice. Keep
      It simple and don’t get hung up on labels xx

  • @Scarlet_Monk

    I really don't like the definition of falsetto being a "breathy head voice". You can sing throughout your range in a way that's more or less breathy. You don't give your chest voice a different name when you let more air through so why would you re-name the head voice, some people going as far as calling it a completely different register? I don't buy it lol

    do men have head voice?

    • @BobStrachanMusic
      @BobStrachanMusic Рік тому

      Yes, depending on the school of vocal training there are at least 4 registers (5 if you could vocal fry but you can do vocal fry all the way up) If you put your hand on your chest and say "Hey" in your speaking voice, that's chest...if you put your finger under your nose and say "nnnyay" really whiney, that's pharyngeal register...then if you say "whoooooo" like Rick Flare etc, that's head voice... there is also whistle voice which is waaaay up there above head voice. Falsetto in most vocal circles now is classified where the vocal chords are disconnectet giving a more breathy sound but it depends on the schools or genres.

    Right now I'm working on my head voice with my vocal coach, I can't help but to eventually force or strain notes higher than A#4. Also, no matter how hard I try and practice, I can't lower my volume, smooth my voice and go to the fifth octave without breaking into a whistle voice. What do you suggest I do?

    In short, there is no head voice in men, contrary to the popular belief, even among the opera singers. Then there is no mixed voice either. The upper part of the normal voice is only a shift of resonances in the mouth.

    I'm sorry but there is a CLEAR difference in falsetto and head voice (kopfstimme, voix de tête etc) and falsetto particularly in men. The word itself means false in Italian, so a false voice. It has to do with a different vibration pattern and parts of the vocal folds that vibrate. Yes, falsetto is 'in the head' register, but it's hardly the same as head voice.

    a female explaining -giving examples about falsetto is more confusing because the quality of the voice doesnt change much as compared to a male doing a falsetto. I would say that your bee gees version sounds more like head voice than a falsetto, whereas mickey mouse sounds more falsetto to me.

    My daughter figured out whistle tone instead of learning how to whistle. She got frustrated not being able to whistle so she’d fake it by doing whistle tone. She can still do it because she used it so much.

      Hi Chanduni, Thanks for your question. As I explained in the video falsetto has different definitions but, If you are referring to falsetto as the insisting head voice tone then, yes it could be related to the sound quality when you mix from lower to higher notes. Good resonance, which can often has that insisting tone, promotes good mixing when moving between registers. This is a bit of a complex topic. I did my best to try and explain it in writing. Hope it makes sense :)

      @@singgeek Sorry no. If you can increase the tone in a connected way, it can't be falsetto or head voice, since the latter is a different vibration mode (falsetto = false voice.) Here is exactly where the confusion lies. There is no magic higher voice apart from falsetto, that is, a breathy and low volume voice. I never heard the term falsetto for the upper normal voice, in contrast to the term head voice. It should not be used either, in none context, since that adds to the confusion.

    • @clmasse
      @clmasse Рік тому

      @@peterbernhard7415 There is no way for the falsetto proper. For the higher range of the normal voice, it is simply a shift of the resonance, or placement.

    This is easily the best video I've seen on UA-cam I've seen on this topic. I've been confused for a long time on the difference between head voice and falsetto, and I think this video does a good job at acknowledging people us falsetto to mean different things - hence the confusion.
